Wisconsin knocks Snappers out of playoff chase

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Beloit Snappers 4-2 on Thursday night in the conclusion of a suspended game. The win eliminated the Snappers from the second half playoff race in the Western Division of the Midwest League.

 

The game started in Beloit on July 13 with the Timber Rattlers scoring the first two runs of the game only to see the Snappers tying the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before rain halted the game.

 

Wisconsin (45-82 overall, 22-35 second half) took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Elvis Rubio started the inning with a walk after falling behind 0-2 in the count. Greg McCall singled to right on a 1-2 pitch and the Rattlers had runners at the corners. Tucker Neuhaus cashed in Rubio from third with a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 advantage.

 

McCall drew a walk with two outs in the top of the eighth inning and stole second. Sthervin Matos followed with a sharp single to right and McCall beat the throw home for a 4-2 lead.

 

Devin Williams tossed 3-2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Rattlers. He struck out five, including the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth. But, Williams hit Iolana Akau and gave up a hit to Jose Brizuela and the Snappers (51-77, 25-33) had the tying runs on base.

 

Luke Curtis came on to get the final out of the eighth on a grounder back to the mound.

 

Curtis retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth, but gave up a single to James Harris and a walk to pinch-hitter Joe Bennie. Tim Proudfoot stepped in and cracked a drive deep to left, but Mitch Meyer hauled it in shy of the wall and the Timber Rattlers held on for the victory.

 

Williams was credited with the win, his third. Curtis earned his seventh save of the season.

 

The Peoria Chiefs cheered the result as they clinched a playoff spot in the second half due to the loss by the Snappers.

 

Game two will start shortly at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Wisconsin Completion of Suspended Game Box

Well I lost a post last night which thankfully MH covered this morning where I talked about David Denson so I'll cover it again here. As tentative as he looked in his first game back which I was at in person, he's flipped that script in the 3 games since going into night cap and has become aggressive which was actually what I was looking for to start the season. I've tried to explain how he's not overmatched talent wise for 2 years, I honestly believe his issues are all his head. He's hitting now like he did last year in May before breaking his hand. Hopefully he can keep this momentum going through the end of the season.

 

This was possibly Devin Williams' last home appearance of the season which would tick me off since I've been trying to get him on the gun for over a month and I didn't get back up to the Fox valley from Milwaukee for work until he was off the mound in Game 1. I do apologize, but BA will have a good scouting report up on him over the winter if I'm not able to get to a game when he's on the mound, it's hard to guess when he's going to pitch in relief now.

BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers hit the ground running and never looked back in Thursday’s, 8-1, rubber match victory over the Mobile BayBears in front of a crowd of 2,244 at MGM Park. Orlando Arcia led the way with his 44th multi-hit game, scoring three times and going 2-for-3 with a triple in the series finale. The contest marked the season finale between the two clubs, with Biloxi taking 13 of the 27 contests.

 

It didn’t take long for Biloxi to attack Mobile starter Gabriel Arias (4-2). A one-out walk to Orlando Arcia (2x3, 2 RBI, 3 R, 3B) put a man on for Nathan Orf (2x5, 3 RBI, R, 2 2B), who doubled to center, scoring Arcia for the 1-0 lead. Tyrone Taylor (2x5, RBI, R, 2B) added his own RBI double to plate Orf two batters later, and Victor Roache (2x4, RBI) singled home Taylor for the third run of the inning.

 

Arcia’s multi-hit performance produced his 44th of the season and extended both his on-base and hitting streaks to a season-high 11 games. He ties teammate, Nathan Orf for the longest hitting streak of the season.

 

The three-spot would be ample run support for starting pitcher Tyler Wagner (11-5), who dominated the BayBears lineup on Thursday night. Over five shutout innings, the Las Vegas native allowed four hits, but struck out six without issuing a walk on 67 pitches. The 2012 fourth-round pick has stretched his scoreless-inning streak to 19.1 innings, dating back to Aug. 10 against the Mississippi Braves.

 

Biloxi (31-28) added insurance in the second with a two-run frame. A one-out free pass to Yadiel Rivera (0x3, 2 R, BB) set up Arcia’s run-scoring triple to right to bring the Shuckers’ lead to four. Josh Fellhauer’s (1x4, RBI, BB, SB) two-out bunt single brought home Arcia for the five-run advantage.

 

Brooks Hall was the first out of the Shuckers’ bullpen and allowed a homerun to Evan Marzilli to start his appearance in the sixth. A single by Sean Jamieson and a single by Socrates Brito put two on with nobody out and already one across for Mobile (31-27). Hall would regroup and set down the next three BayBears without allowing a run on a groundout, pop out and strikeout to escape the jam with limited damage.

 

Biloxi padded on three more runs in the eighth to open up a cushion for the bullpen with the big knock coming off a two-run double by Orf to score Rivera and Arcia to open the game to 8-1.

