The Brewers saw their five game winning streak snapped as they fell to the Cubs 4-2. Boanerges Nova started and took the loss after going six innings, allowing four runs. Third baseman Henry Castillo went 2-for-3 with a triple while shortstop Franly Mallen also added a pair of hits.

Saturday's Manatees/Blue Jays Game Cancelled

VIERA, Fla. - The scheduled game on Saturday, August 15 between the Brevard County Manatees and the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium has been cancelled due to inclement weather. The game will not be made up.

 

City of Rockledge Night has been rescheduled for Sunday, August 16. First pitch against the Daytona Tortugas is at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday.

 

Fans who had tickets to Saturday's games can hold on to their tickets and exchange them at the Space Coast Stadium Box Office for a ticket of equal or lesser value to any future 2015 Brevard County Manatees home game, based on availability.

BILOXI, MS – Jesse Winker of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos continues to torment Southern League pitching, as the Cincinnati Reds’ top prospect once again delivered a finishing move against the Biloxi Shuckers, this time using a two-run homerun to right to defeat the Shuckers, 2-1 on Saturday night. Winker homered in his fifth-straight game, in front of a crowd of a 4,895 at MGM Park.

 

Both clubs combined for just one hit through the first three innings, with Adam Weisenburger (1x3, BB) marking up the first knock for the Shuckers.

 

Tyler Wagner entered the fourth having allowed just one base runner on a walk to Marquez Smith to start the second, but gave up a lead-off double to Ryan Wright to snap a string of six straight batters set down. Winker followed with a single into center, but Brett Phillips gunned down Wright at third for the first out of the inning. Smith became the third consecutive Blue Wahoo to collect a hit off of Wagner to put runners on first and second. Wagner retired Seth Mejias-Brean on a fly out to right and induced Sean Buckley into a groundout to second to escape the jam.

 

Phillips helped out his starter again in the seventh, keeping Pensacola off the board. After a leadoff single by Mejias-Brean, Buckley doubled into center. Mejias-Brean rounded third and headed home, but Phillips hit the cut-off man Orlando Arcia, who threw a strike to Weisenburger, nabbing the runner at home for the out.

 

Wagner picked up his team-leading 15th quality start on the season, and the Shuckers’ fourth straight, tossing seven innings of shutout ball, giving up six hits, walking two and striking out four. Biloxi starters have collected 48 quality starts on the season, with 32 of those coming in the last 57 games.

 

Winker added his fourth homerun of the series, and fifth in the last five games, with a runner on and two outs in the eighth. Yhonathan Barrios (0-1) took over for Wagner to start the inning and set down the first two batters before a single by Ryan Wright set the stage for Winker’s dramatics.

 

Jacob Barnes took the ninth for Biloxi, walked a batter and picked up two strikeouts.

 

Reigning Southern League pitcher of the week Cody Reed (3-1) spun a gem against the Shuckers on Saturday night for Pensacola (28-21). In seven innings, the southpaw struck out 10 and issued four walks while giving up four hits.

 

Biloxi’s (23-25) best chance against Reed came in the sixth inning when Phillips started things off with a walk and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Arcia. With Nathan Orf (1x3) at the plate, Phillips swiped third, but Orf struck out for the second out. Brandon Macias (0x3, BB) grounded out to second to end the threat.

 

The Shuckers ended up breaking through in the ninth off of closer Zack Weiss (SV, 20). Victor Roache (2x3, R, BB) walked on four pitches to open up the inning and Tyrone Taylor (1x4) followed with a single. A passed ball on Kyle Skipworth with Nick Shaw (0x3, RBI) at the plate allowed the runners to advance, giving Shaw the opportunity to left a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Roache for the lone run.

 

Weisenburger and pinch hitter Taylor Green (0x1) were retired to finish the game.

 

The Shuckers will have to go through their fifth consecutive rubber match (2-2) on Sunday night. LHP Hobbs Johnson (7-6, 3.38) takes the mound for Biloxi, while Pensacola will send out RHP Barrett Astin (4-3, 4.58) First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 4:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Rattlers beat Cubs 4-3

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead over the South Bend Cubs Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Zach Cooper and Cody Ponce combined to toss five scoreless innings out of the Wisconsin bullpen to hold that lead to the end of the game for a Timber Rattlers win.

 

Alan Sharkey tripled to start the Wisconsin half of the first inning. Blake Allemand drove in Sharkey with a grounder and the Rattlers (40-77 overall, 17-30 second half) were up 1-0.

 

The Timber Rattlers used a triple and a ground out in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Omar Cotto connected for a three-base hit with one out. Sharkey drove in Cotto with a grounder to first.

 

South Bend (53-62, 24-24) stormed back in the top of the fourth. Ian Happ reached on an error and David Bote doubled to put two runners in scoring position against starting pitcher David Burkhalter. Charcer Burks followed with a double to drive in both runners to tie the game. Burks would steal third and score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from Erick Castillo.

