The Brewers extended their winning streak to four, with a 6-5 walk-off win. Nelson Hernandez started and went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs. Jesus Brea worked the final 3.1, allowing just an unearned run and picked up the win. Bismar Nunez went 2-for-4 with a double while Adolfo Morillo also added a pair of hits.

Wang, Early Outburst Carry 'Tees in Series Opener

Viera, FL - The Brevard County Manatees (20-25, 49-65 overall) were the beneficiaries of a strong effort from starting pitching for the second consecutive night in a 4-3 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays (19-27, 51-65 overall) Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

The Manatees took the initiative right away in the bottom of the first inning against Blue Jays starter Alonzo Gonzalez. The inning started with an Omar Garcia single to center, he then stole second as Chris McFarland struck out. His effort would be rewarded as Clint Coulter ripped a double off of the top of the wall in right center to put the Manatees on top. After Garrett Cooper flew out, Robinzon Diaz slapped a single back through the box to score Coulter and double the lead.

 

Brevard County continued to sizzle at the plate the following inning as Taylor Brennan laced a leadoff triple to center. The Jays would bring the infield in but it backfired as Dustin Houle hit a ball right at Jason Leblebijian at shortstop that went through his legs, allowing Brennan to come home.

 

Insurance would come for the 'Tees in the bottom of the third, which was ignited by a leadoff ground-rule double by Coulter. Cooper got in on the act with a single in to center to score Coulter. Diaz followed with a single and the bases would be loaded with one out when Houle once again reached on an Leblebijian (error). The rally would be short-circuited, however, when Jose Pena hit into a double play to end the inning.

 

That lead would hold until the ninth inning when Dunedin put up a valiant final rally. Stephen Peterson walked Matt Dean to start the inning and would score from first when Mitch Nay followed with a double to right and advanced on the throw. Nay then scored when Derrick Loveless grounded out to first. Peterson would be lifted for Kaleb Earls, who promptly walked Leblebijian. Dickie Joe Thon doubled down the left field line, moving Leblebijian to third. Earls then struck out Jorge Saez and had a full count on Anthony Alford before issuing a wild pitch on ball four that allowed Leblebijian to score and put the tying run at third. However, Earls recovered to strike out J.D. Davis to seal the win and his sixth of the season.

 

Wei-Chung Wang made the 'Tees offensive efforts count by throwing six shutout innings, striking out four and walking one to earn his ninth win of the season. Coulter, Diaz, Garcia and McFarland all recorded multi-hit games for Brevard County. Coulter's two doubles gave him 28 for the season, he also recorded his team-leading 52nd RBI of the season. Cooper drove in his 51st run of the season.

 

The two teams return to action Friday night as RHP Cy Sneed (3-1, 2.77 ERA) will be on the bump against RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski (7-6, 3.73 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

BILOXI, MS – Thanks to a five-run scoring burst in the fifth inning, the Biloxi Shuckers erased an early three-run deficit on Thursday night, taking game two over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, 6-5 at MGM Park. The Shuckers have now won five in-a-row over the Blue Wahoos, and have dominated the season series by taking 13 of the first 17 contests. Biloxi moves to 4-3 on the homestand and a league-best 23-14 in one-run games.

 

Adrian Houser picked up his first win as a member of the Shuckers and Brewers’ organization with a quality start and season and career-high eight strikeouts, now walks over six innings.

 

Biloxi (23-23) opened the scoring for the fourth consecutive game, this time using a RBI bloop single off the bat of Parker Berberet (1x3, RBI, BB) to bring home Taylor Green (2x4, 2 RBI, R, 2B) for the 1-0 advantage.

 

Pensacola (26-20) bounced back with a four-run third. Starting pitcher Sal Romano reached on an error by first baseman Nick Ramirez (0x2, 2 BB) to start things out for the Blue Wahoos, Bryson Smith followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position before Alex Blandino grounded out to third for the first out. Jesse Winker erased the Shuckers lead with a three-run homerun over the left field wall. Juan Duran followed two batters later with a solo shot onto the right-field berm to put Biloxi in a three-run hole.

 

The two homeruns surrendered in the third bring the total to 11 by the opposition at MGM Park during the first seven games of the 10-game homestand.

