Fitting with Cy Sneed on the mound tonight that his wife Hannah has updated her blog.

By the way, with the Manatees in Clearwater and Brevard not providing their own audio of this game, it's a chance for you all to sample the work of the lone lead female broadcaster in affiliated ball, Kirsten Karbach.

Read all about her here and here.

Small sample alert, but it seems like maybe Adrian Houser likes pitching in front of the Biloxi defense? Lots of ground balls and Ks, and maybe knowing he has Arcia and Rivera back there has helped him cut down the walks? Just speculation based on three starts of course...

While is command wasn't there tonight, Hader continues to prove to me that he is a frontline guy and #2 pitcher in our system behind Lopez. He's hard to hit, his Ks have been increasing and he is still only 21 dominating AA!

Threshers Win Big over Manatees, 11-1

Numata Knocks in Four, Rios Shuts Down Brevard County in Opener

By Kirsten Karbach / Clearwater Threshers

08/20/2015 10:14 PM ET

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers exploded for ten runs across the sixth and seventh innings on Thursday, on their way to sinking the Brevard County Manatees, 11-1 at Bright House Field.

Chace Numata led the way with a four-RBI night, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Yacksel Rios meanwhile shut down the Manatees for six innings in the start, limiting Brevard County (22-30) to just three hits while striking out five.

The six innings for Rios (6-3) matched his longest of the season, with his other six-inning outing also coming against the Manatees back on July 4th. Rios tossed 80 pitches in the win, 52 for strikes.

Clearwater (34-20) grabbed the advantage in the second off Cy Sneed (3-3), after Rhys Hoskins rocketed a triple off the top of the wall in right-center. He would score with two outs on Numata's infield single.

It remained 1-0 until the sixth. With two men on and one out, Numata sent a single toward center that plated both Hoskins and Aaron Brown to make it 3-0. Mitch Walding followed with a single, his second of the night.

With runners at the corners, Walding took off for second and was caught stealing, but Numata broke for the plate and scored as the throw went to second base.

Up 4-0, Clearwater broke it wide open in the seventh.

Hoskins drove a two-out RBI double to left off reliever Stephen Peterson, and Andrew Pullin reached on an error on the shortstop Angel Ortega, his second of the inning. That miscue opened the floodgates, as the next five batters all collected hits off Peterson.

Jesmuel Valentin capped the scoring by shooting a triple just over the head of centerfielder Omar Garcia, scoring two runs to make it 11-0. All told, Clearwater brought across seven runs - one earned - on seven hits and three errors in the inning.

Clearwater has won four straight, and will battle Brevard County for game two of the series on Friday at 6:30 p.m. David Whitehead (7-10) toes the rubber against Johnny Hellweg (1-5), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 p.m.

Friday will also feature a Threshers Spirit Socks giveaway to the first 1,000 fans, presented by the Tampa Bay Times.

Brevard County Box Score

Ugly, ugly game. 3 walks by Cy Sneed, 2 errors by Angel Ortega, Dustin Houle threw behind a runner only to see him safe at second without a throw from Garrett Cooper, errant throw by Clint Coulter and Clint Coulter caught stealing. Stephen Peterson, who has been pretty reliable, gives up 7 hits in 2/3 of an inning. At least they got a run. Coulter with 2 hits.

Josh Hader dropped to 0-2 in his last two starts despite striking out 17 over 11 innings and one earned run allowed. (M.K. Krebs)

JACKSON, TN - The Biloxi Shuckers climbed back over .500 in the second half, but fell right back to even after splitting a doubleheader with the Jackson Generals at the Ballpark at Jackson on Thursday night. Starting pitching dominated both games for Biloxi as Adrian Houser and Josh Hader combined for 17 strikeouts and just one earned run allowed in 10 innings. The Shuckers dropped game one, 5-1 and the nightcap, 4-0.

The loss in game two also ended a four-game winning streak against Jackson, six-game winning streak in seven-inning contests and three-game win streak overall.

Game 1: Shuckers 5, Generals 1

Biloxi (26-25) jumped on the board early to kick off the doubleheader as Brett Phillips (RBI, R, 2 2B) started the game with the first of two doubles in game one. A single by Orlando Arcia moved Phillips to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Nathan Orf (1x2, RBI, R).

