2006-07 DFE Thread - Five Players in Final DFE Class

Technically, we only had that one summer to sign Pence -- he went to a four-year school that fall after he was drafted in June.

We drafted Pence in round 40 after his freshman year at a Juco, Texarkana, and followed his huge sophmore season there. He went unsigned, then spent a year at a 4 year school, Texas-Arlington, and was drafted by the Astros in round 2 in 2004.

Mass Haas has it right. Pence never was really a DFE. The Brewers did draft Pence after his freshman year, but he transferred to Texas-Arlington for his sophomore and junior years, as he only spend one year at Texarkana.

Chad Robinson has signed, per BA. Great addition. Costs the Brewers 500K, which is late 2nd round money. Things are looking great everywhere for The Crew.

That is very exciting. Robinson would have been a third to fifth round pick in last year's draft if it hadn't been for his injury in high school. The Brewers scouting department deserves a lot of credit for convincing Robinson for taking the JC route to be eligible as a DFE.

Cool. - Way cool. Is there anyone other than Haydel that they may interested in signing?

I mentioned this in the Chad Robinson thread, but a name I have been talking about quite a bit the past couple of weeks is Rob Bryson. Bryson, Robinson and Haydel were ranked the third to fifth best available DFEs after Jordan Walden and Matt Latos, and hopefully the Brewers can get all three in the fold.

These guys are also the reason why we shouldn't expect the team to draft a player that could fall such as Matt Wieters just because they don't have a second round pick due to the signing of Jeff Suppan. That money, and then some, will be necessary to sign all three of these guys, as Haydel may be looking for close to seven figures and Bryson could require another half-million.

EDIT: And don't forget about TJ Macy, who also has enjoyed a very fine season and would be another exciting power arm to add to the system. Mehdi Djebbar is another interesting candidate, and while Aaron Tullo walked a ton of batters this season, he too has a power arm that would be a welcomed addition to the farm system.

Great news on Robinson signing. It appears Terrell Alliman returned to high school for his senior year and turned down the Brewers.

Teams learning that Alliman's the real deal

Bill Doucet, Cambridge

(May 24, 2007)

Terrell Alliman is the real deal. And if getting drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 28th round (842nd overall) last June in the Major League Baseball draft wasn't proof enough, just watching what the slick centre fielder is doing at the plate this season validates that assessment.

Hitting over .300 already, the 18-year-old Waterloo native bumped it up even higher by going 4-for-6 in a doubleheader on Monday against the Canadian Thunderbirds, as the Inter County Terriers swept both games by scores of 10-1 and 7-0 at Riverside Park.

The Bluevale Collegiate Institute student said getting drafted has helped him get off to a hot start this season.

"It was huge," Alliman said. "It really boosted my confidence. This year, I'm just playing hard and trying to get drafted again."

Alliman held off signing with Milwaukee and decided to return for his final year of high school. He has committed to Southern Nevada Community College and will re-enter the draft this year, hoping that he will get chosen higher and have more leverage in signing with a team. He said it wasn't a hard decision to pass up Milwaukee's advances.

"It wasn't that tough. I went back in the draft knowing that this year I was going to be bigger, faster and stronger, and my stock would definitely rise. I don't think it was a bad decision," he said.

Helping the Terriers out of a funk at the beginning of the season won't hurt either. Losing close games at the start of the campaign when their bats went cold, the Terriers are now clubbing the ball with frequency and are 7-2 in their last nine games.

"We're seeing the ball well," Alliman said.

"We're getting back into the swing of things and the longer the season goes on the better we're going to get. We're hitting the ball hard and just putting it in play."

The Terriers have been stepping it up lately, as seen by their dominance over the Thunderbirds in the second game of Monday's double dip.

Nathan Linesman, Billy Martin and Brad Furdal all dominated on the mound, as the Thunderbirds couldn't get a runner past second base.

In fact, in four innings of work, Linesman had nine strikeouts and only allowed four runners to reach base, one on an error by first baseman Jeff Hunt.

The Terriers on the other hand, jumped on starting pitcher Tyler Bradley right away, as Alliman singled home Chad Marshall, who reached base on a throwing error by second baseman Kellen Harrigan. The Terriers managed to load the bases in the inning but Brent Mitchell grounded out to shortstop Sean Jamieson to end the threat.

