PEARL, MS - The inaugural Magnolia State Rivalry will come down to the ultimate rubber match as the Biloxi Shuckers fell to the Mississippi Braves on Monday night, 3-0, to even the season series at 11 wins apiece. The Shuckers were shutout for the 13th time in 2015, but picked up their 55th quality start of the season behind Josh Hader's strong start. The loss gave the Braves' a series victory, taking three of the first four in the set.

 

The M-Braves sit a ½ game behind Pensacola in second place in the South standings, while the Shuckers drop to 3 ½ games out with six to play in the half. The second half winner will face Biloxi in game one and two of the South Division Series, Sept. 10-11 at MGM Park. The Shuckers concluded the month of August by playing 30 games in 31 days and finishing 16-14, matching their win totals in May and June.

 

Hader (1-3) struck out the side in the second and the leadoff batter to start the third, but allowed three runs in that frame to put Biloxi in a three-run hole.

 

Mississippi's rally started with Stephen Janas singling to center and moving up to second after Emerson Landoni was hit by a pitch. Mycal Jones followed with a two-run double to put the Shuckers in a two-run deficit. KD Kang followed with a RBI single to right to bring in Jones and put Biloxi down by three.

 

Hader impressed outside of that three-run third, striking out eight without issuing a walk in seven innings. The southpaw has recorded three quality starts in his last four outings, including back-to-back seven inning outings. The Shuckers' offense has struggled in those starts, scoring just three runs - with three shutouts - during that stretch. In six Biloxi starts, Hader is 1-3, but has a 2.94 ERA with 44 strikeouts and just nine walks (0.95 WHIP). The Millersville, MD native is holding the opposition to a .194 average.

 

Braves' starter Stephen Janas (2-7) did not allow a ball to leave the infield in his six innings, with the lone hit coming on a slow roller to third off the bat of Yadiel Rivera to start the fifth. In his first win since July 19, Janas gave up just the one hit, walked two batters and struck out three for his second Double-A victory.

 

Martin Viramontes made his first appearance since being hit by a line drive on Aug. 28, and worked a perfect eighth on 13 pitches.

 

Orlando Arcia's (0x3, BB) franchise record 14-game hitting streak was snapped after the hitless performance, but the on-base streak stayed alive after drawing a walk in the first. Mississippi's Rio Ruiz had his 15-game hitting streak end as well. The only multi-hit contest came from Rivera, going 2-for-4.

 

Biloxi (32-31) will look to salvage the five-game series and take the inaugural Magnolia State Rivalry series on Tuesday night. RHP Tyler Wagner (11-5, 2.13) takes the start for the Shuckers, while the Braves will have RHP Greg Ross (7-9, 4.10) toeing the rubber. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Final: Wisconsin 5, Clinton 4 (11 Innings)

Man this game looked like it was slipping away but the young Rattlers have been fighting end to end of late and scratched this one out.

 

This was one of Eric Hanhold's better starts of the season, it's been a rocky debut for him.

 

While 1 of Luke Curtis' runs was unearned due to a Jake Gatewood error, that inning was largely a result of his own making with a HBP and WP sandwiching the error. Tyler Linehan was huge in this game and has gone scoreless in 9 of his last 10 appearances yet still sports an ugly 5.52 ERA. Scott Lieser added some intrigue after replacing Linehan but ultimately got the job done.

 

Even though it was an 11 inning game just 2 Rattlers managed multi-hit efforts, in fact at 1 point the Rattlers had 2 runs on just 1 hit. Sthervin Matos (2-4) and Luis Aviles (2-5,2B) were the notable T-Rat hitters though Tucker Neuhaus(0-3,BB) did knock in 2 runs including the game winner with sac flys in the 5th and 11th.

Flying Tigers Defense Saves Game One Triumph

Viera, FL - The Lakeland Flying Tigers (18-41, 51-77 overall) got timely defense to hold on to a 2-1 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (25-35, 54-75 overall) in Game One of a doubleheader Monday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

The Manatees seized the lead right away against Flying Tigers starting pitcher Jonathan Maciel in the bottom of the first. Omar Garcia led off by legging out an infield single and then moved to second when Chris McFarland slapped a base hit into left field. After Clint Coulter struck out, Taylor Brennan flicked a base hit to left to bring in Garcia for his 50th RBI of the season. Dustin Houle then loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch but Jose Pena hit into an around the horn double play to short-circuit the rally.

 

Lakeland responded immediately in the top of the second against Manatees starter Jorge Ortega. Curt Powell led off the inning with a double down the left field line and then came into score on a Ben Verlander single to left. Ortega limited the damage to just that as he would get Jared Reaves to ground into a double play and then struck out Tim Remes.

