Omar Garcia beaned by Nick Travieso in the 3rd inning. He is ambulatory. Umpire called it a strike? I guess they are saying he swang. Coulter was DHing so they will lose that probably as he is the 4th outfielder. Unless Halcomb comes in in the OF. Meanwhile Hellweg has a 3 inning no hitter going but 6 walks so I don't think he will make it through.

 

Halcomb stayed in playing LF, Ratterree moves to CF, Pena in RF. Hellweg has now drilled one of the Tortugas so look out.

Rattlers drop Sunday's game to South Bend

Cubs beat Wisconsin 4-1

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Ian Happ tripled, homered, and drove in three runs for the South Bend Cubs as they beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Cubs won the rubber game of the three-game series between the teams.

 

South Bend (54-62 overall, 25-24 second half) went in front with three runs in the top of the third inning. Charcer Burks reached second when a popup to shallow right-center dropped in. Then, Gioskar Amaya dropped a sacrifice bunt and reached when the throw went to third and Burks was safe. Happ, who was taken by the Chicago Cubs with the ninth pick of the 2015 draft out of the University of Cincinnati, drilled a triple to right to knock both runners for a 2-0 lead. An RBI grounder by David Bote drove in Happ and the Cubs were up 3-0.

 

Elvis Rubio doubled in the bottom of the fourth inning. He took third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch allowed Rubio to score and the Rattlers (40-78, 17-31) were within two runs.

 

That was the only run that South Bend starting pitcher Zach Hedges allowed in the game. He pitched five innings, gave up four hits, and struck out two to put himself in position for his seventh win of the year.

 

Wisconsin starter Jon Perrin struck out four over five innings and allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits, but was on the hook for the loss.

 

Happ cracked his second homer of the series - and fourth with South Bend - in the eighth inning. He hit a 3-2 pitch from Scott Lieser into the Wisconsin bullpen in right-center to lead off the eighth to put the Cubs up 4-1.

 

A trio of South Bend relievers combined to shutout the Rattlers over the final four innings. The Rattlers had six hits in the game, but went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven runners on base in the game.

 

Blake Allemand, the fifth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 draft out of Texas A&M, had half of Wisconsin's hit total as he went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to six games. Allemand is 16-for-52 (.308) in thirteen games in August and has raised his Midwest League average from .225 to .252.

 

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday. They return to action on Tuesday to start a six-game road trip. Wisconsin will begin the journey in Davenport, Iowa against the Quad Cities River Bandits. Angel Ventura (6-5, 3.09) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Justin Ferrell (3-2, 2.22) is set to start for the River Bandits. Game time is 7:00pm.

It's so awesome that Ian Happ started his ascension in this series... or something.

 

The pitching wasn't bad, 8 strike outs, 8 hits, 1 walk in total, but the defense made some costly mistakes.

 

Blake Allemand (3-4) with another good day at the plate, he's hitting .341 over his last 10 and has bumped his AVE up to .252. Rattler batters walked just once in the game which piqued my curiosity as I hadn't looked at the rankings in a while. The T-Rats had 334 walks coming into today, 11th in the league. Brandon Diaz has the most walks on the team with 46 even though he hasn't played in quite a while, Jamie Ritchie a C from Quad Cities leads the league with 70.

Viera, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (30-17, 67-50) improved to 8-4 against their I-95 rivals, the Brevard County Manatees (20-27, 49-67), with a 4-0 two-hit shutout win on Sunday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

The Tortugas drew six walks in the first four innings off Johnny Hellweg, but could not break the 0-0 tie until the fifth. SS Carlton Daal beat out a leadoff single on a chopper to second, moved up on an errant pickoff throw, and advanced to third on a groundout by RF Sebastian Elizalde. With two outs, Daal crept down the third base line and drew a balk from Hellweg. The balk gave Daytona a 1-0 lead before LF Phillip Ervin struck out on the next pitch to end the inning.

 

RHP Nick Travieso (W, 5-5) left with that one-run lead, working around a pair of walks and a pair of singles to post five scoreless innings with two strikeouts. He retired each of the last eight batters he faced, and has not allowed a run in any of his last 10 innings.

 

The bullpen was perfect. LHP Nolan Becker (H, 4) retired the side in order and picked up a K in the sixth, RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (H, 7) induced a pair of fly balls and struck out a batter in a flawless eighth, and RHP Carlos Gonzalez retired the final six hitters of the game and recorded two strikeouts.

