uecker reveals his attitude toward braun?

djoctagone

i heard bob uecker's call of ryan braun's franchise record 252nd home run. while he gave his usual excited call of the shot, he seemed to downplay the significance of the milestone.

could uecker be disappointed that the record set by his good friend, robin yount, was broken by a player who was suspended by mlb for violations of the joint drug prevention and treatment program?

now that they're in the top of the subsequent inning, there's been no further discussion on the matter.

I didn't see or hear today's but I did watch the tieing one a few days ago. TV seemed to hype it a little and then did some follow up the next pregame. But really I don't think it's that huge a deal because it's such a low number. I'm not disagreeing with you or anything because I didn't hear Bob today but I'm just saying I don't think any of us really care that much and wouldn't have even if he was without the scandal. Things like 500th HR or 3000 hits would be a bigger deal but I don't think he's getting those after basically missing two of his prime seasons and with offense going down in general.

I wasn't able to listen earlier this afternoon, but I know Uke had been dealing with some voice issues. He sounded, frankly, terrible when I heard him on the radio Sunday. That could be more of a part of him sounding muted in his excitement than any possible ill feelings towards Braun.

Listening to yesterdays game I questioned why was doing the game because his voice sounded bad still. I have to imagine that is part of it at least.

Or quite frankly he just doesn't care about it in general? I personally could care less if he just broke the franchise HR record. Because in the grand scheme of things there is nothing great about what he did...the amount of players to hit that many is very long.

That pretty sums up how I feel about it. Where does he rank all-time, top 200 even?

Everything said above plus I REALLY don't think that, after all this time, Uke would all of a sudden start acting all cold to Braun on the air, even if he hated him (which I'm sure he doesn't).

They have the audio of both TV and Radio call on brewers.com ... I just watched it on the MLB at bat app - the call sounds fine to me

Same. I didn't think there was anything out of the ordinary with Bob's call. Within the context of the franchise, it is a big deal, because nobody has ever hit 252 before. That's a nod to the fact that we are a small market team, and usually when we have a true superstar that could hit 200 + home runs, we lose them to one of the big boys. Yount happened to play in a different era where players still stayed with one franchise. Within the bigger scheme of things, the history of the game, 252 isn't that big of a deal. But Braun is 31, and clearly his power hasn't diminished one iota. The thumb might affect how consistently he can turn on some balls, but when he makes clean contact, he hits the ball a really, really long way.

Think about it. As bad as this team is, and even with the thumb issues, Braun is on a pace to hit about 30 home runs, drive in 100 runs, and steal 25 bases. You can say what you want about the mistake he made. But Brauny goes out there every day and plays hard. Our offense might be really sad right now, but seeing him at bat, it's clear he's not going to slack off because we're out of contention. That's a true professional.

When TV did a little montage of his big HRs over the years it kind of reminded how perfect his swing is, probably prettiest RH swing in recent baseball. I know Pujols is a better hitter but his swing is ugly. I suppose Trout is probably up there now too. For some reason it seems over the years there's been tons of lefties with those picturesque strokes but not so many righties.

Over the years I never recalled Bob having any ill will towards Braun, seemed to always speak good of him, heck really everyone has, even after the scandal. Other than the initial I can't believe he lied type of reactions. I just mean over the years I've never heard anything about him being a jerk behind the scenes or anything like you do other guys and Bob has given that impression too. However, I'm usually a TV guy the last few years so I only listen to the radio when driving so I don't hear him a ton anymore like I used too.

Another thing that is remarkable is outside of maybe Lind Braun is the only real power hitter left on this club so for him to still be putting up numbers like this says a lot about him. I'm pretty confident he is clean right now too. I don't doubt now he gets tested a lot.

I think the really big context that is missing here is it's in the middle of a really really crappy season. It's just hard to be excited about things when your team sucks pretty bad. I suspect this might have been a bigger deal for Braun, the club, Bob, the fans, etc, etc if the Brewers had something to play for at this point.

Had the Brewer game on the radio recently. Uecker's voice was so bad I had to turn it off. How can they let him call games like that?

I have no idea... I mean I know he's old and all, and respect blahblahblah, but come on, its PAINFUL to listen to. Like, I can hear the pain in his voice as he tries to talk. I'd say he's basically got a week off, but since they're going to cleveland, I bet he calls those games. He needs some rest. and honey.