The Shuckers would retain the 1-0 edge until a two-out rally in the third by Jackson (16-35). After two fly outs to center started the inning for the Generals, Zach Shank singled to right and stole second. Tyler Smith walked, allowing Aderlin Rodriguez to single home Smith from second to tie the game at one apiece.

Biloxi did not take long to jump back out in front, putting up a four-spot in the top-half of the fourth. Orf and Nick Ramirez (1x3, R) started the route with back-to-back singles before Victor Roache (0x3) flew out to left for the first out of the inning. An error by third baseman Jordy Lara from Yadiel Rivera (0x2, R, BB) allowed Orf to score from second to give the Shuckers a 2-1 lead.

Tyrone Taylor (1x3, R) kept the line moving with a single to center, loading the bases for Taylor Green (1x3, RBI), who lined a single to right to bring home Ramirez. Parker Berberet (0x1, RBI, BB) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Rivera for a 4-1 lead, and Phillips added a RBI double to left to score Taylor and open up the Shuckers' advantage to four.

Adrian Houser (2-0) started game one for Biloxi back and struck out four consecutive batters for the final two outs in the first and first two in the second before allowing back-to- singles to Lara and Guillermo Pimentel, but nothing would come of that for Jackson.

The right-hander from Locust Grove, OK picked up his second consecutive victory by going five innings and allowing the one run on seven hits, a walk and six strikeouts. The free pass was the first Houser has issued as a member of the Biloxi Shuckers.

Jed Bradley worked the final two innings of the opener and did not allow a base runner, while picking up two strikeouts.

The victory in game one put the Shuckers above .500 for the first time since defeating the Tennessee Smokies, 6-4 in 11 innings, on July 10.

Game 2: Generals 4, Shuckers 0

Josh Hader (1-2) rolled through the first three innings of the nightcap, striking out five without allowing a hit. The southpaw's sixth strikeout started the fourth, but a passed ball on Adam Weisenburger (0x1, BB) allowed Marcus Littlewood to reach base safely. Aderlin Rodriguez then doubled to right-center, scoring Littlewood on the Generals' first hit of the game.

The 21-year-old struck out a season-high, and tied a career-high, with 10 in five innings. Deep counts cut the Maryland native's night short, as he needed 99 pitches to work through game two, while tying a season-high with four walks. In four starts with Biloxi, Hader has struck out 30 batters in 19.2 innings. Over his last two starts, he's 0-2, but allowed just one earned run over 11 innings, while striking out 17. The Shuckers have been shutout in both of the starts and 12 times over the season.

Jackson (17-35) opened up the game late with a three-run homerun by Jabari Henry off of Martin Viramontes (IP, 3 R, 3 H, 2 BB) to extend the Generals' lead to 4-0.

Biloxi (26-26) had another chance to plate an early run in the first after Orlando Arcia (1x2, 2B) doubled with one out. Nathan Orf followed with a single to right, but was thrown out at second. Arcia broke for home on the play and was thrown out at home for the final out of the inning.

At the end of the night, Biloxi sits 3.5 games behind Mobile and Pensacola, in fourth place in the South Division standings, with 17 games remaining.

The Shuckers will look to win their second straight series with a victory over the Generals on Friday night. Biloxi's RHP Tyler Wagner (9-5, 2.33) will try for a third consecutive start to reach double-digits in the win column for a third straight year. Jackson's RHP Edwin Diaz (3-10, 4.59) will look to avoid becoming the first pitcher in the Southern League to collect 11 losses. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to http://www.biloxishuckers.com.

Rattlers rally to beat River Bandits in ten innings

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Alan Sharkey had three hits and three RBI in Wisconsin's 7-4 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Thursday night. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored twice with two outs in the top of the ninth inning and three times with two outs in the top of the tenth inning to stun the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park on Thursday night. Wisconsin picked up a 7-4 win in extra innings over their Western Division rivals.

Wisconsin (41-80 overall, 18-33 second half) grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning. Elvis Rubio doubled with two outs. He went to third on an errant pickoff throw by Quad Cities starting pitcher Agapito Barrios. Barrios would strike out Tucker Neuhaus but the ball made it to the backstop for a wild pitch that allowed Rubio to score and Neuhaus to reach first.

The River Bandits (77-43, 32-20) answered in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Tanielu singled with two outs and moved to second when Rattlers starting pitcher Eric Hanhold walked Bryan Muniz. Then, Drew Ferguson singled to drive in Tanielu and the game was tied 1-1.