 

Wisconsin answered in the bottom of the fourth. Sthervin Matos started the rally with a single and a steal of second. He would steal third as Tucker Neuhaus took ball four on a walk. Elvis Rubio ripped a double to left to score Matos with the tying run and send Neuhaus to third. Mitch Meyer put the Timber Rattlers ahead with an RBI grounder to first that scored Neuhaus.

 

Cooper, who came off the Wisconsin disabled list on Friday night, entered the game out of the Wisconsin bullpen in the top of the fifth inning for his first appearance since July 11 and gave up a leadoff double to Jeffery Baez. Cooper got the first out with a grounder to the right side that moved Baez to third. Then, Cooper escaped the inning with a strikeout of Ian Happ and catcher Natanael Mejia's pickoff of Baez for an inning-ending double play.

 

Cody Ponce, Milwaukee's second round pick in the 2015 draft, took over for Cooper in the top of the sixth and Bote got to him for a leadoff double. Ponce struck out the next two batters and ended the inning on a grounder back to the mound.

 

Matt Rose started the South Bend seventh inning with a single and was sacrificed to second base, but Ponce stranded Rose with a ground out and a fly out.

 

Ponce retired the Cubs in order in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the victory. He went four innings, allowed two hits, walked none, struck out five, and earned the save.

 

Wisconsin and South Bend have each won a game in the series with the final game of the series set for Sunday afternoon. Jon Perrin (1-3, 4.55) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Zach Hedges (6-7, 3.81) is set to start for the Cubs. Game time is 1:05pm.

 

Timber Rattlers players and coaches will don special Dora the Explorer Jerseys for Sunday's game as part of Nick Jr. at the Ballpark. These jerseys will be up for bid in a silent auction during the game with the proceeds going to Ducks Unlimited. Be on the lookout for a visit from Dora, too!

 

The Brewers Sunday jerseys worn by the players and coaches all season will be up for bid in a live auction after the game. Proceeds from the Brewers Sunday Jersey Auction will go to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Fans may play catch on-field courtesy of Rasmussen College starting at noon. Players will be available for a postgame autograph session sponsored by Tundraland Home Improvements.

This was a fun one... the only pitching blip was when David Burkhalter fell apart in the 4th, but the fantastic double play highlighted above helped Zach Cooper and Cody Ponce was as sharp as he's been since he arrived in WI.

 

The offense woke up today pounding out 10 hits, 2 each by Alan Sharkey (2-4,3B), Sthervin Matos (2-4), and Omar Cotto (2-3,3B). Here's an interesting fun fact, Matos is up to 20 steals in 27 tries this season despite batting just .204 to this point. Elvis Rubio (3-3,2B) was perfect, easily his best performance since the 2 homer game.

Anyone know what Jon Olczak throws?

 

 

Hit 92 as a senior in HS, that's about it based on what's been published.

 

Here's kind of a generic description:

Olczak went two rounds later to the Brewers. Another righty reliever, Olczak, like Britt, steadily improved through his junior year. He ended the campaign with a 2.55 ERA in 23 appearances, fourth most on the team. Olczak probably has more stuff and more projectability than Britt; he fanned more than a batter per inning (47 in 42.1) and held opponents to a paltry .188 batting average. But, while he is no Cory Wilder, Olczak often is unaware of where the ball might travel once it leaves his hand. He walked 29, hit nine, and uncorked nine wild pitches.

Miguel Diaz's 2015 season will be marked as one in which the promising RHP spent most of his time rehabbing from an elbow fracture. He went five innings here and did not walk a batter, but surrendered four runs on nine hits. The Brewer defense was clean all night.

 

Unusual game in that every Brewer contributed at the plate in some manner except for the usually-stellar Trent Clark (0-for-5).

 

2015 13th round catcher Max McDowell (UConn) homered (his 2nd), singled, and was HBP (his third plunking in just 12 pro games).

 

Juan Ortiz (playing LF in this game) had two hits, including a double, and RF Yerald Martinez poked his 2nd HR of the season, but fanned his other three AB's (the Crew struck out ten times against one Beau Wallace walk).

 

Maryvale was 1-for-9 with RISP.

Because the rookie leagues have expanded rosters, they usually don't make use of disabled lists, so sometimes we can miss when a player has been absent.

 

19-year-old switch-hitting Maryvale infielder Daniel Leonardo is one such player, as he's been idle since July 26th.

 

We were loving the work of undrafted RHP Aaron Myers in Maryvale, but he last pitched (and pitched well) back on July 27th.

 

Another non-drafted RHP, Evan Parker, last worked on July 25th.

Saturday's Manatees/Blue Jays Game Cancelled

VIERA, Fla. - The scheduled game on Saturday, August 15 between the Brevard County Manatees and the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium has been cancelled due to inclement weather. The game will not be made up.

 

The Manatees had announced prior to game time that the contest at Space Coast Stadium was a complete sellout (fireworks among other happenings).

 

What a brutal summer it's been for the Florida State League (even more so than usual), the Manatees, and yes, the impact on player development within the league.

