Houser feeling at-home with new organization

Former Locust Grove pitcher Adrian Houser has found a new home with the Milwaukee Brewers organization since being traded in July.

 

Since the trade Houser has posted a 2-0 record and 2.86 ERA with the Biloxi Shuckers, Milwaukee’s Double-A affiliate. The right-hander has also struck out 23 batters in 22 innings pitched.

 

“I mean something just clicked for me after the trade,” Houser said. “I just got more relaxed on the mound and stopped worrying and overthinking things. I just feel really comfortable on the mound right now.”

 

Houser was sent to the Brewers from the Houston Astros organization with teammates Josh Hader and Brett Phillips. The trio made the 641-mile trip from Corpus Christi, TX to Biloxi, MS together after receiving the news of being traded. Since then the Shuckers have welcomed the newcomers, while the three also formed a special bond of their own.

 

“It’s great to have Hader and Phillips here with me,” Houser said. “I think that’s what helped me with the transition of the trade. It’s always nice to have some familiar faces around you. And the guys here are really cool and made it easy for us to join with them.”

 

Houser and Hader both received starts on the mound Thursday in a double-header at Jackson, the Seattle Mariners affiliate. Houser began the day by notching his second straight win in a five-inning performance. The Locust Grove product only gave up a lone run on seven hits, and struck out six batters.

 

In Houser’s previous outing, against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Aug. 13, he picked up his first win as a Shucker. Houser gave up two runs in six innings while striking out a season-high eight batters.

 

“I feel really comfortable and right where I need to be with (Biloxi),” Houser said. “It’s pretty nice.”

Despite out-hitting the Mets 15-12, the Brewers fell by a score of 9-5. Wuilder Rodriguez started and took the loss after giving up three runs over five innings of work. Yomelbin Almonte followed Rodriguez and got roughed up for six runs, five earned in just an inning and two-thirds. Ignacio Otaño went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, but also committed his 33rd error of the season. Jay Feliciano also collected three hits while Javier Castillo and Josue Herrera each contributed a pair of hits.

JACKSON, TN - For the first time in five series, the Biloxi Shuckers won't have to wait for a rubber match to decide a series as the fightin' oysters took down the Jackson Generals, 3-0, on Friday night at the Ballpark at Jackson. Thanks to starter Tyler Wagner and reliever Damien Magnifico, Friday marked the 13th shutout of the season for Biloxi, and moved the team within 2.5 games of first place in the Southern League South division in the second half.

 

Tyler Wagner (10-5) scattered six hits across his seven shutout innings of work, while walking one and striking out six. The Las Vegas native ran into a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the fifth, but got a lineout to right by Ian Miller and induced one of four double plays turned on Friday from Zach Shank to escape the threat. The 24-year-old now has 16 quality starts on the season and has reached the 10-win plateau for a third consecutive season as a professional, and has tossed 14.1 consecutive scoreless innings. He's recorded back-to-back outings of seven shutout innings.

 

Biloxi starting pitchers have recorded 50 quality starts, which is more that Jacksonville and Jackson have in total wins. The rotation has seven quality starts over the last 10 games, posting a 1.00 ERA, allowing just six earned runs over their last 54 innings pitched. Overall, the rotation has a 3.11 ERA.

 

Biloxi (27-26) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Yadiel Rivera (1x3, R, 3B) picked up his first hit since coming back to the Shuckers from Triple-A Colorado Springs, snapping an 0-for-10 on a triple to center. Tyrone Taylor (1x3, RBI) plated the runner on a squeeze bunt to the left side of the infield to give Biloxi a 1-0 lead.

 

Orlando Arcia (1x4, HR, 2 RBI, R) added insurance for the Shuckers in the ninth with a two-run shot to left-centerfield, bringing home Brett Phillips (1x3, R, BB) for the 3-0 advantage. It was Arcia's first homerun since July 15.

 

Damien Magnifico picked up his 17th save by working the final two innings and allowing just one hit. Magnifico is 17 of 19 in save opportunities.