Quad Cities took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Ramon Laureano started the inning with a single and stole second. Kristian Trompiz doubled to left with one out to knock in Laureano with the go-ahead run. Bobby Boyd followed with a single to score Trompiz for a 3-1 lead.

Boyd made it 4-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Trompiz doubled with one out. Boyd doubled into the left field corner to send Trompiz home, but Boyd was out trying to stretch the hit into a triple,.

Agapito Barrios kept the Rattlers in check after the first inning and through the fifth, but in the sixth the Rattlers staged a rally against the Quad Cities starting pitcher. Rubio singled to start the frame and a botched double play opportunity allowed Neuhaus to reach. Francisco Castillo's sharp single to left didn't allow Rubio a chance to score, but the Rattlers had the bases loaded with no out.

Sthervin Matos was robbed of extra bases when his screaming liner down the third base line was snagged by Tanielu with a back-handed grab for the first out of the inning. That was the end of the night for Barrios.

Mitch Meyer greeted reliever Zach Davis with an infield single to score Rubio and the Rattlers were within two runs. But, Davis left the bases loaded by getting a popup and a force play at second to end the inning.

Natanael Mejia, who had two hits in the game, started the Wisconsin rally in the ninth with a one-out single. Omar Cotto pinch-ran for Mejia and would take second base on defensive indifference with two outs. Alan Sharkey lined a single to right-center to drive in Cotto and the Rattlers were within a run.

Blake Allemand, who was hitless in his first four at bats of the game, lined a double on the first pitch he saw in the ninth to drive in Sharkey with the tying run. Allemand also extended his current hitting streak to nine games with that clutch double.

The River Bandits had runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Scott Lieser escaped the inning. Bryan Muniz sent a grounder to short and Allemand's throw to the plate got the runner. Drew Ferguson grounded out to second and the game went to extra innings.

The game appeared as if it would go to the bottom of the tenth with the game still tied 4-4 as the first two Wisconsin hitters in the inning were retired.

Matos started the rally with an infield single and Meyer continued the rally by taking advantage of a defensive shift and dropping a bunt single. Greg McCall, who entered the game as the Timber Rattlers catcher in the bottom of the ninth, drew a walk to load the bases.

Luis Aviles gave the Rattlers the lead with an infield single. Sharkey gave Wisconsin breathing room with a sharp, two-run single to right and the Rattlers were up 7-4.

Lieser pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the tenth to close out the game.

Thursday night marked a pair of firsts for the Timber Rattlers. The win in Quad Cities was the first for Wisconsin at Modern Woodmen Park this season. They finish the season 1-8 at the home of the playoff-bound Bandits, Thursday was also the first time Wisconsin won a game that they trailed heading into the ninth inning. They had been 0-63 in that situation prior to Thursday night.

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip with the first game of a three-game series against the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park on Friday night. Cody Ponce (1-1, 1.29) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dewin Perez (2-4, 6.56) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:00pm.

The radio broadcast of Thursday's game is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. The broadcast is also available on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I needed this one as much as the T-Rats did, the 9th and 10th innings were just incredible, especially when Blake Allemand came up clutch in the 9th to tie the game. In the 10th 2 swinging bunt singles, a bunt against the shift, and a walk and suddenly the T-Rats had the lead without a ball leaving the infield. Alan Sharkey is like the Rattler version of Lyle Overbay... doesn't have average power, plays an even better 1B, and somehow always comes up clutch. Erickson emptied the bench to get to extras, Chris reminded the listening audience of that fact a couple of times. I mentioned this before but the Rattlers are running with 11 position players and 14 pitchers so Erickson only has 2 substitutions available.

Mehring mentioned earlier in the week that Eric Hanhold was going to be a stand alone starter but that didn't make sense given his performance thus far, or maybe I just heard it wrong? Devin Williams was sharp, which was nice to hear and Scott Lieser was pretty good as well to nail down the game.

The offense had a nice end of the game, check the boxscore for the multi-hit games!

Wisconsin Recap

So 1st and 3rd, bottom of the 9th, and 1 out. I couldn't decide if this was really dumb or really smart as the ball was seemed sharply hit and I would have thought turning 2 to end the inning would have been the play. Then it occurred to me that maybe this was the rule quirk and if the run had scored before the double play was completed the game would have ended anyway? In the end it didn't matter.

