Helena will be finishing the Friday August 28th game suspended by smoke on Monday September 7th as part of a double-header. We will resume play in the top of the 6th inning with the Brewers leading 8-2. First pitch will be at 4:05 PM (5:05 Central) as regularly scheduled. There will then be a 30 minute break in between contests and a 9-inning game will follow.

Rattlers shutout Kernels

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Josh Uhen and Zach Cooper combined on a five-hit shutout as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-0 Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

 

The Timber Rattlers (50-85 overall, 27-38 second half) jumped to the lead by plating three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mitch Meyer started the rally by drawing a leadoff walk. Luis Aviles followed with a double and Sthervin Matos drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Blake Allemand drove in Meyer with a sacrifice fly and both runners moved up a base when the cutoff man was missed. Elvis Rubio made it 2-0 with an RBI grounder to get Aviles home. David Denson drove in Matos with a two-out single and the Rattlers were up 3-0.

 

Wisconsin made it 4-0 in the fifth. Aviles tripled to start the inning and Matos drove him in with a single.

 

The Kernels (74-62, 33-33) had chances, but would strand ten runners as they went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

 

The best chance Cedar Rapids had to score came in the sixth inning against Uhen. LaMonte Wade walked with one out, Chris Paul was hit by a pitch, and Brett Doe sent a sharp single to right to load the bases. Uhen kept the Kernels off the board when he struck out of Brian Navarreto and got Austin Diemer to pop out to short to end the inning.

 

Uhen extended his current scoreless streak to 12-2/3 innings with his performance on Thursday night. He struck out four and pitched around four hits, two hit batsmen, and three walks over six innings to put himself in line for his second win of the season.

 

Zach Cooper took over on the mound for the Timber Rattlers to start the top of the seventh inning and allowed one hit, a two-out double in the seventh, over three scoreless innings. Cooper struck out five and earned his third save of the season.

 

The Timber Rattlers host the Kernels on Friday night in Wisconsin's final home game of the season. Angel Ventura (7-6, 3.17) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Sam Gibbons (7-4, 2.88) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 6:35pm.

 

The first 1,000 fans to attend the game will receive a tree sapling from Boldt. The first 500 kids 12 and under into the ballpark will receive a special Webkinz from North Shore Bank. Special Memories Zoo returns for a petting zoo in front of the stadium. Children 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the postgame Fireworks display on this North Shore Bank/Y100 Family Night.

Josh Uhen ended his season on a high note, or at least I would expect this is his last appearance given there are just 3 games left.

 

Zach Cooper hasn't given up a run over his last 9 appearances going all the way back to 7/3 (he had a DL stint in there) and is also closing out the season on the upswing.

 

Elvis Rubio (2-4,2B) and Luis Aviles (2-3,2B,3B) had the multi-hit games and accounted for all of the XBHs for the Rattlers.

BILOXI, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers suffered their worst defeat in MGM Park's short, 39-game history, falling to the Tennessee Smokies on Thursday night, 11-3, in front of a crowd of 3,114. Biloxi pitching issued 10 walks, including five in a Tennessee, seven-run third inning. With four games remaining, the playoff bound Shuckers are mathematically still in the second half hunt, 2 ½ games back, in fourth place in the South Division standings.

 

The 11 runs and eight-run margin of defeat was season-highs at MGM Park as well as the four errors and seven run inning in the third.

 

Biloxi (33-32) grabbed a lead in the second inning with a two-spot. Back-to-back walks to Garrett Cooper (2x3, R, BB) and Tyrone Taylor (0x3, RBI, R, BB) put two on before Nick Ramirez (2x4, 2B) went down on strikes for the first out. A free pass to Parker Berberet (1x3, BB) loaded the bases for Nick Shaw (1x4, 2 RBI), who stroked a two-run single to center to bring in Cooper and Taylor for the 2-0 lead.

