Colorado Springs' Ariel Pena racks up double-digit strikeouts with his 10th K in a 5-2 win over Tacoma (no audio)

The next time the Brewers need a 5th starter is Saturday 9/5 in Cincinnati.

 

With RHP Zach Davies on the mound tonight, his next regular turns with the Sky Sox would be Thursday 8/27 and Tuesday 9/1, so he'd be pitching on three days rest on the 5th. That's not going to happen.

 

So while he's still the prime candidate for the 5th spot, the Brewers could get creative, start Davies at home in Miller Park at any point during the Miller Park Pirates' series 9/1 thru 9/3, and shuffle others as needed.

 

We'll see...Davies may have as few as two Colorado Springs starts remaining before a potential call-up.

The DSL Brewers 2015 season came to an end with an 8-2 loss to the Mets on Saturday. Maiker Pinto started and took the loss, retiring just two of the nine batters he faced in the first inning and allowing seven runs, though only three were earned. Juan Diaz followed and went 4.1 innings, allowing one run and Boanerges Nova worked the final three scoreless frames. Right fielder Anderson Jesus had the lone multi-hit game for the Brewers, going 2-for-4. Ignacio Otaño, Bryan Torres, Bismar Nunez and Josue Herrera each added a single.

JACKSON, TN - Biloxi Shucker fans had a hard time exhaling on Saturday, as Biloxi used some magic to maneuver its way out of helpless situations all night before taking the series finale over the Jackson Generals, 2-1, at the Ballpark at Jackson. The Shuckers pitching staff stranded 12 base runners in the win, while holding Jackson to 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position. On three occasions Saturday night, the Shuckers escaped bases loaded, nobody out jams unscathed. The Shuckers leave Tennessee by taking four of five from the Generals and win the season series by taking nine of the 15 meetings.

 

The cardiac clams entered the eighth trailing 1-0. Nick Shaw (0x1, R, 2 BB) drew a free pass against reliever Trey Cochran-Gill (4-3) to start things off and moved over to third on a single by Brett Phillips (1x4, R), who advanced to second on the throw to third. Orlando Arcia (1x4) lined out to short and Nathan Orf (1x4) popped up to first on a bunt attempt.

 

With lefty Josh Fellhauer (2x3, 2 RBI) due up, the Generals turned to Paul Fry to get the lefty-lefty matchup. Fellhauer made Jackson pay with an infield single, plating both Shaw and Phillips to take the one-run advantage. Phillips scored his minor league-leading 104th run of the season.

 

Jackson hopped on the board early with a run in the first. Ian Miller singled to start the inning, but was picked off the bases before Tyler Smith walked to follow. Marcus Littlewood doubled the runner over to third, and Aderlin Rodriguez's sacrifice fly to right brought the runner home to put the Shuckers in a 1-0 hole.

 

Biloxi starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson flirted with disaster all night, but only allowed one run in his five-plus innings of work. The southpaw loaded the bases with nobody out in both the third and fourth innings, but escaped both jams without any damage. After allowing the first two to reach to start the sixth, the 24-year-old was lifted for Jacob Barnes (4-5).

 

After allowing a single on his first pitch out of the bullpen to Tyler Marlette, Barnes struck out Jabari Henry looking and Luis Caballero swinging for the first two outs, then got a fly out to center by Ian Miller to escape with the Shuckers trailing by just a run.

 

Barnes worked two innings in relief and struck out five while allowing just one hit in the winning effort.

 

Top Mariners right-handed pitching prospect Edwin Diaz took the mound for Jackson and did not allow a hit until Fellhauer's single with two outs in the fourth. He ended up tossing six shutout innings in a no decision.

 

Manny Barreda walked two in the eighth, but left both of those runners stranded. Yhonathan Barrios took the ninth and needed just seven pitches - five for strikes - to pick up his fifth save with the Shuckers.

 

Biloxi will head back home to MGM Park to face off against the Mobile BayBears for five. RHP Brooks Hall (7-8, 4.33) will make his first start since July 29 against the Generals. Mobile will send out RHP Brandon Sinnery (5-6, 5.55). First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 4:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. We posted this in the spring via Baseball America about two Dominican Summer League Brewers players --

 

Most interesting among the Yankees’ roll of released players are a pair of Dominican amateurs signed last July 2 (2014). Outfielder Adolfo Morillo signed for $50,000 (at age 16) and catcher Bismar Nunez signed for $10,000 (at age 19) just nine months ago, but New York released both players on March 31 rather than keep them in extended spring training. Neither played a game for a Yankees affiliate.