 

Daytona broke the game open with three runs in the eighth. DH Ty Washington grounded a one-out double down the third base line, and scored on a ground ball single to right field from 1B Brian O'Grady. After a 2B Wendell Soto walk and a Daal fielder's choice, Elizalde skied a pitch to right field that Jose Pena dropped. Two runs came home, and the Tortugas had a 4-0 lead.

 

The two teams will match up for eight more games in 2015, including a doubleheader on Belly Buster Monday at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. ET. Fans can listen to the action on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 4:50 p.m. ET.

Update about the Sky Sox status for Monday --

 

Reno and Colorado Springs will play a doubleheader Monday with both games being seven innings. Game one is set to start at 1:00 PM Mountain Time (2:00 PM Central) with game two to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one at Security Service Field.

 

Aces right-hander Aaron Blair (5-1, 3.38) is expected to oppose Sky Sox right-hander Zach Davies (1-0, 5.40) in game one. Game two starters have yet to be determined.

BILOXI, MS - Both clubs had to wait through a 25-minute rain delay, but the Biloxi Shuckers wrapped up a 10-game homestand with a 5-3, rubber-match victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Sunday evening at MGM Park. Biloxi finished the season's longest stretch at home 5-5, and took the series, 3-2, finishing with a 14-6 record against the Blue Wahoos in the inaugural season.

 

Biloxi fell behind early as starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson battled his way through a 37-pitch first inning. After allowing the first three Pensacola batters to reach base on two walks and a single, Johnson recorded the first out of the frame with his first strikeout of the game coming against Marquez Smith. Juan Duran's sacrifice fly to left gave the Blue Wahoos an early, 1-0, lead.

 

The Shuckers tied things up in the home-half of the second with three free passes to start things off to Taylor Green (1x3, R, 2B), Tyrone Taylor (1x3, R, 2B, BB) and Parker Berberet (1x2, 2 RBI, R, 2B). A strikeout to Johnson set up Brett Phillips' (0x3, RBI) sacrifice fly to left field to plate Green.

 

Pensacola took the lead back in the third with an RBI double by Seth Mejias-Brean to score Alex Blandino.

 

Johnson did not factor into the decision, lasting just three innings and surrendering two runs on four hits, four walks and two strikeouts on 72 pitches - 38 for strikes.

 

Drew Gagnon (1-0) took over for the starter out of the Biloxi bullpen to start the fourth and retired 12-straight Pensacola batters over four innings, striking out five and lowering his ERA from 15.75 to 7.88 in the process. .

 

The Shuckers grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-spot. Back-to-back doubles by Taylor and Berberet tied the game at two. Orlando Arcia (2x4) came up two batters later and hit a slow chopper up the middle that Wright charged on and made threw wildly to first, allowing Berberet to score from second and give Biloxi a 3-2 lead.

 

Victor Roache (2x4, HR, RBI, 2 R) made some noise in the fifth with the first homerun by a Shucker since Aug. 5 on an opposite-field blast to give Biloxi a two-run cushion.

 

The Shuckers' lead was cut in half with a solo blast to right off the bat of Juan Duran in the eighth off of Damien Magnifico (SV, 16).

 

Berberet earned an RBI in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Roache and giving the Shuckers an insurance run for a 5-3 lead.

 

Magnifico came back out for the ninth and worked a perfect inning to secure his 16th save in 18 chances and eighth straight.

 

Biloxi has an off day on Monday before traveling to West Tennessee to face off against the Jackson Generals for a five-game series starting on Tuesday. RHP Jorge Lopez (11-5, 2.45) seeks to become the first 12-game winner in the league in game one for Biloxi, while Jackson will send out the man who leads the league in losses, LHP Misael Siverio (4-10, 4.44). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Every time I think the Manatee offensive production is just pitiful (and yes, it's pretty darn bad), I slide over to the Florida State League sortable team batting stats page.

 

Brevard County does consistently rank in the lower half of each offensive stat, but usually falls in that 2/3 to 3/4 of the way down position.

 

So it's not good, but it's not historically awful or anything, despite what may appear to be on the surface.

 

You hate to see such a significant gap in clearcut future big league everyday position player talent at two consecutive levels in the chain, though (High-A and A).

Ben Guez (and his .914 OPS) lands on the Sky Sox DL, Bryan Petersen back on the active roster.