 

Cooper would single in his next at-bat in the third to set a new team record for most consecutive hits with six, and is now 13-for-19(.684), hitting in all five games at the Double-A level with Biloxi.

 

The advantage would not last long as Hobbs Johnson (7-8) could not find the strike zone for a second consecutive outing. The third inning began with Albert Almora, Jr. grounding out, but a walk to Dan Vogelbach and a single by Wilson Contreras put two on for the Smokies. Johnson struck out Jeimer Candelario for the second out, but walked the next two batters to force in a run and cut the Shuckers' lead to one while ending the night for the 24-year-old.

 

The lefty labored through 2.2 innings, issuing six walks, surrendering four runs on just two hits while tossing 77 pitches - 35 for strikes.

 

Drew Gagnon took over for Johnson with the bases loaded and two out, walking the first two batters he faced to erase the Shuckers' lead and put them in a one-run deficit. A wild pitch to Bijan Rademacher allowed Anthony Giansanti to score to put Biloxi down by two. Rademacher then drove a two-run double to right to put Biloxi in a four-run hole. Almora skied one in front of home plate, but Berberet could not handle the popup in fair territory, allowing Rademacher to score from second to complete the seven-run inning.

 

Taylor put a run on the board for Biloxi in the third with a RBI fielder's choice, scoring Josh Fellhauer (0x4, R, BB), but Tennessee (35-31) responded in the fourth with a RBI double by Bryant Flete to put the Shuckers back down five.

 

Jed Bradley shut out the Smokies over two innings out of the bullpen, giving up just two hits and striking out three. Martin Viramontes allowed three runs in the ninth on four hits and a walk.

 

Orlando Arcia (0x3) was ejected in the fourth inning after being called out on strikes, and failed to reach base for the first time in 16 games. Manager Carlos Subero was also ejected in the inning. Tennessee's Stephen Bruno was also ejected in the second inning.

 

The Shuckers will look to even the series on Friday night at MGM Park. The Southern League's Most Outstanding Pitcher RHP Jorge Lopez (12-5, 2.29) takes the mound for Biloxi, while Tennessee will counter with RHP Pierce Johnson (6-2, 2.15). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Sparks' Ninth Inning Homer Lifts Daytona

Tortugas Take the Opener Against the Manatees, 6-4

Viera, FL - Taylor Sparks launched a game-winning solo home run in the top of the ninth inning as the Daytona Tortugas (37-25, 74-58 overall) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (26-37, 55-77 overall) 6-4 on Thursday night in front of 1,059 fans at Space Coast Stadium.

 

With the game tied at one in the ninth, Sparks smacked a 423-foot home run over the left field fence off of Trevor Seidenberger (4-2, 3.06 ERA). For Sparks, it was his 13th home run of the year and his third against Brevard County. Later in the inning, Ronald Bueno singled home an insurance run to make it 3-1, Daytona. After Tyler Spurlin came on in relief, Junior Arias blooped a broken-bat RBI single to left field and gave the Tortugas a three-run advantage. Sebastian Elizalde stepped up and drove home a pair with a single to left field to cap the scoring in the frame. Daytona scored five runs on five hits in the ninth inning.

 

Brevard County made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. With Scott Brattvet on the mound, Omar Garcia reached on an infield single. After a walk to Chris McFarland, Clint Coulter lined an RBI single to center field. Taylor Brennan then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. An RBI single by Dustin Houle plated Coulter and brought the tying run to the plate. Brattvet was removed in favor of El'Hajj Muhammad. Muhammad retired the last two batters, including a strike out of Jose Pena to end the ballgame. For Muhammad, he recorded his 16th save of the season.

 

Evan Mitchell (3-2, 3.90 ERA) threw a scoreless inning of relief to earn the victory.

 

Brevard County opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, McFarland blooped a single into right-center field. After a slight bobble by center fielder Junio Arias, McFarland didn't hesitate and moved up to second on the fielding error. With Coulter at the plate, Daytona starting pitch Nick Travieso uncorked a wild pitch. Coulter then smacked an RBI single to right field.

