Final: Mobile 4, Biloxi 3

Hader tosses a season-high seven innings, but Shuckers fall late, 4-3, to BayBears

Tyrone Taylor blasted a first inning three run home run on Wednesday night

Biloxi Shuckers

Tyrone Taylor homered in the first inning on Wednesday night, his first long ball since June 10 (M.K. Krebs)

BILOXI, MS – In true Biloxi Shuckers vs. Mobile BayBears fashion, Wednesday night’s contest went down to the final innings in front of a crowd of 2,079 at MGM Park. Unfortunately for the hometown fans, the Shuckers fell, 4-3, in the 13th one-run game out of the 26 meetings between the clubs in 2015.

The loss drops the Shuckers to 2.5 games back in the Southern League South Division standings, with 11 games remaining in the regular season.

Mobile (31-26) grabbed the first run of the game after a one-out double by Sean Jamieson in the top of the first inning. Two wild pitches to Jack Reinheimer by Josh Hader allowed the runner to score and put the Shuckers down, 1-0.

Biloxi’s (30-28) deficit would not last long as the Shuckers struck for three in the home-half of the first.

Yadiel Rivera (0x3, R, BB) walked to start the first and Orlando Arcia (2x4, R, 2B) singled the runner up to second and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Tyrone Taylor (2x3, HR, 3 RBI, R, 2B) came up two outs later and launched a three-run homer to left-centerfield to give the Shuckers a 3-1 advantage.

The homer for Taylor were his first since hitting long balls in back-to-back games on June 9-10, vs. Mobile at MGM Park. Taylor had a double later in the game and the two extra-base hits matched his August total, during the first 21 games this month.

Hader kept the lead going into the fourth, but a solo homerun for Jamieson cut the Biloxi lead to one. Another solo shot for Mobile in the sixth, off the bat of Reinheimer knotted the game at three.

The 21-year-old southpaw turned in his longest outing since June 9, 2014 with seven innings. The Maryland native allowed three runs on six hits, one walk and six strikeouts, tallying four of those six in his final two frames. The outing was the starting rotations 10th over the last 15 games and 53rd on the season, which is more than the overall win totals of Jacksonville and Jackson.

Braden Shipley (9-9) took over for starter Zack Godley and allowed just two hits over six innings for Mobile, while striking out seven on just 72 pitches.

Yhonathan Barrios (1-2) allowed two base runners in the eighth, but left the runners stranded. The righty got the leadoff man in the ninth on a groundout, but gave up a single to Gabriel Guerrero. With Ronnie Freeman at the plate, Guerrero stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Parker Berberet. Freeman went down looking, setting the table for pinch hitter Tom Belza, who doubled to center to plate the go-ahead run.

Josh Fellhauer (1x4) singled to lead off the ninth against Daniel Gibson (SV, 1) and made it to second on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor. Nick Ramirez (1x4, 2B) would strike out swinging and Victor Roache (0x4) flew out to right to end the game.

Nathan Orf’s (0x4) 14-game on-base streak was snapped with a hitless performance.

The Shuckers will look to take the rubber match from the BayBears on Thursday night at MGM Park before heading up to Pearl, Miss. RHP Tyler Wagner (10-5, 2.21) will toe the rubber for Biloxi, while the BayBears will send out RHP Gabriel Arias (4-1, 1.69). First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to http://www.biloxishuckers.com.

Tucker Neuhaus and Ariel Pena with one big collective, "I'm not dead yet!!"

Pena's last two starts - 11.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 18 K. In fact, he's only given up 2 ER in his last five starts. Maybe he gets a chance this September to see what he can do.

If you thought the Brewers were frustrating tonight, the Sky Sox had 10 hits and 3 walks and scored one run on a solo HR.

Cool to see Franly Mallen in Helena.

Looks like "rest the prospects night" in Arizona.

Denson building some nice small-sample data for the "coming out helps your power" thesis.

Is it my imagination, or has Belonis gone slightly berserk since his birthday?

Hiram Burgos and Ariel Pena are looking awfully useful.

Houser pitches best start of career

Dekota Gregory, Pryor Creek (OK) Times Sports Correspondent

Former Locust Grove pitcher Adrian Houser made a statement Tuesday night: fear the beard.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ No. 28 prospect tossed seven shutout innings to earn the win in Class Double-A Biloxi Shuckers’ 9-0 romping over the Mobile Bay Bears.

Houser only gave up two hits and a pair of walks, and never allowed a runner past first base in the best outing of his career. The right-hander also struck out three batters to raise his season strikeout total to 104.

“It felt pretty nice,” Houser said. “Especially not having my best stuff tonight. I just made some pitches and let my defense work behind me tonight. They were great tonight.”

