Jorge Ortega was the tough-luck loser Sunday, despite throwing a complete game. Lakeland scored a run in the eighth inning and hung on to win, 1-0.

After taking two of three games in Clearwater, the Brevard County Manatees continued their road trip in Lakeland, opening a three-game series on Sunday. The teams traded zeros for seven innings, before Lakeland scored a run in the eighth and hung on to win, 1-0. Manatees’ starter Jorge Ortega (9-9) suffered the loss, despite throwing his sixth complete game of the season.

Ortega allowed eight hits, struck out one and walked one. He worked out of a couple jams along the way, including the third inning, where he got some help from his defense. The inning started with back-to-back singles by Jared Reaves and Tim Remes. Tyler Hanover laid down a bunt, but Ortega pounced on it and threw to third, getting the lead runner. Ismael Salgado followed with a single to left that Jose Pena fielded. He threw a strike to catcher Dustin Houle, who put the tag on Remes.

Trent Szkutnik got the start for the Flying Tigers and pitched five shutout innings. He allowed four hits, two of those coming in the first inning. He walked one and struck out one. Gage Smith (1-0) took over in the sixth and earned the win, allowing two hits in four innings of work. Ortega gave up the only run of the day in that decisive eighth inning. Reaves led off with a single and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Remes. Hanover’s line drive single to center, plated Reaves, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Brevard County (24-31, 53-71 overall) went down swinging in the ninth, with a two out rally. Garrett Cooper was hit by a pitch and went to second on a Houle single. Pena came up with a chance to tie, but he hit a weak grounder back to Smith on the mound, who threw to first, ending the game. Houle had the only multi-hit game for the Manatees, going 2-for-4. Salgado went 2-for-4 for Lakeland and Reaves was 2-for-3 and scored the game winning run. Lakeland moved to 48-74 on the season.

Game notes: Taylor Brennan, who missed the last handful of games for the Manatees was back in the lineup Sunday and went 0-for-4. The reason for his recent absence has not been released. Omar Garcia was not in the Manatees lineup on Sunday.

The series continues Monday night at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. Brandon Woodruff (3-5, 3.75 ERA will pitch for the Manatees, against Lakeland hurler Kevin Ziomek (7-10, 3.70 ERA). First pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Jorge Ortega: 8 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 6/11 GO/FO It remains to be seen how well all those fly outs will play in the upper levels.

Dustin Houle 2 hits, Michael Ratterree with the only extra base hit for the Manatees, a double.

Rattlers go big to win game and series at Peoria

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Sthervin Matos went 4-for-5 with a single, a double, two triples, and three RBI on Sunday in Peoria (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

PEORIA, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers collected sixteen hits in a 9-5 victory over the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park on Sunday evening. Sthervin Matos had four hits and just missed the cycle while driving in three runs for Wisconsin. Blake Allemand joined Matos with four hits in the game which gave the Rattlers a victory in both this series and the season series over the Chiefs.

Wisconsin (43-81 overall, 20-34 second half) grabbed the lead in the top of the second inning. Tucker Neuhaus started the rally with a leadoff double. Matos was next and he tripled to the gap in right-center to send Neuhaus home. Greg McCall followed with an RBI single and the Rattlers lead 2-0.

The Timber Rattlers doubled their lead with two more runs in the top of the third. Allemand singled to start the inning and Neuhaus singled with one out to put runners at the corners. Matos hit an infield single to knock in Allemand. Later in the inning, Neuhaus scored on a wild pitch.

Peoria (68-55, 35-20) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Darren Seferina singled with two outs and wound up on third after a double by Oscar Mercado. Paul DeJong sent both runners home with a double and Peoria was within 4-2.

Wisconsin used some trickery to add to their lead in the top of the sixth. Omar Cotto singled with two outs and Allemand singled - his third hit of the game - to move Cotto to third. Allemand broke for second with Elvis Rubio at the plate and drew a throw. Cotto took off for the plate and beat the throw home for a 5-2 lead.

Matos stepped in after Neuhaus singled in the top of the seventh and his bid for the first cycle in Timber Rattlers fell just short, but the result was perfectly acceptable. The Wisconsin third baseman cracked a deep drive to right that banged hard off the wall for an RBI triple and a 6-2 lead.

The Rattlers kept adding to their lead when they loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth. Allemand drove in a pair of runs with a single, his fourth hit of the evening.

