Rattlers rally past Bees

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Luis Aviles drove in three runs with two key hits to help the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeat the Burlington Bees 6-3 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

 

Wisconsin (44-82 overall, 21-35 second half) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to go in front. David Denson drew a walk. Sthervin Matos followed with a single to right and Denson was going from first to third on the hit and Matos took a wide turn around first as the throw appeared headed to third. But, the throw was cutoff and Matos was trapped off first. However, the throw to get Matos was wild. This allowed Denson to score and Matos to take third. Mitch Meyer made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.

 

Burlington (55-71, 20-37) scored their first run of the game in the third inning. Trever Allen tripled to start the inning. Brandon Gildea drove in Allen with a sacrifice fly.

 

The Bees took the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. Tim Arakawa and Taylor Ward singled to start the inning. Wisconsin misplayed a force play at second on a grounder off the bat of Zach Houchins and Arakawa scored on the play. Later in the inning, the Bees had runners at the corners with one out and Timber Rattlers starting pitcher Eric Hanhold appeared to pick the runner off first base. However, Hanhold was called for a balk to allow the runner from third to score the go-ahead run for a 3-2 lead.

 

Wisconsin responded in the bottom of the fourth. Denson and Matos singled with one out. A force play at second left runners at the corners with two outs. Aviles came through by ripping a double into the corner in left to drive in both runners and put the Rattlers up 4-3.

 

Luis Ortega and Gian Rizzo came out of the bullpen in relief of Hanhold and each tossed two scoreless innings to maintain the advantage.

 

The Timber Rattlers added to their lead in the sixth inning. Jake Gatewood walked and Denson doubled to put runners on second and third. Matos knocked in Gatewood with a sacrifice fly for a 5-3 score.

 

The final run of the game came in the eighth. Matos doubled with one out and Aviles drove him in with a two-out single.

 

Luke Curtis tossed a scoreless top of the ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.

 

Matos went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a pair of runs. Denson was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.

 

Both teams have won a game in the series so far.

 

The series between the Timber Rattlers and Bees concludes on Wednesday night. David Burkhalter (4-7, 4.71) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Keynan Middleton (5-9, 4.76) is set to start for Burlington. Game time is 7:05pm.

Lakeland takes rain-shortened series finale from Manatees

The three-game series between the Brevard County Manatees and Lakeland Flying Tigers wrapped up Thursday night with Lakeland winning another low scoring game, 2-1. The game was delayed in the seventh inning due to rain and did not resume.

 

The tight, close nature of the ballgame was no surprise. Game one of the series was won by Lakeland 1-0 and the Manatees answered on Monday, with a 2-1 victory. Pitching has been the story all series long and Tuesday was no exception. Wei-Chung Wang went six innings for the Manatees and Lakeland’s Kevin Ziomek matched that effort.

 

Wang (9-6) blinked first, giving up a run in the second inning. After getting the first two outs, Wang gave up a single to Ben Verlander. Jared Reaves hit one to shortstop that Angel Ortega couldn’t field, putting runners at first and second. Grayson Greiner then smacked an RBI single to left, giving the Flying Tigers a 1-0 lead.

 

The score remained that way until the fourth inning when Omar Garcia started things with a single. As has been the case so many times this season, Garcia took matters into his own hands from there. After Chris McFarland flied out, Garcia stole second and then took third moments later. For Garcia, those were stolen bases number 50 and 51 on the season.

 

Clint Coulter, who had a birds-eye view of Garcia’s stolen bases from home plate, hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Garcia home with the tying run. Taylor Brennan followed with a double and then he followed in Garcia’s tracks, stealing third. He was stranded there when Dustin Houle grounded to first.

 

That missed opportunity would prove costly, because the Flying Tigers scored the decisive tally in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Tyler Hanover singled. Ismael Salgado hit into a force play at second, taking Hanover off the bases, but Salgado reached safely. Raph Rhymes was next up and he rifled a double to center, plating Salgado and giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

 

The Manatees got one more at-bat in the sixth and McFarland hit a two-out double, but with rain falling in the top of the seventh, the umpiring crew decided to call it.

 

Wang took the loss for the Manatees, giving up six hits in his six innings of work. He allowed one earned run and struck out three, while walking none. He definitely deserved a better fate, but was outdueled by Ziomek, who allowed only three hits, while striking out five.

 

After a league-wide off-day on Wednesday, the Manatees will return home to start a six-game homestand against Clearwater on Thursday. The starting pitchers have not been named, but first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

A bunt single by Omar Garcia followed by his 2 stolen bases and a sacrifice fly by Clint Coulter was the only run for the Manatees. Taylor Brennan and Chris McFarland both doubled for the other 2 hits by the Manatees. Garcia had 50 stolen bases as a goal at the start of the season so he has now achieved that goal.