Quad Cities Bottom of the 9th

  • Defensive Substitution: Greg McCall replaces Omar Cotto, batting 8th, playing catcher.
Bobby Boyd grounds out, second baseman Tucker Neuhaus to first baseman Alan Sharkey.
Garrett Stubbs singles on a line drive to right fielder Sthervin Matos.
Nick Tanielu singles on a line drive to center fielder Francisco Castillo. Garrett Stubbs to 3rd.
Bryan Muniz reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Blake Allemand to catcher Greg McCall. Garrett Stubbs out at home. Nick Tanielu to 2nd.
Drew Ferguson grounds out, second baseman Tucker Neuhaus to first baseman Alan Sharkey.

DSL Yankees2 Top of the 6th

Defensive Substitution: Javier Castillo replaces second baseman Franly Mallen, batting 2nd, playing second base.

***

Perhaps another removal at the lower levels for lack of effort? Hard to speculate, perhaps Mallen tweaked something in the box or on his way to first base? But if not, then the Brewers have definitely established a new policy on this at the rookie levels this year, as we've learned of several examples.

With only two games left in the DSL season, if Mallen doesn't play, we can figure it was an injury of some sort.

Raptors bats explode for 13-8 win

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (4-16) lost their ninth game in 10 days on Thursday, falling 13-8 to the Ogden Raptors (12-8) at Lindquist Field in Utah.

Ogden scored 13 runs on 17 hits in the game, their hit tally would tie a season-high for opponents. It is the third time this season Helena has given up 17 hits in a game.

Alex Santana led the early surge for the Raptors, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and a triple in the game. He added in six RBI and two runs scored. The Raptors would score all 13 of their runs in the first five innings.

Drake Owenby (1-2) was roughed up in the start, giving up seven runs in two innings. It was just his third appearance since taking two weeks off due to fatigue.

Lefty Christian Trent also made his return from almost a month off of pitching. The Ole Miss alum threw just one inning of relief, giving up three runs on three hits.

The Brewers' offense woke up in the third when Jonathan Oquendo and Carlos Belonis hit back-to-back doubles to get the scoring started. Two runs scored in the inning on just those two hits.

Troy Stokes added to the tally with a three-run home run in the sixth, his fifth of the season. The Brewers scored six unanswered runs over the last four innings, but the deficit would be too great to overcome.

Helena had the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, but only one run would come in to score as Marcus Crescentini struck out Belonis to end the game.

The Brewers now return to Helena to host the Great Falls Voyagers in a four-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Helena Box Score

1B David Denson, SS Jake Gatewood, and 2B Jonathan Oquendo each reached base thrice, while LF Malik Collymore, CF Troy Stokes, DH Yerison Pena and RF Carlos Belonis each reached two times as the Brewers drew ten walks.

Somehow (pace of play rules), the game squeezed under three hours at 2:56.

Helena Game Log

RHP Jordan Yamamoto was relatively effective while soaking up four relief innings (six K's).

Tacoma Turns Tales On Sox In 10-5 Loss

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Sky Sox could not keep up their torrid offensive pace, dropping Thursday night’s 10-5 contest to the Tacoma Rainiers before a crowd of 5,515 at Security Service Field.

Sox starter Hiram Burgos (2-3, 3.50) tossed a scoreless first before allowing individual runs in each of the next three frames. Leury Bonilla’s second-inning RBI single, Jabari Blash’s solo blast in the third and Steve Baron’s run-scoring sac fly in the fourth accounted for the Tacoma damage against the right-hander. Blash’s homer was his second solo shot in as many nights and his 16th on the season. Burgos would depart after four innings of work, allowing those three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two.

His counterpart, former New York Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang (3-3, 4.78), looked to be in vintage form on the warm Colorado Springs evening. The right-handed sinker-baller surrendered three runs (just two earned) on seven hits while striking out five and walking none over seven impressive innings of work.

Jeremy Horst took over for the Sox in the Tacoma fifth with his team trailing 3-0. The left-hander would give up four hits and a free pass in the frame with Baron, Patrick Brady and Shawn O’Malley driving in runs on back-to-back RBI singles. The Rainiers doubled their lead by the time Horst retired Chris Taylor with the inning’s final out, holding a commanding 6-0 advantage they would maintain until the seventh.

