We'll tidy this up later this evening, but for now, please know that the Timber Rattlers game is on TWC SportsChannel, a nice option on the big league day off.

Brewers promote Denson, Gatewood

The Brewers promoted prospects Jake Gatewood and David Denson on Monday, sending both infielders to the Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Gatewood, the Brewers' No. 13 prospect returns to the Timber Rattlers after the shortstop was reassigned to Rookie-level Helena on June 12. Denson, Milwaukee's No. 27 prospect, who made national headlines earlier this month, also heads back to Wisconsin after the Brewers sent him down to the Pioneer League on May 11.

Denson, 20, was hitting .242 with six homers, 25 RBIs, five steals and a .340 on-base percentage in 51 games for the Helena Brewers after batting .195 with a homer and eight RBIs in 24 games with Wisconsin earlier this year.

Gatewood, 19, hit .274 with six homers, 41 RBIs, 23 doubles and a .331 OBP in 54 games at Helena after batting .227 with a pair of home runs and 10 RBIs in 40 games for Wisconsin to start the year. The 6-foot-5 infielder was the Brewers' Competitive Balance Round A selection in 2014 and hit .203 with 32 RBIs in 50 games last year.

Denson has penned a memorable third professional season after Milwaukee selected him in the 15th round of the 2013 Draft. He started a triple play on July 22, was named the MVP of the first Northwest-Pioneer League All-Star Game on Aug. 4 after hitting a pinch-hit homer and recorded his second two-homer game of the season on Aug. 22. In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Aug. 15, he revealed he is gay, making him the the first Minor or Major League Baseball player to publicly do so while still active.

Gatewood, batting .400 with eight RBIs in his last 10 games, has produced a handful of big games this season, going a career-best 4-for-5 on Aug. 15 and homering on consecutive days July 17-18. He missed about two weeks on the disabled list in early May.

All-Encompassing

By Bob Brainerd

Everything is bigger in Texas. So goes the famous expression of the folks hailing from the second largest state in America. Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Shortstop Blake Allemand could easily justify requesting a refund. While the roster lists Allemand at 5 foot 10 inches on a 170 pound frame, nowhere does it document the size of his heart.

Angel Ventura RHP

  • Has simplified his windup since I last saw him pitch.
His stretch is actually pretty clean.
In the windup he starts like he does in the stretch and then rocker steps back into the windup.
Still uses the classic "C" like most pitchers these days where the ball goes through 6 to 9 o'clock and forward.
High 3/4, sometimes almost a true over the top delivery.
Steps directly at the plate with a good lower half.
FB has decent arm side run.
Curve flashes plus, pitches 18 and 31 were particularly nasty.
3rd pitch appears to be some kind of cutter/slider which he didn't use much.
Spent most of the game working the "ground ball" spot, outside corner at the knees.
Strike outs dried up when he got FB happy after the 3rd Inning (Pitch 51).

People keep looking for the most overlooked pitcher in the system, continually looking at the soft tossers hoping to capture lightening in a bottle again but my answer is simple, Angel Ventura. I've been pimping him all year and few are listening. He's got an above average FB and the best curve to come through WI in a while. There's enough to at least be a credible MLB relief prospect. He's a top 30 prospect, I'd take him over Brooks Hall today without a second thought.

Final: Mobile 1, Biloxi 2 (11 Innings)

Rivera's 11th inning walk-off nets Shuckers a 2-1 victory on Monday

Jorge Lopez earned his seventh-straight quality start and 15th of 2015

Biloxi Shuckers

Jorge Lopez settled for a no decision as the Shuckers win 2-1 in 11 innings on Monday (M.K. Krebs)

BILOXI, MS – In typical MGM Park fashion, a matchup between the Biloxi Shuckers and the Mobile BayBears required extra-innings, with the Shuckers walking-off victorious, 2-1, on Yadiel Rivera’s RBI single to left field in the 11th inning on Monday night. Biloxi has six walk-off victories in 35 games at their brand new home and jumped back to 20-games over .500 in the second half of the season. The Shuckers keep pace with the M-Braves and remain three games back with 13 to play in the half

The walk-off win was the seventh in 35 games played at MGM Park and sixth in extra-innings (6-2). The Shuckers improve to 10-5 overall in extra-inning contests and 25-17 in one-run games. 12 of the 24 meetings between the Shuckers and BayBears have been decided by one run and four of the of the 14 played at MGM Park have gone to extras.

