From prior to the 2012 season:

 

Carlos Belonis signed for $550,000 and is considered the top signing. He'll probably get a chance at SS but his size may move him to an OF spot eventually, above-average runner.

 

Belonis missed nearly all his age 18 season with a broken thumb in 2013, but regardless, hasn't met hopeful expectations. But he's obviously just 21 today, and has shown a tempting combination of power and speed this summer.

Brevard County starter Brandon Woodruff struck out a career-high 10 Daytona Tortugas Tuesday night and the Manatees offense backed him up with 10 hits, leading to a 5-1 ‘Tees victory in front of 1,120 fans at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Woodruff (3-5) pitched 6.2 solid innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits and walking two. He threw 106 pitches. “I feel like the last few outings I’ve felt pretty good,” Woodruff said. “Just felt like the big thing tonight was establishing the fastball early on, so that helped me out a ton. It’s always good for a pitcher whenever early on the offense is going. You can settle down and just go out there and worry about throwing strikes and letting your defense play.”

 

Woodruff struck out at least one Daytona batter from the second inning on, including striking out the side in the sixth. “He did a good job,” said Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault of his pitcher. “He was aggressive with his fastball, got ahead and got some big outs when we needed him to. He had his change-up working pretty well tonight, too.”

 

The Tortugas finally got on the board in the fifth inning, which included a couple hits and a passed ball. Jeff Gelalich had an RBI single in the inning, making it a 5-1 game. Got a little shaky there,” said Woodruff. “I settled down and re-focused and was able to hit my spots… that was the main thing.”

 

Woodruff, who has made a couple appearances since returning from an oblique injury that landed him on the disabled list, said he felt pretty good. “I haven’t had any problems,” he said. Credit that to our trainer Tommy Craig. He’s done a really good job.”

Collymore the athlete is certainly well on his way to finishing the season strong, mid game his batting average is up to a .316 and an OPS in the .870's in slightly fewer PAs then he had for the Cards in the Appy league. All of his secondary numbers are at least solid. If he could still truly make it at second I'd be getting very intrigued, but at the least he's making an argument for making the top 30 prospects.

 

Micheal Reed also having a pretty good start to his game pushing his OPS well over .800 by the end of the night regardless of the rest of the evening.

River Bandits take game one from Rattlers

DAVENPORT, IA - Justin Ferrell tossed six shutout innings and the Quad Cities River Bandits held off a late charge by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers for a 3-2 victory in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

 

Wisconsin starting pitcher Angel Ventura retired the first two River Bandits batters he faced. He was ahead of Nick Tanielu 0-2, but the Quad Cities third baseman singled to right. Ventura walked the next two batters to load the bases. Then, he walked Bryan Muniz on four straight pitches to force in Tanielu for a 1-0 Quad Cities lead.

 

The River Bandits (76-42 overall, 31-19 second half) added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Bottger started the inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Jason Martin singled with center with one out and Bottger scored for a 2-0 advantage.

 

Ventura retired eight batters in a row starting with the final out in the bottom of the second, but left the game after allowing a one-out single to Bobby Boyd in the bottom of the fifth. Josh Uhen was summoned from the bullpen to replace Ventura. Boyd would steal second and take third on a passed ball. A walk to Tanielu put runners on the corners. Ramon Laureano followed with a single to center to drive in Boyd and the River Bandits were up 3-0.

 

The Timber Rattlers (40-79, 17-32) struggled to get anything going against Ferrell. The right-hander allowed three hits over his first five innings and all three hits came with two outs and none on base. But, things changed a bit in the sixth.

 

Blake Allemand extended his current hitting streak to seven games with a one out single. Tucker Neuhaus drew a walk and the Rattlers had runners at first and second. However, Ferrell got out of the inning with a flyout to left and a strikeout. He would leave the game after six shutout innings with eight strikeouts.

 

Wisconsin put together a rally against Angel Heredia in the top of the seventh. Elvis Rubio singled to start the frame and was the first Wisconsin leadoff batter to reach in the game. Natanael Mejia followed one out later with a double off the wall in left to put runners at second and third. Alan Sharkey drove in both runners with a two-out single and Wisconsin was within a run. But, Heredia got the final out for his eighth save of the season to close out game one.

I've mentioned that Angel Ventura, pretty much like every Latin pitcher who's been in WI this year, has a ton of moving parts in his delivery and as such his control will just suddenly disappear from time to time, today was no different. Those limited bouts where he loses control cost him dearly because he doesn't seem to make self corrections quickly on the mound and it's usually a crooked number in those innings. Today he limited the damage to 2 runs across the first 2 innings but the walks and pitch cost him all his runs when he was in the game.