Rob Wooten tossed a scoreless sixth before being taken deep for a solo home run by Brady with two out in the seventh. The infielder’s first career Triple-A home run extended the Rainiers lead to 7-0 heading to the home seventh.

Colorado Springs broke through for their only runs of the night in the that very next frame, scratching three across the plate against Wang on three singles and a couple of productive outs. Matt Clark, Michael Reed and Nevin Ashley loaded the bases with consecutive singles before Clark and Reed came around to score on a Juan Centeno RBI groundout and throwing error by Patrick Kivlehan. Matt Dominguez added an RBI groundout of his own to cut the Sky Sox deficit to 7-3 before Wang induced an inning-ending groundout off the bat of Pete Orr.

Tim Dillard would take the bump to start the Rainiers eighth, allowing four consecutive hits before recording an out. Stefan Romero’s RBI double pushed the first run of the frame across before Kivlehan represented Tacoma’s scoring with a run-scoring base knock. Dillard settled down to record three quick outs, ending the frame with the Rainiers now leading the Sky Sox 9-3.

Jim Henderson gave up the Rainiers’ final run on a Chris Taylor RBI single in the ninth before Clark cut the Sox deficit to 10-4 in the home ninth on his 18th long ball of the season. Orr added an RBI sac fly against the recently acquired Rainiers reliever Jose Ramirez. The right-hander struck out Kyle Wren to end the ballgame, securing Tacoma’s 10-5 win on Thursday night. The win improves Tacoma to 59-67 while the Sox drop to 52-73 on the season.

The Sox will look to avenge the tough loss with a win on Friday night. The Sox will send Ariel Pena (1-2, 4.68) to the mound against Tacoma lefty Edgar Olmos (1-1, 3.55) in game three of this four-game set with the Rainiers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM MDT at Security Service Field.

Colorado Springs Box Score

RHP Ariel Pena is currently on the Temp Inactive List, so the Sky Sox will continue their roster gyrations again before Friday's game.

Free Nevin Ashley! The catcher DH'd here, and went 3-for-4.

The top of the order (LF Kyle Wren, SS Luis Sardinas, and CF Domingo Santana) (yes, CF Domingo Santana, more on that in a bit), combined to go 0-for13 with four K's.

This was only Santana's 12th appearance in center field over 612 career games. He had appeared in one game there with Fresno earlier this season (two games in 2014, eight in 2013). Certainly this appearance lends credence to a likely Khris Davis - Santana - Ryan Braun alignment at times in the coming days.

Final: AZL White Sox 11, AZL Brewers 1

Maryvale Box Score

Pitching-wise, rehabbing LHP Brent Leach and RHP Caleb Smith fared well.

RHP Miguel Diaz, also rehabbing (elbow fracture) but remember, still yet to pitch above the Maryvale level, allowed five runs in the 3rd inning, although all five runs were unearned. The error belonged to Diaz, though.

The other six runs scored in the 8th inning against 33rd round RHP Connor Baits, making his 1st appearance since August 5th, and his 8th overall.

Baits could not complete the 8th, as he allowed two hits, walked three, hit a batter, and threw two wild pitches.

I used to think RHP Santo Manzanillo's rookie 2006 season in Maryvale was the standard for eye-popping numbers (13.22 ERA, 47 walks and ten wild pitches in 16.1 innings).

However, Baits, the UC-Santa Barbara product, is making his own case (46.06 ERA in 5.2 IP, 6.00 WHIP, 22 walks, 20 wild pitches).

Here's Baits' UCSB college player page, and you'll see his 2015 stats weren't exemplary, but didn't match his pro troubles.

So let's just remind Baits that not only did Manzanillo eventually reach AA, he was actually added to the Brewers' 40-man roster. Hang in there, Connor.

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 8th

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Gregory Munoz replaces Trent Clark.

Hopefully just some rest for Clark in the 8th inning of an 11-1 contest.

From Wed. 8/20's Link Report --

Huge game ball to 36th round RHP Jordan Desguin, who stranded three of starter Nash Walters' 2nd inning baserunners, and then followed up with four additional scoreless frames.

All falls into place for Desguin

Double play would indeed have ended the inning, regardless of the timing.

I look forward to watching the MiLB archive on the 9th and 10th inning heroics, unfortunately it'll be the River Bandits audio.
