Family Connections in 2007 draft

Recommended Posts

There's not a ton of family connections in this year's draft, here are the ones I can think of...

Josh Vitters brother Christian is in the A's organization.

Beau Mills' dad is the bench coach for the Red Sox.

Todd Frazier's brother Jeff is in the Mariners system.

Justin Jackson's dad Chuck had a cup of coffee or two back in the late 80s, early 90s.

Daniel Schlereth's dad is Mark Schlereth, former all-pro NFL OG and current ESPN analyst.

Cale Iorg, son of Garth Iorg, could get drafted despite being out of the country on a mission. Garth, the former Blue Jay 3B, is presently a minor league infield instructor. Is it with the Brewers?

Per the current Ask BA, Howie Long's son Kyle is a 6-7, 280 pound 1b / LHP who's committed to Florida State on a baseball scholarship.

From a pro standpoint, the physical comparisons as a pitcher would be Jeff Juden and Andrew Sisco, and as a position player they'd be Calvin Pickering and Big Walter Young. There have been precious few major leaguers with his kind of build. Long's high school competition isn't the strongest, and he may be so big that his size works against him. But it's possible some team might really love his arm or his power and could pop him in the fifth round or so next year.

After seeing Howie Long and his kids in an airport, I have to say that they are quite possibly the leanest big people I've ever seen. Howie looked like he wears about a size 46 shorts, yet he didn't look like he had an ounce of fat on him. His kids looked the same. Just very well built

Howie's son will attend Perfect Game's national showcase over fathers day weekend in Cincinnati.

He is a 2008 grad.

Since no one else has mentioned his name, is it safe to assume that Casey Weathers bears no familial link to former Brewer David?

(I suppose it's probably not that uncommon, but I can't think of too many people with that surname.)