 

At least the boys battled back in the 7th but it was too little too late. As highlighted above Blake Allemand's hot streak at the plate continues and Alan Sharkey (2-4) had a nice game and has been somewhat clutch over the last couple of months. Elvis Rubio (2-3) and Natanael Mejia (2-3,2B) also posted multi-hit efforts in game 1, though Mejia's PB ended up being the difference in the game.

 

Mehring didn't put this is in the game story but the Rattlers are 1-12 vs River Bandits this year.

Rodrigo Benoit tossed five scoreless innings as the Brewers rolled over the Yankees 11-2. Benoit earned the win, allowing just one hit. Joaquin De La Cruz followed Benoit and gave up two unearned runs in two innings of relief. Juan Diaz worked the final two frames without allowing a hit or a run. Jay Feliciano went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Nicol Valderrey reached base three times with a walk, single and double and Henry Correa also added a double for the Brewers. Quad Cities sweeps doubleheader from Wisconsin

River Bandits take game two 8-1

DAVENPORT, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-1 in the nightcap to earn a sweep of Wednesday's doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park. Bryan Muniz blew the game open with a three-run double in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

 

Wisconsin (40-80 overall, 17-33 second half) took the lead in the top of the first inning. Blake Allemand reached on a bunt single with one out. The hit extended Allemand's hitting streak to eight games. Tucker Neuhaus lined a double into the corner in right to score Allemand for a 1-0 advantage.

 

But, the Rattlers did not lead for long.

 

Quad Cities (77-42, 32-19) scored three runs on one hit against Wisconsin starter Kodi Medeiros in the bottom of the first. Drew Ferguson started the inning with a double and moved to third with one out on a wild pitch. Medeiros would walk Ramon Laureano and hit Bryan Muniz to load the bases before walking Jose Fernandez to force in Ferguson with the tying run. Ryan Bottger made it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Laureano and moved Muniz to third. Another wild pitch by Medeiros allowed Muniz to score and the River Bandits were up 3-1.

 

Medeiros walked Laureano again in the bottom of the third. Medeiros would leave after a stolen base by Laureano and a single by Muniz put runners at the corners. Luke Curtis took over and gave up a sacrifice fly to Fernandez that scored Laureano for a 4-1 lead.

 

Nathan Kirby took over in the bottom of the fourth inning and loaded the bases with one out on a single and two walks. Kirby would get a strikeout for the second out, but Muniz cracked a double to left-center to drive in all three runners and the River Bandits were up 7-1.

 

Dean Deetz, the starter for the River Bandits, allowed one run on four hits and struck out five over five innings to earn the win.

 

Quad Cities added one more run in the sixth inning. Kristian Trompiz reached on a dropped flyball to right. A single and a flyball to center put runners on the corners with one out. Laureano knocked in Trompiz from third with a fielder's choice.

 

Allemand had three of Wisconsin's six hits in the game and went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader. He is 14-for-32 during his hitting streak.

 

The Timber Rattlers are 1-13 in fourteen games against the River Bandits this season. They are 0-7 at Modern Woodmen Park in 2015. Quad Cities has outscored Wisconsin 75-25 this season.

 

The final game of the series is Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Eric Hanhold (0-3, 7.85) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Agapito Barrios (1-1, 1.06) is set to start for the River Bandits. Game time is 7:00pm.

So I've been trying to describe how Kodi Medeiros doesn't throw quality strikes for the majority of the season, that he does his work largely in the upper 3rd or out of the strike zone entirely. The more patient clubs have given Medeiros fits by taking pitches and forcing him to come over the plate. Quad Cities has been especially tough on him and it's no coincidence as they are one of the more disciplined line-ups in the league. I don't mean that specifically from a BB standpoint, though they do lead the league in BBs, I mean they are relatively polished and selective bunch. So when I talk about not being sure if Medeiros in his current state will play at the higher levels, that's what I'm talking about. He might get by at A+ but by AA the majority of the hacktastic scrubs have washed out already and you'd better be able to throw quality strikes because most hitters aren't going chase out of the zone if they don't think you can locate to begin with.

 

Nathan Kirby obviously wasn't sharp either, I talked about him prior to and after the draft in that I'm not sure what to make of his control issues because he doesn't have a glaring flaw as a pitcher. Hopefully all of the little kinks can get ironed out through instructs and spring training next year because like Medeiros he's got the stuff to be a top of the rotation type if he can get to the point of having average MLB control.

 

Blake Allemand has his issues as a SS, but my goodness has his bat come around, he's bounced from the low .200s all the way to .263 after today's double header. Small sample size and all that, though he's approaching 200 ABs in WI, but he's a nice little switch hitter and a .263 AVE is unfortunately a pretty big deal on this Rattler team.

