Cooper quickly makes mark on Shuckers

Milwaukee infield prospect collects first five-hit game in Biloxi history

By Robert Emrich / MiLB.com

Garrett Cooper has quickly made a name for himself at a level which most deem to be the toughest step up in the Minor Leagues.

The Milwaukee infield prospect recorded the first five-hit game in team history as Double-A Biloxi defeated Mississippi, 5-4, on Tuesday.

Cooper, who finished a homer short of the cycle, opened his game with a triple into left field with two outs in the second inning. The 24-year-old singled into left in the fourth, singled into center in the sixth and doubled home a pair of runs in the seventh. Cooper wrapped up his night with a single into center in the ninth.

"I was trying to see pitches up," he said. "I was battling. I think had three hits with two strikes. I was trying to battle and I drove in a few runs with that double in the seventh. Just trying to see pitches up. That was pretty much it."

Cooper set the team record in just his fourth Southern League game.

"It's great coming up here a few days ago and putting your name in the books as the first guy to do that," the Alabama native said. "More than that I'm trying to help the team win. It's nice to have a five-hit night."

Since being promoted to Biloxi from the Florida State League, Cooper has scorched the ball, going 11-for-16 with four RBIs. The 2013 sixth-round pick felt the adjustment thus far was a minor one.

"Up here, they've been trying to attack with first-pitch sliders and first-pitch changeups," he said. "Trying to lay off the pitches I don't normally swing at first pitch and trying to get attack fastballs. It's a little bit different coming up here, but it's nothing I haven't seen before. It's a little bit of a bigger step, but I'm trying to get accustomed to it."

Orlando Arcia, the Brewers' top prospect, went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored while No. 5 prospect Tyrone Taylor smacked three hits and drove in a run.

Brooks Hall improved to 8-8 after giving up a run on three hits while recording one strikeout over two innings for the Shuckers.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels continued their mastery over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers this season with a 7-1 victory at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Wednesday night. The Kernels have won 15 of the 16 meetings between the teams this season.

Cedar Rapids (74-61 overall, 33-32 second half) scored twice on three straight hits in the top of the second inning. TJ White singled and Max Murphy followed with a double that hit on the foul line in right field. Chris Paul singled to left and both runners scored for a 2-0 lead.

The Kernels added to their lead with three runs in the fifth. Alex Real started the inning with a triple. He would score when a pickoff throw from catcher Greg McCall was errant. Later in the inning, Nick Gordon singled with runners on first and second to drive in a run and put runners on the corners. Then, Gordon stole second and the throw went into center that allowed the runner from third to score. Gordon took off for third and would try to score when the ball was bobbled in center, but Gordon would be out at the plate.

Austin Diemer hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning and the Kernels were up 7-0.

Randy Rosario, the Kernels starter, cruised through seven scoreless innings. He allowed five hits, walked three, and struck out eight to put himself in line for his second win of the season.

Wisconsin (49-85, 36-38) broke up the shutout with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Elvis Rubio singled with two outs. David Denson lined a double to left-center and Rubio scored. But, that was it for the Wisconsin offense on the evening.

The Timber Rattlers are 0-10 at home against the Kernels this season.

Game two of the series is Thursday night. Josh Uhen (1-3, 4.94) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Michael Theofanopoulos (5-2, 3.58) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 6:35pm.

The first 1,000 fans to enter the stadium will receive a Kodi Medeiros bobblehead courtesy of Copps/Pick n Save. It is the final 95.9 KISS-FM Thirsty Thursday. That means soda, beer, and Arty's Old Fashioned drinks are available for just $2.

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. The broadcast is also available on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. If you are a subscriber to MiLB.TV, the game is also available on that platform.

Wisconsin Boxscore

There was a ton of not so subtle hint dropping on the television broadcast that manager Matt Erickson will be moving up and not be with Rattlers next year.

David Burkhalter was having trouble locating his FB all night and while I understand getting him his 85 pitches he clearly didn't have it and the hole just kept getting deeper and deeper... I was struggling with development vs winning watching this one. At least Luis Ortega was fairly sharp over his 2 innings.

Mitch Meyer (2-4) had the only multi-hit game for the Rattlers.

Erickson to temporarily join Brewers staff

Tim Froberg, Post-Crescent Media

GRAND CHUTE – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson will be getting a temporary promotion to Miller Park.

