A hometown paper update --

 

RHP Tristan Archer (Sullivan South) has allowed just one run over the course of his last four outings for the Brevard County Manatees, the High-Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

 

Archer cites some recent work with pitching coach David Chavarria on his mechanics as a reason for the success.

 

“I had a bullpen session a few weeks ago and [Chavarria] helped me get back to my normal arm slot, and when I found that, I feel that my command got better and my slider was better,” Archer said. “With the command I feel that I have been able to get ahead of hitters a lot more than I had been previously, and with the slider I have been able to put guys away or create weak contact early.”

 

For the season, Archer is 2-4 with one save and a 4.05 ERA in 25 appearances.

The Brewers scored six runs on six hits but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Pirates 9-6. Junior Flores, who had struggled in his last few starts, went five innings, allowing just one run on two hits. 22-year-old former Cardinal Isaac Silva followed Flores on the mound and took the loss after allowing three runs while retiring only one batter. Jesus Brea worked two innings, allowing five runs. Right fielder Jay Feliciano went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Third baseman Henry Correa added two hits in four at bats and left fielder Bryan Torres singled and drew a pair of walks.

Rattlers and River Bandits rained out in Davenport

JACKSON, TN - Jorge Lopez held the Jackson Generals hitless though 6.1 innings on Tuesday night, but Jackson's Aderlin Rodriguez ended the no-hit bid with a bloop single to right ending the bid. Lopez settled for his league-leading 12th win of the season in a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night at the Ballpark at Jackson. The win gets the Biloxi Shuckers back to .500 in the second half.

 

Lopez now holds the longest no-hit start for the Shuckers this season, surpassing Tyler Wagner's 5.1 innings on May 2 against the Mobile BayBears. The 22-year-old pitcher continues to make it look easy on the mound, shutting out opposing teams over his last two starts, spanning over 17.1 innings dating back to Aug. 7 against the Mississippi Braves. Tuesday's outing was his 14th quality start and sixth-straight. He's one behind Wagner, who has 15. The starting rotation has six quality starts in the last seven games.

 

Biloxi (25-25) broke through on the scoreboard in the eighth after squandering opportunities throughout the game.

 

After stranding runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and seventh innings, the Shuckers got the big hit from Brett Phillips (1x4, RBI, R) in the eighth with Tyrone Taylor (1x4, R, 2B) at second on a grounder up the middle to bring in the first run of the game. Orlando Arcia (2x4, RBI, 2B) followed with a single right, plating Adam Weisenburger (0x2, R, BB) for a 2-0 lead, with Phillips advancing to third on the play. Nathan Orf (1x4, RBI) bounced a comebacker to the mound, but a high throw to second allowed Arcia to slide in safely with Arcia scoring on the play to give the Shuckers a 3-0 advantage.

 

Arcia's two hits gave him his 41st multi-hit game of the season, and 28th two-hit game of 2015.

 

Jackson (16-34) starter Misael Siverio was equally as impressive for the Generals, striking out seven in six innings, while allowing only three hits and walking one. Trey Cochran-Gill (4-2) suffered the loss, surrendering all three runs in the eighth.

 

The Shuckers will look to jump out to a two-game lead on Wednesday night. LHP Adrian Houser (1-0, 3.18) takes the mound for Biloxi, while Jackson will send out RHP Dylan Unsworth (2-5, 5.24). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Woodruff Fans Career-High 10 in 5-1 Win

Viera, FL - Brandon Woodruff dominated into the seventh inning as the Brevard County Manatees (22-27, 51-67 overall) defeated the Daytona Tortugas (30-19, 67-52 overall) 5-1 on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Woodruff (3-5, 3.75 ERA) struck out a career-high 10 and surrendered just one unearned run over 6.2 innings to earn the win. He allowed five hits and two walks.

 

The Manatees scored early and often in support of Woodruff. The leadoff batter, Omar Garcia, was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first. Chris McFarland then singled to right field and moved Garcia over to third. Clint Coulter drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center. After back-to-back walks to Garrett Cooper and Taylor Brennan, Dustin Houle lifted a sac fly to center field.