 

Jacob Barnes took the eighth and gave up a leadoff single to Marzilli, but induced a pop out and two strikeouts to get out of the inning. Martin Viramontes worked a perfect ninth to secure the victory. The former USC Trojan pitched two innings and struck out four over the five-game series with Mobile, while not allowing any hits or surrendering a walk.

 

Biloxi travels north to face the Mississippi Braves in Pearl, Miss. for a five-game series. LHP Hobbs Johnson (7-6, 3.38) toes the rubber in game one for the Shuckers, while the M-Braves will send out RHP Lucas Sims (3-2, 4.19). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Wisconsin takes two from Snappers

RAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers made it two wins over the Beloit Snappers on Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap. A trio of Wisconsin relievers held the Snappers to three hits and Tucker Neuhaus knocked in the go-ahead run for the second time on Thursday.

 

Beloit (51-78 overall, 25-34 overall) got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning against Scott Lieser, who was making his first professional start. James Harris drew a leadoff walk and went from first to third on a hit-and-run single to right by Max Kuhn. Jose Brizuela put the Snappers in front with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Harris.

 

The Timber Rattlers (47-82, 24-35) tied the game in the bottom of the second. Sthervin Matos singled and stole second with one out. Natanael Mejia drove in Matos with a single to right-center and the game was tied 1-1.

 

Wisconsin took the lead in the fourth inning. Greg McCall started the inning with a double, but he was at third base with two outs. Luis Aviles drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to keep the inning alive. Neuhaus, who earlier in the evening drove in the go-ahead run of Wisconsin's 4-2 victory in the completion of a suspended game, stepped up and dropped a single into right-center to score McCall for a 2-1 advantage.

 

Tyler Linehan, who took over for Lieser in the top of the fourth inning, tossed two scoreless innings to maintain the lead.

 

Zach Cooper came out of the Wisconsin bullpen in the top of the sixth and set the Snappers down in order, but the seventh was a different story.

 

Brizuela coaxed a walk out of Cooper to start Beloit's last time at the plate. Justin Higley drew a walk with one out to put two runners on base. Tim Proudfoot hit a flyball to the gap in right-center to move Brizuela to third with the tying run. Cooper wrapped up the win - and his first save with the Rattlers - when he struck out Shawn Duinkerk.

 

The Rattlers and Snappers continue their series on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Josh Uhen (1-3, 5.66) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Beloit will counter with Heath Fillmyer (2-13, 5.20). Game time is 7:05pm.

A litany of "sweep" puns ran through my mind but I couldn't settle on one, so you get nothing! The downside here is Chris mentioned Carlos Leal is done for the season which I kind of figured, but stinks all the same.

 

I nice bullpen start here limiting Beloit to 3 hits, though it did get interesting there at the end.

 

Even though it was a 7 inning game every Rattler had a hit except for Jake Gatewood who Mehring complimented on his improved defense since returning. Tucker Neuhaus had the only multi-hit game going 2-3 out of the lead-off spot.

Arcia, Wagner put in stellar nights as Shuckers claim series over Mobile

BILOXI – With the Southern League playoffs set to start Sept. 10, the Biloxi Shuckers are looking more and more like the team that cruised to a first-half South Division championship.

 

Tyler Wagner threw five scoreless innings to get the win and Orlando Arcia had an almost perfect night at the plate as the Shuckers beat the Mobile BayBears, 8-1, Thursday night before a crowd of 2,244 at MGM Park.

 

The Shuckers (31-28) claimed the five-game series, 3-2, and moved within two games of first-place Pensacola (33-26).

 

The Shuckers are headed in the right direction with just two more five-game series remaining in the regular season.

 

“August was a tough one. July was tough too,” Shuckers third baseman Nathan Orf said. “The weather is starting to cool off. It's fun to come out with this group every day. We're capable of putting up big offensive numbers. I like where we're at. It's time to start playing some exciting ball the next couple of weeks.”

 

Biloxi starts a five-game series against the Mississippi Braves in Pearl at 7 p.m. on Saturday before returning home to close out the regular season with a five-game stand against the Tennessee Smokies.

 

One reason the Shuckers are beginning to resemble the team that rolled through the Southern League early in the year is that Arcia is starting to pick it up at the plate with an 11-game hitting streak.

 

Arcia, who is batting .304, went 2-for-3 Thursday with three runs scored, two RBIs, a triple and two bases on balls.

 

“I think the Arcia we saw in this series is the Arcia we saw in April all the way up to mid-May,” Biloxi manager Carlos Subero. “Arcia is patient at the pate. He had great at-bats. He was under control the whole game, basically every time he went up to the plate. It's nice to see him finishing like that.”

 

The Shuckers touched up one of the BayBears' better pitchers Thursday night with right-hander Gabriel Arias (4-2) giving up five earned runs on eight hits in five innings.

 

Arias, who spent a good chunk of the season at Triple-A, entered the game with a 4-1 mark and a 1.69 ERA for the BayBears this season.

