Timber Rattlers game with Beloit rained out

Friday's game between the Timber Rattlers and Snappers was rained out at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

 

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Thursday's game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Beloit Snappers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium has been rained out. The game will not be rescheduled. This marks just the second home rainout of the season for the Timber Rattlers.

 

The teams will conclude their series with a single game on Saturday night. Josh Uhen (1-3, 5.66) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Beloit will counter with Heath Fillmyer (2-13, 5.20). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.

 

Fans with a ticket to Thursday's game may redeem it as a voucher for any of the remaining Timber Rattlers home games this season or for a home game in April or May of 2016 based on availability.

 

The first 1,000 fans to enter the ballpark on Saturday will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers pitcher Angel Ventura from Dunkin Donuts. This is poster #9 in a series of ten in the 2015 season. Stick around after the game for a great FOX 11 Fireworks display.

PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers dropped the opener of a pivotal five-game series against the Mississippi Braves, 7-1, on Friday night at Trustmark Park. The loss drops the Shuckers 3 ½ games behind the first-place Pensacola Blue Wahoos and drops their elimination number down to six at the end of play on Friday night. Biloxi pitching matched a season-high by issuing 12 walks in the game, including seven in 2.2 innings from starter Hobbs Johnson (7-7).

 

The Magnolia State rivalry series tightened up after the loss, as Biloxi leads the season-series, 10-9.

 

Mississippi (33-27) grabbed a quick lead off of Johnson in the first, using a sacrifice fly by Kevin Ahrens to right that scored Emerson Landoni for the 1-0 lead.

 

Biloxi (31-29) tied the game at one in the third. Orlando Arcia (2x4, R) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a one-out single, tying the franchise record set by Nathan Orf (0x3, RBI) from May 25 to June 7. An errant pickoff throw allowed Arcia to scamper all the way to third, allowing Orf to lift a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home the runner.

 

Arcia would triple in the eighth, giving him his 50th extra-base hit of the season and league-leading 45th multi-hit performance.

 

The tie would not last long as the Braves would take advantage of five walks in the bottom of the third to send in three runs. The big blow of the inning came off the bat of Rio Ruiz, who lifted a three-run homerun over the right-centerfield wall to put the Shuckers in a three-run deficit. Ruiz extended his hitting streak to 13 games, which is the longest actively in the Southern League.

 

Johnson (7-7) set a season-high for walks in a game by a Shuckers' starter with seven. In 2.2 innings, the southpaw allowed four runs on just two hits and did not record a strikeout for the first time this season. The North Carolina native needed 73 pitches to get through his shortest outing since lasting just 2.1 innings against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on April 11.

 

Jed Bradley came on to relieve Johnson with the bases loaded and two outs in the third and got a groundout to second by Steve Rodriguez. In 2.1 innings of relief, the 2011 first-round pick surrendered two runs on two hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

 

Martin Viramontes' name was called next out of the 'pen to start the sixth. The former USC Trojan gave up a hit in his first inning of work. After having the first two reach to start the seventh, Viramontes took a line drive off of his left leg from Ryne Harper and was forced to leave the game with the bases loaded.

 

Manny Barreda took over from that point and got Emerson Landoni to bounce into a double play, scoring Sean Godfrey from third to put the Shuckers in a 7-1 hole. In two innings, the 26-year-old gave up two hits, walked a batter and struck out two.

 

Garrett Cooper (1x3, BB) picked up his first Double-A hit with a lead-off single to right in the seventh.

 

The Shuckers will look to even up the five-game series with a win on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. It has yet to be determined who will make the start for Biloxi, but Mississippi will send out RHP John Gant (3-0, 1.61). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Pullin's Bat, Glove Wins Game One for Threshers

Viera, FL - Seven innings worth of baseball were ultimately decided by the smallest of margins as the Clearwater Threshers (37-23, 74-56 overall) squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (25-33, 54-73 overall) in Game One of a doubleheader Friday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Brevard County would take the lead in the bottom half of the second inning, which started with a base hit to center off of Threshers starting pitcher Ricardo Pinto. Following fly ball outs from Dustin Houle and Rafael Neda, Michael Ratterree lifted a two-strike pitch over the head of left fielder Andrew Pullin allowing Brennan, who was running on contact, to score from first. The 'Tees very nearly added a second run when Ratterree tried to score on a Steven Halcomb infield single but a perfect throw from first baseman Rhys Hoskins to the plate gave Willians Astudillo enough time to apply the tag and keep the Manatee lead at one.

