One of the more disappointing spring assignments for a player had to have been LHP Stephen Peterson being assigned to Brevard County for a third season, instead of getting to take part in the Biloxi winning road trip fun. It hasn't seemed to faze the ever-positive Peterson...

Peterson’s drive and commitment as strong as ever

The road to the major leagues is a long one, even for the best of prospects, as any minor league baseball player will tell you. The long bus rides and long season can be a grind that some are just not cut out for, if they do not have the commitment and love of the game required to keep pursuing their dream of making their debut in a major league ballpark.

Stephen Peterson knows this very well, now in his fifth season of minor league baseball and his third with the Brevard County Manatees, the High Single A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The talented lefty from Wilmington has clearly proven his ability to get batters out in the Florida State League, having posted a 2.98 ERA last season and a 3.12 mark this season, along with a 17-11 career won-loss record in the minor leagues, but still, he waits for the call to move up the organizational ladder, just like so many others.

Wondering why the Timber Rattlers and Snappers aren't playing two today after Friday's rainout.

Two non-contenders in the Midwest League, but it's unusual to see a game not made up when it could be. Did the two organizations simply agree they're thin, perhaps in pitching availability?

PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers fell behind early and couldn't make up ground for a second-consecutive night against the Mississippi Braves, dropping game two of the five-game set, 8-2, at Trustmark Park. Biloxi has dropped the first two games by a combined score of 15-3, the worst two-game stretch in the young franchise's history. The loss also ties the season-series between the two teams at 10 wins apiece.

Orlando Arcia (1x4, R, 2B) waited until his final at-bat, but hit his league-leading 36th double in the ninth to set a new franchise record with a 13-game hitting streak. The streak passes Nathan Orf's 12-game hit streak from May 25-June 8. Garrett Cooper (3x4, RBI) brought home Arcia, four batters later with his first Double-A, run-scoring hit on a single to left and is now batting .571 (4x7) in two games as a Shucker. The ninth inning outburst only cut the Braves lead to 8-2, which was the final score

Drew Gagnon (1-1) made his first start as a Shucker and carried a 8.1 inning scoreless streak into the outing. The 2011 third-round draft pick walked a batter in the first, but would leave the runner stranded, before surrendering three runs in the second.

Barrett Kleinknecht singled to start the second for Mississippi. A strikeout to Matt Kennelly gave Gagnon an out, but a walk to Levi Hyams and a single to left by Sean Godfrey plated Kleinknecht. The throw from Nathan Orf (2x4) beat the runner home, but Kleinknecht's slide knocked the ball out of the glove of Parker Berberet, sending the ball into the first-base dugout, allowing Hyams to score as well with Godfrey moving up to third on the error. John Gant struck out for the second out of the inning, but Emerson Landoni singled and scored Godfrey to put Biloxi (31-30) in a three-run deficit. The three-run inning ended Gagnon's scoreless streak at 9.2 innings.

The Shuckers got a run back in the fifth on Berberet's (1x4, HR, RBI, R) second homerun of the season and second in his last three games to make it 3-1, but the Braves would get the run back on a RBI single by KD Kang in the bottom-half.

Gagnon, making his first start since July 25 while in Triple-A with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, needed 104 pitches to work through five innings. The California native allowed four runs - three earned - on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Mississippi (34-27) opened the gates in the sixth against reliever Jacob Barnes, plating four runs on four hits, capped by a three-run double by Rio Ruiz to put the Shuckers in a seven-run hole. Ruiz kept one-ahead of Arcia by extending his hit streak to 14 games.

Yhonathan Barrios (IP, 6 pitches) and Damien Magnifico (IP, H, BB, SO) tossed the final two frames and did not allow a run to cross to the plate.

Biloxi will look to avoid dropping the series in game three on Sunday night. RHP Adrian Houser (3-0, 2.17) will try to stay perfect as a Shucker, while the Braves will counter with RHP Andrew Thurman (1-2, 3.68). First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 4:45 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Beloit scores twice in the ninth to beat Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Josh Uhen pitched six scoreless innings for the Timber Rattlers on Saturday night agains the Beloit Snappers. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were two outs from a 1-0 win over the Beloit Snappers Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Snappers would rally with two runs in their final at bat to beat Wisconsin 2-1.

