After a five game winning streak, the Brewers dropped their second in a row on Monday, losing to the Pirates 7-3. Nattino Diplan started and was charged with the loss after giving up five runs over four innings of work. Yan De La Cruz followed and gave up two runs in his two innings of work. 17-year-old Panamanian righty Deymar Alvarado tossed two scoreless innings of relief and Yunior Santana worked a 1-2-3 ninth innning.

 

Outfielder Bryan Torres led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a triple. Right fielder Jay Feliciano, designated hitter Bismar Nunez and catcher Dilson Fernandez each had two hits with first baseman Nicol Valderrey adding a triple in three at bats.

Power Surge Supports Ortega Shutout in Game One Triumph

Daytona Beach, FL - Buoyed by another stellar performance from Jorge Ortega, the Brevard County Manatees (21-27, 50-67 overall) took Game One of their doubleheader with the Daytona Tortugas (30-18, 67-51 overall) on Monday night, 3-0.

 

Daytona's best chance to score came with runners at the corners and one out in the bottom of the third. As Brian O'Grady went to steal second, Rafael Neda looked the runner back at third before throwing to second. Steven Halcomb stepped in front of the bag to cut off the throw and went home in time for Neda to apply the tag on Ronald Bueno and keep the 'Tugas off of the board.

 

The Manatee breakthrough came in the top of the fifth against Tortugas starting pitcher Jackson Stephens with Taylor Brennan leading off the frame with a base hit to center. After Dustin Houle and Neda flew out, Brennan stole second with Michael Ratterree. He would draw a walk after fouling off several pitches to keep the inning alive for Halcomb. With two strikes in the count, Halcomb ripped a double off of the wall in left to bring home Brennan for the first run of the game.

Insurance would come the following inning when Clint Coulter launched a one-out solo home run to left, his 12th of the season, to double the lead. On the next pitch, Garrett Cooper clubbed a home run to left center for his seventh of the season and cap the scoring.

 

Ortega gave up just four hits in seven innings of work, striking out a season-high seven and walking none to record his fifth complete game of the season, which ties a Manatee single-season record, and his second shutout.

 

Neda had two of Brevard County's six hits, the only multi-hit game in the lineup. He recorded his tenth double of the season in doing so.

Jorge Ortega's ERA down to 2.48 and leads the Florida State League in that category for starting pitchers. Clint Coulter is 2nd in HRs to Ericson Leonora of the Tampa Yankees. Garrett Cooper is 2nd in slugging to Alex Blandino.

Raptors win series opener 7-2

The Helena Brewers (3-14) lost their seventh straight game on Monday, falling 7-2 to the Ogden Raptors (10-7) at Lindquist Field in Utah.

 

The Brewers would take a brief lead to start the game, leading 2-0 after three innings.

 

Jose Cuas hit a solo homer in the top of the first, a 397 foot blast that put him in a tie for second on the team in round-trippers. He and Jake Gatewood now each have six.

 

Steven Karkenny, the team leader in homers at seven, added to the lead with an RBI double off Chris Powell in the third to score Jonathan Oquendo. Powell, making his first professional start, gave up two runs in three innings of work on four hits. He would strike out four and walk one.

 

Joshua Torres (2-3) threw three solid innings in his start before the wheels fell off in the last three. He gave up four runs on six hits in his last three frames on the hill after throwing shutout baseball on two hits in the first three.

 

Three Ogden relievers collaborated for shutout baseball following Powell. Hector Rodriguez (2-0) earned the win on three shutout innings of relief.

 

Ogden scored their first run of the ballgame in the fourth on an RBI triple from Matt Jones that allowed Jordan Tarsovich to cross the plate. They would proceed to score in four consecutive innings.

 

Jones led the Raptors' offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and three RBI.

 

Alex Farina pitched two innings of relief for Helena, struggling to find outs in the seventh. He would allow the first four batters he saw to reach, walking two and giving up two hits. Jones would work in his double with the bases loaded.

 

The Brewers and Raptors will face off in the second game of their four-game series Tuesday at Lindquist Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).

