Final: Helena 4, Billings 2

7th Straight Home Win for Helena

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (12-17) won their seventh consecutive home game on Sunday with a 4-2 victory over the Billings Mustangs (14-16). The win secured at least a series split in the four-game set against the Mustangs.

Helena wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the first off Jacob Constante (3-3). Troy Stokes led off the game with a single and scored later on the RBI single of Steven Karkenny. Stokes is now on an 11-game hitting streak, the second longest streak of the year for a Helena hitter. He went 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Karkenny scored later in the inning on the RBI single of Gilbert Lara.

Lefty Drake Owenby made the start for Helena. He gave up one run on one hit in his three innings on the hill. He would not receive a decision.

Billings broke through for a run in the second when Jonathan Martijn doubled and scored later when Zach Shields was walked with the bases loaded. The Mustangs collected just four hits in the game and have combined for five hits over their last two contests.

Milan Post added to Helena's lead in the fourth when he smacked an RBI single to score Jose Cuas. Post went 2-for-3 with the run batted in.

Alex Farina (2-2) picked up the win for Helena, throwing three shutout innings of relief. He allowed just two hits and struck out two batters.

Southpaw Brad Kuntz added in his second save of the year, pitching the final three innings of the game. He would retire the final seven batters he saw to end the matinee.

The Brewers and Mustangs will face off in the third game of their four-game series Monday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

NOTE: Missoula defeated Great Falls Sunday -- Missoula is now looking like they will win both halves, so Helena is now only two games back in the loss column for the next best overall record and a playoff spot (click on "Overall Standings").

Helena Box Score

Brewers have found a winning formula in having pitchers work in three-inning intervals.

CF Trent Clark was 0-for-2 but walked twice, which still keeps us all ultra-excited.

This outfield is pretty deep when both (and both red-hot) Malik Collymore and Carlos Belonis can get a day off. Catcher Charles Galiano was the DH here to allow for the full days off.

Helena Game Log

After making a two-day re-appearance on August 15th and 16th, 7th round infielder George Iskenderian has been idle since. Not sure if it's still a leg injury that has him sidelined again.

Late rally pushes Rattlers past Clinton

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Jake Gatewood was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI for the Timber Rattlers in a 6-3 win at Clinton on Sunday afternoon. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica

CLINTON, IA - Jake Gatewood drove in two runs with a two-out double in the top of the eighth inning to give the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers a 4-3 lead over the Clinton LumberKings Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field. Wisconsin would score two more runs in the inning and go on to a 6-3 victory in game one of a three-game series.

The LumberKings (42-89 overall, 16-46 second half) had a good opportunity to score first. Brock Hebert singled and Austin Cousino drew a walk. But, Tucker Neuhaus made a diving stop of a hard grounder off the bat of Gianfranco Wawoe and turned it into a force at second. Kodi Medeiros got out of the frame with a strikeout.

Clinton threatened again in the fourth inning against reliever Angel Ventura. Estarlyn Morales singled and stole second to start the inning. An infield single by Pat Leyland with one out put runners on the corners. Ventura escaped the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to center.

The Timber Rattlers (48-83, 25-36) broke through in the top of the fifth. Gatewood doubled to start the inning. Greg McCall bunted Gatewood over to third. Sthervin Matos knocked in Gatewood with a single to left.

Ventura walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the fifth, but looked like he would get through the inning with no more damage as he retired the next two batters. But, Burt Reynolds was next and he cracked a homer to left-center to put the LumberKings up 2-1.

Blake Allemand got the Timber Rattlers back to even in the top of the sixth. The Wisconsin second baseman, who had singled earlier in the game to extend his hitting streak to eight games, launched a solo homer with one out to tie the game. Allemand, the fifth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 draft, has at least one hit in seventeen of his last eighteen games. He ended the day with three hits.

But, Clinton responded in the bottom of the sixth with a little help from the Rattlers defense. Joe DeCarlo doubled to right as the leadoff batter in the inning. Pat Leyland dropped a bunt up the first base line. First baseman Sthervin Matos fielded the ball and looked at third before turning to throw to first. Both Ventura and Allemand were over to cover first and Ventura dropped the throw. The ball trickled into right field and DeCarlo scored on the play for a 3-2 lead.

LumberKings starting pitcher Eddie Campbell left after seven innings. He allowed two runs on six hits, walked one, struck out six, and was in line for the win.

Then, Wisconsin staged a rally in the eighth against the Clinton bullpen. Tucker Neuhaus drew a walk with one out against Thyago Vieira. Elvis Rubio was hit by a pitch from Vieira with two outs. Then, David Denson drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Clinton went to the bullpen and brought Kodi Kerski out to face Gatewood.