Jake Gatewood put the Timber Rattlers (47-83 overall, 24-26 second half) in front with Wisconsin's first hit of the game. The shortstop hit a leadoff homer to the bullpen in right-center in the fifth inning.

Starting pitcher Josh Uhen tossed six scoreless innings for the Timber Rattlers. He pitched around six hits, including three doubles, with four strikeouts. Uhen did not walk a batter in his longest outing of the season for Wisconsin.

The Snappers (52-78, 26-34) nearly tied the game in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Luis Ortega. James Harris started the inning with a triple. Ortega got the next batter on a shallow fly to left. Gatewood saved a run by making a leaping grab of a liner off the bat of Max Kuhn. Ortega walked Sandber Pimentel before giving way to Gian Rizzo. The inning ended with the Rattlers still up 1-0 when Rizzo got a foul pop for the third out.

Beloit rallied again in the ninth and this time they cashed in on the opportunity. Rizzo walked Justin Higley to start the inning. Higley stole second to get into scoring position. Tim Proudfoot dropped a one out double down the line in right to score Higley with the tying run.

Joe Bennie followed with a single to put runners at the corners with one out. Then, Harris dropped a safety squeeze bunt up the first base line to score Proudfoot with the go-ahead run. The hit was the third of the game for Harris.

Wisconsin's defense fell asleep on the play and didn't cover third or second base after the bunt. This allowed Bennie to take third and Harris to get to second base. Rizzo issued an intentional walk to load the bases and escaped more damage when Kuhn's fly ball to center was caught by Luis Aviles, who threw home to get Bennie at the plate for the third out.

Blake Allemand lead off the Wisconsin ninth inning with a single against Koby Guana, the third Beloit pitcher of the night. Allemand extended his hitting streak to seven games with that hit. A sacrifice bunt by Elvis Rubio moved Allemand to second base with the tying run, but Guana retired the next two batters to close out the Rattlers.

The Timber Rattlers have scored four or less runs in a game 94 times and are 12-28 in one run games this season.

The Timber Rattlers hit the road for a three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings with game one scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field. Kodi Medeiros (4-4, 4.48) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The LumberKings have Eddie Campbell (2-2, 3.05) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 4:00pm.

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 3:40pm. The broadcast is also available on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. If you are a subscriber to MiLB.TV, the game is also available on that platform.

Jake Gatewood (3rd, 0 on in 5th inning off Heath Fillmyer, 0 out)

Sox Rally, Fall In 6-5 Walk-Off Loss

Isotopes Overcome Sox Three-Run Eighth with Two-Run Ninth

By Ed Pearsall / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

The Sky Sox suffered a tough 6-5 walk-off loss at the hands of the Albuquerque Isotopes on Saturday night before a crowd of 14,299 at Isotopes Park.

The Isotopes would get on the board right away against Sox starter Brent Suter with a Wilin Rosario two-out RBI double, scoring Christian Adames with the game's first run. The southpaw would allow four total runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking none and striking out six over five solid frames.

Colorado Springs would strike back immediately against Albuquerque lefty Rudy Owens with a run of their own in the top half of the second. Luis Sardinas would plate Pete Orr with a vindictive two-out double to knot the contest at one early. Owens would be tagged for just one more run on a Matt Dominguez fifth-inning solo blast. The Isotopes starter gave up just five hits and two walks while striking out eight over six strong two-run frames.

Albuquerque retook the lead on Roger Bernadina's run-scoring sac fly to center in the fourth. Tom Murphy crossed the plate on the play to give the home squad a 2-1 advantage after four innings of play before Dominguez's ninth homer of the season once again tied the contest.