 

The Threshers would swing the pendulum in their favor for good in the top of the fifth inning against Manatees starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg. The inning was catalyzed on a leadoff bunt single by Malquin Canelo, who then moved to second on a Derek Campbell ground out. Jesmuel Valentin then drew a walk and when Carlos Tocci singled to right, the bases would be loaded for Pullin. He would lace a double to left center to bring home Canelo and Valentin to put Clearwater in front. Hellweg (1-6, 5.54 ERA) would avoid further damage by inducing a grounder back to the mound from Hoskins for a force out at the plate and a flyout from Astudillo.

 

Brevard County had their chances in each of the last two innings against the Thresher bullpen. In the bottom of the sixth, a pair of infield singles from Angel Ortega and Omar Garcia and an intentional walk to Clint Coulter from Jesen Dygestile-Therrien would load the bases for Taylor Brennan. He grounded into an around the horn double play to leave the Manatees empty handed.

 

In the 'Tees last chance in the bottom of the seventh, Houle led off with a base hit up the middle against closer Miguel Nunez and would be lifted for pinch-runner Jose Pena.

 

Pena would then move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Neda. After Ratteree struck out, Halcomb lifted what appeared to be the game-tying hit but Pullin laid out to make a diving catch to end it.

 

Pullin's two RBI gave him 72 for the season and the deciding double was his 18th of the campaign. Aaron Brown registered the lone multi-hit game for the Threshers, as well as his eighth stolen base of the season.

 

Pinto (8-2, 2.45 ERA) was solid in five innings of work to his eighth win of the season. He gave up just the one run on four hits and walked one.

 

Hellweg gave up two runs on seven hits in a season-high six innings. Garcia recorded the only multi-hit game for the 'Tees and also swiped his 52nd stolen base of the season.

Threshers Take Game Two, Sweep Doubleheader

Viera, FL - The Clearwater Threshers (38-23, 75-56 overall) scored four runs in the third inning en route to a 7-0 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (25-34, 54-74) in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium.

 

With the game scoreless, Jesmuel Valentin lined a single to center with one out. Carlos Tocci then hit a sharp ground ball to short stop. Steven Halcomb had the ball go between his legs and trickle into left-center field. Valentin went to third on the Halcomb error. Andrew Pullin opened the scoring with an RBI single to left field. Rhys Hoskins lined a single to center to load the bases. After an Aaron Brown sacrifice fly made it 2-0, Chace Numata laced an RBI single to left field. Malquin Canelo capped the four-run third with a soft liner to right field that scored Hoskins.

 

Valentin added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Brown launched a two-run home run in the seventh to complete to scoring.

 

David Whitehead (8-11, 4.55 ERA) tossed five shutout innings to earn the win. He surrendered just five hits and two walks. He fanned three.

 

Cy Sneed (3-4, 2.78 ERA) took the loss. He allowed four runs, none of which were earned, on nine hits over four innings.

 

The Manatees and Threshers will conclude the series tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. RHP Javi Salas (8-8, 4.21 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Manatees. Clearwater will send RHP Mark Leiter, Jr. (6-1, 2.04 ERA) to the bump.

Brewers, Osprey smoked out

The Helena Brewers were on their way to seventh win in eight games on Friday, until the region's wildfires halted their game after the fifth inning.

 

Helena picked up three runs in the first and another two in the second in jumping out to a quick, 5-0 lead. The visitors got two of those back in the third, but the Brewers tacked on three more in the fifth before the smoke became too much.

 

That left it an 8-2 Brewers lead after five complete innings when officials suspended play.