"Winker's done a good job,'' Biloxi manager Carlos Subero said. "I think this is his fifth game with a home run. But we had our opportunities and didn't come through. We didn't execute and that's what it comes down to. It was a great game by both teams. Their pitcher (Cody Reed) was outstanding, throwing seven innings and making the pitches when he needed to.

 

"Late in the game we had runners on second and third with nobody out and we could have done something. Tomorrow is the rubber game. We need to start hitting. We haven't been able to hit the last couple of days."

 

You may have noticed in the Biloxi post above that RHP Barrett Astin (Jonathan Broxton acquisition trade) faces the Shuckers on Sunday.

Sky Sox spring past Aces in series opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. - The Reno Aces recorded just seven hits offensively as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox scored a series-opening 7-1 win Saturday night at Security Service Field.

 

Already-wet field conditions worsened when heavy rains delayed the game in the top of the fourth inning. The 1-hour, 31-minute delay ended both starters' nights early, and the Sky Sox bullpen outdueled Reno's over the final six frames to secure the win.

 

Aces starter A.J. Schugel (1-6) suffered the tough-luck loss after yielding one run over three innings. Michael Reed tripled with one out in the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Juan Centeno. Schugel fanned four and walked none.

 

Right-hander Blayne Weller was called upon after the lengthy delay, and he struggled in his first of three innings. In the home half of the fourth, the recently-promoted Weller yielded four runs - two earned - on four hits, one walk and an error.

 

Luis Sardinas started the Sky Sox rally with a single to left and one out later, moved to second on a single by Matt Clark. Weller then uncorked a wild pitch, advancing both runners 90 feet before a walk loaded the bases for Centeno who delivered a two-run double to left.

 

With runners at second and third, Matt Dominguez hit a grounder to Danny Worth at short, but Worth's throw to the plate skipped past, allowing Reed to score. Yadiel Rivera then laced a run-scoring single to left to make it 5-0.

 

Colorado Springs (51-69) tacked on two runs in the seventh on an RBI double from Clark and later, a wild pitch thrown by reliever Kevin Vance.

 

Reno (57-63) squandered golden scoring opportunities in the third and fourth innings. In the third, a walk, single and wild pitch put runners at second and third for Danny Dorn, but Sky Sox starter Ariel Pena struck out Dorn to escape. In the fourth, the Aces loaded the bases but pinch-hitter Gerald Laird grounded into a fielder's choice.

 

Mike Strong evened his record at 1-1 after throwing 2 2/3 shutout innings.

 

Worth notched the only multi-hit game for the Aces, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

 

The Aces and Sky Sox play game two of their four-game set Sunday evening. The Aces will send right-hander Aaron Blair (5-1, 3.38) to the mound while the Sky Sox will start right-hander Zach Davies (1-0, 5.40). First pitch is set for 4:05 PST (6:05 Central).

Brewers drop doubleheader to Chukars

An early lead turned into a deficit, which led to a late rally on Saturday, before the Helena Brewers ultimately dropped an 8-7 decision to Idaho Falls in extra innings. The game, scheduled as a seven-inning opener to a doubleheader, was decided with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

 

Things didn't get much better in the nightcap, where the Brewers fell 6-1. It was the team's fifth consecutive loss and eighth in their last nine games.

 

In the first game of the night, the Brewers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first and led 3-1 after the second. The Chukars scratched back with runs in the third and fourth, and took the lead with a four-run fifth.

 

The Brewers responded, however, with a four-run frame of their own, in the top of the seventh. Jose Cuas got it started with a line-drive double. And, with two outs, Jake Gatewood -- who finished the game 4 for 5 with a pair of RBIs -- singled to center to score Cuas. A wild pitch gave Helena another run, and a deep single by Milan Post scored two more to knot it up at 7-7. Post, though, was picked off at first to end the inning.

 

Neither team scored in the eighth, but in the bottom of the ninth a Joshua Banuelos double to right -- with two outs -- scored Amalani Fukofuka to end it.

Wow, 21st round NC State RHP Jon Olczak fanned ten over just four innings, and only walked one.

 

What is with this year's catcher draft class? Like Max McDowell in Maryvale, Charles Galiano is magnetic (four HBP's in just 15 games).

 

SS Jake Gatewood 4-for-5 with his 19th double (2nd most in the Pioneer League).

 

7th round infielder George Iskenderian made his return after a two-week absence (leg injury) in the twinbill.

In the second game, Idaho Falls put up at least one run in every inning but the third, running away with the victory. George Iskenderian, who finished 2 for 3 with a walk, scored the lone Helena run in the top of the sixth.

The teams will conclude their series with a 4:00 PM game Sunday (5:00 Central), before Helena travels to Ogden to start a four-game set on Monday.

I'm excited that Franly has really started to dial in, almost to an .800 OPS in the DSL as an 18 year-old at SS is not getting the recognition it should. Along with Ignacio it will be interesting to see how IF spots are divided up in Arizona and Helena next year.

 

Roache about a week shy of 200 PAs in AA and his OPS is .846 with more power, more average, more walks, and fewer Ks. I could be convinced, but between the power potential and OF defense of him and so many of our other prospects moving to first in the offseason seems to make a lot of sense.