In the second-straight 11-inning game between the clubs, Nathan Orf (3x4, R, BB) singled against Jimmy Sherfy (1-6) to start the bottom of the 11th, then moved to second after a walk to Josh Fellhauer (0x3, 2 BB). Nick Shaw (0x1) came on to pinch hit, but struck out attempting to bunt for the first out of the inning. Rivera (1x5, RBI) then stroked the only hit with runners in scoring position (1-for-6) into left to bring home a hustling Orf for the winning run. Both teams combined to go 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position on Monday.

Orf extended his on-base streak to 13 games and has now reached safely in 36 of his last 41 games.

Jorge Lopez made his 23rd start of the season. The Brewers second round pick in 2011 worked out of a jam in the first after loading the bases, but struck out Gabriel Guerrero for the final out of the inning to escape unscathed. The 22-year-old did allow a run in the third after Socrates Brito singled with one out and Garrett Weber followed with a ground-rule double to put two runners in scoring position. Rudy Flores’ sacrifice fly to center plated Brito to give Mobile a 1-0 lead.

Lopez ended up allowing just the one run in his six innings on 101 pitches. The Puerto Rico native picked up his 15th quality start of the season, seventh-straight, while walking one and punching out six.

Biloxi tied the game at 1-1 in the home-half of the fifth. Tyrone Taylor (1x4, R) started things out with a single to left and Adam Weisenburger (0x1, HBP) was hit by a pitch to place two aboard for Lopez, who put down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. Brett Phillips (0x4, RBI) lifted a deep drive to right field that was caught by Guerrero, but plated Taylor to knot the game at one.

John Omahen delivered his own quality start for the BayBears. In six innings, the 26-year-old gave up the one run on two hits, two walks and six strikeouts on 101 pitches.

Jacob Barnes got the first call out of the bullpen for the Shuckers and continued his torrid pace in relief, striking out three in two innings while only allowing a hit. In 41.1 innings out of the ‘pen, the Ft. Myers native has allowed 12 earned runs for an ERA of 2.63 in 28 outings.

Damien Magnifico took the ninth and gave up a hit, but also got a strikeout to keep Mobile off the board. Jed Bradley (1-1) worked the final two frames and allowed two hits while picking up two punchouts for his first victory as a Shucker.

Orlando Arcia (1x5) extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the eighth, and has recorded at least one hit in 12 of his last 16 games.

Biloxi will look to jump in front in the five-game series in game three on Tuesday night. RHP Adrian Houser (2-0, 2.86) will try to stay perfect as a Shucker, while RHP Johnny Shuttlesworth (0-0, --) makes his first appearance as a BayBear. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Angel Ventura struck out eight and allowed one run over six innings against the Burlington Bees on Monday night. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Burlington Bees scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to erase a 2-1 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lead on Monday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Bees held on for a 4-2 victory in the first game of the three-game series.

Burlington (55-70 overall, 20-36 second half) took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Trevor Gretzky grounded into a force play at second with runners at the corners to knock in Zach Houchins from third.

That was the only run allowed by Wisconsin starting pitcher Angel Ventura. He allowed seven hits, walked none, and struck out eight over six innings.

The Timber Rattlers (43-82, 20-35) went in front in the bottom of the fourth. Tucker Neuhaus and Sthervin Matos singled to start the inning. Both moved into scoring position on a groundout by David Denson. Elvis Rubio followed with a double to left-center to drive in both Neuhaus and Matos for a 2-1 advantage.

Wisconsin held the lead until the top of the eighth inning.

Ayendy Perez reached on an infield single to start the eighth against reliever Kodi Medeiros. Zach Houchins was hit by a pitch with one out to give the Bees runners on first and second. Taylor Ward tied the game with an single to center.