 

In the bottom of the second, Jose Pena reached on a fielding error by Taylor Sparks with no outs. After a Steven Halcomb single, Garcia successfully sacrificed the runners to second and third. McFarland drilled a two-run single to left that scored both Pena and Halcomb. After a walk to Coulter, Daytona removed starting pitcher Nick Routt. Cooper greeted reliever Scott Brattvet with an RBI single to left-center and made it 5-0, Manatees.

 

Jeff Gelalich got the Tortugas on the board with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning.

 

Trevor Seidenberger threw 1.2 hitless relief innings and gave way to Preston Gainey with two on and one out in the ninth. Gainey induced a game-ending double play off of the bat of Junior Arias to record his seventh save of the season.

 

Routt (5-3, 3.56 ERA) was hit with the loss. He gave up five runs - four earned - on three hits and three walks in 1.1 innings.

 

Brevard County and Daytona will wrap up the series with a doubleheader tomorrow night in Daytona Beach. LHP Wei Chung Wang (9-4, 3.72 ERA) and LHP Amir Garrett (8-6, 2.52 ERA) will toe the rubber for game one. LHP Zach Hirsch (1-2, 5.09 ERA) will get the ball for the Manatees in game two. The Tortugas will send LHP Seth Varner (1-4, 4.32 ERA) to the hill in the second game. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Trevor Seidenberger was virtually unhittable early in the year but has struggled with control issues since he was promoted to Biloxi. Here he walked 3 in 1.2 innings although not giving up any runs. Preston Gainey finished out.

 

Garrett Cooper led the offense with 3 singles and a walk raising his batting average to .299. Clint Coulter was 2 for 2 with 2 walks and a sacrifice fly. Chris McFarland added two hits and Omar Garcia stole his 48th base.

People made excuses for him when he was catching but that wasn't an issue last year when he didn't even catch half the games in the season.

 

His power numbers have declined nearly every month, 11 XBH in April, 9 in May, 9 in June, 8 in July, and so far in August he has 6. That's nearly the same exact pattern as last year, only his valley was much deeper in 2015 than it was in 2014. His slash lines splits are terrible except for the overall season, and while I'll take a .722 OPS from a young middle infielder, I won't take that from a RF. He's still a mistake hitter and as soon as teams learn to just stay away from him, well he struggles, and the pitching is only going to continue to get better...

 

He'll be dropping significantly for me the next time we do a list, if he doesn't start to make significant adjustments to his swing and approach(it appeared he had the way he started the season) then he'll stall out and never get out of AA, maybe he won't reach AA period.

It is worrisome that Clint Coulter seems to go long periods with lesser hitting. Let's not get crazy though - it is still the FSL. Let's looks at Victor Roache splits:

So his hitting exactly parallels Coulter's except for the jail break to Biloxi. I think part of it is that weather conditions in April were conducive to hitting before the hot, humid conditions set in.

 

In comparison to the league, Clint is 2nd in HRs (1 behind the leader), 4th in doubles, 2nd in total bases, 11th in walks and 4th in slugging. He is still having a decent year relative to the league.

So how many fans realize the Brewers have the player with the Florida State League's second-best OPS?

 

24-year-old 1B Garrett Cooper only trails 22-year-old Reds' stud 2014 1st round Stanford SS Alex Blandino, who was promoted to AA two weeks ago.

 

As WVBrew has pointed out often here, just a fantastic season for Cooper, who would be looking at an Organizational Player of the Year Award if not for somebody named Arcia in Biloxi.

Shuckers' Lopez goes seven one-hit frames

Brewers No. 9 prospect takes no-no into final inning, strikes out nine

Even at this point in the season, Jorge Lopez is still finding ways to surprise his manager.

 

"Every time he goes out, it's 'There's Jorge, doing something,'" Carlos Subero said. "I think every outing Jorge seems to take a step forward."

 

Lopez held Jackson hitless for 6 1/3 innings and wound up allowing one hit over seven while piling up nine strikeouts in Double-A Biloxi's 3-1 win at Jackson on Tuesday.

 

"I just attacked the guys with my pitches, and the players we have played tremendously," the Brewers' No. 9 prospect said. "All three of my pitches were in the zone. My curveball was really good tonight. I could throw it for strikes and get strikeouts or ground balls. And my fastball command was there, so everything was coming off that."