Gatewood drove an 0-1 pitch from Kerski down the line in right for a ground rule double to knock in Neuhaus and Rubio to put the Rattlers up 4-3. McCall smacked the next pitch from Kerski to center for a two-run single and the Rattlers were up 6-3.

Zach Cooper took over on the mound for Ventura to start the bottom of the eighth inning and set down the LumberKings in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to close out Clinton for his second save of the season.

Game two of the series is Monday night at Ashford University Field. Eric Hanhold (0-3, 7.52) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Lukas Schiraldi (4-12, 5.05) is set to start for the LumberKings. Game time is 6:30pm.

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. The broadcast is also available on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

HOME RUNS:

WIS:

Blake Allemand (2nd, 0 on in 6th inning off Eddie Campbell, 1 out)

CLN:

Burt Reynolds (3rd, 1 on in 5th inning off Angel Ventura, 2 out)

WP: Angel Ventura (7-6)

LP: Thyago Vieira (1-4)

SAVE: Zach Cooper (2)

TIME: 2:43

Wisconsin Boxscore

Burt Reynolds... MiLB player names never cease to amaze.

Neither Kodi Medeiros or Angel Ventura were exceedingly sharp, though Medeiros made it through unscathed with the help of excellent defense and Ventura caused his own defensive woes. Zach Cooper had one of his better outings since joining the Rattlers.

Jake Gatewood(2-4,2 2B) hit the ball hard in all 4 ABs with 2 doubles to show for his efforts. Blake Allemand(3-4,HR) continues his late season surge as does Sthervin Matos(2-4) who's hit in 8 of the last 10 games and raised his average 20 points over that span.

Adrian Houser upped his scoreless streak to 15 innings with six shutout innings on Sunday (M.K. Krebs)

PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers withstood a late rally by the Mississippi Braves on Sunday night to take game three of a five-game set at Trustmark Park, 4-3. The victory gives Biloxi an 11-10 advantage over Mississippi in the inaugural Magnolia State Rivalry with two games remaining, and moves the Shuckers within two games of first place of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in the second half. Only seven games remain during the 2015 regular season, including five at MGM Park with the Tennessee Smokies.

Top Brewers prospects Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor combined to go 5-for-9 on Sunday, with Taylor adding a triple and Arcia extending his franchise-best hitting streak to 14 games. Arcia also tallied his league-leading 46th multi-hit performance. Starter Adrian Houser (4-0) won his fourth-straight start and tossed six shutout innings, increasing his scoreless innings streak to 15 innings.

Yhonathan Barrios worked a perfect eighth inning to start his night of relief, but made things interesting in the ninth.

A leadoff single by KD Kang followed by a hit-by-pitch of Barrett Kleinknecht put two runners on for Kevin Ahrens, who struck out for the first out of the ninth, but Levi Hyams singled down the left field line to score to score Kang. Steve Rodriguez followed with a RBI single that put runners on the corners and cut the Shuckers lead to one. Matt Kennelly pinch hit for relief pitcher Bryton Trepagnier and grounded into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play and secure the victory for Biloxi.

Biloxi (32-30) struck quick against Andrew Thurman, plating two runs in the first. Tyrone Taylor (3x5, RBI, R) started the game with a single and moved up on Arcia's (2x4, R, BB) base hit to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, put runners on first and second for Nathan Orf, (0x2, R, 2 BB) who sacrificed both runners 90 feet. Josh Fellhauer (2x4, 2 RBI, BB) drove the runners home with a double down the right field line to give the Shuckers a two-run advantage after the top of the first.

Houser impressed both at the plate and on the mound, starting a two-out rally with the bat in the second by singling to right and scoring on Taylor's triple to center to give the Shuckers a 3-0 lead. Houser collected his first two professional hits going 2-for-3 with a double and run scored.

On the mound, Houser continued to work his way through the Braves' lineup. The Oklahoma native did not allow a hit until Mycal Jones singled to start the fourth, one of three in his six innings of work to go along with a walk and three punchouts. In 11.1 innings against Mississippi this season, the 22-year-old has shutout the Braves on seven hits, one free pass and seven strikeouts.

Biloxi added onto its lead with Garrett Cooper's (2x4, RBI, BB) RBI single in the fifth, plating Orf for a 4-0 advantage. In his first three games with Biloxi, Cooper is batting .545 (6x11) with two RBI.

Manny Barreda allowed a run in the seventh on two hits and a walk, but also struck out two batters.

The Shuckers will look to even up the series in game four on Monday night. LHP Josh Hader (1-2, 2.70) takes the mound for Biloxi, while Mississippi will send out RHP Stephen Janas (1-7, 4.65). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to http://www.biloxishuckers.com.