Medeiros got the second out of the inning, but Steven Mateo hit a triple to the right field corner and both Houchins and Ward scored for a 4-2 lead.

Blake Allemand started the Wisconsin half of the eighth inning with a single, but Alex Klonowski retired the next three batters. Jordan Piche finished the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I had a ton of stuff to get done tonight and I wouldn't have gone to the game if not for Angel Ventura on the mound so I left after the 7th to get my errands and real work done before settling in to write this. See my previous post for thoughts on Ventura though I will say I thought scoring the Neuhaus misplay at 3rd a hit was a crock, and it directly led to the 1 run Ventura allowed. It was the one play I didn't get a good look at because I glanced down at the gun first and wish I would have had the benefit of replay because I was positive it would be scored an error. That reminds me, the 2nd hit of the game shouldn't have been a hit either, neither Gatewood or Allemand made a move to field the ball as it went between them and bounded over the bag into CF. What looked like it would be a double play off the bat turned into a hit.

Kodi Medeiros hit Houchins with an 0-2 pitch in the foot and the 8th inning spiraled downward from there. I did put the gun on Zach Cooper but he didn't do anything different from the last time I watched him pitch so I didn't post it.

In the 3 ABs I saw Jake Gatewood only chased 1 breaking ball out of the zone, and I realize it was just 3 ABs but that was a marked improvement from what he had been doing previously in WI. True to form David Denson struck out twice looking, the 2nd time he was caught guessing and froze by a pretty nice curve. He had a bit of a tough game at 1st as well; he threw low to 2nd which sabotaged a double play chance and missed 2 relatively routine scoops. Still it was nice to see both players back in WI.

Tucker Neuhaus (2-4) and Elvis Rubio (2-4,2B) had the multi hit games for the Rattlers.

Fun fact: The temp was 58 degrees at game time, that's early May weather! It was down to 55 by the time I left at 9:15 PM.

Woodruff Fuels Manatees in Tight Win

By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees

08/24/2015 10:19 PM ET

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/6/6/142829066/cuts/IMG_1873_frq2g4zo_60gjlqqx.JPG

Lakeland, FL - For the second consecutive game, the Brevard County Manatees (25-31, 54-71 overall) got a strong performance from their starting pitcher and this time, they were able to reward it as they earned a late 2-1 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (15-39, 48-75 overall) Monday at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The 'Tees jumped out to an immediate lead thanks to consecutive one-out doubles by Chris McFarland and Clint Coulter. That lead would last until the bottom of the second inning, which started with a one-out base hit to right by Curt Powell. Ben Verlander then followed with a double to center, which moved Powell to third. Jared Reaves then lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring Powell home and bring the Flying Tigers level.

The game would remain tied until the top of the seventh as the Manatees faced new Flying Tiger reliever Julio Felix. The frame started on the right note as Michael Ratterree drew a walk and then moved up to second on a sacrifice from Steven Halcomb. Angel Ortega then made it count with a single to center to bring Ratteree home and put Brevard County ahead for good.

Tyler Spurlin retired six of the seven batters he faced to earn his second save of the season.

The star of the night was Manatees starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff, who turned in a third straight stellar outing to earn his fourth win of the season. Woodruff gave up just one run on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out seven and walking one.

Jonathan Maciel pitched well enough to win for Lakeland but was ultimately left with a no-decision after giving up one run on four hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one.

The Manatees go for the series win in the rubber game on Wednesday as they turn to LHP Wei-Chung Wang (9-5, 3.75 ERA). He'll face the Florida State League leader in strikeouts, LHP Kevin Ziomek (7-10, 3.70 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Woodruff: 7 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 4/9 GO/FO

Spurlin: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K

Back to back doubles by Chris McFarland and Clint Coulter in the 1st. Not much else offensively. Woodruff was a closer in college. Maybe the Brewers are treating him like they did Damien Magnifico? Using him as a starter improves control and builds up arm strength with more innings than otherwise. He is now throwing mid-90s consistently and touching the high nineties as the Brewers were touting in the Spring.