 

The 2011 second-round pick had fanned nine twice before -- on July 2 this year and on Aug. 10, 2012 in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. He's 12-5 to lead the Southern League in wins while ranking second with a 2.32 ERA and 128 strikeouts.

 

"It's great to see him turn from a kid to a man in terms of pitching," Subero said. "Talent-wise, it's always been there. When he got here in April, my thought was that it would take him a year or a year and a half, following the pattern of talented kids I've had before.

 

"Tonight, he walks a guy on four pitches. The next batter, he goes 3-2 and he throws a curveball and strikes him out. He wouldn't have been able to do that in April, but he's learned to trust in his stuff. Today, he didn't have his best command, but he still managed to take it -- no hits, no runs -- into the seventh."

 

It's the second time this season Lopez has taken a no-hitter past the fifth, having worked a gem on May 10.

 

"It was Mississippi, it was pretty much the same [as tonight]," Lopez said. "I had my command with my fastball and I threw off-speed pitches. I could see those guys wanted to hack at the fastball, so I was making sure to throw the off-speed pitches for strikes and get guys swinging."

 

With Tuesday's outing, he extended his scoreless streak to 17 1/3 innings, dating back to his Aug. 7 loss to the M-Braves.

 

Lopez, who threw 53 of 93 pitches for strikes, began his night by walking leadoff man Ian Miller, who moved up on Tyler Bortnick's sacrifice. The 22-year-old right-hander took a moment to reflect on his approach.

 

"Every pitch I throw, I want to throw with really good conviction," he said. "That's the thing I've been grinding about. I wanted to try to make those guys swing."

 

A strikeout and a groundout later, Lopez was out of trouble. The Caguas Military Academy product also walked the leadoff man in the fourth, fifth and sixth but shrugged it off each time. In the middle innings, he realized he was having a special night.

 

"I just kept pitching like I wanted to throw a no-hitter," he said. "We have our really good defense, so I wanted to throw my pitches and if they make contact, let whatever happen."

 

 

The Biloxi defense turned a nifty double play on a ball off Miller's bat to erase Jabari Henry's walk in the sixth.

 

 

"They saved me with that really good double play," Lopez said.

 

Lopez fielded a Tyler Smith comebacker to start the seventh, but Aderlin Rodriguez dropped a 1-1 pitch into shallow right field. He was thrown out trying for a double, but the no-hitter was over.

 

 

"I was happy about my start," Lopez said. "I threw my fastball down and away [to Rodriguez] and he broke his bat, too, so I was like, 'Well, that happened, let's get going to throw with the same conviction and tempo.'"

 

He worked a perfect seventh and was done when Biloxi sent eight men to the plate in the top of the eighth.

 

Orlando Arcia, Milwaukee's top prospect and MLB.com's No. 13 overall, was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base for the Shuckers.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox scored early and often but would not be able to match Reno's offensive firepower in Tuesday night's 17-11 loss to the Aces before a crowd of 4,847 at Security Service Field.

 

Colorado Springs would score the contest's first runs thanks to a two-run blast off the bat of Domingo Santana. The one-out round-tripper was Santana's 18th of the season and second since joining the Sky Sox following the July 31st MLB non-waiver trade deadline. The Sox early 2-0 lead did not last long as the Aces offense turned it on in the following frame.

 

Josh Roenicke (6-10, 6.20) worked a scoreless first before being tagged for eight runs in the second. The right-hander recorded just two outs in the frame before the Sox turned to right-hander Austin Ross to get the final out. Roenicke gave up seven total hits and walked three without recording a strikeout in the abbreviated outing. The big blows would come on Brandon Drury's lead off home run, a bases-clearing double by first baseman Nick Evans and a Peter O'Brien three-run blast. Evans and O'Brien combined for six RBI's in the frame to help Reno take an 8-2 lead after an inning and a half of play.

 

The Sox responded to Reno's monster inning with another pair of runs in the home second to cut the early deficit to 8-4 after just two innings of play. The Sky Sox benefitted from a fielding error by third baseman Jamie Romak in the frame, putting runners on first and second with no out against Aces starter Caleb Clay before Ross moved the runners up 90 feet with a sac bunt. Kyle Wren followed Ross with an RBI groundout before Luis Sardinas cashed in with a two-out RBI single.

