As per some tweets with Adam Rygg from last evening, the Brewers have signed RHP Jack Finnegan, a 6'2", 175 21-year-old out of McLennan Junior College in Texas (stats). Finnegan pitched well for Falmouth in the Cape Cod League this summer (stats).

 

He also pitched well at the JUCO World Series in Colorado this summer.

Yankees Defeat Manatees in Offensive Outburst, 11-7

Tampa Smacks 15 Hits as Brevard County Drops Fifth Straight

 

Tampa, FL – The Tampa Yankees’ (22-23, 56-59 overall) offense dominated in an 11-7 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (18-25, 47-65 overall) on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

 

The Yankees took the lead early with five runs in the first two frames. Four straight walks by Johnny Hellweg, including one to Miguel Andujar with the bases loaded, forced home the first run of the game. Hellweg then uncorked a wild pitch to make it 2-0 after the first. Jorge Mateo smacked a two-run double in the second. Later in the frame, Mike Ford doubled home a run to make it 5-0, Tampa.

 

The Manatees got on the board in the fourth. With one out, Chris McFarland reached on a fielding error by Ford. Two batters later, Garrett Cooper drilled his 30th double of the season and plated McFarland.

 

Ford smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to give Tampa a 7-1 advantage.

 

Hellweg (1-4, 7.50 ERA) struggled in the loss. In four innings, he surrendered seven runs – four earned – on six hits and four walks. He struck out five.

 

Zach Hirsch came on in relief for the fifth, but surrendered four runs. Ericson Leonora and Mateo hit RBI singles. Dustin Fowler drove home a pair with a single to center and made it 9-1, Yankees.

 

Brevard County battled back with a six-run sixth. Omar Garcia singled to right field to lead off the frame. McFarland then singled to center. With runners on the corners, Clint Coulter lined a double to left field. Garcia scored and McFarland went to third. Coulter was the final batter that Tampa starter Vicente Campos faced. Manolo Reyes came on in relief. With Cooper batting, Reyes threw a wild pitch and allowed McFarland to score. Reyes then issued a walk to Cooper. Two batters later, Taylor Brennan drove in a run with a fielder’s choice to short. After a Rafael Neda double, Michael Ratterree walked to load the bases. Angel Ortega grounded a two-run single to right field to cut the deficit to five. Another Reyes wild pitch plated the sixth run of the inning.

 

Leonora drilled an RBI double to center in the bottom of the sixth to complete the game’s scoring.

 

Stephen Peterson tossed two shutout innings for the Manatees and struck out four.

 

Campos (2-5, 6.21 ERA) earned the win. He allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits and fanned six.

 

Angel Rincon threw the final three innings and did not allow a run to notch his eighth save of the season.

 

The Manatees and Yankees will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-5, 4.39 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. Tampa will send LHP Chaz Hebert (6-5, 3.39 ERA) to the bump.

The Brewers scored ten runs in the first four innings as they beat the Tigers 10-4. Junior Flores started but lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing two runs. 19-year-old Joaquin De La Cruz came on in relief of Flores and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to get the win. Left fielder Jay Feliciano came just a home run shy of a cycle, going 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple. Shortstop Franly Mallen reached base five times, collecting a single, triple, hit-by-pitch and two walks. First baseman Nicol Valderrey and catcher Sandy Martinez each chipped in a single and a double and right fielder Anderson Jesus went 1-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in. Jesus also recorded an outfield assist before being replaced in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Starter Hobbs Johnson issued his third quality start on Tuesday night in the 10-3 loss (M.K. Krebs)

 

BILOXI, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers dropped their second consecutive rubber match with a 10-3 loss to the Mississippi Braves in front of a crowd of 1,990 at MGM Park on Tuesday evening. The series defeat is the second time the Shuckers have fallen in back-to-back series in their inaugural season, and first since losing to the Braves and Jackson Generals from May 6 to the 15.

 

The M-Braves blasted three more home runs, giving the Atlanta Braves' affiliate 11 in eight games at MGM Park, 35% over their season total of 31, in 113 games.

 

Despite the loss, the Shuckers maintain a 10-8 lead in the Magnolia State series and will play five more games at Trustmark Park, August 28 through September 1. Biloxi trails the M-Braves and Pensacola Blue Wahoos by 4.5 games with 25 games to play, including 15 with teams in front of them in the standings.

 

Biloxi (21-23) jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first. Brett Phillips (1x4, 2 R, 2B, BB, SB) started the inning with a walk, swiped second for his first stolen base as a Shucker and advanced to third on an errant throw by catcher Braeden Schleheuber. Nathan Orf (2x4, 2 RBI, R, 2B) brought the runner home with a liner to right go put the home team ahead, 1-0.

 

Mississippi (27-19) grabbed the lead in the fourth after Levi Hyams walked to start the frame. A single by Kevin Ahrens and a walk to KD Kang loaded the bases with nobody out for the Braves.