Shuckers take series advantage with 9-0, two-hit shutout of BayBears

BILOXI, MS - Adrian Houser didn't need much run support on Tuesday night against the Mobile BayBears, but the Biloxi Shuckers put on a hit parade anyway, shutting out Mobile, 9-0, in front of a crowd of 2,118 at MGM Park. The nine-run outburst was the most runs Biloxi had put up in a game since scoring 10 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on July 26, while the pitching locked down its 14th shutout of the season.

 

The Shuckers take a 2-1 series advantage, while Houser and two Biloxi relievers held Mobile to just two hits and four total baserunners, not allowing a BayBear to reach second base. In the win, Biloxi went 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

 

Biloxi (30-27) jumped out to an early lead with a two-out rally in the first against Johnny Shuttlesworth (0-1). Nathan Orf (1x2, 2 R, 3 BB) drew a walk after Yadiel Rivera (2x5, RBI, 2 R) and Orlando Arcia (1x5, R) were retired to start the frame, and Josh Fellhauer (2x2, 3 RBI, 2 BB) came through with a run-scoring single to left field to give the home team a quick, 1-0, lead.

 

Streaks continued for both Orf and Arcia on Tuesday evening. Orf would reach base safely four times, reaching in a 14th consecutive game and has also reached safely in 37 of his last 42 games. Arcia punched a single in the third to continue his hitting streak to nine games.

 

That lone run in the first would prove to be all Houser (3-0) needed en route to staying perfect as a Shucker. In seven innings, the Oklahoma native gave up two hits and walked two, but also struck out three and never allowed a runner past first base. Houser's line gave him his second quality start with Biloxi in five starts.

 

Nick Ramirez (1x4, HR, RBI, R) launched his first homerun since July 15 to extend the Shuckers' lead to 2-0 in the fifth. The offense continued to churn after the blast, pumping out three more runs to blow the game open for the Shuckers.

 

Victor Roache (0x2, 2 BB) walked right after the Ramirez dinger and Parker Berberet (3x4, HR, RBI, 2 R) singled to put two on for Houser. A failed sacrifice attempt resulted in Roache being thrown out at third, but Berberet took his spot at second while Houser reached first.

 

Mobile (31-25) went to the bullpen and selected Adam Miller to face Rivera, who greeted the reliever with a RBI single to right field to bring home Berberet to extend the lead to 3-0, while moving Houser over to third. After a hard line out by Arcia, Houser would come in to score on a wild pitch to Orf. A high throw to Miller covering the plate allowed Rivera to scoot into third. Orf walked in front of Fellhauer, who promptly deposited an RBI single into left, bringing home Rivera for a 5-0 advantage.

 

The Shuckers added onto the lead with a three-spot in the seventh, and added another in the eighth on Berberet's first homerun of the season.

 

Manny Barreda worked a perfect ninth and collected a strikeout, and Martin Viramontes had a clean ninth with two strikeouts to secure the shutout.

 

The Shuckers go for the series victory on Wednesday night at MGM Park. LHP Josh Hader (1-2, 2.29) will take the wheel for Biloxi, while Mobile will have Braden Shipley (9-9, 3.61) work on the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Matos flashes talent in Rattlers’ win

GRAND CHUTE – Sthervin Matos can be both an exciting and exasperating player.

 

His batting average of .214 doesn’t suggest a player on the rise.

 

But there are games when the 21-year-old third baseman looks like a high-ceiling prospect.

 

Wisconsin’s 6-3 win over the Burlington Bees on Tuesday afternoon was one of them.

 

Matos went 3-for-3 at the plate with a sacrifice fly to lead a 10-hit attack and stay on a hot streak, which has seen him collect seven hits in the last three games.

 

“He’s a damn jack in the box, you never know what you’re going to get from him,” said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson with a laugh. “I just walked by him and said, ‘I can’t wait to see what Matos is going to show up tomorrow.’ ”

 

Despite his poor batting average, Matos has power and leads the Timber Rattlers in home runs (eight) and RBI (39). He has also shown speed, with 20 stolen bases.

 

“That’s the kind of player he can be,” said Erickson. “He’s high energy. He has all kinds of emotion and when he can harness his emotion, his passion for the game is awesome to watch. Today he swung the bat well.”

 

Matos provided a hustle play for Rattlers in the bottom of the eighth inning when he stretched what looked to be a single into a double. He eventually scored on a single by Luis Aviles.