Walk-off gives Brewers sweep

Helena Brewers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/2/2/145197622/cuts/Carlos_Belonis_h2hdoane_v0qcthap.jpg

The Helena Brewers (8-16) swept the Great Falls Voyagers (12-12) on Monday with a 3-2 walk-off win at Kindrick Field.

Pitching dominated a majority of the game for both sides as Conor Harber and Lucas Shearrow each turned in solid starts. Harber, making just his second start in professional baseball, went four innings for the Brewers, giving up just one run on three hits.

Johan Cruz gave the Voyagers the first lead of the game, hitting a solo home run in the fourth. It was his second homer of the series.

The Brewers then tied it up in the fifth when Milan Post came up with an RBI single to score Yerison Pena.

J.B. Kole threw three solid innings of solid relief following Harber, not allowing a run and just one hit. He would strike out one and walk one batter.

Helena then grabbed their first lead of the night in the seventh when Mitch Ghelfi led off with a walk and scored on a wild pitch. Ghelfi would score two of Helena's three runs Monday night.

Alex Farina (1-2) gave up an unearned run in the eighth to tie the game back up at 2-2. The Brewers infield committed two errors behind him to allow Grant Massey to score after a leadoff single.

Ghelfi led off the bottom of the ninth with a double off Danny Dopico (2-3). He advanced to third on a wild pitch in the next at-bat. Dopico was able to record two outs in the inning, but could not get through Carlos Belonis. Belonis (pictured above) came up with the bases loaded and two outs to single to left and finish the game. It was Helena's third walk-off of the season.

The Brewers now head to Missoula to take on the Osprey in a two-game series. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Suter Masters Chihuahuas In Sox 5-1 Win

Matt Dominguez's Two-Run Blast All Southpaw Needs to Defeat El Paso

By Ed Pearsall / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Brent Suter held the El Paso offense to just four hits and a walk over six shutout frames to earn his third Sky Sox win in the 5-1 contest. (File Photo from prior game by Paat Kelly)

The Sky Sox won their second straight contest behind strong pitching and timely hitting in a 5-1 defeat of the El Paso Chihuahuas before a Monday night crowd of 6,872 at Southwest University Park.

Colorado Springs starter Brent Suter (3-0, 2.59) continued to impress in his fourth start since joining the team from Double-A Biloxi at the end of July. The Sox southpaw would completely shut down the Chihuahuas offense, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out five over six sparkling innings of work.

El Paso starter Daniel McCutchen (8-7, 3.80) gave his team a solid effort as he surrendered two runs on one glaring mistake over five frames. The right-hander struck out five and walked none while serving up five hits; the biggest coming on a Matt Dominguez two-out, two-run blast in the top of the second inning. The third baseman's seventh long ball of the season gave the Sox an early two-run lead and would prove to be the only offense they would need.

The Chihuahuas offense put their lone run on the board in the home seventh when Will Middlebrooks' two-out RBI double off of Brandon Kintzler allowed Cody Decker to cross the plate. The late run cut El Paso's deficit to just one after seven innings of play as the Sox looked to add a little insure in the latter frames.

After being held scoreless since Dominguez's second-inning homer by a combination of right-handers McCutchen, Nick Vincent and Dale Thayer, Colorado Springs would break through for three runs in the ninth against Jerry Sullivan. The fourth Chihuahuas righty gave up four hits in his lone inning of work, giving up a big two-run double to pinch-hitter Brandon Macias before Kyle Wren followed with a run-scoring knock of his own.

Now holding a far more comfortable 5-1 lead heading to the home ninth, the Sky Sox deployed trusty closer Jaye Chapman to close out the Chihuahuas ninth for the second straight night. Chapman worked a perfect final frame to secure Colorado Springs' 5-1 win in El Paso. The Sky Sox improve to 55-74 with the strong team win as they drop El Paso to 69-60 on the season.

Colorado Springs will look to keep rolling as they seek their third consecutive win on Tuesday night in game three of this four-game set in El Paso. Hiram Burgos (2-3, 3.50) leads the way for the Sky Sox against a to be named Chihuahuas starter with first pitch set for 7:05 PM MDT (8:05 Central) from Southwest University Park.

Do you do this as a hobby or a desire to get into scouting?