 

Morillo, still 17 until next month, only posted a .550 OPS in 145 at-bats.

 

Nunez, in his age 20 season, posted a fine .311/.351/.415 (.766 OPS) in 32 games (106 AB's).

 

Between the good folks at Miller Park Prospects and what we do here, you'll see season-ending recaps on each affiliate during September.

 

As for breakout newcomers, 18-year-old SS Ignacio Otano posted intriguing offensive (.821 OPS) and defensive (35 errors) numbers in 50 games. Panamanian RHP Carlos Luna was spectacular over nine appearances (eight starts), and was named the MVP pitcher of the DSL All-Star Game.

Gomber, Peoria beat Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, IL - Austin Gomber picked up his Midwest League leading fourteenth win of the season on Saturday night as the Peoria Chiefs took an early lead and held on for a 4-2 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Saturday night at Dozer Park.

 

Wisconsin (42-81 overall, 19-34 second half) put two runners on with two outs in the first inning thanks to an error and a walk, but they could not score against Gomber.

 

The Chiefs (68-54, 35-19) had runners at the corners with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Harrison Bader smacked a single to left to score the first run of the game. Brian O'Keefe and Nick Thompson followed with back-to-back RBI singles and the Chiefs were up 3-0.

 

Peoria added to their lead in the second inning. Oscar Mercado singled with two outs and stole second, his league-leading 47th steal of the season. Paul DeJong drove in Mercado with a single and Wisconsin was down 4-0.

 

Gomber didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning, but it got him into a big jam. Greg McCall dropped a single into right to start the inning. Luis Aviles followed with a single and Tucker Neuhaus drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. The left-hander escaped with a pair of strikeouts and a grounder to short to keep Wisconsin off the scoreboard.

 

Jon Perrin settled in after the first two innings and set a single-game high as a professional for strikeouts in a game as he punched out seven Peoria batters over five innings, but the Rattlers offense gave him no support.

 

Gomber left with ten strikeouts after six innings of two-hit, shutout baseball in line for the win. He has allowed one run on five hits while striking out seventeen in 13-2/3 innings against the Timber Rattlers this season.

 

Blake Allemand doubled to lead off the top of the eighth against reliever Dixon Llorens, but he was left stranded when the inning ended.

 

The Timber Rattlers staged a rally in the ninth against Llorens. Aviles walked with one out. Then, Tucker Neuhaus singled and Mitch Meyer drew a walk to load the bases and send Llorens out of the game.

 

Chiefs closer Kyle Grana entered the game for Llorens and walked Sthervin Matos to force in a run. Allemand was next and his popup to medium right was dropped by Seferina, the second baseman. Neuhaus scored on the play, but the Chiefs were able to force Matos at second for the second out of the inning. Grana earned his twentieth save of the season by getting the final out of the game on a grounder to third.

 

Wisconsin stranded ten runners on base and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the game.

 

Gomber is 13-0 in his last seventeen starts. He has won six consecutive starts.

 

The final game of the series is Sunday evening at Dozer Park. Josh Uhen (1-3, 5.68) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Landon Beck will make his Midwest League debut as Peoria's starting pitcher on Sunday. Game time is 5:00pm.

So I suppose I should acquaint everyone with Austin Gomber as he appears to be another savvy Cards later round draft pick who will over achieve his raw stuff. He's in the top 6 in every significant pitching category and is the league leader in Ks with 132. Here's the relevant portion of his BA scouting report from last year's draft:

...The Owls and Gomber were having tougher luck in 2014, compounded when Gomber missed his first two scheduled starts in May with what was described as "fatigue and arm soreness" in a media report. If he's healthy, Gomber presents scouts with a good-bodied lefty at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, with a track record of throwing strikes. When at his best, Gomber features two solid-average pitches in his 88-91 mph fastball that touches 93, and a changeup that earns above-average grades, though it's not quite plus for most scouts. Gomber's breaking ball remains inconsistent and below-average. He has shown some potential with the slider, but it's not as refined as his fastball and changeup. If healthy, Gomber could go as high as the third round.

 

Regardless of what Gomber is or isn't that 5th inning was a missed opportunity. The Rattlers do "battle" right to the end which speaks well to the character of the players even though the results this season haven't been stellar.