 

Biloxi will look to take its fourth game of the series on Saturday night in game five of the set and the final meeting between the clubs in 2015. LHP Hobbs Johnson (7-6, 3.45) will take the mound for the Shuckers, while Jackson (17-36) will send out RHP Edwin Diaz (3-10, 4.59). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Rattlers win second straight with 2-1 victory at Peoria

PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers edged the Peoria Chiefs 2-1 Friday night at Dozer Park. Cody Ponce, Gian Rizzo, and David Burkhalter combined to hold the Chiefs to one run while Luis Aviles and Elvis Rubio provided all the offense the Rattlers would need.

 

Aviles gave Wisconsin (42-80 overall, 19-33 second half) the lead in the top of the third inning with a leadoff home run. The homer was the first by a Timber Rattlers player on the road since July 22 when Aviles homered at Cedar Rapids. That homerless stretch spanned twelve road games.

 

Peoria (67-54, 34-19) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Oscar Mercado doubled to start the inning for the first hit off Ponce. Paul DeJong followed with a single and Mercado scored to tie the game.

 

Wisconsin went back in front in the top of the fifth. Sthervin Matos reached on an error and Blake Allemand drew a walk. Rubio came through with a sharp single to center and Matos raced home with the run to put the Rattlers up 2-1.

 

Ponce, the Timber Rattlers starting pitcher, went 5-1/3 innings and held the Chiefs to one run on four hits while striking out four. Rizzo took over with one out and in the bottom of the sixth and quickly got the final two outs of the frame to maintain the lead.

 

Burkhalter relieved Rizzo to start the bottom of the seventh. Burkhalter pitched around a two-out double in the seventh and a one-out single in the eighth to hold Wisconsin's slim margin. Rubio aided the cause with an excellent running catch in right-center for the final out of the eighth inning. The right-hander nailed down his team-leading sixth save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

 

The Timber Rattlers are 7-6 in thirteen games against the Chiefs this season, including 2-2 at Dozer Park.

 

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday night at Dozer Park. Jon Perrin (1-4, 3.89) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Austin Gomber (13-3, 2.93) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 6:30pm.

Early Runs Propel Manatees Over Threshers

Clearwater, FL - The Brevard County Manatees' (23-30, 52-70) offense scored early and often in a 6-5 victory over the Clearwater Threshers (34-21, 71-54) on Friday night at Bright House Field.

 

The Brevard County offense struck early. With two outs in the first inning, Clint Coulter and Garrett Cooper walked consecutively. Dustin Houle then singled to right field and plated Coulter. The next batter, Jose Pena, lined a base hit to left and scored Cooper.

 

The Manatees made it 3-0 in the second frame. Steven Halcomb lined a single to right field to lead things off. Halcomb then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After an Angel Ortega walk, Omar Garcia grounded in to a double play, but scored Halcomb in the process.

 

After Clearwater plated a run, the Brevard County offense responded immediately. With one out in the third, Cooper clubbed his 32nd double of the season. After Houle was hit by a pitch, Pena drilled an RBI double to center field. Pena finished 4-for-4 with 2 RBI. With Michael Ratterree batting, opposing starter David Whitehead uncorked a wild pitch and plated Houle. Ratterree then drove in Pena with a sacrifice fly to left field.

 

The Threshers made it 6-5 with a run in the third and three runs in the fourth, but never truly threatened again.

 

Johnny Hellweg (2-5, 6.00 ERA) earned the win. In four innings, he surrendered five runs - two earned - on four hits, three walks and two hit by pitches. Hellweg fanned three.

 

Tristan Archer tossed four scoreless innings of relief. He allowed three hits and did not allow any free passes.

 

Preston Gainey tossed a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to notch his eighth save of the season.

 

The Manatees and Threshers will play the rubber match of the series tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. Javi Salas (7-8, 4.35 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. Clearwater will send RHP Victor Arano (4-11, 4.95 ERA) to the bump.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - On a night where Colorado Springs welcomed their 7 millionth fan through the gates, the Sky Sox set a home field strikeout record while rallying to a late 5-2 win over the Tacoma Rainiers before a crowd of 5,788 on Friday at Security Service Field.

 

Ariel Pena and Tyler Olson treated fans to quite the pitcher's duel as each held their opponent scoreless through five innings of work.

 

Pena would depart after dazzling over 5.1 frames. The right-hander allowed just four base hits while striking out a whopping 10 Rainiers hitters and walking none in his best Sky Sox performance to date.