 

The Flying Tigers would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth against Manatees reliever Stephen Peterson. Powell singled to center with one out to start the rally and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Following a walk to Verlander, Reaves laced a double to the left field corner to score Powell and move Verlander to third. Peterson and Preston Gainey would make sure the margin stayed there as they combined to retire the final 11 Flying Tiger hitters they faced after the double.

 

The 'Tees had two opportunities to potentially tie the game erased by stellar play from the Flying Tiger outfield defense, the first coming in the bottom of the fourth. After Michael Ratterree doubled with one out, Steven Halcomb lifted a would-be single into left center that Raph Rhymes snagged with a scoop catch and then made the easy throw to second base with Ratterree already halfway to home. Then in the bottom of the seventh, with Garcia on first and one out, McFarland ripped a single into center that

Ismael Salgado cut off and then threw to a covering Powell at third who applied the tag on Garcia to preserve the win.

 

Maciel turned in a solid start to earn his fifth win of the season, giving up just the one run on seven hits in six innings of work. Whit Mayberry nailed down his fifth save of the season.

Ziomek Shines for Lakeland in Game Two Victory

Viera, FL - Kevin Ziomek turned in a masterful performance as the Lakeland Flying Tigers (19-41, 52-77 overall) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (25-36, 54-76 overall) 3-1 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Ziomek (9-10, 3.51 ERA) threw 6.1 innings to earn the victory. He surrendered one run on four hits and two walks. Ziomek fanned seven.

 

Lakeland scored a single run in three consecutive frames from the third to the fifth innings. Ben Verlander opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third. Tyler Hanover added an RBI single in the next inning and Ben Verlander made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

 

Brevard County was able to get on the board in the sixth. With two outs, Chris McFarland singled. After Clint Coulter singled to left, Taylor Brennan drilled an RBI single to left field and made it 3-1, Lakeland.

 

The Manatees threatened in the last half of the seventh. With one out, Michael Ratterree drew a walk after falling behind in the count 0-2 that chased Ziomek. Tyler Ford entered from the Lakeland bullpen. Paul Eshleman smoked a line drive down the third base line, but Hanover made a lunging grab for the second out. Angel Ortega then grounded out to third to end the ballgame. Ford recorded his first save of the season.

 

Brandon Woodruff (4-6, 3.49 ERA) took the loss. He surrendered three runs - one earned - on eight hits. He walked one and struck out three.

 

Tristan Archer tossed two shutout innings in relief.

 

The Manatees and Flying Tigers will conclude the series tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (9-6, 3.65 ERA) will get the ball for Brevard County. Lakeland will send RHP Endrys Briceno (1-2, 3.42 ERA) to the hill.

Wisconsin wins in eleven at Clinton

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scratched out a 5-4 win over the Clinton LumberKings Monday night at Ashford University Field. Tucker Neuhaus drove in a pair of big runs and Sthervin Matos preserved the victory with a fine defensive play to end the game.

 

Estarlyn Morales put Clinton (42-90 overall, 16-47 second half) in front in the first inning. Brock Hebert started the LumberKings first with a double and was at third base with two outs. Burt Reynolds drew a walk and Morales followed with an RBI single to right on a 1-2 pitch from Wisconsin starting pitcher Eric Hanhold.

 

Wisconsin (49-83, 26-36) came back to tie the game in the top of the second inning. David Denson walked to start the inning, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. The wild pitch by Clinton starting pitcher Lukas Schiraldi was his 23rd of the season. Matos drove a single to center to send Denson home with the tying run.

 

Hebert started the Clinton third inning with a double to right. He took third on a deep fly to left. Pat Leyland got Hebert home with a grounder to short and Clinton was back in front.

 

Wisconsin tied the game in the fifth inning without a hit off Schiraldi. Greg McCall drew a walk, Matos was hit by a pitch, and Mitch Meyer walked to load the bases. Neuhaus hit a sacrifice fly to right with one out and McCall scored the run to make it 2-2.

 

The Rattlers needed just one hit to score two runs in the top of the sixth against reliever Pat Peterson. Jake Gatewood drew a walk with two outs. McCall followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners. Matos smashed a hard grounder off the glove of Clinton first baseman Kristian Brito for an error and Gatewood scored the go-ahead run.

 

Then, Matos and McCall pulled a double steal for the second run of the inning with McCall scoring after Matos drew the throw by stealing second.

 

The LumberKings came back in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Luke Curtis. Chris Mariscal was hit by a pitch to start the inning. An error with one out denied Wisconsin a chance to get Mariscal at second on a force play and Austin Cousino reached on the play. A wild pitch by Curtis moved the runners into scoring position. Leyland singled to center to drive in the tying runs.

 

The game remained tied until the eleventh inning. Matos singled with one out. Meyer and Luis Aviles followed with singles to load the bases for Neuhaus, who drove in Matos with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Rattlers a 5-4 lead.

