Rattlers let one slip away in Clinton

Wisconsin led 7-0, fall 10-9

David Denson went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs, and two RBI for the Timber Rattlers Tuesday night at Clinton. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Clinton LumberKings engaged in a slugfest in their final meeting of the season. The LumberKings came out on top with a 10-9 victory at Ashford University Field as they stormed back from a 7-0 deficit and held off a desperate Wisconsin rally in the ninth inning. Both teams had sixteen hits in the contest.

The Timber Rattlers (49-84 overall, 26-27 second half) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Tucker Neuhaus singled to start the game. Elvis Rubio knocked in Neuhaus with a double. David Denson followed with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Mitch Meyer singled to get Denson home from second.

Meyer started Wisconsin's scoring in the top of the fourth inning with a one-out, solo home run. The homer was the first of the season for Meyer. Natanael Mejia followed with a double. Luis Aviles singled with two outs to send Mejia home. Then, Neuhaus launched a homer to right and the Rattlers were up 7-0.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Cody Ponce got the first out of the bottom of the fourth inning, but things went downhill from there as Clinton scored six times in the frame.

The LumberKings (43-90, 17-47) rally started with a walk to Joe DeCarlo. The next two batters singled to load the bases. Then, Martin Peguero, Brock Hebert, and Austin Cousino each had RBI singles to keep the bases loaded and pull Clinton to within 7-3.

Ponce recorded the second out on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Pat Leyland to make the score 7-4. But, the throw into third missed the cutoff man and the LumberKings had runners at second and third with two outs. Burt Reynolds made Wisconsin pay with a broken bat single to right to drive in both runners to make the score 7-6. Ponce gave up one more hit in the inning before Gian Rizzo took over to get the final out of the fourth.

Clinton tied the game against Rizzo in the fifth. Gianfranco Wawoe, who had three hits in the game, reached on an infield single and Peguero singled on a hit-and-run to put Wawoe on third base. Rizzo got the second out, but Cousino singled to get Wawoe home with the tying run.

Devin Williams took over for Rizzo to start the bottom of the sixth inning and quickly got the first two outs and was ahead of DeCarlo 0-2. But, DeCarlo singled to center and Wawoe drew a walk. Wayne Taylor singled on a 3-2 pitch to score DeCarlo with the go-ahead run. Peguero followed with a double into the left field corner, both runs scored and Clinton was up 10-7.

Wisconsin had a chance in the top of the ninth inning. Blake Allemand and Elvis Rubio singled to start the inning. Denson singled to knock in Allemand and second Rubio to second base. Sthervin Matos was next and his sinking liner to left in front of Wawoe, but Rubio got a bad read and was heading back to second base as the ball dropped in and he was forced at third for the first out of the inning.

Mejia made it 10-9 with a single down the line in left to score Denson and send Matos to third base, but the final batter struck out and the game ended with the Rattlers on the short end of the score.

Allemand extended his current hitting streak to ten games with two hits in four at bats. Allemand has at least one hit in 19 of his last 20 games. Denson was 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, and two RBI.

The Timber Rattlers begin their final home series of the 2015 season on Wednesday night against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. David Burkhalter (5-7, 4.55) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The Kernels have named Randy Rosario (1-5, 3.60) as their starter. Game time at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium is 6:35pm.

Yabba Dabba Do Over! The first Flintstones Night was rained out last Friday, but the Stone Age is coming back with help from The Stoneworx on Wednesday. The first 500 kids 12 and under will receive Bam Bam sticks. Make sure to try the Brontosaurus Burger at the Steak, Rattle, & Grill.

Enjoy Cher-Make hotdogs, Pepsi products, and Miller beer for $1 during the game as part of WIXX Bang for Your Buck Night!

If you are a subscriber to MiLB.TV, the game is also available on that platform.

HOME RUNS:

WIS:

Mitch Meyer (1st, 0 on in 3rd inning off Zack Littell, 1 out)

WP: Jeffeson Medina (5-10)

LP: Devin Williams (3-8)

SAVE: Ronald Dominguez (3)

Wisconsin Boxscore

I work pretty hard to remain emotionally detached and objective but even for me games like this sting badly.

None of the pitchers could hold the line in this one. Cody Ponce who had been wonderful up until today saw his ERA jump almost a full run with the 6 ER he allowed. Devin Williams' appearance means that I won't have a chance to see him pitch on the final home stand and ultimately won't be able to get a first hand velocity report to everyone.

The offense came so close and giving up that Elvis Rubio out in the 9th when he started back towards 2nd thinking Matos' hit to left field would be caught proved incredibly costly. Rubio did go 3-5 with a 2B, an outstanding day at the plate, and actually the only Rattler who went hitless in the game was Omar Cotto... I realize Sthervin Matos didn't technically have a hit but that's because of Rubio's base running blunder. Check out the box for a very busy and fun day for the Rattler hitters.