Heavy smoke in the Helena area forced the suspension of the game after five innings

HELENA, MONT. - Heavy smoke in the Helena area forced a suspension of a game between the Missoula Osprey (38-26) and the Helena Brewers (26-37) after five innings on Friday night. The game, which will be continued on September 7 prior to the regularly-scheduled game, currently has the Brewers leading 8-2.

 

Before the suspension, Trent Clark had accumulated a 4-for-4 night with three RBI for Helena. Clark put the Brewers on the board in the first inning, driving in a pair with a two-RBI single before Gilbert Lara plated the third run of the inning with a single of his own.

 

Leading 3-0, Helena tacked on two more runs in the second, as a single down the left field line from Steven Karkenny and another RBI-single from Clark made it 5-0 Helena.

 

Missoula answered right back in the top of the third inning, scoring its only two runs of the suspended game to cut the deficit to three at 5-2. Isan Diaz blasted what would be his 12th homer of the year before Austin Byler tripled and came in on an RBI-single from Francis Christy.

 

Diaz is 2-for-3 in the game, while Christy has gone 2-for-2 with a triple.

 

With the game teetering on suspension, Helena plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Yerison Pena led off with a single and came around to score on a two-RBI double from Karkenny. The final run came home on a squeeze bunt from Jose Cuas.

 

The two-RBI double was Karkenny's third hit in four trips to the plate, as he currently sports three runs scored and two doubles with three RBI.

 

Following a brief meeting with both coaches, the umpiring crew of Stu Bertrand and Mike Rains suspended play.

Matt Dominguez smacked a two-run homer in the eighth inning and an RBI double in the ninth as Colorado Springs scored eight late runs to take an 8-2 victory over the host Isotopes.

 

 

Albuquerque grabbed a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning when Roger Bernadina hit an RBI ground-rule double and later scored on Trevor Story’s single. Isotopes starter Eddie Butler worked 6 1/3 shutout innings and chipped in a pair of hits. But the Sky Sox ambushed relievers Tommy Kahnle and Brooks Brown for eight runs in the final two innings to take the series-tying win.

NEED TO KNOW: The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (57-76) rallied with a four-run eighth inning Friday night at Isotopes Park to beat the Albuquerque Isotopes (58-76) 8-2. Outfielder Roger Bernadina was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored on the evening.

 

THE TURNING POINT: Both starting pitchers turned in a gem Friday night. Colorado Springs starter Josh Roenicke allowed just three hits in five shutout innings, while the Isotopes Eddie Butler scattered four hits in 6.1 scoreless innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth when Albuquerque finally broke through after a leadoff single from Trevor Story. He advanced to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on Roger Bernadina's ground-rule double down the left field line. Bernadina later scored on Tommy Murphy's single to center, giving the Topes a 2-0 lead through six. After escaping a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning, Albuquerque's luck ran out as Colorado Springs plated four in the eighth to steal a victory from the Isotopes. The Sky Sox added four more runs in the top of the ninth for good measure.

 

DOUBLE THE FUN: The Isotopes infield managed to turn four double plays in Friday night's game. All four twin killings were of different varieties. The Topes turned a 5-4-3 double play in the second, a 4-6-3 in the fourth, a 6-4-3 in the fifth and a 3-6-1 in the sixth. Albuquerque now has 118 doubles plays turned on the season, which ranks fourth-best in the Pacific Coast League.

 

ON DECK: The Isotopes and Sky Sox will play game three of their four-game series Saturday night at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central). Left-handed pitcher Rudy Owens (1-5, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to start for Albuquerque, while Colorado Springs is slated to go with fellow left-hander Brent Suter (3-0, 2.59 ERA) on the mound.

Jed Bradley came on to relieve Johnson with the bases loaded and two outs in the third and got a groundout to second by Steve Rodriguez. In 2.1 innings of relief, the 2011 first-round pick surrendered two runs on two hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

 

I'm going to predict a "crap for crap" change of scenery trade for Bradley this offseason. I'm sure someone will see his talent and try to "fix" him. I was pretty excited when we drafted him, but ooofta... he just can't put it together.