The win maintained Houser’s perfect 3-0 record with the Shuckers since joining the team in late July after being traded from the Houston Astros. Since the trade, Houser has been one of the hottest prospects in the Brewers’ organization. The former second round draft pick has posted a 2.17 ERA in five starts with the Shuckers, and hasn’t given up more than two runs in an outing since Aug. 3, which was his first appearance with Biloxi.

“I think it’s just that I’m getting outs early in counts,” Houser said. “And that just comes from me getting ahead early in counts. But, I wouldn’t have my good outings without the guys behind me helping me out.”

Houser’s performances have also helped jolt the Shuckers in the second half division title race. Biloxi now sits just two games back of the division leading Mississippi Braves with six games left in the regular season. The Shuckers will close out the season with a four-game series at Mississippi.

Biloxi has also already secured a spot in the playoffs after claiming the south division first half title before the all-star break. Houser will look to keep his groove going into the playoffs.

“I’ve just been taking it easy and making sure I’m relaxed out there on the mound,” Houser said. “And the beard is just getting ready for the playoffs.”

Final: El Paso 2, Colorado Springs 1

Chihuahuas Edge Past Sox Late In 2-1 Loss

The Sky Sox dropped their series-finale with the El Paso Chihuahuas in a close 2-1 loss before a crowd of 6,404 at Southwest University Park on Wednesday night.

Sox starter Ariel Pena was strong once again, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight over six very impressive innings of work. The lone mistake on the right-hander’s night came on a one-out pitch to Hector Gomez in the Chihuahuas first as the shortstop deposited his second home run of the season in the left-centerfield seats to give El Paso an early 1-0 lead.

The Colorado Springs offense would strike back against El Paso lefty Robbie Erlin in the very next frame on the strength of a Nevin Ashley solo blast. The catcher’s eighth long ball of the season tied the ballgame at one; a score that would remain until the home eighth. Erlin allowed just the one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over six strong frames.

Austin Ross (2-1, 7.07) took over for Pena in the seventh, tossing a scoreless frame before coming back out for the eighth in the 1-1 contest. The right-hander recorded just one out in the fateful frame, allowing two base hits with Gomez driving in the game-winner on a one-out RBI double to center. Gomez’s second run driven in gave El Paso a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. Jeremy Horst came on to get the final two outs of the frame to send the Sox to the top of the ninth trailing by one.

Right-handers Dale Thayer (1-0, 0.00) and Jon Edwards (S, 21) would toss a combined three scoreless innings to close out the Sky Sox offense and secure the slim one-run victory. The win helps El Paso avoid the four-game sweep while improving their record to 70-61. The Sox drop to 56-75 despite outhitting the Chihuahuas 10-6.

The Sky Sox pack their things and head to Albuquerque for the first of a four-game set with the Isotopes. Zach Davies (1-1, 5.14) leads the way against left-hander Aaron Laffey (3-3, 4.34) with first pitch set for 6:35 PM MDT (7:35 Central) from Isotopes Park.

El Paso Chihuahuas outpitch Sky Sox in series finale

Center fielder Liriano guns down base runner at home plate for last out to preserve victory

By Bill Knight / El Paso Times

Luis Sardinas laced a single up the middle. Brandon Macias rounded third, running full steam. Chihuahua center fielder Rymer Liriano charged the ball and a game was on the line ... a win, a much-needed win, was on the line.

Liriano scooped the ball on the run and gunned a throw home, a rifle shot from possibly the best arm in the Pacific Coast League. One hop and boom. Catcher Rocky Gale took the throw, expertly cut off the plate from Macias and made the tag.

Game saved.

El Paso took a dramatic 2-1 win over Colorado Springs Wednesday night, snapping a three-game losing streak in front of 6,404 fans at Southwest University Park.

"Heck of a baseball game," said El Paso manager Jamie Quirk. "You don't see many 2-1 games in this league. Rymer has got the best arm in the league. He was voted that. And he showed it tonight. What impressed me is that he was under control. Sometimes guys get out of control when they try to make that throw. He didn't. He was right on the money and Rocky did a great job blocking the plate."

Liriano said, "Everybody was charging hard with the ground ball and the runner on second base. Sure, if they get a hit, you want it to come to you. Stay positive. I just knew I've got to throw hard, I've got to get an out. That was a good win for El Paso."

The win was indeed big, moving the Chihuahuas to 70-61 on the season and keeping them 2 1/2 games behind Las Vegas in the Pacific Southern Division.

The Chihuahuas have struggled at the plate throughout this four-game series with Colorado Springs — and Wednesday night was no exception. But they got just the hits they needed to go with a trio of fine mound performances, a pair of double plays, a fielding gem by first baseman Cody Decker and, of course, that big rifle shot of a throw from Liriano at the end.

