The Brewers won their third straight, defeating the Marlins 3-2. Rodrigo Benoit started and nearly went the distance, working in to the ninth inning. He allowed two runs in 8.1 innings, improving to 5-1 on the season. Juan Diaz came on in the ninth and got the final two outs to pick up his fourth save.

 

Franly Mallen, who has been on fire at the plate lately, extended his hitting streak to nine games. He reached base in four of his five plate appearances with a walk two singles and a double and is 10-for-19 over his last five games. Anderson Jesus and Nicol Valderrey each had two hits while Jay Feliciano added a triple. 18-year-old Puerto Rican outfielder Bryan Torres made his Brewers debut, going 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.

BILOXI, MS – For the first time since July 9, the Biloxi Shuckers took the opener of a series with a 4-1 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 1,955 at MGM Park. Biloxi starting pitcher Jorge Lopez turned in his 13th quality start, tossing eight shutout innings and Brett Phillips reached base safely five times Wednesday, finishing 4-for-4, a homer shy of the cycle.

 

Lopez (11-5) made his 21st start of the season and hit the ground running, as the 22-year-old worked around two base runners in the first before striking out the side. The Puerto Rico native shut down the Blue Wahoos’ offense, allowing just four hits over eight shutout innings, walking two, while striking out eight on 107 pitches. The eight innings matched a season and career-high.

 

Biloxi (22-23) rallied with two outs in the second to score the first run of the game. After fly outs by Taylor Green (0x4) and Tyrone Taylor (0x3, BB), Adam Weisenburger (2x3, RBI, R, BB) drew a walk and moved over to third on a single by Lopez. Phillips started his hot night at the plate, following with a hard-hit double to right to bring home Weisenburger.

 

The Shuckers were back at it in the third to expand their lead to three. Nathan Orf (1x3, R, BB) started the frame with a single and came all the way around to score on Nick Ramirez’s (1x4, RBI, R, 2B) two-bagger to center. A free pass to Victor Roache (2x3, RBI BB) put two on, and Weisenburger came up with a run-scoring knock to right, plating Ramirez for the three-run advantage.

 

Phillips smacked a fly ball into right that missed the glove of a diving Juan Duran and rolled all the way to the wall for a leadoff triple in the fourth. Roache drove Phillips home two outs later to open up the Shuckers’ lead to four.

 

With just a homerun to go for the cycle in his final at-bat, Phillips stepped up to the plate in the eighth and singled into right to finish the night with a perfect, 4-for-4 performance, raising his average to .300 since joining the Shuckers. The 21-year-old tied team highs with four hits in a game and four consecutive plate appearances with a hit.

 

Pensacola (26-20) broke up the shutout in the ninth on Jesse Winker’s 10th homerun of the season to start the final inning against Manny Barreda (IP, R, H, BB, SO).

 

Biloxi will look for a two-game lead in the five-game set on Thursday night. RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, 3.27) will make his third start as a member of the Shuckers, while RHP Sal Romano (0-0, 9.64) seeks his first win at the Double-A level for the Blue Wahoos. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. ...But Lopez managed to keep his focus on the mound before fading in the second half. He throws his fastball in the 90-94 mph range with good movement. He has a nice, easy delivery and good sink on his two-seamer. His improved curveball has become a solid-average secondary pitch at 75-78 mph with good bite. Lopez's changeup remains a work in progress, but he is not afraid to use it. Lopez took a step forward and continues to profile as a possible back-end starter in the big leagues. He likely will be assigned to Double-A Biloxi.But Lopez managed to keep his focus on the mound before fading in the second half. He throws his fastball in the 90-94 mph range with good movement. Whitecaps crash in on Wisconsin

Rattlers lose late lead and fall 3-2 in 11 innings

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The West Michigan Whitecaps spoiled a pretty good party at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Wednesday night. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had a 2-0 lead on the Whitecaps heading into the ninth inning in front of 6,931 fans, the biggest home crowd of the season for Wisconsin. But, West Michigan would win the game 3-2 in eleven innings.

 

Wisconsin starting pitcher Kodi Medeiros worked just three innings, but made them count as he retired all nine batters he faced. Medeiros struck out four in his three frames.