 

Brandon Kintzler (1-1, 7.50) came on with one out and the bases empty in the sixth with Pena reaching his pitch count limit, retiring the frame's final two batters to maintain the scoreless tie.

 

Tacoma broke through for the game's first runs in the top of the seventh against Kintzler in his second inning of work. With two on and two-out in the frame, Patrick Brady singled on a soft groundball back to Kintzler who was unable to make the play in time at first when Matt Clark missed the catch. John Hicks and Leury Bonilla scored on the play to give the Rainiers a late 2-0 lead.

 

Colorado Springs' offense would finally break through in the home seventh against Olson and Rainiers reliever Logan Bawcom (2-3, 4.54). The Sox plated four runs on three hits, a walk and a sac fly. Juan Centeno's one-out RBI double scored the Sox first run before Matt Dominguez's two-run triple against Bawcom gave Colorado Springs their first lead of the night. Matt Long added an RBI sac fly to extend the Sox advantage to 4-2 by inning's end. Olson would be charged with two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings of work.

 

Jaye Chapman took over in the eighth to help the Sky Sox maintain their newly-acquired two-run lead. Chapman would strike out the side to do just that, giving Colorado Springs pitching a combined 15 strikeouts through eight innings of play. This was the first time a Sox staff has recorded 15 punchouts in a game since a 13-inning contest at home against the Iowa Cubs on April 26, 2014. The home record for strikeouts in a game was set at 16 on May 12, 1998; coincidentally against Iowa. Chapman would have his chance to help break that record in the ninth.

 

The Sox added the final run of the night on back-to-back doubles by Nevin Ashley and Clark in the eighth. Clark's 68th RBI of the season came off of lefty and former Brewers farmhand Lucas Luetge and extended Colorado Springs' lead to 5-2.

 

Chapman would slam the door in the ninth, striking out two in the frame to secure the 5-2 comeback win and set a new Sky Sox record for strikeouts in a home game. The record-setting 17th strikeout came courtesy of Rainiers infielder Ji-Man Choi to end the contest. The Sox improve to 53-73 with the exhilarating win as they drop Tacoma to 59-68 on the season.

 

The Sky Sox hope to make it two straight as they look to secure a series-clinching win in the final game of this four-game set with Tacoma. Colorado Springs sends Zach Davies to the mound (1-0, 4.50) against Rainiers righty Forest Snow (8-8, 3.91) with first pitch set for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) at Security Service Field.

Too little, too late for the minor league free agent to be? Pena already extended his Brewers association once by signing a minor league pact for this season.

My goodness, catcher Nevin Ashley, batting 3rd, had his 3rd consecutive three-hit game, now sports an amazing (and only partly PCL-fueled, although his home OPS is .967, road .767) stat line of .322/.389/.464 with an August OPS of 1.038. Yes, he just turned 31, but my goodness, and the Brewers need a big leaguer who looks like no-hit master Mike Fiers since the trade.

The Helena Brewers (5-16) took their series opener 8-1 over the Great Falls Voyagers (12-9) on Friday at Kindrick Field in Helena.

 

Helena put four runs on the board in the bottom of the first and never looked back, leading the whole way. Malik Collymore led off with a single in the first as part of a five-hit inning. Steven Karkenny and David Denson added in doubles to back up the RBI triple of Troy Stokes in the inning.

 

Evin Einhardt (5-2) was roughed up for the second time in as many starts against the Brewers. He went three-plus innings of work, giving up five runs on 10 hits. It was a new high for Einhardt in hits allowed. He would strike out four batters.

 

Jake Drossner (3-2, pictured above) made an outstanding start, throwing shutout baseball through five innings. He allowed two hits in the first inning and did not allow another hit the rest of his time on the hill.

 

The Voyagers broke through for their first and only run in the top of the seventh. Sikes Orvis hit a solo homer, his fourth homerun of the season, off Marcos Diplan.

 

Helena added two runs in both the fourth and seventh to run away with it.

 

Collymore, Karkenny, and Carlos Belonis led the Helena offense with three hits apiece.

 

The two teams will face off in the second game of their four-game series Saturday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).