Starter Robbie Erlin worked six innings, giving up just one run. Dale Thayer came on and worked a scoreless seventh and eighth. Jon Edwards notched the save in the ninth ... thanks to some help from Liriano.

"It all starts with pitching," Quirk said. "And all three of those guys did a good job. The offense was good ... or should I say (Hector) Gomez was good."

Gomez, the Chihuahua's slick fielding shortstop, crushed a home run over the blue wall in the first frame. And then he came through with the clutch base hit in the eighth.

Hunter Renfroe, getting a night off, opened the Chihuahuas' eighth with a pinch-hit single to center. Casey McElroy dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt, moving Renfroe to second. Gomez then ripped a double to left center, one-hopping it off the wall and easily plating Renfroe with what proved to be the game winning run.

"You win by executing," Quirk said. "Great at-bat for Renfroe. He looked at a nice slider, stayed on it, thinking just get on, don't go for a home run. McElroy put the bunt down. And Gomez just really played well."

Pausing, shaking his head, Quirk said, "That win was huge ... huge. We had to stop the bleeding. They (the Sky Sox, who are now 56-75) came in and played a great four days."

The Chihuahuas took infield and had the outfielders throwing from the outfield Wednesday afternoon, something teams do not always do this late in the season.

"I wanted to show them there are other ways to win than just hitting," Quirk said.

And, watching Liriano gun down Macias on that final walk-off play of the game, Quirk knew he had just the right idea.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Thanks to our faithful commentators earlier in this thread, you won't be surprised to see this:

Team RISP: 1-for-7.

Team LOB: 10.

Lots of production at the top of the order wasted...

The new GM will have multiple 40-man decisions to make, and even among the potential minor league free agents (list), RHP Yhonathan Barrios seems a lock, and RHP Ariel Pena joins RHP Hiram Burgos in the "do we let them walk?" category.

Final: Helena 7, Missoula 2

Solid pitching prevails for Helena

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (9-17) split their two-game series with the Missoula Osprey (15-11) with a 7-2 win on Wednesday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.

The Brewers took the first lead of the game when Troy Stokes was walked with the bases loaded by Anfernee Benitez (3-4) to score Jose Cuas. Stokes is now on a seven-game hitting streak, his longest of the season. He went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.

Benitez was roughed up by the Brewers for the second time this season. He would give up four runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

In a 1-1 tie, the Brewers posted three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Carlos Belonis led off with a triple to center and Malik Collymore and Franly Mallen contributed RBI singles. Mallen, making his Pioneer League debut, went 1-for-4 with a strikeout.

Marcos Diplan threw one-hit baseball in four innings in the start for Helena, but would not qualify for a decision. He gave up just one run and struck out five.

Cuas provided two late insurance runs for the Brewers, doubling to score Steven Karkenny and Yerison Pena in the eighth to extend the Brewers' lead to five.

Lefty Jake Drossner came on and held the hosts to one run in three-plus innings before fellow southpaw Brad Kuntz finished up with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless work. Kuntz picked up his first professional save, striking out four.

The Brewers now head home to begin six games at home. First pitch between the Brewers and Osprey on Thursday from Kindrick Field is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Brewers cage Osprey, 7-2

Bill Speltz, the Missoulian

Saddled by a trio of stubborn pitchers, the Missoula Osprey struggled to cut loose Wednesday.

Clutch hits proved elusive in a 7-2 loss to the last-place Helena Brewers in front of 1,754 fans at Ogren-Allegiance Park. It marked Missoula's most lop-sided setback against a Pioneer League North Division foe in three-plus weeks.

The Osprey (15-11 second half, 38-25 overall) saw their division lead dwindle to two games over second-place Billings. The Mustangs won at Great Falls, 3-2.

Missoula stranded eight baserunners and was out-hit by Helena, 14-6. Starter Anfernee Benitez (3-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks in five innings.

Marcos Diplan pitched four strong innings to start the game for Helena, allowing just one run on one hit with five strikeouts. Lefty Jake Drossner came on and held the hosts to one run in three-plus innings before Brad Kuntz finished up with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless work.

Jason Morozowski and Kal Simmons each doubled and finished with a pair of hits to highlight the Osprey attack. Shortstop Jose Cuas had a big night for the Brewers (9-17, 25-37), going 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs.

Benitez ran into control problems as the Brewers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first frame.

Cuas led off with a single to left and moved up when Milan Post was hit by a pitch with one out. Cuas reached third on a bunt single by Carlos Belonis and scored when Troy Stokes drew a bases-loaded walk.

Morozowski notched the first hit against Diplan in the third inning, a double down the first base line. He moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch.