 

The Timber Rattlers (39-75 overall, 16-28 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of unearned runs. Tucker Neuhaus reached on an error to start the inning. Mitch Meyer drove in Neuhaus with a one-out triple to right. Alan Sharkey caught the Whitecaps by surprise with a two-out bunt single to drive in Meyer and the Rattlers were up 2-0.

 

Angel Ventura took over for Medeiros in the top of the fourth inning and kept the Whitecaps (58-55, 25-19) in check through the eighth inning. But, things got rough in the ninth.

 

David Gonzalez, the number nine hitter in the West Michigan lineup, got jammed by Ventura, but reached on an infield single. Rashad Brown was next and he tripled to knock in Gonzalez. Ventura struck out the next two batters to keep Brown at third as the tying run. However, Ventura hit Kade Scivicque and walked Christin Steward to load the bases.

 

Ventura threw a wild pitch with Ross Kivett at the plate to allow Brown to score the tying run.

 

The Whitecaps took their first lead of the game in the eleventh inning against reliever Gian Rizzo. Mike Gerber was at second base with one out and Scivicque lined a single to center, but Gerber rounded third base too far and got caught in a rundown, but he stayed in the pickle long enough for Scivicque to take second base. Stewart one-hopped the wall in right on an 0-1 pitch for an RBI double to knock in Scivicque with the run to make it 3-2.

 

Elvis Rubio drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the eleventh to bring the winning run to the plate, but Dominic Moreno struck out the last two hitters to nail down the win for the Whitecaps.

 

The final game of the series is Thursday night. Josh Uhen (1-2, 5.56) is the scheduled to make his first start of the season for the Timber Rattlers. West Michigan will send Spencer Turnbull (9-3, 3.18) to the mound. Game time is 7:05pm.

 

The first 1,000 fans to enter the stadium for this game will receive a bobblehead of Timber Rattlers mascot Fang in a Corvette Stingray courtesy of Bergstrom Automotive. There will be a display of emergency vehicles from area municipal service departments. Plus, Valley Vettes will have a display of a seven classic Corvettes for fans to check out on their way into the ballpark. A 95.9 KISS-FM Thirsty Thursday means 16oz soda, beer, and Arty's Old Fashioned drinks are available for just $2.

I knew the crowd was going to be large tonight when I tried to buy tickets earlier in the week and only grass seats were available, almost 7,000 is fantastic! The downside of course is that I still want to get Ventura on the gun and I'm likely down to 1 opportunity on the next home stand to do so.

 

Kodi Medeiros was very good and lowered his ERA under 4 for the time since April. Angel Ventura was rolling until whatever happened in the 9th... this one hurt a little...

 

With Carlos Leal back to the DL the highest BA the Rattlers could muster in today's line-up was .244... 244! Still a very winnable game that got away.

Woodruff's Gem Snaps Losing Streak

Tampa, FL -The Brevard County Manatees (19-25, 48-65 overall) were able to get back into the win column on Wednesday night thanks to an outstanding effort from their pitching staff to defeat the Tampa Yankees (22-24, 56-60 overall) 1-0 at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

 

The game's lone run came in the top of the second inning, which was kick started by a Garrett Cooper base hit. Robinzon Diaz followed with a base hit of his own to move Cooper to second. After Taylor Brennan struck out, Dustin Houle laced a single to left that brought home Cooper with Diaz eventually being tagged out in a run down between second and third.

 

That would be all that was needed as Brandon Woodruff and Preston Gainey combined to keep the Yankees off the board for the night. Tampa would have one runner reach third base, which came with two out in the ninth when Houle's throw to second to throw out Abiatal Avelino went wide. Gainey made sure the error was of little consequence when he got Miguel Andujar to fly out to center to end it.

 

Woodruff turned in his best start of the season throwing seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits, striking out four and walking one on 89 pitches. Gainey give up one hit and struck out three in two innings of work to nail down his sixth save of the season. Offensively, the Manatees got multi-hit games from Cooper and Chris McFarland.

 

The victory ensured that Brevard County won the season series with Tampa, ten games to eight.