 

“He makes a big turn at first, puts pressure on the defense and tries to get an extra base and gets in there,” said Erickson. “And we end up getting a run. That’s great baseball. That’s the stuff he’s capable of. We’ll continue to slap him on the back when he does things like that and kick him in the butt when you get all the other garbage.”

 

Matos, a native of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, has hit .325 in his last 10 games.

 

“I’m just seeing the ball well and trying to stay with my approach,” said Matos through Aviles, who served as an interpreter. “I’ve got the same plan for every at-bat. I just look for my pitch and try to go up the middle.”

Shuckers bomb BayBears in 9-0 win

BILOXI -- The Biloxi Shuckers turned in a complete performance Tuesday night, blasting two homers to go with a two-hit shutout as the Shuckers mauled Mobile 9-0 at MGM Park.

 

Josh Fellhauer drove in three runs. Nick Ramirez and Parker Berberet slammed solo homers, and Adrian Houser (3-0) tossed a two-hit shutout for seven innings. Manny Barreda and Martin Viramontes mopped up the final two innings.

 

"It was a pretty one-sided game," said catcher Berberet, who went 3-for-4, including his homer to left in the eighth. "We managed to throw a shutout and the bats came alive for us. We were able to save our bullpen and Houser did that for us.

 

"It was an 0-2 count (on the homer). I was looking to protect the plate. He threw me a high slider and I was able to get some wood on it.

 

"He (Houser) has been really good since he came over. I'm glad to have him on our staff."

 

Game 4 of the five-game series is Wednesday at 6:40 p.m., with Biloxi left-hander Josh Hader (1-2) facing Mobile right-hander Braden Shipley (9-9). The homestand concludesat 6:40 p.m. Thursday with Mobile, then the Shuckers head to Jackson to face the Mississippi Braves in a five-game series.

 

The Shuckers jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first, starting a two-out rally. Nathan Orf walked off Johnny Shuttlesworth (0-1), then advanced to second on a passed ball. Then Fellhauer ripped an opposite field RBI single to left for the lead.

 

Nick Ramirez set off a four-run uprising in the fifth when he slammed his 14th homer over the right field wall to lead off the inning. Yadiel Rivera ripped a RBI single, Houser scored on a wild pitch and Fellhauer hit another opposite field RBI single as Biloxi sent nine batters to the plate.

 

The Shuckers added three more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of two walks from reliever Will Locante and two errors. Berberet went deep in the eighth.

 

"It was good to see our offense come through," Biloxi manager Carlos Subero said. "It's been awhile. Fellhauer did a good job in the 4-hole. Rivera in the leadoff got two more hits. Houser did a good job throwing seven innings of shutout ball. Overall, it was a good ballgame for us."

 

It was the biggest offensive explosion for the Shuckers since posting a 10-2 win at Pensacola on July 26.

Sky Sox score in bunches by spreading hits around

 

Colorado Springs bunched its runs and spread its hits in a 10-4 victory at El Paso on Tuesday night.

 

The Sky Sox scored four times in the fourth and three times each in the sixth and eighth for the easy victory.

 

El Paso scored twice in the sixth and added two homers in the bottom of the ninth.

 

Pete Orr had three hits and Matt Dominguez two for the Sky Sox. Nine other players had one hit for the team total of 14.

 

Sky Sox starter Hiram Burgos (3-3) picked up the victory, allowing no hits and no runs in five innings. Three relievers finished the job.

 

Burgos also had two RBIs, which was tied for the team lead since RBIs were spread around nearly as much as hits.

 

Juan Centeno and Matt Clark were the others with two RBIs.

 

Four other players had a single RBI.

 

The Sky Sox starting pitchers have held El Paso to one run in 16.2 innings so far in the series. Of the Chihuahuas four hits, only one was a single. Jake Goebbert doubled and both Hector Gomez and Will Middlebrooks hit solo home runs to comprise the other three hits.

Recently-turned 28-year-old Hiram Burgos is going to be a popular minor league free agent candidate this fall, he was pulled after 84 pitches here with the five hitless innings, and remains a fringe candidate to be added to the 40-man regardless. You do have to admire how he's battled back from the 2013-2014 shoulder issues.

 

Fourteen hits, seven walks and an HBP for the Sky Sox offense.

 

Old friend LHP Caleb Thielbar fared well, however, for El Paso, he's yet to give up a run since being claimed off waivers by the Padres from the Twins.

Final: Missoula 11, Helena 4

Jordan Yamamoto was probably the only guy in Missoula that could've used a little more smoke Tuesday.