Final: Biloxi 5, Mississippi 4

SHUCKERS USE FOUR-RUN RALLY IN SEVENTH TO TAKE OUT BRAVES, 5-4

Biloxi takes Magnolia State Rivalry, 12-11, over Mississippi behind Cooper’s historical five-hit night

Chris Harris/Biloxi Shuckers

Garrett Cooper is 11-for-16 in his first four games as a Biloxi Shucker (Elwin WIlliams)

PEARL, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers’ offense woke up late and used a four-run seventh-inning to take out the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday night, 5-4, behind Garrett Cooper’s record-setting five-hit performance at Trustmark Park. The win gives the Shuckers a season victory over the Braves, 12-11, in the final matchup of the regular season between the two clubs, and moves them 2 ½ games back of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for first place in the Southern League South with five games remaining.

Biloxi (33-31) had to play from behind early as Mississippi plated the first run of the game in the first. Mycal Jones doubled to start the bottom of the inning and came around to score two batters later on KD Kang’s RBI groundout to third.

The Shuckers tied things up with a run in the third. Adam Weisenburger (1x5, R) started the frame with a single and advanced to second on Tyler Wagner’s sacrifice bunt. After a ground out to second by Yadiel Rivera (1x4, R, BB) advanced the runner to third, Orlando Arcia (3x5, 2 RBI, R) drove Weisenburger home with an infield single to third.

Arcia’s three-hit day was his 15th of the season and 47th multi-hit game of the year which also extended his on-base streak to 16 games.

Mississippi (35-29) plated two runs in the fourth to take a two-run advantage over the Shuckers. Kevin Ahrens lifted a homerun to left-center to put Biloxi in a one-run deficit. Rio Ruiz flew out to left for the first out, but a walk to Steve Rodriguez and an error on Rivera at second allowed Matt Lipka to reach safely and put two on. A groundout to short by Eric Garcia moved the runners up a base after the second out, leading to Greg Ross’ RBI single for the second run of the inning.

The Shuckers’ deficit grew to three after Ahrens added a RBI single in the fifth off of reliever Brooks Hall (8-8) to drive home Levi Hyams.

Biloxi sent nine men to the plate and struck for four runs to jump on top in the seventh against the Braves’ bullpen. Pinch hitter Nick Shaw (0x0, R, BB) walked to start the inning and Rivera singled to put two on for Arcia, who deposited another RBI single to make it a 4-2 game. Taylor Green (0x1, R, BB) walked to load the bases before Josh Fellhauer (0x5) struck out for the first out. Tyrone Taylor (3x5, RBI) drove in Rivera with a single to left to bring the Shuckers within two. Cooper continued his onslaught of Southern League pitching with a two-run double to left to score Arcia and Green to complete the four-spot.

Cooper’s five-hit performance makes him 11-for-16 (.688 average) in four games since joining the Double-A squad and puts him in Shuckers’ baseball history as the first player to have a five-hit game.

Jacob Barnes took the bottom of the seventh and walked a batter, but struck out two and did not allow any damage. Damien Magnifico worked the final two frames for his 18th save in 20 chances.

The Shuckers will have a day off on Wednesday before returning home to face the Tennessee Smokies for the final five games of the season at MGM Park. LHP Hobbs Johnson (7-7, 3.61) will look to finish the season above .500 for the Shuckers, while RHP Andres Santiago takes the mound for the Smokies. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to http://www.biloxishuckers.com.

It's been pretty apparent all season that the record book is completely closed on the Huntsville Stars, and the Shuckers' record book has its own distinct identity only.

No Montreal Expos - Washington Nationals association here, and that seems proper on the minor league level.

Final: Helena 6, Billings 3

Brewers double up Mustangs for 6-3 win

Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers hit for five doubles Tuesday night as they ended their four-game series against the Billings Mustangs with a 6-3 win.

Three Brewers pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts in the winning effort. Starter Christian Trent went three innings and allowed one earned run on three hits. Reliever Joshua Torres then came on for the next four innings, picking up the win as he too allowed just one run. Quintin Torres-Costa then came on for the final two innings, giving up one earned run and recording five of six outs on strikeouts to pick up the save.

Frank Mallen (is that what we're calling Franly now that he's stateside?) led the way for Helena offensively as he finished the night 3 for 3 at the plate with one of the Brewers' five doubles.

Helena is off Wednesday before its final two series of the regular season. Helena travels to Billings for a four-game series against the Mustanges Thursday to Sunday and then closes out the season with two home games against the Missoula Osprey Monday and Tuesday night.

Helena Box Score

Mallen and his 3-for-3 was actually a mid-game replacement for George Iskenderian, who we recently discussed, and made his first appearance since August 16th.