 

The Manatees return home on Thursday to begin a three-game series with the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (8-4, 3.91 ERA) will get the start against LHP Alonzo Gonzalez (2-3, 2.86 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Brandon Woodruff the star tonight. He had a 10/4 GO/FO in addition to the stats mentioned in the story. Preston Gainey had his best outing in quite a while also throwing 21 strikes in 25 pitches. Garrett Cooper flirting with .300 continues to have a good year and Dustin Houle hitting .300 as he continues to hit well.

Phillips nearly hits for cycle for Shuckers

Brewers No. 2 prospect goes 4-for-4 for second time in two weeks

Everything about Brett Phillips' situation is new, but he was the same old player on Wednesday night.

 

The Brewers' new No. 2 prospect went 4-for-4, reached base five times, drove in one run, scored another and fell a homer shy of the cycle in Double-A Biloxi's 4-1 win over visiting Pensacola.

 

"It feels great, definitely, after struggling quite a bit since I've been here," said Phillips, who came over in the July 30 trade that sent Carlos Gomez to Houston. "I slowed things down tonight. I've been working with hitting coach Sandy Guerrero. Maybe in the beginning, I was trying to do too much, but I've settled down and been swinging at good pitches to hit."

 

The 21-year-old outfielder also had four hits in his final game in the Texas League before the trade. In 109 games across two levels, he's batting .318 with a Minor League-leading 99 runs scored.

 

Phillips has hit safely in four straight games and boosted his Southern League average to .300 after starting out 2-for-10.

 

"It's an adjustment for sure," Philips said. "It's getting called up to a different level. It takes a little bit to get adjusted. In this case, after a trade, I'm meeting all new teammates who are great guys, but it's an adjustment to make on and off the field. It's my first time seeing these pitchers, too. But I'm settling in and getting a feel for it."

 

It showed from the outset on Wednesday. Facing Blue Wahoos starter Daniel Wright in his first three plate appearances, Phillips walked in the opening inning, socked an RBI double to right in the second and again sent right fielder Juan Duran on the run with a line drive in the fourth.

 

"The right fielder dove for it and missed it, so I was cruising around the bases," said Phillips, a left-handed hitter. "Once I saw Duran dive and the ball go past his glove, I turned it on. I knew I was going to be standing up at third."

 

 

And Phillips immediately realized he might be having a special night.

 

"You get some confidence going," he said. "After the double and the triple, you already have a good night, but you want to keep it going. You're never satisfied. You bring that confidence into the next at-bats and the night ends up being a great night."

 

The 2012 sixth-rounder singled up the middle against Wandy Peralta leading off the sixth and, when he stepped into the box with no outs and one on in the eighth against reliever Kyle McMyne, it wasn't lost on Phillips that he was a homer away from an historic night.

 

"It's been the same story for me when it comes to hitting for the cycle," he said. "I've yet to do it, but I've been close several times -- always a hit away from the cycle.

 

"I had a 3-1 count and I swung at a ball I could have [taken], but I swung at it. I look over at the dugout, and guys are applauding me for swinging at a ball because they want to see me hit for the cycle. But on 3-2, I got a great pitch and was able to line it into right field for a single."

 

 

Phillips' big night came in support of ninth-ranked Brewers prospect Jorge Lopez (11-5), who allowed four hits and two walks while fanning eight over eight scoreless innings.

 

"He absolutely dealt. It was an amazing performance," Phillips said. "He had a good tempo and he was getting ahead in counts. He was throwing his curve for strikes. That's big wherever you are.

 

"He was getting ahead, but even when he fell behind hitters, he was able to spot a fastball and they'd foul it off and it would go to 2-1. He'd throw the curve for a strike and that's 2-2 right there. If he's got two strikes, he's almost already got [the batter] out. He was that good tonight."

 

Lopez shares the league lead in wins and ranks second with a 2.45 ERA and 119 strikeouts.

 

Top Reds prospect Jesse Winker homered for a second straight game for the Blue Wahoos, going 2-for-4 to get his average up to .271.

Brett Phillips, Jorge Lopez have huge nights as Shuckers roll, 4-1

BILOXI – After a slow start with the Shuckers, Brett Phillips showed Wednesday night why he's considered one of the best prospects in all of minor league baseball.

 

The centerfielder finished 4-of-4 at the plate, including a double and a triple, in a 4-1 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. He also had a first-inning walk to reach base in all five of his at-bats.