Matos came back to the plate in the top of the ninth and reached on a throwing error. McCall cashed the error into a run as he doubled off the wall in right to score Matos and the Rattlers were up 9-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Devin Williams retired the first Peoria batter he faced in the ninth, but he allowed a single, walked a batter, allowed an RBI double, threw a run-scoring wild pitch , and gave up an RBI single. Scott Lieser came on to get the final two outs of the game.

Luke Curtis, the second of six Wisconsin pitchers in the game, picked up his team-leading eighth win of the year with 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Matos and Allemand had just the second and third four-hit games of the season by a Timber Rattler. The only other four-hit game by a Rattler this season was when Carlos Leal had one at Burlington on April 10.

Wisconsin won the series two games to one over the Chiefs for their first road series victory since taking two of three at Dayton June 10-12.

The Timber Rattlers also took the season series with eight wins to seven for the playoff-bound Chiefs.

The Timber Rattlers return home on Monday night to start a series with the Burlington Bees. Angel Ventura (6-6, 3.22) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Jake Jewell (5-7, 4.93) is scheduled to start for the Bees. Game time is 7:05pm.

Monday night is a chance for you to add to your bobblehead collection. The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a bobblehead of 2011 Timber Rattler and current Milwaukee Brewer Jimmy Nelson courtesy of Bumper-to-Bumper Auto Parts. If you can't make it out to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Monday, there are several ways to catch the action. Wisconsin Boxscore

First off, how lame is Peoria for playing a 6 PM game, on a Sunday, on a getaway day? This was just the 2nd or 3rd time the Rattlers have played on a Sunday night all year.

Blake Allemand... even though his hitting streak ended on Friday he's still hitting .415 over his last 10 and has pushed his AVE all the way up to .270 from the .220s! Freaking Sthervin Matos has all kinds of talent... he has power, runs well, defends well, is light on his feet, and has a strong arm. The one tool he lacks is the most important, the hit tool, his decision making process at the plate leaves quite a bit to be desired, but every once in a while he'll flash offensive brilliance like he did tonight. For what it's worth Elvis Rubio is a very similar player to Matos all the way around.

I love me some offensive explosions and it was nice to see Tucker Neuhaus (3-5,2B) put together a strong game. His last multi hit effort was on Aug 11th and they've been all too rare, with just 15 games in which he's collected more than 1 hit. Greg McCall (2-4,2B,BB) had been in a tail spin with 5 straight 0 fer games but has bounced back with multi hit games the last 2 nights. It's been rough going for Omar Cotto (2-4,BB) since he joined the Rattlers, hopefully he can end the season on an upswing.

Wisconsin still has 14 pitchers on the roster and they used nearly half of them in this game; Luke Curtis(2.2IP), Tyler Linehan(.2IP), Gian Rizzo(1.1IP), and Scott Lieser(.2IP) put up zeros. Josh Uhen and Devin Williams left room for improvement. While I'm thinking about it my one criticism of manager Matt Erickson would be his use of Rizzo. He's not a guy to be brought in mid inning to get out of jam, he doesn't have an out pitch. He has pretty good control, mixes well, and catches hitters looking for many of his strike outs. However, hitters aren't going to swing through his breaking stuff very often and his FB is just a tick above average. He's allowed more runs than his ERA would suggest as those runs were charged to the pitchers he came on in relief of.

Final: Mobile 3, Biloxi 2 (11 Innings)

Arcia homers twice in Shuckers 3-2 loss to BayBears in extras

Orlando Arcia records first career multi-homer game in 11-inning loss in series opener

Biloxi Shuckers

Orlando Arcia has three of Biloxi's five homers in the month of August. (M.K. Krebs)

BILOXI, MS - Orlando Arcia recorded his first multi-homer game with solo shots in the first and fourth on Sunday, but the Biloxi Shuckers fell to the Mobile BayBears, 3-2 in 11 innings, in front of 2,608 at MGM Park. Biloxi stranded eight men on base and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The loss also drops the Shuckers to 9-5 in extra-inning contests, 5-2 at MGM Park, as well as 24-17 in one-run games.

The Shuckers dropped the opener of the five-game series and now the top three teams in the Southern League South Division, Mississippi, Pensacola and Mobile are separated by just a ½ game. Biloxi sits 3.0 games back with 14 left to play.