SS Gilbert Lara was 2-for-4 with a double.

Soon-to-be 23-year-old switch-hitting catcher and 28th round UW-Milwaukee product Mitch Ghelfi is riding a seven-game hit streak with four multiple-hit games, and has a real chance to be Wisconsin's primary catcher in 2016.

Brevard County 5, Lakeland 2

I can't find a story on this game. Wei-Chung Wang went the distance in one of his better outings of the year. Two triples given up led to the two runs. Other than that pretty much domination by Wang.

Brevard County Box Score

Omar Garcia, Chris McFarland, Taylor Brennan, Dustin Houle and Angel Ortega all had 2 hits. Brennan got his 25th double of the season and is now 5 for 9 the last two days.

Brevard County Game Log

After Lakeland tied the game at one in the top of the fifth, the game was essentially decided here:

Brevard County Bottom of the 5th

Steven Halcomb grounds out, shortstop Jared Reaves to first baseman Francisco Martinez.

Angel Ortega singles on a ground ball to shortstop Jared Reaves.

Omar Garcia singles on a line drive to right fielder Ben Verlander. Angel Ortega to 2nd.

Christopher McFarland singles on a line drive to right fielder Ben Verlander. Angel Ortega scores. Omar Garcia to 3rd.

Clint Coulter hit by pitch. Christopher McFarland to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Scott Sitz replaces Endrys Briceno.

Taylor Brennan doubles (25) on a fly ball to left fielder Raph Rhymes. Omar Garcia scores. Christopher McFarland scores. Clint Coulter to 3rd.

Sky Sox Chase Omaha With Four-Run Sixth

Colorado Springs uses one big frame to down Storm Chasers in 4-3 Comeback Win

By Ed Pearsall / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Michael Reed's two-out, two-run double in the sixth gave the Sky Sox a 4-3 lead; a score they would maintain in Tuesday night's win over Omaha. (Paat Kelly photo)

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox and Omaha Storm Chasers waited out a 21-minute pregame rain delay in Colorado Springs' eventual 4-3 win before a Tuesday night crowd of 4,478 at Security Service Field.

With the promotion of trade-deadline acquisition Zach Davies for the first day of September MLB roster expansion, Tim Dillard took the ball in a spot-start for the Sky Sox. The right-hander would allow three first-inning runs on three hits, including a two-run blast by left fielder Rey Fuentes and an RBI knock by catcher and former Brewers farmhand J.C. Boscan. Despite the tough frame, Dillard would strike out two batters before working out of the inning with his team trailing by three before their first at-bat.

The side-slinging veteran settled down, shutting down the Omaha offense the rest of the way. Dillard allowed just the three first-inning runs on six total hits and two walks while striking out three over five solid frames, giving his team a significant chance at a comeback win after a precarious beginning.

Storm Chasers right-hander Casey Coleman would keep the Sox offense off balance through five innings of work before departing in the sixth without recording an out. The Omaha starter allowed three consecutive singles to begin the inning with Matt Clark's RBI base-hit serving as the knock-out blow. Luis Sardinas came around to score the Sox first run on the play to cut their deficit to 3-1 as Colorado Springs now boasted a two on and no out situation in the frame.

Omaha manager Brian Poldberg called upon reliever Michael Mariot (4-2, 2.30) to get his team out of the late jam. The right-hander promptly plunked Nevin Ashley to load the bases before Robinzon Diaz went down on a called third strike for the first out of the pivotal inning. Matt Long plated the second run of the frame in the following at-bat with a sac fly to left before Michael Reed capped the Sox scoring with a two-run single, plating Clark and Ashley to give Colorado Springs their first lead of the night. The book on Coleman would close with Clark's run as the righty was charged with three earned runs on nine hits, walking none and striking out two over five plus frames of work.

Austin Ross (3-1, 6.60) took over on the mound for the start of the Omaha sixth. The right-hander would allow just two base runners on two free passes over two innings of work while striking out three to earn the win for Colorado Springs. Southpaw Mikel Strong tossed a scoreless frame of his own in the seventh the keep Omaha off the board and maintain the Sox slim one-run advantage.

Mariot followed the decisive sixth with two shutout frames in the seventh and eighth respectively to conclude his night. The reliever allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out five in his three-inning appearance.

With regular Sox closer Jaye Chapman having worked extensively over the last few games, right-hander would take the bump for the Storm Chasers' last offensive opportunity in the top of the ninth. The veteran reliever secured his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 inning, helping the Sox to their second straight win over Omaha with the 4-3 Preston Guilmetvictory. Colorado Springs improves to 60-77 with the win while dropping the Storm Chasers to 77-61 with just six games left to play in the 2015 PCL season.