Home runs carry Daytona to doubleheader sweep of Manatees

The Brevard County Manatees traveled to Daytona Wednesday night to complete the home-at-home series against the Tortugas, with a doubleheader consisting of two seven inning games. Daytona hit a home run in each game and went on to sweep the doubleheader, 4-0 and 3-0.

 

Daytona starter Amir Garrett was dominant on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout and earning his ninth win of the season. Garrett did not walk a batter and struck out six. On the other side, Wei-Chung Wang (9-5) got a complete game for the ‘Tees, but fell to 9-6 on the season. He walked one and struck out five. Daytona (32-19, 69-52 overall) got on the board early, scoring one in the top of the first against Wang. Carlton Daal singled to start the inning and came home one out later on a single by Phillip Ervin. The home team added to their lead in the fourth when Taylor Sparks tripled home Joe Hudson, who walked to lead off the inning.

 

Sparks dealt Wang a blow in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Hudson hit a one out double and Sparks followed with his 12th home run of the year, giving the Tortugas a 4-0 lead. Sparks went 3-for-3 with a triple and the home run. He had three RBI. Omar Garcia, Dustin Houle, Rafael Neda and Angel Ortega all had singles for the Manatees. Sparks was the only hitter on either side to have a multi-hit game.

Game two got off to a bit of a scary start. Manatees’ starter Zach Hirsch hit Daal with a pitch to start the game. The ball got Daal in the face and he was removed from the game after a lengthy delay. Wendell Soto entered the game to run for Daal and was moved to second on a Junior Arias single. After Ervin reached on an error to load the bases, Sparks hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. The sac fly turned into a double play, when Ervin was thrown out at second. Sebastian Elizalde’s RBI single scored Arias, to make it a 2-0 game.

 

Arias gave the Tortugas a 3-0 lead with his ninth home run of the season, in the top of the second. Ortega got the Manatees first hit against Tortugas starter Seth Varner, a double in the third inning. Garrett Cooper hit his 31st two-bagger of the season in the fourth. Brevard County came up empty in both frames.

 

Varner pitched five shutout innings of shutout ball for Daytona, allowing only the two hits. He walked one and struck out six. El'Hajj Muhammad came on to start the sixth for the Tortugas and gave up a single to Clint Coulter. One out later, Jose Pena hit a grounder that looked like it was going to result in an easy double play. Instead, Sparks throw to second was wild and Coulter got to third. That brought the tying run to the plate, but Paul Eshleman flied out to end the inning.

 

Hirsch, who pitched a complete game for the Manatees took the loss. He settled down after that shaky first inning, but didn’t get any help from the Brevard County offense. Hirsch gave up six hits, walked one and struck out four.

 

Brevard County (22-29, 51-69) will travel to Clearwater tomorrow to start a series against the Threshers. Cy Sneed (3-2, 2.60 ERA) will pitch against Threshers hurler Yacksel Rios (5-3, 3.03 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

7 hits in 14 innings for the night. Always tough to come back from the scary HBP but Hirsch settled down pretty well after that. Two complete games from the starters. At least they saved the bullpen.

The 2nd Wisconsin game is a bit disheartenening and interesting analysis above about the quality of Kodi's pitches....

 

Domingo Santana however makes me happy as he is up to .400 after the trade and is hitting around .470 with an equal 4/4 w/k ratio in last 10 games....that is amazing....if he did not have that awful introductory performance to mlb last year, he would be getting talked about as a top 30 milb player

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox duplicated their early offensive production from a night ago, plating nine runs over their first four frames en route to a 9-3 series-opening defeat of the Tacoma Rainiers before a crowd of 1,838 at Security Service Field on Wednesday night.

 

The Sox jumped out to an immediate 2-0 advantage against Tacoma starter Adrian Sampson (1-3, 6.56) on three first inning singles and a walk with Juan Centeno ultimately cashing in on a two-run single to center.

 

Colorado Springs starter Brent Suter (2-0, 2.95) tossed two scoreless frames before the Rainiers offense knotted the ballgame in the third on the strength of a John Hicks solo shot and a run-scoring double play off the bat of infielder Chris Taylor.

 

The Sky Sox would take the field for good in the very next frame, scoring three times off of Sampson to take a 5-2 lead after three innings of play. Two of the runs would score via fielding error in the third with Michael Reed collecting the only RBI on a one-out base knock.

 

Suter surrendered another solo blast; this time to outfielder Jabari Blash in the Tacoma fourth. Blash's 15th round-tripper of the season cut Tacoma's deficit to 5-3 heading into the home half of the inning.