Arcia (3x4, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) kick-started the offense with a bang in the first, launching his first solo home run off the top of the netting in left field and onto Caillavet Street for a quick, 1-0, lead. The 21-year-old collected his second long ball in three games with the blast. He also extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Biloxi (28-27) turned to Brooks Hall for a spot start in game one of the series. The 25-year-old allowed two base runners in the first, but worked out of trouble, and faced four batters in a scoreless second. The trouble came in the third for the South Carolina native, when he surrendered a two-run homerun to Socrates Brito to put the Shuckers in a one-run deficit.

Drew Gagnon came on in relief of Hall and rolled through the Mobile lineup through 4.2 innings of work, walking one batter and giving up just one hit while striking out three. Sunday was the 25-year-old's second consecutive scoreless appearance of four or more innings out of the bullpen, and stretched his scoreless-inning streak to 10.1 innings.

Arcia lifted his second blast over Caillavet Street behind the left field wall in the fourth, to tie the game at two. With the multi-home run performance, the shortstop became the first Shucker to record two long balls in a game in the young history of MGM Park. Chattanooga's Kennys Vargas hit two for Chattanooga on July 18.

Biloxi loaded the bases in the ninth to set up a potential seventh walk-off at MGM Park. Victor Roache (1x5) singled to start the frame and moved to second two batters later after Taylor Green (0x3, 2 BB) drew a walk. A two-out free pass to pinch hitter Nick Shaw (0x0, BB) loaded the bases and prompted a pitching change from the BayBears with Brett Phillips (1x5) due up. The first pitch from reliever Jake Barrett (3-0) skipped past the catcher Ronnie Freeman. Roache broke for the plate, but was tagged out on a play at the plate to end the inning and send the game to extras.

Yhonathan Barrios (IP, 2 H, 3 SO) and Damien Magnifico (IP, BB, SO) worked the eighth and ninth innings, keeping the BayBears off the board while combining for four strikeouts.

Mobile (30-24) took the lead in the 11th against reliever Manny Barreda (1-1). A one-out triple by Evan Marzilli put the go-ahead run just 90 feet away for Jack Reinheimer, who lined a single to center to put the Shuckers back down a run.

Biloxi went down in order in the bottom-half of the 11th against Jimmy Sherfy (SV, 2).

The Shuckers look to even up the five-game set on Monday night at MGM Park. RHP Jorge Lopez (12-5, 2.32) will look to extend his league lead in wins for Biloxi, while Mobile will send out RHP John Omanhen (6-1, 3.10). First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Final: Helena 6, Great Falls 2

Helena secures series win over GF

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (7-16) won their third straight game on Sunday, topping the Great Falls Voyagers (12-11) 6-2 at Kindrick Field in Helena.

Junior Rincon (4-4) made his first start since the 2011 season to get the win for the Brewers. He would pitch a season-high five innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He struck out five and walked one.

All of Great Falls' scoring came in the top of the third when Antonio Rodriguez hit a two-run home run to also score Landon Lassiter. The Voyagers have homered in every game of this series.

Helena responded with six runs over the next three innings off Brannon Easterling (5-3). Easterling gave up six runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

Troy Stokes got the scoring started for the Brewers with an RBI double to score Carlos Belonis. Stokes later scored on a wild pitch.

Belonis added a two-run homer in the fourth, his second home run in as many days. He is now in a tie for most home runs on the team with seven. Steven Karkenny and Jose Cuas also share the lead.

Christian Trent and Nate Griep combined for four shutout innings of relief. Griep, who pitched the final three, earned his first professional save.

Helena has won three consecutive games for just the second time this season and secured their first series win over the Voyagers since 2013.

Helena and Great Falls will face off in the finale of their four-game series on Monday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Helena Box Score

First it was a two-inning, then three, now five-inning outing for the fireballing 23-year-old failed closer Junior Rincon, we'll see into 2016 perhaps if the role conversion pays off; just-turned 21-year-old OF Carlos Belonis' power-speed combo was on display here and remains intriguing, 1.069 OPS in August is awesome -- all about season-long progressions...

Final: Colorado Springs 3, El Paso 2

Sky Sox Play Long Ball To Down El Paso

The Sky Sox defeated the El Paso Chihuahuas by a hair on Sunday evening with a late 3-2 win before a crowd of 8,273 at Southwest University Park.

