Final: Pensacola 1, Biloxi 0

Hader strikes out seven over six innings in 1-0 loss to Wahoos

Jesse Winker homered for the fourth straight day in the first inning for the decisive blow

Biloxi Shuckers

Josh Hader made his third start as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization on Friday night (M.K. Krebs)

BILOXI, MS - Jesse Winker homered for the fourth straight day for Pensacola in the top of the first and it was the decisive blow in the Shuckers 1-0 loss on Friday night at MGM Park, in front of a crowd of 3,211. Southern League ERA leader Tim Adleman shutout Biloxi over 7.1 innings, en route to his first win in four chances over the Shuckers. The defeat drops Biloxi back under .500 in the second half, and 17-14 at MGM Park.

Winker's first inning homer to left, off of Biloxi starter Josh Hader was his 12th of the season, and the Cincinnati Reds top prospect has driven in five of the Wahoos' seven runs in the first three games in the series.

Hader (1-1) rolled along after the long ball (his fifth surrendered this season), striking out seven in his six innings of work, giving the lefty from Maryland 20 strikeouts in three games as a Shucker. Houser and Hader over the past two days have struck out 15 and walked none in 12 innings of work. Biloxi pitching went on to face the minimum from the third inning on, and sat down 21 of 22 batters to close out the game.

Equally as impressive out of the bullpen for the Shuckers was Brooks Hall, who walked the first batter he faced in Winker, but induced a double play with one out to erase the base runner. The South Carolina native set down the final eight batters of the night.

Adleman (7-8) came in 0-3 against the Shuckers, but held Biloxi off the board and struck out five and walked one, surrendering five hits.

The Shuckers' best chance to get on the board came in the eighth. Nathan Orf (1x1, 2B) doubled with one out to left, but a fly out to center by Brett Phillips (0x4), and a pop out on a bunt attempt by Orlando Arcia (0x4) ended the threat.

Phillips' five-game hitting streak was snapped with the hitless performance. The shutout was the 11th issued to the Shuckers this season and second blanking by the Wahoos. The Shuckers continue to dominate the season series, leading it 13-5.

Biloxi will look to get back in the win column and take the five-game set on Saturday night. RHP Tyler Wagner (9-5, 2.46) will make his second attempt for his 10th win of the season for Biloxi, which would give him three consecutive seasons with double-digit victories. LHP Cody Reed (2-1, 3.57) will make his fourth appearance for Pensacola since being acquired in a trade from the Kansas City Royals for Johnny Cueto on July 26. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to http://www.biloxishuckers.com.

What to make of Michael Reed's small sample in AAA?

Two doubles, a walk, and four RBI today - his batting average is .182, but he's walking a lot, and when he gets hits, they're doubles or triples. Reed may well be ready to compete for a job in Milwaukee next spring.

South Bend routs Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/0/2/135638702/cuts/Allemand_WEB_aiiwjghs_vm2hsfqr.jpg

Blake Allemand went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and an RBI for the Rattlers on Friday night.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The South Bend Cubs defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 12-2 on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Jesse Hodges homered, doubled twice, and drove in five runs for the Cubs. James Norwood allowed one hit over six scoreless innings for the win.

South Bend (53-61 overall, 24-23 second half) went in front with a run in the top of the second inning. David Bote started the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second base. Rattlers starting pitcher Nathan Kirby, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 40th selection in the 2015 MLB draft out of Virginia, got the second out, but hit Matt Rose on a 1-2 pitch to extend the inning. Hodges doubled off the top of the wall in right to drive in Bote. Rose was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score on the play.

The Cubs added to their lead in the top of the third. Kirby walked the leadoff batter and issued another walk with one out. Ian Happ, the first round pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2015 draft, lined a single to right and drove in a run. Bote was next and he doubled to the gap in right-center to score two more runs for a 4-0 lead.

Kirby retired the next two batters to end the third and struck out the first two batters of the fourth before leaving the game on his pitch limit.

South Bend scored again in the fifth inning with a long, solo home run off the bat of Happ against Luke Curtis. In the sixth, another RBI double by Hodges against Eric Hanhold made it 6-0.

Norwood did not allow a hit through the first five innings of the game. That changed in the sixth inning. Omar Cotto reached on an error to start the frame. Blake Allemand followed with an RBI double and Wisconsin (39-77, 16-30) picked up their first run of the game on their first hit. Later in the inning, Tucker Neuhaus drove in Allemand with a sacrifice fly and the Rattlers were within 6-2.