The Isotopes tacked two late runs on Suter as the reliable lefty would be let down by a Kyle Wren fielding error that allowed Jeremy Barfield to score in the fifth before serving up a leadoff dinger to Rosario in the home sixth. Brandon Kintzler would relieve Suter after the starter failed to record an out, keeping the contest at 4-2 through six in Albuquerque.

Nelson Gonzalez gave the Isotopes a scoreless seventh before coming back out for the Sky Sox eighth. The right-hander would not fare so well this time around, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk with the first coming around to score on a Nevin Ashley RBI single. The catcher's 60th run driven in cut the Sox deficit to 4-3. Matt Long followed with a sac bunt to put two runners in scoring position with one out and Miguel Castro coming in to relieve Gonzalez. (2-0, 1.32). Michael Reed cashed in on the pitching change, drilling an RBI double to right to score Matt Clark and Ashley with the Sox fourth and fifth runs to give the visitors their first lead of the night. The righty would get the next two outs in order to send the ballgame to the home eighth with the Isotopes now trailing 5-4.

Jim Henderson worked a scoreless seventh for the Sox before turning the ball over to Preston Guilmet (2-2, 3.38) in the eighth. The right-hander kept the Isotopes off the board in the eighth to maintain the newly established 5-4 lead. Castro worked a perfect ninth for Albuquerque, giving his team a chance at a late comeback at home.

The Isotopes would award their reliever, who just an inning and a half prior had blown his fourth save of the season, with the comeback he would hope for. The Albuquerque offense loaded the bases against Guilmet with one out in the frame to bring third baseman Trevor Story to the plate in the critical at-bat. Story plated Angelys Nina and Tim Smalling with the tying and winning runs on a line drive single to Wren in center, sending the Isotopes home with a 6-5 walk-off win over the Sox in a difficult loss. With the win, Albuquerque improves to 59-76 as Colorado Springs falls to 57-77 on the season.

The Sox will look to avenge Saturday night's loss and secure a four-game series-split with a win on the Sunday finale against these same Isotopes. Coming off of a hitless, five-inning performance in his last start, Hiram Burgos (3-3, 3.25) gets the ball as he leads Colorado Springs against Albuquerque and lefty John Lannan (6-9, 5.50) with first pitch slated for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) from Isotopes Park.

Final: Helena 9, Billings 0

Brewers one-hit Mustangs, win 9-0

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (11-17) collected their first shutout of the season, topping the Billings Mustangs (14-15) 9-0 on Saturday at Kindrick Field in Helena.

Conor Harber made the start for Helena, his third start in professional baseball. The former Oregon Duck went three innings, giving up just one hit, a bunt single for Zach Shields in the third inning. It would be the only hit of the night for Billings.

The Brewers opened the game with six runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Arias (2-2) would not make it out of the inning for Billings, being pulled after just recording two outs. Gilbert Lara and Yerison Pena each added two-RBI doubles in the frame.

Steven Karkenny hit his eighth home run of the season in the second inning, a two-run liner that bounced off the top of the left field wall. He leads Helena in round-trippers, jumping one ahead of Jose Cuas.

Milton Gomez (3-2) and Jon Olczak combined to retire the last 14 Mustangs batters that came to the plate. Billings did not have a baserunner after the fifth.

Helena has now won six consecutive games at home and have won seven of their last eight games overall. They are now just three games back of the Billings Mustangs in overall record. Should the Osprey win the second half in the North Division, tiebreaker would fall to overall record between the three remaining teams.

Helena and Billings will face off in the second game of their four-game series Sunday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 1:05 PM (2:05 Central).

Helena Box Score

Amazing to think the H-Crew have worked their way back into the edges of the playoff picture, what was it, 4-17 at one point this half? This was the first of eight straight games vs. Billings.

21st round NC State RHP Jon Olczak now has a 37-to-5 K-to-BB ratio in just 23.2 pro innings (1.10 WHIP).

Malik Collymore lifted his Brewer average to .323 with a 3-for-5 night as the designated hitter; 3B Jose Cuas was on base after all four trips to the plate...