 

Danny Dorn and O'Brien each drove in a run against Ross in the top of the third to extend Reno's lead to 10-4 before the Sox offense answered with yet another pair of runs in the home half of the inning. Nevin Ashley singled home Michael Reed and advanced to third on O'Brien's second fielding error of the inning before Pete Orr capitalized with an RBI sac fly. The Sox third straight two-run frame cut the home team's deficit to 10-6 after three explosive innings.

 

Unfortunately for Ross and the Sox, Reno's lineup would not show signs of slowing down in the fourth, plating two more runs on three hits (two extra-base knocks) against the right-hander. Jordan Pacheco's one-out triple set up Mike Freeman and Dorn to extend the Aces lead. Freeman came through with a two-out RBI single before Dorn capped the frame with a run-scoring double. The now 12-6 lead would last for just one more out as Colorado Springs had a few more runs in them yet.

 

The Sox put a three spot up in the fourth, chasing Clay before the Reno righty could record an out in the frame. Wren's leadoff double set Sardinas up for his RBI single in the following at-bat before Santana drew a walk against newly-implanted Aces reliever R.J. Hively. Matt Clark added an RBI sac fly to plate Sardinas before Ashley capped the frame with a two-out RBI single. The three-run fourth pulled Colorado Springs within three, now trailing 12-9 halfway through.

 

The sides held one another scoreless over the fifth and sixth innings as Reno right-hander Seth Simmons (3-2, 3.45) and Sky Sox southpaw Mike Strong each made impressive scoreless appearances in a night that clearly favored the hitter.

 

Brandon Kintzler would be tagged for three runs in the seventh on four singles with RBI's coming from Pacheco and Dorn. Dorn added a two-out, two-run shot against Jaye Chapman in the Aces ninth to cap Reno's offensive outburst at 17 runs on the night. Dorn would end up going 4-for-6 with three runs scored and five RBI's in the contest to lead the way for Reno.

 

Kevin Munson tossed two scoreless innings of relief before turning the ball over to right-hander Kevin Vance in the ninth with the Aces leading 17-9. Colorado Springs would collect three hits and a walk in the frame against the Reno reliever, scoring twice on an Ashley RBI double and Orr RBI single before an out was recorded. Vance settled down however, getting Matt Dominguez to lineout before inducing a game-ending double play off the bat of Robinzon Diaz to secure Reno's big 17-11 win. The Aces improve to 60-63 after taking three of four from the Sky Sox who fall to 51-72 on the season.

 

The Sky Sox will look to erase this current three-game skid with a win in their series-opener with the Tacoma Rainiers on Wednesday evening. Left-hander Brent Suter (1-0, 2.38) will make his home field debut to begin the four-game set against right-hander Adrian Sampson (1-2, 4.95) with first pitch set for 6:35 PM MDT (7:35 Central) from Security Service Field.

I'm now at the point where I'll really be ticked if they don't reward catcher Nevin Ashley with a big league September. The new GM could always attempt to clear him off the 40-man after the season.

Brewers end losing streak

The Helena Brewers (4-14) snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 13-7 victory over the Ogden Raptors on Tuesday at Lindquist Field in Utah.

 

Ivan Vieitez (1-3) would not make it out of the first inning for the Raptors, giving up three runs on four hits before being pulled with two outs. It was a far different outing from the first time Helena would face him, as Vieitez threw five shutout innings at Kindrick Field just a week ago.

 

The Brewers collected 17 hits in the game, 13 of which were for extra bases. Both were new season-highs for the team.

 

Malik Collymore and Jake Gatewood each came up a home run shy of the cycle. Collymore would triple in the first on his way to a 3-for-4 night and Gatewood would go 3-for-6. Neither had a triple this season before Tuesday.

 

The Brewers collected 12 of their 13 runs in multiple-run innings, peaking with four runs in the top of the seventh.

 

The Raptors put five pitchers on the hill. All of them would give up runs.

 

Carlos Belonis cranked a three-run homer in the ninth to extend the Brewers lead back to six runs. It was his fifth of the year.

 

Helena and Ogden will face off in the third game of their four-game series Wednesday at Lindquist Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).