 

Daytona tied the game in the top of the sixth. Brian O'Grady led things off with a double to right-center field. After a grounder to second moved O'Grady to third, Daniel Pigott lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.

 

Johnny Hellweg turned in a great performance in a no-decision. He tossed seven innings and allowed one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out four.

 

Nick Travieso surrendered one unearned run on two hits in six innings.

 

The series continues tomorrow night in Daytona Beach. Brevard County will send RHP Cy Sneed (3-4, 2.78 ERA) to the hill. RHP Jackson Stephens (12-7, 3.08 ERA) will toe the rubber for Daytona. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Final: Billings 8, Helena 7

 

Darn, Helena's elimination number dropped from four to two with this loss -- painful with a 7-4 lead at the 7th inning stretch.

 

Mustangs edge out 8-7 win

Helena Brewers

 

The Helena Brewers (13-19) dropped their series opener 8-7 to the Billings Mustangs (16-17) on Thursday at Dehler Park in front of 2,216.

 

Junior Rincon made just his second start since the 2011 season, giving up four runs in three innings of work. He would pitch well in the first, but then surrender three in a tumultuous second frame. Shane Mardirosian tacked on a double to get the offense started for Billings. He would go 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.

With Billings leading 4-3, the middle three innings would go scoreless on both sides. Brad Kuntz pitched solid relief for the Brewers, tossing three shutout frames and striking out one to keep Helena relevant.

 

Trent Clark picked up his first Pioneer League home run, a solo shot to opposite field off Tanner Rainey. It was the second round-tripper of his professional career and the first extra-base hit he has had in a Helena uniform.

 

Troy Stokes gave the Brewers their second lead of the night in the top of the seventh when he cranked a two-RBI double to left. Stokes is now on a 14-game hitting streak. This streak ties him with Luis Aviles for longest by a Helena player this season.

 

Despite leading 7-4, the Brewer lead would not last more than an inning. Nate Griep (0-2) had some issues on the hill coming down the stretch, giving up four late runs to give Billings the win. He allowed four runs in two innings of work on four hits.

 

The Brewers and Mustangs will face off in the second game of their four-game series Friday at Dehler Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Soon-to-be 23-year-old non-drafted LHP Brad Kuntz has posted rock star numbers both in Maryvale and Helena, and that production and age level could send the Baylor senior draft pick straight to Brevard next spring with a strong camp.

Maybe it's just as well the interwebs have ignored this one in terms of game summaries --

 

From a distance in Omaha:

 

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Brett Eibner drove in five runs and Jose Martinez collected three more hits as the Omaha Storm Chasers used two big innings late to defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 11-1 Thursday night.

 

After both teams scored in the first inning, the Chasers jumped in front when Whit Merrifield reached on an error to score Dusty Coleman in the second. Eibner then drove in Merrifield with a sacrifice fly.

 

After Martinez drove in a run in the fifth, Omaha pulled away with four runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth.

 

Martinez raised his batting average to .386.

 

J.C. Boscan led off the seventh with his first home run of the season, then the Chasers scored two more runs on a Sky Sox error to take an 8-1 lead.

 

Eibner ended the scoring with a three-run homer in the eighth, his 19th home run of the year.

 

Right-hander Andy Ferguson (7-3) struck out six and walked one in five innings to get the win for the Chasers.

Unfortunately RHP Mark Williams was released on August 4th from the Brevard County roster, but his Brewers minor league journey allowed him to meet his now-fiancé in Appleton.

 

Always pretty cool when the baseball journey impacts life's journey -- heck, I remember that Corey Hart met the future Mrs. Hart while playing in High Desert. They went on to have a large family, and not knowing the career path at the time, certainly their lives were impacted in a big financial way as well in future years.