 

Smoke as in speed on his fastball, which didn't give the Missoula Osprey much trouble. Smoke as in pollution created by area forest fires, which made it hazy at Ogren-Allegiance Park but didn't seem to affect the O's vision at the plate.

 

Yamamoto was gouged for eight runs and eight hits in 2 1-3 innings as the Osprey seized control early and sailed to an 11-4 win in front of 1,545 fans. Catcher Francis Christy topped the list of heroes for the O's, hammering two home runs.

 

Christy finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. He has worked hard to improve his hitting this month and has been on a tear with four home runs in his last three starts.

 

"I wish I could tell you what it is, I'm just seeing the ball really well and it's helping my team out so I'm loving it," said Christy, who also threw out baserunner Jonathan Oquendo as he tried to steal second. "I'm just finally hitting the pitches I need to be hitting and putting a really good swing on it."

 

Missoula stretched its lead to three games over second-place Billings and Great Falls in the race for Pioneer League North Division second-half bragging rights. The Osprey are 15-10 in the second half and own the best overall record at 38-24.

 

Christy was one of three Osprey hitters that had their way with the Brewers (24-37). Jason Morozowski was 4 for 5 with two runs scored and Isan Diaz came within a triple of hitting for the cycle for the second time in three games.

 

Meanwhile, four Osprey pitchers turned in solid performances. Starter Yefrey Ramirez (5-4) earned the win, allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts in five-plus innings. Aaron Sookee, Dallas Newton and Keegan Long kept Helena at bay the rest of the way.

 

"They grinded every single pitch and Yefrey had a hell of an outing," Christy said. "Our bullpen did a great job too coming out there and pitching strong."

The Brewers broke on top in the first inning. Troy Stokes led off with a single, stole second, beat a throw to third after a Jose Cuas grounder to short and scored on a Yerison Pena sacrifice fly.

 

Missoula answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. After Morozowski and Diaz hit back-to-back singles to start the rally, Matt Railey came through with a two-out base hit beyond the reach of Helena first baseman Milan Post.

 

The Osprey used the long ball to batter Yamamato (1-6) in a two-out surge in the second. Christy smacked a solo shot over the right field fence. Then after Morozowski legged out an infield single, Diaz ripped his 10th home run to make the score 5-1.

 

Yamamoto's trouble continued in his third and final inning. Missoula loaded the bases with no outs after Marcus Wilson singled, Railey was hit by a pitch and Kal Simmons lined a base hit.

 

Wilson came home on a sacrifice fly and that spelled the end for Yamamoto. Missoula tallied three more runs with reliever Bubba Blau on the hill, the last of which came on Christy's second home run.

 

The Brewers scored a run in the fifth and chased Ramirez with two more in the sixth. Sookee came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out and performed well. Helena did cut its lead to 9-4 with a run on an Oquendo fielder's choice, but Sookee followed with an critical strikeout against the Brewers' No. 9 hitter, Carlos Belonis.

 

The Osprey added two insurance runs in the eighth. Matt McPhearson started the rally with an infield single and Christy followed with a base hit. McPhearson scored on a wild pitch and Christy on a single by Morozowski.

NOTES: The O's hold a 6-4 edge on Helena in their season series ... After Wednesday, the O's head to Helena for a two-game series.

Actually, RHP Bubba Blau allowed only one earned run of his own, but two of Jordan Yamamoto's runners scored on Blau's watch. Regardless, it was a rough outing (again) for Yamamoto, who has dazled on occasion. He's shown flashes (remember July 31st?), but 98 hits allowed in 60 innings is rough, even for a 19-year-old in the Pioneer League.

 

Mentioned this once before, but the 2016 Timber Rattlers are shaping up as a potentially power-friendly offensive club, but the arms will need to step up.

After tying the game in the bottom of the 8th, Dodgers score two in the top of the 9th to eliminate the A-Crew from postseason contention.

This, one night after the Maryvale boys lost a game in which they stole 12 bases in 13 attempts!

 

That's an insane combo!

With RF Demi Orimoloye in Japan with the Canadian Junior National squad, the team could have used the big bat of hulking 1B Tyrone Perry, but he's been sidelined for the second significant stretch this summer with an unknown injury, idle since August 12th.

Pulled after only 84 pitches. While less than 50 were for strikes, 84 pitches through 5 innings with no hits given up is an odd time to pull a guy.

 

With the Brewers starters struggling and Biloxi in the playoffs, I'm wondering if the Brewers called down and said to shorten his start, they may need him before Sept. 1.