But, the Cubs got those two runs back in the top of the seventh inning on a run scoring wild pitch and an RBI single by Chancer Burks to go back up by six runs.

Gleyber Torres drove in a run with a two-out double in the top of the eighth after an error extended the inning against Hanhold. The Cubs poured it on in the ninth with three runs off Tyler Linehan, who returned to the active roster off the disabled list earlier in the day. Matt Rose drove in the first run with a single. Hodges completed his night - and the scoring in the game - with a two-run home run.

Allemand had a single in the eighth inning against reliever Ryan McNeil. Neuhaus had Wisconsin's other hit, a ninth inning double off McNeil.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday night. David Burkhalter (4-7, 4.90) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Jake Stinnett (5-4, 4.52) is set to start for the Cubs. Game time is 6:35pm.

Royalty returns to the ballpark for Storybook Princess Night. Stick around after the game for a great FOX 11 Fireworks display.

If you can't make it out to the game, the radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. The broadcast is also available on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. If you are a subscriber to MiLB.TV, the game is also available on that platform.

Rattler Radio Postgame Post – August 14, 2015

I've grown pretty fond of Erickson over the years, he even answers silly questions thoughtfully, and he explained the reason for Sharkey's day off.

Wisconsin Boxscore

The pitching stunk and the batters managed just 3 hits so lets get acquainted with the Cubs for those of your that don't follow the draft and prospects outside of the Brewer organization.

Cubs' starting pitcher James Norwood was a 7th round pick of the Cubs in 2014. He works in the low to mid 90s with his FB and it has some arm side run. He throws a curve, cutter/slider, and a change... all pretty average. He was the Cubs' 29th rated prospect coming into the season.

Ian Happ who hit one of the longer HRs to leave the stadium that Mehring has seen was the 9th overall pick in this year's draft and is starting to get his feet under him now in full season ball. He's a switch hitter, projects to hit for high average and at least average power, he runs well, but his arm pretty weak. He's played LF, CF, and 2B in college, right now he's playing CF. BA doesn't rank this year's draftees in the mid season 10.

SS Gleyber Torres is a stud, he was the #2 prospect in the Cubs' midseason 10 and was the rumored centerpiece of the Cole Hamels deal which thankfully never happened. He is the most expendable SS piece other than Castro so there is a rather high probability that he gets moved at some point. Torres was an expensive international signee in 2013 (1.7 mil), in fact the Cubs signed both top players that year. Eloy Jimenez (2.8 mil) was the other and while he wasn't as successful out of the gate, he too is stateside. As the MWL's youngest player Gleyber is a natural baseball player with very good instincts, has good hands, and an above average arm at SS. He projects to be an above average hitter with fringe power and is a pretty average runner.

Gabryszwski, Browning Blank Brevard

Loveless Shines in 2-0 Dunedin Victory

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

Cy Sneed, seen here from a game earlier this season, pitched six innings and allowed just one run on Friday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

Viera, FL - Jeremy Gabryszwski dominated over seven shutout innings as the Dunedin Blue Jays (20-27, 52-65 overall) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (20-26, 49-66 overall) 2-0 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Gabryszwski (8-6, 3.49 ERA) surrendered just three hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out six. Gabryszwski allowed just one man to reach second in his seven innings of work.

Wil Browning recorded the final six outs of the ballgame to earn his 18th save of the season.

The Blue Jays took the lead against Brevard County starter Cy Sneed in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Derrick Loveless. For Loveless, it was his ninth homer of the season. The Loveless homer was the only mistake Sneed (3-2, 2.60 ERA) made all night. He gave up one run on four hits over six innings. Sneed did not walk a batter and tied a career high with eight strikeouts.

Dunedin added an insurance run in the eighth inning against reliever Tristan Archer. Mike Reeves doubled to left field with no outs. After a J.D. Davis sacrifice bunt, Loveless added an RBI single. Archer allowed a run on five hits in three innings of relief.

The Manatees and Blue Jays will conclude the series tomorrow night at Space Coast Stadium. RHP Javi Salas (7-8, 4.38 ERA) will get the start for Brevard County. Dunedin will send LHP Shane Dawson (1-1, 3.27 ERA) to the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Derrick Loveless, like his namesake the evil genius Miguelito from the TV show Wild, Wild West, comes back periodically to menace the good guys. Loveless has 9 home runs on the season, 4 against the Manatees. Cy Sneed was very good again:

6 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 R (the Loveless HR)

Garrett Cooper was 2-4 and Michael Ratterree had a double. The Manatees have now faced Gabryszwski 4 times, you'd think they'd be ready for him by now, he's not a hard thrower. Chris McFarland, one of the who's hot guys from Miller Park Prospects, struck out for the 100th time this year in the first inning (468 at bats). He has 25 walks.