Erickson has confirmed that he will join manager Craig Counsell and the Milwaukee Brewers coaching staff for a six-game homestand, starting against St. Louis on Sept. 15.

Following the home series, which concludes Sept. 20 against Cincinnati, Erickson is scheduled to return home briefly before taking part in the Brewers’ fall instructional league program in Arizona.

Erickson, 40, has managed the Timber Rattlers the past five seasons and served two additional seasons as a Rattlers coach. The Appleton native played 11 seasons of minor league baseball and in four games for the Brewers in 2004, collecting his only major league hit off Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux.

“It’s awesome, a great opportunity,” said Erickson. “I know Craig Counsell a little bit. I knew him as a player and now as a member of the Brewers’ coaching staff. I’m excited to see how it all runs behind the scenes.

“It will be good to see the preparation and just the outline they have in Milwaukee and how Craig handles and delegates things. It will be a great experience.”

It’s no secret that Erickson is well regarded in the Brewers’ organization. He especially enjoys the teaching aspect of the game and has either coached or managed several Milwaukee players, including Scooter Gennett, Khris Davis, Wily Peralta, Jimmy Nelson, Jason Rogers, David Goforth and Tyler Thornburg.

“They think very highly of Matt and it’s great for him to get an opportunity like this,” said Rob Zerjav, the Timber Rattlers team president and general manger. “They have September call-ups and I’m guessing there will be guys coming up who he’s already worked with and played a part in their development.”

Erickson, a former prep standout at Appleton West, has said in the past that he loves working in his hometown, but has never ruled out relocating to another area for the right job.

“I’d be shocked if this was Matt’s last time down at Miller Park as a Brewer coach,” Zerjav said.

The Timber Rattlers’ season ends Monday at Burlington.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox and Storm Chasers battled their way through a tight contest in Omaha's 4-3 win before a crowd of 3,611 at Security Service Field on Wednesday night.

Sox starter Josh Roenicke (7-11, 5.72) scattered four runs over six innings of work, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out one along the way. Angel Franco's RBI groundout plated Casey Kotchman in the Omaha second to give the visiting side an early 1-0 lead.

Colorado Springs took a brief lead after scoring three runs in the home third against Storm Chasers southpaw Chris Dwyer (3-2, 3.98). The Sox collected five hits and a walk in the frame with four of those hits going for extra bases. Michael Reed doubled to lead off the inning before back-to-back one-out RBI triples by Kyle Wren and Matt Long gave the home side a 2-1 advantage. Luis Sardinas promptly plated Long with a run-scoring single to cap the frame's scoring with the Sox now leading 3-1.

Omaha wasted little time tying the see-saw contest, scoring two runs on two hits and a walk in the very next frame. Jose Martinez cashed in with an RBI single against Roenicke to cut the deficit to one before Kotchman's run-scoring groundout knotted the game at three after three and a half innings of play. Dwyer would not allow another Sox run, departing after allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings of work.

Roenicke walked Brett Eibner to leadoff the Strom Chasers sixth before serving up an RBI double to Martinez, giving Omaha their first lead since the top of the second with the new 4-3 advantage. The right-hander would depart after six with his team trailing by one.

Joba Chamberlain tossed a perfect sixth for the Storm Chasers, striking out two to maintain the slim lead before turning the ball over to right-hander Louis Coleman in the Sox seventh.

The lefty/righty duo of Jeremy Horst and Jim Henderson combined to toss three scoreless innings in relief of Roenicke to keep the contest close in the latter innings. The Sky Sox offense could not capitalize however as they could not get the big hit when it counted against Coleman. The reliable reliever wound up giving his squad a three-inning save to secure the 4-3 win for Omaha. Coleman's ninth save of the season helped the Storm Chasers improve to 78-61 while dropping Colorado Springs to 60-78 with just 5 games left to play in the 2015 season.

The Sky Sox ultimately outhit Omaha 10-6 as Matt Dominguez, Brandon Macias and Wren recorded mutli-hit games. Unfortunately the home squad could not capitalize with the big hit necessary to take home the win.

Colorado Springs will look to secure a series victory with a win in the final contest of this four-game set against these same Storm Chasers on Thursday night. Sky Sox southpaw Brent Suter (3-0, 3.07) leads the way against Omaha righty Andy Ferguson (6-3, 3.31) with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM MDT (7:35 Central) from Security Service Field.