The Sox will look to secure a series victory against the defending back-to-back PCL champions on Wednesday in game three of this four-game set. Josh Roenicke (7-10, 5.70) is slated to make the start for Colorado Springs as he faces off with Storm Chasers southpaw Chris Dwyer (2-2, 3.89) with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM MDT (7:35 Central) from Security Service Field.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Luis Sardinas' followed up a hideous AAA June (.518 OPS) with a nearly-as-hideous AAA July (.537 OPS). In an August sample size larger than those two months combined, Sardinas posted a .331/.365/.415 line, and he began September with a 4-for-4 night, all singles.

First baseman Matt Clark was on base three times, including a double. Third baseman Matt Dominguez, LF Matt Long, and 2B Brandon Macias each had two hits, doubles for Dominguez and Long.

From the Lakeland Ledger:

Flying Tigers fall to Manatees 5-2

Ledger Staff

Published: Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 6:48 a.m.

Last Modified: Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 6:48 a.m.

VIERA — Taylor Brennan's two-run double in the fifth inning was all the support Wei-Chung Wang would need as Brevard County beat Lakeland 5-2 on Tuesday in Florida State League action.

The Flying Tigers (52-78) were just one run behind when the Manatees (55-76) strung together three singles to set the stage for Brennan. Brevard County would go on to score four runs in the inning to break the game open. Wang (10-6) would do the rest, allowing just two runs and striking out six in a complete-game effort.

Jared Reaves led the way for Lakeland, going 2 for 3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Lakeland starter Endrys Briceno (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Flying Tigers have an off day and will return to action at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at home against the Tampa Yankees.

Wang's Gem Helps Manatees Break Streak

By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees

Wei-Chung Wang, seen here, tossed a complete game in Tuesday night's victory. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

Viera, FL - The Brevard County Manatees (26-36, 55-76 overall) benefitted from Wei-Chung Wang's finest performance of the season to earn a 5-2 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (19-42, 52-78 overall) in the series finale Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard County staked Wang with an early lead as they were able to do some damage against Lakeland starting pitcher Endrys Briceno in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor Brennan led off with a single to left and then went to third on a Dustin Houle single to right. Rafael Neda then hit into a double play that would erase both him and Houle but allowed Brennan to score to put the 'Tees in front.

The Flying Tigers would draw level against Wang in the top of the fifth inning, which was ignited by a leadoff triple from Ben Verlander off of the right centerfield wall. He would not have to wait long to come home as Jared Reaves laced a single into left center to tie the game. A pitch in the dirt to Grayson Greiner gave Reaves the incentive to try to take second but a strong throw from Neda behind the plate would cut him down and the inning shortly after that as Wang struck out Greiner and Tyler Hanover.

However, the Manatees would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. Angel Ortega was the catalyst for the rally as he reached on a one-out single and then moved to second on an Omar Garcia base hit in between first and second into right. Chris McFarland then singled in nearly the same spot to drive in Ortega to give the Manatees the lead. Briceno then ended his outing by hitting Clint Coulter with a pitch, which loaded the bases, as he would make way for Scott Sitz. Brennan greeted him with a bloop two-run double for his third and fourth RBI of the series. Houle then lifted a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Coulter to cap the outburst.

Lakeland's last threat against Wang would come in the top of the eighth, which started with a leadoff triple from Reaves down the right field line. After Greiner flew out to shallow left, Hanover singled to right center to score Reaves but would be thrown out by Garcia trying to stretch for a double.

Wang then retired the final four hitters to record his third consecutive complete game, this being the first to go nine innings. He gave up two runs on six hits for the night, striking out six, which tied a season high and walked none on 101 pitches for his 10th win of the season.

Five Manatees recorded multi-hit games to help lead an 11-hit charge. Brennan capped a five-hit series with two more, including his 25th double and brought his RBI total to 53 for the season.

The Manatees have an off day on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday as they begin the final series of the season at home against the Daytona Tortugas. RHP Johnny Hellweg (1-6, 5.54 ERA) will get the start; he'll be opposed by RHP Nick Travieso (6-6, 2.89 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M.

Cooper only has 800 MiLB ab's...I was going to post something here about his lack of power, but honestly, I don't think we've really seen what this guy has. He has hit a lot of doubles, but outside of this year, where half of his total career ab's have come from in a lousy power environment, he's been hurt and getting sporadic playing time. He's barely played anywhere other than BC. I'm very curious to see what he does with a full season in Biloxi next year.

They mentioned in more than one Manatees' broadcast that Garrett was not 100% physically last year so maybe discount 2014 a little bit. Anyway his line now is:

.308/.370/.452/.822

Compare that to other first base prospects:

Josh Bell (Pirates rated #1 on MLB for 1B):

.316/.388/.444/.832 all at Indy AAA I think.

Dominic Smith (spent all season in Florida State League, Mets #3 on MLB prospects):

.305/.354/.417/.771