How did Johnny Hellweg get credited with the win for the Manatees (box score)? He only went four innings. RHP Tristan Archer, who followed up with four scoreless, should have the victory, right?

 

I thought you had to go 5 to get the win as a starter but even if the Minor Leagues have an exception to that, Hellweg was largely ineffective while Archer was great so if there is judgement involved, Tristan should have got the win. Not that it matters much.

Brewers win second straight

 

Powered by the trio of David Denson, Troy Stokes and Yerison Pena, the Helena Brewers slugged their way to an 8-4 win over Great Falls on Saturday.

 

The three each had a pair of hits in the win, with Denson leading the way. He finished 2 for 4 -- with both of his hits clearing the wall for home runs. The first came in the third inning, and the second was in the seventh. Both were solo shots.

 

Stokes finished 2 for 2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored, while Pena was 2 for 4 with two runs scores. In all, Helena picked up 10 hits in the win.

 

The game was tied 1-1 after the first, but the Brewers (22-36) added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and four in the third to take control. Great Falls (29-29) chipped away at the deficit, but Helena held on to take a second consecutive win.

 

The teams will face off again in a 1:05 PM (2:05 Central) Sunday contest, again at Kindrick Legion Field.

Salas, Seidenberger Dominate in 5-1 Victory

Clearwater, FL - Javi Salas dominated over six innings as the Brevard County Manatees (24-30, 53-70) defeated the Clearwater Threshers (34-22, 71-55) 5-1 on Saturday night at Bright House Field.

 

Salas (8-8, 4.21 ERA) allowed just one run on five hits and one walk over six frames to earn the win. He struck out five.

 

Trevor Seidenberger tossed three shutout frames to earn his fifth save of the year.

 

The Manatees opened the scoring and took the lead for good in the fourth inning. With two outs, Clint Coulter smacked a solo homer to left field. It was Coulter's 13th home run of the year. The next batter, Garrett Cooper, homered to the opposite field to double the Brevard County lead. Cooper's eighth homer of the season marked the second time this week that Coulter and Cooper launched back-to-back home runs. The duo also hit consecutive homers on Monday night in Daytona.

 

The lone Clearwater run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI ground out by Dylan Cozens.

 

Brevard County added an insurance run in the seventh. Cooper and Rafael Neda singled consecutively to start the frame. Two batters later, Michael Ratterree lined a single to left field. Cooper scored and gave the Manatees a two-run advantage.

 

The Manatees completed the scoring in the ninth. Cooper was hit by a pitch with no outs. After two outs were recorded, Ratterree drew a walk. Steven Halcomb then drilled a two-run triple to left field and made it 5-1, Brevard County.

 

Victor Arano (4-12, 4.89 ERA) took the loss. He gave up three runs on eight hits in seven innings.

 

After taking two of three games in Clearwater, the Manatees will head to Lakeland to start a three-game series with the Flying Tigers tomorrow. RHP Jorge Ortega (9-8, 2.48 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. The Flying Tigers will send LHP Trent Szkutnik (1-4, 6.75 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

This was the best start for Javi Salas since June 17th. It's been quite a while. Trevor Seidenberger has also struggled a little bit but did fine here. Omar Garcia, Garrett Cooper and Steven Halcomb all had 2 hit nights. Manatees "improved" to 22-41 on the road (they are a couple of games above .500 at home). It's been kind of a lost year for Michael Ratterree but remember he had that hand/wrist break in Spring Training and may not be fully recovered from that.

Tacoma Rains On Sox Parade In 7-4 Loss

 

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Sky Sox dropped their series-finale with a 7-4 loss to the Tacoma Rainiers before a crowd of 4,981 at Security Service Field on Saturday night.

 

The Sky Sox would break through for two runs against Rainiers starter Forrest Snow (9-8, 3.97) in the home second to open the night’s scoring. Kyle Wren’s one-out double plated Matt Dominguez and Matt Long to give Colorado Springs an early 2-0 advantage.

 

Tacoma would tie it up in the very next frame against Sox starter Zach Davies (1-1, 5.14) after the right-hander served up three singles and a walk in consecutive at-bats. One-out singles by Chris Taylor and Jabari Blash did the damage for Tacoma as the knotted contest headed to the home third.