 

The Shuckers erupted for five runs in the fifth to retake the lead and never looked back. Houser walked with one out to set up the rally and moved up to second on a single by Brett Phillips (2x4, R, 2B, BB). Orlando Arcia (2x4, 2 RBI, R, 2B) brought Biloxi within a run with a sharp double down the left-field line, bringing home both runners. A walk to Nathan Orf (0x3, R, BB) kept the line moving for Ramirez (0x2, 2 BB), who lifted a fly ball to left-center, allowing Arcia to move to third. With Victor Roache (1x3, R, BB) at the plate, a passed ball on Kyle Skipworth allowed Arcia to score and tie the game. Back-to-back walks to Roache and Josh Fellhauer (0x3, BB) extended the inning for Green, who smashed a two-run single into right to put the Shuckers up, 6-4.

 

Houser (1-0) held the lead in the sixth by striking out the side to end his third start as a Shucker. The righty from Oklahoma earned his first quality start in Biloxi, allowing four runs – two earned – on five hits. Since coming over in the trade with the Houston Astros, Houser has not walked a batter in 17 innings, while handing out 17 strikeouts.

 

Jacob Barnes (IP, H, 2 SO) and Yhonathan Barrios (IP, H, BB, 2 SO) bridged the gap to the ninth, striking out four in two innings. Damien Magnifico locked down his 15th save in 17 chances, allowing a run in the ninth for the 6-5 final.

 

Biloxi looks for its third consecutive victory on Friday night at MGM Park agains Pensacola. LHP Josh Hader (1-0, 4.15) will toe the rubber for a third time as a member of the Shuckers, while the Blue Wahoos will send out RHP Timothy Adleman (6-8, 2.41). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Stewart knocks in five runs as Whitecaps beat Wisconsin

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-3 on Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Spencer Turnbull allowed two runs over 7-1/3 innings for his tenth victory of the season with support from Christin Stewart's five RBI in the game.

 

West Michigan (59-55 overall, 26-19 second half) scored in the first inning. They loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a fielder's choice. Stewart's blooper to left dropped in front of Mitch Meyer. However, Meyer was able to throw to second to get the force play for the second out, but the runner from third scored for a 1-0 lead.

 

Wisconsin (39-76, 16-29) went in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Elvis Rubio singled to start the inning. Tucker Neuhaus doubled to the track in right field with one out to drive in Rubio and tie the game. Mitch Meyer singled up the middle with two outs to knock in Neuhaus and the Rattlers were up 2-1.

 

The Whitecaps had two on with two outs in the top of the third inning when Stewart hit a deep fly to center. Omar Cotto made a long, twisting run back and got a glove on the ball, but couldn't hold on for the final out. Both runs scored on the double and the Whitecaps were up 3-2.

 

Turnbull took over from there as he struck out six and allowed three hits from the third through the seventh innings.

 

Wisconsin reliever Devin Williams kept the score where it was at as he tossed four scoreless innings by pitching around five hits and a walk.

 

Stewart made it 5-2 with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Scott Lieser.

 

Turnbull left the game with a runner at first and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning in favor of Johan Belisario. Greg McCall pulled the Timber Rattlers closer with a two-out RBI double.

 

West Michigan padded their lead in the top of the ninth when Joey Pankake hit a two-run homer off David Carver.

 

In the bottom of the ninth, Luis Aviles doubled with two outs for his third hit of the game, but the Rattlers dropped the game. The Rattlers also dropped the series to the Whitecaps, who won the final two games of the three-game set.

 

The Timber Rattlers welcome the South Bend Cubs to town on Friday night to begin a three-game series. Nathan Kirby (0-0, 1.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. James Norwood (1-1, 4.79) is set to start for the Cubs. Game time is 7:05pm.

 

Fang is celebrating his birthday on Friday night and all his friends are invited. The Timber Rattlers are hosting their annual "Cans for Cake Drive" for Fang's Birthday. Fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit St. Joseph's Food Pantry and receive a piece of Fang's Birthday cake!

 

A pregame kickball game involving mascots from area businesses with Fang as the captain of one team and his evil counterpart Gnaf as the captain of the other team is on the schedule, too. Get to the game early and cheer on Fang as he looks to stay unbeaten on his birthday. Plus, make time to stop at the Special Memories Petting Zoo outside the stadium on your way into the game.

 

Children 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the postgame Fireworks display on this North Shore Bank/Y100 Family Night.