 

“Up until now, we haven't been able to hit him,” Subero said. “He's a soft throwing righty. He's got good command on both sides of the plate. The guys did a good job early with key hits there. After that, it was good to see our pitching hold up with the defense.”

 

Biloxi scored three runs in the first inning on RBI doubles by Orf and Tyrone Taylor and an RBI single by Victor Roache.

 

In the second inning, Arcia had an RBI triple and Josh Fellhauer laid down a perfect two-out bunt down the third base line to bring Arcia home from third.

 

In the eighth inning, Arcia knocked in another run and Orf plated the final two runs on a double to right field.

 

Every Biloxi batter, except Wagner, reached base in an 11-hit effort.

 

Orf finished 2-for-5 with three runs batted in. Taylor, Roache and Adam Weisenburger all had a pair of hits as well.

 

In a five-inning outing, Wagner gave up no runs on four hits while striking out six and walking none.

 

Wagner improved to 11-4 to move into a three-way tie for the second most wins in the Southern League, only trailing teammate Jorge Lopez (12-5).

 

“The plan was to let him go five innings and it was five scoreless,” Subero said. “He got in trouble one inning, but was able to get out of it.”

Brewers win fifth straight at home

It's late in the season, but the Helena Brewers may be hitting their stride.

 

The club turned in another win on Thursday, this time a 7-3 decision over visiting Missoula. It was the fifth consecutive home win for the Brewers (10-17 second half, 26-37 overall) and sixth win over their last seven games. The team's poor second-half start put it in a deep hole, but the recent streak has pulled Helena to within five games of the North Division-leading Osprey (15-12, 38-26).

 

Helena outhit the visitors 12 to 7, but started out trailing by two after the first inning. The deficit didn't last long, with the Brewers picking up four runs in the bottom of the second and another two in the third to take control.

 

Brewers newcomer Trent Clark -- the 15th overall pick in this year's MLB Draft -- got off to a solid start. A transfer from Arizona along with shortstop Gilbert Lara, the center fielder went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a walk. Lara was 1 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

 

Catcher Mitch Ghelfi (2 for 4) and second baseman Jonathan Oquendo (2 for 4) also fared well at the plate.

 

Starter Joshua Torres (4-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. Southpaw relievers Christian Trent and Quintin Torres-Costa each pitched two scoreless frames.

 

The two teams will play again in a 7:05 PM game Friday (8:05 Central) at Kindrick Legion Field.

HELENA -- Eleven games separate them in the overall standings, but there hasn't been much difference between the first-place Missoula Osprey and last-place Helena Brewers in head-to-head competition this season.

 

Helena evened the season series at 6-6 Thursday with a comfortable win at Kindrick Legion Field, 7-3, in front of 1,869 fans. Osprey ace Bo Takahashi (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in the first four innings.

 

The Brewers kept their hopes alive in the Pioneer League North Division second-half race, moving within five games of the Osprey (15-12 second half, 38-26 overall). Missoula's second-half lead was whittled to one game by second-place Billings, which won in Great Falls, 8-2.

 

Helena (10-17, 26-37) beat Missoula for the second straight night by out-hitting the Osprey, 12-7. Shortstop Isan Diaz was one bright spot for the O's, going 2 for 3 with his 11th home run of the season.

 

Just like Wednesday in Missoula, the Brewers benefited from solid pitching Thursday. Starter Joshua Torres (4-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. Relievers Christian Trent and Quintin Torres-Costa each pitched two scoreless frames.

Missoula gained the upper hand early with two runs on three hits in the first inning. Diaz slammed a one-out home run. Then after Luke Lowery lined a single, Austin Byler delivered an RBI triple to make the score 2-0.

 

Takahashi ran into a heap of trouble in the second inning as Helena reeled off five straight hits in taking a 4-2 lead. Trent Clark and Gilbert Lara, who just joined the Brewers, started the rally with a single and double, respectively.

 

A base hit by Mitch Ghelfi gave the hosts runners on first and third and Jonathan Oquendo cashed in with a run-scoring single. No. 9 hitter Carlos Belonis then notched a single to load the bases and with two outs Malik Collymore ripped a two-RBI base hit to give Helena a two-run lead.

 

The Brewers tacked on another two runs in the third inning, stretching their lead to 6-2. Oquendo had an RBI single and Ghelfi scored on a Belonis fielder's choice.

 

The Osprey cut into their deficit in the fourth. Marcus Wilson ripped a leadoff double and scored on a Matt McPhearson bunt.

 

Takahashi ran into more trouble in the bottom of the inning. Collymore singled and Jose Cuas later came through with an RBI triple to make the score 7-3.

 

Scott Schultz came on in relief of Takahashi in the fifth and stopped the bleeding. He allowed just one hit in two innings before making way for Andrew Potter after the sixth.

 

Missoula wasted a Francis Christy two-out double off Trent in the seventh frame. Torres-Costa came on to pitch in the eighth and the O's failed to capitalize on a one-out single by Diaz.

 

Torres-Costa struck out the side in the ninth. In total, the Osprey struck out nine times Thursday.