The Terriers tried to nibble away at the Thunderbirds, but weren't able to cash in any more runs until the fourth inning when Joel Stubbs crossed the plate after Marty Chasles smashed a one-hopper off first baseman Jordan Windisch's knee and deflected into centre field.

Mitchell plated Hunt in the fifth inning to make it 3-0, before the Terriers broke out against reliever Brian Woodhouse in the sixth.

Woodhouse walked Marshall, Chasles and Alliman to load the bases before Brian Burton hit a ball that short-hopped the left field fence for a double - scoring two runs - and Hunt doubled to right-centre field to score two more, chasing Woodhouse from the game.

We'll see if they take another shot with him in June.

Finally able to find some numbers from Lee Haydel's season.

www.nevadaappeal.com:80/a.../105260137

Quote:
Lee Haydel leads the team offensively with a .421 average, three home runs, 12 doubles and 40 RBI. There's also Matt Gaudet (.352, 48RBI) and Craig Westcott (team-high eight homers, 46RBI, .333). Haydel was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2006 and Gaudet was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2005 and has signed to play at LSU next season.

Thanks for sharing that Minigoon.

The JUCO World Series is taking place this weekend, an event that continues through next Saturday (the championship game will be available to watch on CSTV on tape delay a week from today, June 4th). I'm pretty sure Lee Haydel's season is now over, as Delgado lost their first two games of the tourney, and looking at the bracket, I don't see where they would fit:

Don't be surprised if the Brewers move fairly quickly on this one, as we may have word of Haydel signing by tomorrow.

Haydel in the tourney went 2 for 8 with a triple, a run, an RBI, a walk a strikeout and a stolen base (in his only attempt).

Three other teams with ties to the Brewers DFE class are in the tournament as well: San Jacinto (Matt Coburn), Shelton State (Clay Jones) and Cowley County (Matt Peck). Jones in particular is having a good tournament, currently with 6 hits in 9 ABs, 1 HR and 6 RBI. He's been playing first base.

No word on Haydel or Bryson? The rest of the highly ranked DFEs have reportedly signed. This can't be a good sign. Yuck.

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed both Haydel and Bryson. With Robinson and even Nick Tyson, that is four very exciting prospects that have been added to the system. No other DFEs are expected to be signed (or at least announced, since the signing deadline has passed).

Interesting to see they managed to land 5 DFE's. I like adding 3 polished pitchers. I tend to favor drafting a bunch of pitchers, but I think our system could use some corner outfielders, SS, C, and 1b at this point. I'd focus on rounds 5-15 being a bit pitcher heavy.

Good news, and I look forward to following them in Helena

Awesome news on the DFEs. its like the Brewers already had there draft. The Brewers have had a ton of nice prospects from this process, though Parra was the only one previously with any national hype. To now land 3 hyped guys is a major shot in the arm.

Also nice they didn't have to break the bank on Haydel, there was talk he might get 7 figures, the 2nd round money he got is more appropriate. Its nice that he's developed some pop instead of being just slap and dash. If he's grown this much this late, he might not be done.

Great news on Haydel and Bryson. I was really hoping the Brewers would get them in. A little dissapointed that Clay Jones was not signed. I kind of thought they would try and get another catcher signed. Pretty good haul though for the final DFE class. Well done.

To be honest, I didn't think they would be able to sign both Haydel and Bryson. I had heard that they thought they could get one done, but not both, so major kudos are deserved for the Brewers scouting department for making both happen.

I agree with X's sentiments, it's like the draft already happened, or at least it's like the Brewers didn't lose their 2nd round pick and had a couple of comp picks to boot. I will be very interested to hear what Bryson signed for when and if it is released, as I'm guessing it could be in the range that both Robinson and Haydel received.

Per BA, Bryson signed for $300 K. Tons of big ticket signings this year, with 28 teams involved in the action.

I wanted to point out that former Brewers DFE candidate (twice actually) Aaron Tullo was named the 2nd best prospect in the Florida Collegiate League from this summer according to PG Crosschecker. Same old, same old for Tullo, who was praised for his live arm but couldn't hit the strike zone with consistency, walking 23 batters in 27 IP. Scouts are still saying his control issues come from TJ surgery, but that was two years ago now.