Helena stung the Osprey for three runs with its two-out rally in the fourth. Belonis tripled and scored on a Franly Mallen infield single up the middle. Malik Collymore later connected for an RBI single and the Osprey compounded their troubles when center fielder Marcus Wilson made an errant throw home, allowing another run to score.

Missoula managed just one hit off Diplan in four innings. Simmons greeted Drossner with a one-out single in the fifth, but the Osprey failed to capitalize.

Missoula again failed to capitalize on a scoring opportunity in the sixth. Luke Lowery and Austin Byler collected back-to-back singles and moved up on a pitch in the dirt as Wilson fanned for the second out. Matt Railey stepped to the plate and hit a sharp liner to third base that was handled by Jonathan Oquendo.

The Brewers added an insurance run in the seventh off Osprey reliever Matt Lees. He surrendered consecutive singles to start the inning and Yerison Pena's high-bouncer down the third base line went for a base hit, scoring Stokes.

The Osprey are 6-5 in games against Brewers this season.

Helena Box Score

Nice to see Marcos Diplan's work -- yes, and the lefty relievers here; two throwing errors by debuting second baseman Franly Mallen - in 26 games at second base in the DSL, he committed three errors (11 in 27 games at SS).

Final: AZL Dodgers 10, AZL Brewers 6

Maryvale Box Score

Dodgers led 9-0 after three innings, then held on.

RHP's David Lucroy (4.1 IP, 2 ER) and Gentry Fortuno (2 IP, 0 R) stabilized things late. We need to ask Baseball America staff to identify any stateside 17-year-old's who have posted better numbers than Fortuno.

But RHP Jack Finnegan had his first rough outing in four appearances since being signed as a non-drafted free agent.

CF Trent Clark and SS Gilbert Lara were given the evening off.

SS Gregory Munoz (2-for-3, BB, SF, CS) and Juan Ortiz (playing LF in this game, 2-for-4 with a walk) had good offensive games.

Wisconsin tops Burlington 6-2 to win series

Burkhalter Ks eight; Denson & Neuhaus homer

David Burkhalter allowed one run on one hit and struck out eight over five innings for the win on Wednesday night against Burlington. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Burlington Bees 6-2 Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. David Burkhalter struck out eight over five innings while David Denson and Tucker Neuhaus homered for the Timber Rattlers.

Denson gave Wisconsin (45-82 overall, 22-35 second half) the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Elvis Rubio reached on a two-out single. Denson cracked the next pitch into the Burlington bullpen in left-center for a two-run homer.

Greg McCall singled in the bottom of the second inning and Sthervin Matos chased McCall home with a triple for a 3-0 lead.

Denson had a hand in Wisconsin's fourth run of the night. He doubled off the wall in left to start the third inning. Jake Gatewood flew out to right to send Denson to third base. McCall was next and his sacrifice fly to right knocked in Denson.

The first hit off Burkhalter came in the top of the fourth inning. David Fletcher, the sixth round pick of the Angels in the 2015 draft, lined a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left for his first professional homer. That would be the only hit Burlington (55-72, 20-38) would get against Burkhalter in the game.

The Timber Rattlers scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Luis Aviles bunted for a hit with one out. Neuhaus followed with a line drive to left. The ball stopped at the wall in left. Trevor Gretzky threw up his hands but went back after the ball and dug it out just before the umpires made a call. Neuhaus kept running and would beat the throw to the plate for an inside-the-park home run and a 6-1 lead.

Burkhalter worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning to finish his night. He didn't walk a batter and his eight strikeouts set a new single-game high as a professional for him. Burkhalter would pick up his fifth game of the season.

Cody Ponce took over for Burkhalter in the top of the sixth inning. He struck out four over four innings and allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning as he closed out the Bees for his third save of the season.

Wednesday's victory gave the Rattlers a series victory over Burlington as they took two out of three games. The Timber Rattlers have won two straight series and five of their last seven games.

The Timber Rattlers begins a series with the Beloit Snappers on Thursday night with the conclusion of a game that was suspended at Beloit on July 13. The game was tied 2-2 after four innings when the game was halted by rain. That game will be restarted at 5:35 PM on Thursday night with the Timber Rattlers batting in the top of the fifth. There will be a seven-inning game played thirty minutes after the conclusion the suspended game. Jon Perrin (1-5, 4.31) is the scheduled starter for Wisconsin in the second game. Joey Wagman (8-2, 3.67) is set to start game two for the Snappers.

If you have a ticket for Thursday, it is good for both games. The parking lot opens at 3:00 PM and the gates to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

The first 1,000 fans to enter the stadium on Thursday will receive a mini-bat from The Stoneworx. A 95.9 KISS-FM Thirsty Thursday means 16oz soda, beer, and Arty's Old Fashioned drinks are available for just $2.