 

We hope to learn more, probably leg-related, but we can't rule out oblique or other possibilities...

 

It is a leg injury for Guez, sorry no more specific...

 

Wow, in the

we linked to Friday, Colorado Springs Manager Rick Sweet indicates that Ben Guez' leg injury (still no exact details) was likely season-ending. Just an awful blow for the 28-year-old; Sweet indicates how much the Brewers like him, and that Milwaukee would like to continue with him (Guez would once again be a minor league free agent this fall).

UPDATE: Apparently Guez' injury is similar to that suffered by Rickie Weeks in August of 2013 (Adam McCalvy article from that time that provides quite a bit of detail).

 

Obviously a major injury, and we wish Ben the very best, as noted earlier.

H-Crew scored four in the top of the 6th to tie, highlighted by Malik Collymore's first Helena home run, a two-run shot, but a two-run (both unearned) Chukars 7th gave the home squad a lead they would not relinquish.

 

SS Jake Gatewood hit his 6th Helena HR in 48 games (just two in 40 Wisconsin games). Gatewood also doubled, his league-leading (tie) 20th.

 

Catcher Milan Post doubled twice. David Denson, DH'ing in this one, was 0-for-2 but with two walks.

18-year-old RHP Marcos Diplan went seven full innings eight starts ago on June 24th (his second start of the season), but has only pitched into the 5th inning once since, and that was only a 4.1 inning effort. After walking ten in 9.1 innings over his prior three starts, Diplan did not issue a free pass in this one (3 IP, 3 R, 7 H, 4 K).

Tortuga Pitching Dominates in Series Opener

Viera, FL - The depth of the Daytona Tortugas (30-17, 67-50 overall) was on display Sunday night as they stifled the Brevard County Manatees (20-27, 49-67 overall) 4-0 at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Both teams had chances in the early stages as each starting pitcher struggled with command but the breakthrough would come in the top of the fifth inning. The frame started with an infield single by Carlton Daal, who then advanced to second when Manatee starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg's pickoff attempt went wide of first base. Sebastian Elizalde moved Daal another 90 feet on a groundout to second. After striking out Taylor Sparks, Hellweg then had two strikes on Phillip Ervin when he was called for a balk with Daal doing plenty of moving off of third base.

 

The Tortugas would put the game on ice in the top of the eighth inning against Javi Salas. Ty Washington would start the rally with a one-out double down the left field line. Brian O'Grady would bring him home right away on a base hit to right. Wendell Soto then sliced a single into right center to put runners at the corners for Daal. A wild pitch would allow Soto to move up to second but Daal had a grounder to Angel Ortega on a drawn-in infield who would throw home to erase O'Grady at the plate. Elizalde then lifted a fly ball to right that Jose Pena misplayed, allowing Soto and Daal to score.

 

The Daytona pitching quartet of Nick Travieso, Nolan Becker, El'Hajj Muhammad and Carlos Gonzalez combined to retire the last 20 Manatee hitters following Chris McFarland's one-out single in the bottom of the third. It was one of just two Manatee hits on the night.

 

Hellweg gave up just the one unearned run on two hits while striking out two and walking six in five innings of work.

 

Omar Garcia stole his 46th and 47th bases of the season before having to leave in the bottom of the third inning after being hit by a Travieso pitch.

 

The two teams will meet again on Monday at Radiology Associates Field in Daytona Beach for a doubleheader. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 5:05 p.m. with a 30-minute interval in between games.

Manatees Examiner --

 

Omar Garcia, who not only singled, but stole two bases in that first inning for the Manatees, was taken out of the game in the third inning, after being hit in the face. “Hopefully Omar’s alright,” said Manatees manager Joe Ayrault, who said the pitch got Garcia on the bottom part of his chin. “It was pretty swollen, but I have to look at it on video to see if it hit the bat first, or what. It’s a good thing it didn’t hit him square and kept going to the backstop.”

 

Johnny Hellweg (1-5) pitched well for the Manatees, allowing two hits in five innings of work. His only issue for much of the night was his control. He walked six batters and struck out two. “He’s healthy,” said Ayrault of Hellweg. “He’s starting to run the ball up there with his velo, just needs to put the hammer down on his command and he’ll be good to go.”

 

When asked about the walks, Ayrault stressed that Hellweg is still coming back from Tommy John surgery. “He’s still rehabbing and getting a feel back for it,” he said.