 

He stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth knowing he could achieve the cycle with a homer.

 

Phillips admitted he was hoping to clear the right field fence in his final at-bat, but instead settled for a single to right.

 

“That's been the story of my cycle career,” Phillips said. “I have yet to hit one, but I've been close several times with one hit away - a single, double, triple or homer. I'm always one away. I was definitely thinking about it.”

 

Phillips had by far his best game as a Shucker, tying the team record for hits in a game. He did it in front of his girlfriend and mom who traveled in to watch Wednesday's game.

 

“It was fun putting on a show for them,” Phillips said.

 

Phillips was by no means the only star to shine Wednesday night for Biloxi.

 

Jorge Lopez put in another stellar pitching performance to improve his record to 11-5, including 8-3 in his last 11 starts. He is tied with Birmingham's Myles Jaye for the Southern League lead in victories.

 

A night after the Shuckers' pitchers took a pounding in a 10-3 loss to the Mississippi Braves, Lopez held the Blue Wahoos scoreless in eight innings. He struck out eight and walked two, allowing four hits in front of a crowd of 1,955.

 

“That's what I expect out of him. Not eight innings of shutout baseball, but that quality of pitching” said Biloxi catcher Adam Weisenburger, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate. “(Lopez) has been impressive. Early on, he struggled a little bit in terms of Jorge's standards, but he kicked it up a notch in the third or fourth inning and really took control of the game.”

 

After allowing three hits in the first two innings, Lopez gave up just one over the next six to push his number of quality starts on the season to 13.

 

That consistency is drawing the praise of Biloxi manager Carlos Subero.

 

“It tells you that he keeps closing the gap between here and the next level,” Subero said of Lopez. “Every time out there, even when he struggles, he does something that tells you not only about his physical talent, but his maturity. He keeps closing the gap.”

 

Victor Roache joined Weisenburger and Phillips as Shuckers with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

 

Phillips ripped an RBI double to right field in the second inning to start the scoring in game one of a five-game home series against the Blue Wahoos.

 

Nick Ramirez drove an RBI double to left center in the bottom of the third to give the Shuckers a 2-0 lead and Weisenburger pushed the advantage to 3-0 later in the inning with a two-out, RBI single through the right side of the infield.

 

Phillips, who entered the game batting .222 with Biloxi, began the fourth with a triple that made its way under the glove of Pensacola right fielder Juan Duran. He later scored on a Roache single to give the Shuckers a 4-0 lead.

 

Phillips, who was recently acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade with the Houston Astros, raised his batting average to .300 with the Shuckers on Wednesday.

 

Phillips was all smiles outside the locker room after the game.

 

“It feels great,” he said. “Starting off with Lopez, he pitched a great game tonight. Hats off to him. We had timely hitting as well. Tonight was a great team win. Lopez pitched his butt off tonight. That was an awesome eight innings. It feels great to get some hits.”

Raptors sweep the Brewers

The Helena Brewers (3-10) lost their third extra-inning contest this week, and for the ninth time in their last ten home games, falling 6-4 to the Ogden Raptors (7-6) in 12 innings.

 

The Raptors would score four runs in the second to open the scoring. Chris Godinez, Deion Ulmer, and Logan Landon each came up with RBI singles in the inning off Conor Harber. Harber would pitch just two innings, giving up four runs on three hits and striking out two.

 

Bubba Blau, J.B. Kole, and Alex Farina (0-2) then combined to shut out the Raptors over the next nine innings.

 

Trailing 4-1 going to the eighth, the Brewers would load the bases on three walks by reliever Corey Copping. Mitch Ghelfi then came up with two outs and cranked a three-RBI double to right-center field.

 

The Brewers' bats went silent after that, however, coming up with just one hit the rest of the way.

 

Matt Jones hit a two-RBI single for the Raptors in the top of the 12th off Farina to complete the win.

 

It was the third time in the week that Helena would lose in extras. They are now 2-3 on the season past regulation.

 

The Brewers now head to Idaho Falls to start a three-game series with the Chukars. First pitch on Friday from Melaleuca Field is set for 7:15 PM (8:15 Central).