 

Colorado Springs retook the lead when Michael Reed came around to score on a Juan Centeno RBI single after the outfielder led off the frame with a booming double to left. The Sox third run would be the last allowed by Snow as the right-hander departed after five innings having allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three.

 

The Rainiers would tag Davies for four more runs over his final two innings of work, once again knotting the ballgame on a Steve Baron RBI forceout in the fourth before taking the lead for good in the fifth. Blash hit his third home run of the four-game set to lead off the fifth, giving Tacoma their first lead of the night with the new 4-3 advantage. Patrick Kivlehan followed with a base hit before Daniel Paolini reached on a Luis Sardinas fielding error. Patrick Brady added an RBI groundout before Leury Bonilla capped the frame’s scoring with a two-out RBI single. Davies would strike out Steve Baron to end the frame and his evening with Tacoma now leading 6-3. In all, Davies was charged with six runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings of work.

 

Austin Ross took over for Davies after a scoreless Sox fifth, allowing a run on two walks and two singles in the Rainiers sixth. Paolini drove in the lone run of the frame with an RBI base knock to extend their lead to 7-3 through six innings of play.

 

Colorado Springs scratched their final run across in the home seventh against reliever Mayckol Guaipe on a Pete Orr run-scoring ground out. Centeno crossed the plate to cut the Sox deficit to 7-4 heading into the contests final two innings.

 

The Sox southpaw duo of Jeremy Horst and Michael Strong combined to toss two shutout frames, keeping Tacoma off the board the rest of the way to give the home team a fighting chance at another comeback win.

 

Unfortunately for Colorado Springs, the Rainiers bullpen proved just as strong over those pivotal final frames. Guaipe tossed a scoreless eighth before right-hander Tony Zych came in to close out the 7-4 contest in the ninth. The Rainiers closer did just that to earn his fourth save of the season, shipping Tacoma off on a high note with the four-game series-split. Tacoma improves to 60-68 with the win as Colorado Springs falls to 53-74 on the season.

 

The Sky Sox will look to get back into the win column as they head off to Texas on Sunday to play the El Paso Chihuahuas in the first of a four-game set with the top affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Josh Roenicke (6-10, 6.20) gets the call for Colorado Springs and will face off against El Paso right-hander Chris Smith (4-5, 3.81) with first pitch slated for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) from Southwest University Park.

Denson goes yard twice in Helena victory

Brewers No. 27 prospect records second multi-homer game of season

David Denson has shown courage off the field in recent weeks. On Saturday night, he put the spotlight back on the diamond by showing off his power.

 

The Brewers' No. 27 prospect recorded his second two-homer game of the season to power Rookie-level Helena to an 8-4 win over Great Falls at Kindrick Legion Field.

 

Denson came into the contest with just one multi-hit game since July 17. He blasted his way out of that slump, starting in the third inning. After flying out in his first at-bat, the 20-year-old first baseman slugged a solo shot to left field off starter Matt Ball for his first homer since going yard twice on July 12.

 

After striking out in the fourth, Denson came up in the seventh with the bases empty and gave fans a familiar sight with a homer to left-center off reliever Braulio Ortiz. The California native surpassed his career high of six jacks with the second blast of the game.

 

Denson finished last summer with Class A Wisconsin and returned to the Midwest League to start his third professional season. But after hitting .195 with one homer in 24 games for the Timber Rattlers, he was reassigned to the Pioneer League.

 

The left-handed hitter found his stride, posting a .250 average with four homers and 13 RBIs to earn a trip to the Northwest/Pioneer League All-Star Game on Aug. 5. There, Denson went 2-for-3 with a pinch homer, two RBIs and two runs scored en route to receiving the league's Top Star Award.

 

Earlier this month, Denson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he's gay, becoming the first baseball player in the affiliated Minor or Major Leagues to publicly do so while still active.

 

Denson's post-All-Star break numbers have been less stellar, but he's beginning to turn things around. The 2013 15th-round pick has six hits, including five for extra bases, seven RBIs and two walks in his last five games.

 

Carlos Belonis -- who turned 21 on Wednesday -- slugged his sixth homer and tied a career high with four RBIs for the Brewers.

 

Starter Joshua Torres (3-3) got the win, allowing a run on three hits and a walk with a career-high nine strikeouts over five innings.

 

Ball (2-6) yielded seven runs -- six earned -- on eight hits and a walk while fanning five in three frames.