 

The Sox would help themselves to a big four-run fourth to put Tacoma away for good. Colorado Springs would plate two on a one-out RBI double by Domingo Santana before Sampson and Rainiers manager Pat Listach were ejected by home plate umpire Alex Ortiz. Logan Kensing took over with a runner on second, getting Matt Clark to fly out before allowing back-to-back runs-scoring extra-base-hits to Reed and Centeno. Centeno's RBI triple gave the catcher three runs driven in on the night and the Sky Sox a 9-3 lead. In all, Sampson was tagged for eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and walk while striking out two over an abbreviated 3.1 inning performance.

 

Suter gave up the last of his four runs in the Tacoma sixth when Stefan Romero plated Taylor with a sacrifice flyout to Matt Long in left. The Sox southpaw would depart after seven innings, allowing the four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out two on his way to his second win in three starts since being called up to Colorado Springs.

 

The trio of J.C. Ramirez, Rob Rasmussen and Tony Zych combined to allow just four base runners over the game's final three innings to finish out the evening for the Rainiers bullpen.

 

Preston Guilmet tossed two perfect innings of relief to secure the Sky Sox series-opening 9-4 victory, helping improve his team to 52-72 while dropping Tacoma to 58-67 on the season.

 

Colorado Springs will look to make it two in a row as they play these same Tacoma Rainiers in game two of this current four game set on Thursday evening. Hiram Burgos (2-2, 3.28) leads the way against former Cy Young Award runner-up Chien-Ming Wang (2-3, 5.14) with first pitch set for 6:35 PM MDT (7:35 Central) from Security Service Field.

Fast-pitching Brent Suter, Colorado Springs Sky Sox top Tacoma Rainiers in 9-4 rout

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — If Major League Baseball is looking to pick up the pace of play, it should consider hiring a team of scientists to clone Colorado Springs starting pitcher Brent Suter.

 

Working at a rapid rate not seen in these parts since Rusty Meacham graced the Pacific Coast League in the late 1990s, Suter quick-pitched his way through seven strong innings and his Sky Sox beat the Rainiers on Wednesday night, 9-4.

 

Suter (2-0) barely wasted a moment between pitches. As soon as he received the ball back from catcher Juan Centeno, he was into his motion with the next delivery.

 

“It was throwing our timing off,” said Tacoma hitting coach Cory Snyder, who acted as manager after Pat Listach was ejected. “Our guys kept trying to call time with the umpire, but he wouldn’t give it to them, so they had to keep stepping in and stepping out. A lot of guys came in the dugout and said they got rushed.”

 

Suter allowed six hits and four runs through seven innings. That’s not a bad result at high-elevation Security Service Field, which sits roughly 6,500 feet above sea level.

 

It was Suter’s third Triple-A start, and his first at home for Colorado Springs.

 

Tacoma did manage two home runs, with John Hicks and Jabari Blash each hitting solo shots. Blash’s homer was his 13th in 33 games since the All-Star break.

 

Rainiers starting pitcher Adrian Sampson (1-3) was charged with eight runs (six earned) in 3 1/3 innings. Sampson’s day ended early in the fourth inning when he was ejected by home plate umpire Alex Ortiz, presumably for arguing about balls and strikes after Domingo Santana hit a two-run double. Listach was tossed at the same time.

 

Sampson’s defense let him down in the third inning. Second baseman Shawn O’Malley and shortstop Chris Taylor each made errors, leading to a pair of unearned runs as the Sky Sox took a 5-2 lead.

 

“We didn’t look like we were ready to play today,” Snyder said. “We came out flat and just kind of stayed that way all game.”

 

Reliever Rob Rasmussen made his Tacoma debut after being optioned by Seattle on Monday. He pitched a perfect eighth inning.

Cuas homers, but Brewers fall

The Helena Brewers (4-15) dropped a 4-2 contest on Wednesday to the Ogden Raptors (11-8) at Lindquist Field in Utah. It was Helena's eighth loss in nine games.

 

J.B Kole (0-4) got the start for the Brewers, pitching five innings of three-run baseball. He gave up three hits while walking a season-high five batters.

 

Ogden jumped out to an early lead scoring two in the top of the first. Scott De Jong and Matt Jones each had doubles in the inning, and Ogden's first three hits would all be for extra bases.

 

Kevin Brown threw three shutout innings for Ogden, but went home with no decision in just his second start of professional baseball. He struck out two and allowed two hits.

 

Six pitchers were rolled out for the Raptors on Wednesday, with none throwing more than two innings in relief.

 

Helena got their scoring started in the sixth when Jose Cuas collected his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to the opposite field. He is now tied for the team lead in round-trippers with Steven Karkenny.

 

Carlos Belonis put together a good night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

 

Helena had the bases loaded twice in the game with just one out, and the Brewers were unable to convert a run in either spot.

 

The Brewers and Raptors will face off in the finale of their four-game series Thursday at Lindquist Field in Ogden. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).