From the Raptors' Game Summary --

 

Alex Santana added another run to the tally in the bottom of the sixth inning on one of the most bizarre plays of the season. Santana popped up a 1-0 pitch just beyond the infield dirt on the third base side. Jose Cuas, the third baseman, tracked the ball the entire time, but shortstop Jake Gatewood came on the scene at the last second. Cuas and Gatewood looked at each other as the ball fell innocently to the grass. Cuas quickly picked up the ball and fired it to second base as Santana arrived. The throw was off to the right of Jonathan Oquendo and rolled all the way into the Helena bullpen, allowing Santana to score. The play was officially ruled a double and an error.

Aces Double Down, Sweep Sox In Twin Bill

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - After holding early leads in both games of Monday's doubleheader, the Sky Sox would drop 3-2 and 7-3 contests to the Reno Aces before a matinee crowd of 1,743 at Security Service Field.

 

The two sides held each other scoreless through the first four innings of play in game one. Colorado Springs would draw first blood, scoring twice in the home fifth against Reno starter Aaron Blair (6-1, 3.33) to take the day's first lead. The runs would come after the right-hander got two quick outs in the frame as five consecutive Sox reached base safely before the final out was recorded. An RBI single by Luis Sardinas and run-scoring double by Domingo Santana did the damage for Colorado Springs.

Sox starter Zach Davies tossed five shutout frames before surrendering two runs in the sixth to allow Reno to tie it late. Like Blair, Davies would get two quick outs before the Aces rallied. The recently acquired righty gave up two walks and two singles in the inning with Gerald Laird's two-run knock serving as the biggest blow. Davies got the final out of the frame and would be replaced by Jeremy Horst in the seventh. Davies allowed just the two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over six strong innings of work.

 

Blair would also finish the sixth before being replaced in the seventh. He matched Davies' two-run evening, giving up seven hits and two free passes while striking out four along the way.

 

Preston Guilmet (2-1, 2.79) took over in the seventh in a tie ballgame. Unfortunately the new Sox reliever would not fare as well, allowing the game-winning run on two hits with the biggest coming on an RBI single by Nick Evans.

 

Enrique Burgos came on in the last of the seventh to close out game one, issuing just one free pass in a scoreless frame to secure the 3-2 comeback win for Reno.

Hoping to was the bad taste out of their collective mouth, the Sox came out swinging in game two, scoring three fast runs off of Reno starter Allen Webster in the home first. Matt Clark's two-out, two-run blast gave Colorado Springs a 2-0 lead before consecutive singles by Michael Reed and Juan Centeno allowed Pete Orr to drive in the third run of the inning with an RBI knock of his own.

The Sox held their 3-0 lead until the top of the third when starter Tim Dillard served up a two-run shot to former Sky Sox favorite Jordan Pacheco. The home run was just the second Dillard has allowed this year and cut Reno's deficit to one after three innings of play. Reno tacked one more run on in the fourth to tie the ballgame when catcher Blake Lalli plated Jamie Romak with an RBI single. Dillard's afternoon was done after allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one over four innings of work.

 

The 3-3 did not last long as left-hander Jeremy Horst (0-1, 4.26) would fall victim to the long ball in the fifth. Horst put the first two runners he faced on base via a walk and a single before Danny Dorn moved the runners over with a sac bunt. Coming into the contest with 22 home runs on the season, Jamie Romak stepped to the plate in the most pivotal at-bat of the day. Romak wasted little time, slugging a three-run home run over the left field wall to push Reno ahead 6-3 after five.

 

The Sox would be kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way as left-hander Matt Reynolds (3-5, 5.21) and righty Kaleb Fleck combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Webster to secure the eventual 7-3 win. Rob Wooten and Jim Henderson each twirled shutout frames in the Sox loss.

 

Reno improves to 59-63 with the double header sweep as Colorado Springs falls to 51-71 on the season with the loss.

 

Colorado Springs will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday evening as they try to salvage a series-split with these same Aces in the series-finale. Josh Roenicke (6-9, 5.60) is set to lead the way against Reno right-hander Caleb Clay (7-7, 5.16) with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM MDT.

This was Peterson's 4th appearance of the summer. The 6'7" 21-year-old 17th round pick out of a California community college had fared well since debuting late (July 28th).