Okay not really... Devin Williams was effective but sort of sloppy allowing 5 hits and a walk over 4 innings while just striking out 2. He did however sneak his ERA just below 3.00 to 2.99 after today's action. Unfortunately the rest of the pitchers didn't factor favorably in the outcome of the game.

 

Per the boxscore, and the not the game summary above, Greg McCall (2-3,2B,BB) and Luis Aviles (2-4) paced the Rattlers with 2 hits a piece.

The win was the first for recently-acquired pitcher Adrian Houser, who got his third start as a Shucker. Houser struck out eight batters and did not give up any walks during his six innings on the mound.

 

“It feels great to get this win,” Houser said. “It’s my first with the new organization and the new guys. It’s good to get it under the belt and get it out of the way. This transition has gone really well. They are a good group of guys. We’ve been having a lot of fun and playing well.”

Phillips adds big time talent to Shuckers' lineup

Prior to Wednesday night's 4-1 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, new Shuckers centerfielder Brett Phillips talked about how his first two weeks with the team hadn't gone how he would've liked.

 

Five hours later, he stood in the same spot outside the team's locker room with a broad grin.

 

Phillips went 4-for-4 at the plate Wednesday night, coming up a homer short of the cycle and reaching base in each of his four at-bats. He looked every bit the player who was rated in July by Baseball America as the No. 21 prospect in the minors.

 

In the span of one game, he raised his batting average with the Shuckers from .222 to .300.

 

The 21-year-old from Seminole, Fla., credited that quick turnaround to help he received from Biloxi hitting coach Sandy Guerrero.

 

"We just slowed everything down," Phillips said. "Sandy told me to just think contact. When you're trying to do too much, you're trying to hit home runs and stuff. I just had to slow it down and make contact. That's all that was going through my head tonight, make contact.

 

"I had success tonight, but it's the game of baseball. I've got to come back tomorrow and do it again."

 

Phillips was acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers on July 30 after the team sent former All-Star outfielder Carlos Gomez and relief pitcher Mike Fiers to the Houston Astros.

 

Phillips was sent to the Brewers along with two other pitchers who are now on the Shuckers' roster, right-hander Adrian Houser and lefty Josh Hader.

 

"I had been on the trading block the whole month of July," Phillips said. "Every article that came out had 'If you want to make a trade with Houston, Phillips is going to have to be in it.' That's basically what I saw. I put it in the back of my head and I had to play the game the way I play. I play hard. I just put that behind me. Now that I'm traded, I'll play for my new team and help this team win a championship."

 

Phillips was instantly inserted at the top of the lineup for the Shuckers, filling a role that had been shared by several players for the last couple of months.

 

Entering Thursday night's game, Phillips led all minor leaguers with a total of 99 runs scored this season.

 

While that run total is the envy of any leadoff hitter, there's a chance that Phillips' role could change in the future. He has a total of 16 homers hit this season and 33 over the last two years.

 

Biloxi manager Carlos Subero believes those power numbers could eventually push Phillips further down the order.

 

"He's always been a leadoff hitter, but it's very debatable," Subero said. "He's a kid that you can get in the two-hole or three-hole and see what he does with runners in scoring position."

 

With Phillips batting first and Milwaukee's top prospect, shortstop Orlando Arcia, batting second, the future of a struggling Brewers franchise may be situated at the top of the batting order in Biloxi at the moment.

 

Both players will be fighting for roster spots in Milwaukee by spring next year.

 

There are areas where Phillips still has to improve before he gets the call up to the big leagues.

 

He has stolen 51 bases as a pro, but he's been thrown out 32 times.

 

"That's something I'm working on and getting better at," Phillips said.

 

Once he perfects his craft on the base paths, Phillips can draw closer to that five-tool player label.

 

"It's too early to say (whether he's a five-tool player)," Subero said. "He's got a tremendous arm. He really has a great arm and he can cover ground. He can run, he can hit and he seems to have some pull-side pop. He's definitely close to a five-tool player. Hopefully, he continues to make strides."

Sky Sox split with Round Rock

 

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Sky Sox put three tough losses behind them with a 9-2 dismantling of the Round Rock Express to split Thursday evening’s double header before a crowd of 7,231 at Dell Diamond.