Even when CF Trent Clark is hitless (0-for-3), he works two walks.

With RF Demi Orimoloye away (a reminder why), RF Yerald Martinez took over in a big way with two doubles and a walk. Third baseman Jorge Quiterio and DH Zach Taylor also had two hits (Taylor with a double) as the lower half of the order performed well in this one.

SS Gilbert Lara, returned to the three-spot in the lineup, was 1-for-5 with an RBI (one K).

Final: Colorado Springs 8, Round Rock 5, 12 innings

Sox Secure Series Split With 8-5 Extra-Inning Win

The Sky Sox and Express would need 12 innings to determine a winner as Colorado Springs plated four runs in the decisive twelfth to earn 8-5 victory and six-game series-split with Round Rock before a crowd of 10,160 at Dell Diamond on Friday night.

Each starter turned in strong performances for their respective teams with veteran left-hander Derek Holland departing with a 3-2 lead for the Express after five. Holland allowed just two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out eight over five innings of work. The Sox did their only damage against Holland in the fourth when Michael Reed tied the ballgame at two with a two-run double.

Hiram Burgos was effective for Colorado Springs, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while also striking out eight. Michael Choice and Thomas Field drove in runs in the home second to open the night’s scoring in a rough frame for the Sox right-hander. The Express would retake a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a Hanser Alberto RBI single before Burgos’ night was through.

Celebrating his 31st birthday, Nevin Ashley knotted the ballgame with at three in the sixth with a sacrifice flyout against reliever Ross Wolf. Luis Sardinas’ run-scoring double in the seventh gave Colorado Springs a late 4-3 lead that would last a mere five batters.

Michael Choice drove in the game-tying run in the very next frame against left-hander Jeremy Horst with a sacrifice flyout. This would be the last scoring by either side until the decisive 12th as both bullpen’s traded zeros in strong performances.

Horst gave way to Preston Guilmet in the Round Rock eighth after two frames of solid relief. Guilmet’s two scoreless frames gave way to a 2.2 inning performance by right-hander Austin Ross (2-0, 6.35) to keep the Express off the board in the game’s pivotal final frames.

Held scoreless for four innings, the Sky sox offense would breakout for four runs in the top of the 12th against flame-throwing reliever Luke Jackson (2-3, 4.50) to all but secure the lengthy contest. The Sox would collect three hits and two walks in the frame with Domingo Santana’s RBI double representing the go-ahead fifth run. Matt Clark added an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-4 before Reed added another two-run double to give the outfielder four RBIs on the night. The two-run two-bagger gave Colorado Springs an 8-4 advantage heading into the Express 12th.

This is the first time the Sky Sox have ever scored four runs in the 12th inning, scoring three runs in the 12th inning six times before. The only other time where the Sky Sox scored four or more in an inning in the 12th or later was on May 10th, 1989 at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver when the Sox scored four runs in the top of the 14th inning to beat the Canadians that day, 6-2.

The Express would scratch their final run across in the final frame when Thomas Field’s two-out RBI double knocked Ross out of the game in favor of veteran reliever Jim Henderson. Henderson would induce a fly out off the bat of Beamer Weems to earn his second save of the season and end the ballgame. The win improves Colorado Springs to 50-69 while dropping Round Rock to 68-52 on the season.

The Sox will look to make it three straight as they head home to take on the Reno Aces in the first of a four-game set on Saturday evening. Ariel Pena (1-2, 4.94) is slated to make the spot-start against Reno righty A.J. Schugel (1-5, 13.50) with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) at Security Service Field.

Sardinas' night got me to look a little closer at his previous career numbers. As a big plus he is still only 22. At first glance a negative would be not having an OPS over .700 since 2013. However in 2014 despite never posting a .700 OPS at any level the Rangers promoted him to AA briefly then AAA, and finally the majors. Back in 2013 his BB numbers were close to 1/10 ABs, but have plummeted since then given the rise in levels and the tendency that can produce for guys with borderline discipline to start hacking away that is not surprising. Consider me a little more optimistic for his future. Could be a very crowded AAA infield to start next year.