 

Scott Lieser, who got the final two outs in the bottom of the tenth, struck out the first two Clinton batters in the bottom of the eleventh. But, Austin Cousino wasn't done. The LumberKings centerfielder tripled to center and the tying run was at third for Gianfranco Wawoe.

 

Wawoe hit a sharp grounder to the hole at short. Gatewood made a good pick, but his throw to first was low. Matos, playing just his seventh game at first base this season, made the scoop and held on for the final out as the throw beat Wawoe.

 

The final game of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at Ashford University Field. Cody Ponce (2-1, 1.21) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Zack Littell (3-6, 3.65) is set to start for the LumberKings. Game time is 6:30pm.

Big First Inning Goes Sox Way In 5-3 Win

 

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Sky Sox and Omaha Storm Chasers battled their way to a 4-3 ballgame after just one inning of play in Colorado Springs’ eventual 5-3 series-opening win before a crowd of 2,179 at Security Service Field on Monday night.

 

The Storm Chasers jumped out to a quick three-run lead in the first frame of the contest against Sox starter Ariel Pena (2-2, 4.14). Omaha would collect a walk and four base knocks in the inning as Brett Eibner and Casey Kotchman combined for three RBIs. The right-hander settled down however, keeping the visiting squad off the board for the rest of his six-inning outing. He allowed six hits and two walks while striking out five in the quality start.

 

Pena would earn the win with the help of a huge pick-up by his offense in the very next frame. The Sox lineup struck back with four runs of their own in the home first on the strength of five straight hits to open the frame and a two-out lead-changing RBI single by Michael Reed. Luis Sardinas and Juan Centeno also collected RBI singles with Matt Clark’s run-scoring double coming in between against Omaha right-hander J.C. Sulbaran (3-2, 5.54), giving Colorado Springs an early 4-3 lead after a combined seven-run first inning. The Storm Chasers starter allowed one more run on a mammoth 463 foot solo blast by Clark in the home fifth. Sulbaran allowed five total runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out one in five innings of work.

 

Former standout reliever and 2009 World Series Champion Joba Chamberlain tossed a scoreless sixth inning to keep the Omaha deficit at two runs after six innings of play.

 

Brandon Kintzler and Preston Guilmet combined for two shutout frames in relief of Pena to preserve the 5-3 lead with Storm Chasers southpaw Troy Patton doing his part for his team with two scoreless relief innings of his own.

 

Colorado Springs called upon closer Jaye Chapman (S, 15) to close out the 5-3 contest in the Omaha ninth. The right-hander did just that, walking one and striking out two in a tidy inning to secure the win for the Sky Sox. With the win, the Sox improve to 59-77 while dropping the Storm Chasers to 77-60 on the season with seven games left to play in 2015.

 

The Sox look to make it two straight against the defending back-to-back PCL champions in game two of this four-game set on Tuesday night. Zach Davies (1-2, 5.00) is set to take the ball for Colorado Springs against left-hander Casey Coleman (5-3, 4.54) and the Storm Chasers with first pitch slated for 6:35 PM MDT (7:35 Central) at Security Service Field.

Brewers streak comes to an end

The Helena Brewers (12-18) had their four-game winning streak snapped on Monday with a 7-6 loss to the Billings Mustangs (15-16) at Kindrick Field. It was Helena's first loss at home in 2 1/2 weeks.

 

Helena grabbed an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Troy Stokes led off with a single and later scored on a double steal. Stokes is now on an 11-game hitting streak which ties him for second longest of the season. He would go 3-for-6 with a double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Stokes is also just one stolen base off the league lead with 24.

 

Jose Cuas added an RBI double to the proceedings, his 18th of the year. Trent Clark and Jonathan Oquendo also contributed RBI singles off Jose Lopez in the first. Lopez would make it through just one inning before being pulled from the start. It was his shortest appearance of the season. He gave up four runs on five hits and struck out one. He would not receive a decision.

 

Billings immediately overcame their 4-0 deficit, scoring four runs of their own in the top of the 2nd off Jake Drossner (4-3). Drossner could not make it through three complete, going 2 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. The loss ended his winning streak at two games.

 

With the bases loaded in the top of the second, Jose Duarte grounded into a fielding error by Cuas, which coupled with a throwing error by catcher Milan Post, allowed three runs to score on the play with the ball not escaping the infield.

 

Billings grabbed the lead for good in the top of the third when they scored two more off Drossner. Dalton Carter collected an RBI single and later scored on the double of Hector Vargas.

 

Malik Collymore and Stokes both put together three-hit performances for the Brewers, but it would not be enough. Helena drops to 4 1/2 games out of first in the division in the second half.

 

The Brewers and Mustangs will conclude their four-game series on Tuesday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).