 

The Sky Sox offense would jump all over Express starter Jimmy Reyes (5-3, 2.48), tagging the left-hander for five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks in his only two innings of work. Colorado Springs opened the game with three straight singles from the top of the order with the last being of the RBI variety off the bat of Domingo Santana to give the visitors a quick 1-0 lead. After a Matt Clark flyout, Nevin Ashley drilled a two-run double to left to extend the early advantage to 3-0.

 

Santana drove in Kyle Wren for the second time with a one-out RBI single in the second before Ashley followed through with his third RBI of the game with a two-out knock. The second inning saw Colorado Springs extend their lead to 4-0 with spot-starter Rob Wooten turning in an excellent performance on the other side. The right-hander tossed three hitless frames to start the seven-inning contest, striking out four Express hitters along the way.

 

Ashley continued his monster game with a two-run blast off of left-hander Will Lamb in the Sox fourth. The catcher’s seventh long ball of the season gave him five RBI on the night and the Sox a 7-0 lead after four.

 

 

Matt Dominguez added a solo shot in the fifth to leadoff the frame against left-hander Alex Claudio, extending the lead to 8-0 before Round Rock broke through for their first run in the following frame.

 

Preston Guilmet (2-0, 2.70) allowed one run over two innings of work on two fifth-inning walks followed by an RBI single off the bat of Patrick Cantwell. The right-hander would be the benefactor of the win as Wooten’s three-inning start could not qualify.

 

The Sox got to Claudio for one more run in the sixth as Luis Sardinas scampered home on a wild pitch with two out and Ashley at the plate. Claudio would quiet Ashley’s bat to end the frame with Colorado Springs holding a 9-1 lead.

 

The Sox held that lead until slugging-prospect Joey Gallo led off the Express seventh with his 13th long ball of the season against newly implanted reliever Jim Henderson. The right-handed veteran would settle down immediately, retiring the next three batters to secure a 9-2 win in Round Rock. Colorado Springs improves to 49-69 with the win while dropping the Express to 68-51 on the season.

 

 

The Sky Sox will look to close out their 10-day, 11-game road trip with a win on Friday night in Round Rock as they take on these same Express in their series-finale. Hiram Burgos (2-2, 3.09) will lead the way for Colorado Springs with Round Rock’s starter to be named. First pitch is slated for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) from Dell Diamond.

The second night of doubleheader action at Dell Diamond provided the Round Rock Express (68-51) with a walk-off game one victory, 4-3, and a tough game two loss to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (49-69), 9-2.

 

The Sky Sox bats showed life in the third inning of game one as 3B Matt Dominguez lined a single off Express starter Anthony Ranaudo. Ranaudo froze Dominguez with a fly out, but saw him advance on a ground out to put a man on second with two away. Sky Sox CF Kyle Wren delivered the first run of the doubleheader with an RBI single to center field, putting Colorado Springs ahead 1-0. Ranaudo crafted another fly out to end the inning.

 

Round Rock answered in the home half of the third thanks to a lead-off double from C Brett Nicholas. Nicholas made his way to third on a ground out, beckoning CF Jared Hoying to the plate with one on and one out. Hoying ripped a triple off Colorado Springs starter Brent Suter, easily scoring Nicholas to even the contest at one. SS Hanser Alberto broke the tie with his fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot that sent the E-Train in front 3-1.

 

Ranaudo (7-3, 3.67) saw his night come to a close after throwing shutout fourth and fifth innings with 5.0 innings pitched, four hits, one run (earned) and two walks. Suter (1-0, 2.38) went one out longer than his counterpart with 5.1 innings under his belt, seven hits, three runs (three earned), one walk and four Ks.

 

Colorado Springs scored in both the sixth and seventh to tie the game at three as RHP Roman Mendez gave up an RBI double (Domingo Santana) and RBI single (Matt Long), forcing Round Rock to score in the bottom of the seventh to avoid extra innings.

 

 

Sky Sox reliever Jaye Chapman took the helm from Suter and recorded a ground out to start the bottom of the seventh. The righty then issued a walk to RF Leonys Martin, but recovered with a pop out to put two in his pocket. Martin stole second with 1B Ryan Rua batting to place the go-ahead run in scoring position. Game one took a turn for the strange as Rua popped up a high fly ball to Sky Sox LF Domingo Santana who lost concentration and mishandled the final out, allowing Martin to score and give Round Rock its second straight walk-off victory, 4-3.