Sox starter Josh Roenicke (7-10, 5.96) allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.2 innings of work. The right-hander would make just one mistake, serving up a first-inning solo shot to El Paso right fielder Hunter Renfroe that gave the Chihuahua’s a 1-0 lead they maintained until the Sky Sox fifth.

Kyle Wren grounded a two-run single to center against El Paso starter and former big league Brewer Chris Smith (4-6, 3.77) to give Colorado Springs their first lead of the night. Smith would depart after six innings of work, allowing those two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five along the way.

The Sox would maintain this slim one-run advantage until the seventh when Matt Long’s sixth home run of the season put the visiting squad up by two against reliever Michael Dimock and the Chihuahuas.

Preston Guilmet would surrender El Paso’s final run of the night in the home eighth on a Renfroe leadoff double and Jake Goebbert RBI sac fly.

Colorado Springs took a 3-2 lead into what proved to be the final frame with Jaye Chapman taking over on the mound for El Paso’s last chance at the plate. The right-hander tossed a perfect frame to secure the 3-2 win and his 13th save of the season. The Sky Sox improve to 54-74 with the win as they drop El Paso to 69-59 on the season.

The Sox will look to make it two straight in their second of four games with these same Chihuahuas on Monday evening. Sox southpaw Brent Suter (2-0, 3.44) takes the mound against El Paso righty Daniel McCutchen (8-6, 3.81) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM MDT (8:05 Central) at Southwest University Park.

Arcia shows patience, goes yard twice

Brewers top prospect records first two-homer game in Shuckers loss

By Alex Kraft / MiLB.com

Orlando Arcia is known as a fiery player, but it was at his most relaxed that he did his best work at the plate on Sunday.

The Brewers' top prospect went deep in his first two at-bats, registering his first career two-homer game in Double-A Biloxi's 3-2, 11-inning loss to Mobile at MGM Park.

Both blasts came off BayBears starter Brandon Sinnery. They saw the normally free-swinging Arcia showcase his improving plate discipline.

"I could see by the way he was taking pitches," Shuckers hitting coach Sandy Guerrero. "I thought he was really calm in his at bats."

The coach was particularly impressed by the shortstop's second blast, which saw him battle back after falling behind in the count.

"The second at-bat, he was down, 1-2, and [sinnery] tried to throw a fastball high and in to get him off the plate," Guerrero said. "He hit his second home run on that pitch, which is a really tough situation when you have two strikes and you're trying to make contact. I think that was really impressive what he did."

Arcia, who Guerrero said often comes to sit by him in the dugout after his at-bats, came back after the second homer and proudly recounted how he succeeded on the two-strike count. The coach shared his pupil's excitement.

"They were not cheap home runs, they were hit pretty well," Guerrero said.

Arcia has three home runs in August, his most in any month this season. The Venezuela native is not known for his power, but Guerrero suggested that perception may be misguided.

"Every time a guy hits two home runs in a game, it's a surprise, especially under the situation that he hit them," Guerrero said. "The ball jumps off his bat enough for him to hit home runs. It's not like he's going to be a home run-type guy, but if he hits the ball high, he's able to hit the ball out of the park."

The 21-year-old has displayed consistency at the plate throughout the year. With the exception of a .247 average in June, Arcia hasn't hit below .275 in any month in his first taste of Double-A ball.

"Basically it's his work ethic," Guerrero said. "We try to work towards perfection. Not overwork, but just if you're going to work five minutes, let's work the best five minutes that you can. He's been doing that the whole year and he keeps getting better and better.

"He's always placed balls to all fields, so I think the consistency that he has found has been on his work ethic before the game. He's done it all year and, hopefully, he'll keep doing it his whole career."

MLB.com's No. 13 overall prospect already is considered one of the Minor Leagues' best defensive shortstops. However, his offensive game may not be far off.

"In a game like today, you go, 'Well, he's ready,'" Guerrero said. "But it's almost impossible right now for a kid his age to get [to the Majors] and see if he's ready or not.

"Does he show sometimes that he's ready? Yes, he does. He shows some nights that he's ready to go and do it in the big leagues, and some nights he doesn't. He's got to stay more consistent on having at-bats like the ones tonight, but he's well on the way. He's not far."

Mobile broke through in the 11th on an RBI single by D-backs' No. 12 prospect Jack Reinheimer off reliever Manny Barreda (1-1).

Jake Barrett (3-0) got the win after giving up a hit and striking out one in 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Jimmy Sherfy fanned one in a perfect 11th for his second save.