 

Hobbs Johnson (7-6) struck out Sean Godfrey for the first out of the inning, but Rio Ruiz tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center. Schleheuber doubled to center to bring home Ahrens and Kang, putting the Shuckers in a 3-1 hole.

 

The southpaw picked up his third quality start of the season by working the minimum six innings, and allowing the maximum of three runs. The North Carolina alum walked five and struck out four in his 21st start of the season.

 

The score stayed the same into the seventh until Mississippi again broke out the long ball, lifting two homeruns off of reliever Martin Viramontes (IP, 4 R, 4 H) for four runs to extend the Shuckers' deficit to six.

 

Drew Gagnon (2.0 IP, 3 R, 3 H, BB, 4 SO) made his second appearance since being transferred to Biloxi in the eighth, and the Braves greeted him with a three-run shot off the bat of Matt Lipka to increase the lead to 10-1.

 

Mississippi came into the series with just 23 homeruns as a team coming into the five-game set, and ended up hitting eight in the five games against Biloxi at MGM Park.

 

The Shuckers used three doubles in the home-half of the eighth to bring in two runs and cut into the Braves' lead. Phillips started things off with a double. Two batters later, Orf drove in his second run of the game with the second double of the inning for Biloxi. Victor Roache (2x3, RBI, 2B, BB) drove in Orf with a double to center to bring the Shuckers within 10-3.

 

Biloxi welcomes the Pensacola Blue Wahoos to MGM Park for the first time ever to start a five-game series beginning on Wednesday. RHP Jorge Lopez (10-5, 2.62) will start the opener for the Shuckers, while the Blue Wahoos send out Daniel Wright (8-8, 4.62). First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Rattlers beat West Michigan 5-3 to start homestand right

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers began their six-game homestand with a 5-3 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Blake Allemand and Tucker Neuhaus each drove in a pair of runs for Wisconsin.

 

The Timber Rattlers (39-74 overall, 16-27 second half) started the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Francisco Castillo began the rally with a leadoff single. Allemand, the 5th round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 draft, was next and he hit a deep drive to right that cleared the fence for a two-run homer. The home run was Allemand's first as a professional and gave the Rattlers a 2-0 lead.

 

Whitecaps starting pitcher Ross Seaton got the next two batters, but had trouble finding the third out. Greg McCall doubled to keep the inning alive. Sthervin Matos delivered a single to left that knocked in McCall. Matos would steal second before scoring on a single to center by Neuhaus to make it 4-0.

 

Tuesday night's first inning rally snapped a streak of eleven straight games in which Wisconsin's opponents scored first.

 

West Michigan (57-55, 24-19) tallied two runs after two outs in the top of the third. Mike Gerber doubled to reach base with two away. Kade Scivicque followed with a single to knock in Gerber. Christin Stewart kept the inning going with another single. Joey Pankake drove in Scivicque with a broken-bat single and the score was 4-2.

 

Neuhaus gave the Rattlers a little insurance in the bottom of the sixth. Sthervin Matos reached base when he was hit by a pitch with two outs and took second base on a passed ball. Neuhaus pulled a double into the corner in right and Matos scored for a 5-2 lead.

 

The Whitecaps got a run in the top of the seventh against reliever Scott Lieser. David Gonzalez and Ross Kivet singled with no outs to put runners on the corners. Gerber sent Gonzalez home with a sacrifice fly but that would be as close as West Michigan would get.

 

Luke Curtis entered the game in the top of the eighth inning to replace Lieser and would retire all six batters he faced to close out the game and earn his fifth save of the season.

 

Game two of the series is Wednesday night. Kodi Medeiros (4-2, 4.09) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Artie Lewicki (1-3, 3.96) is set to start for the Whitecaps. Game time is 7:05pm.

 

The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a poster of Cody Ponce, Timber Rattlers pitcher and Milwaukee Brewers 2nd round pick in the 2015 draft, courtesy of Dunkin Donuts. This is poster eight in a series of ten that are being given away this season. There will be a school bus in front of the stadium and Timber Rattlers fans are invited to bring in school supplies as a donation to Stuff the Bus. Supplies that are collected will be sent to area children in need.

 

Fans may enjoy Cher-Make hotdogs, Pepsi products, and Miller beer for $1 during the game as part of WIXX Bang for Your Buck Night! Stay after the final out to enjoy a midweek fireworks display courtesy of Thrivent.

Jon Perrin has an interesting start to his professional career, 1 truly horrible start is still skewing his entire line. Chris mentioned it again and it occurred to me that maybe I hadn't passed it along previous, but Scott Lieser has a much different delivery than he did when he first arrived with the T-Rats. His extreme leg kick is gone and he's much simplified to better results.

After looking at that would you believe he's had 2 of the longest hitting streaks for the Rattlers this year? He's been a tough one to figure out.

 

Mr. Do Everything Francisco Castillo (2-4) also had a nice game at the plate, he's played 5 positions rather well for the Rattlers this season but just the 1 game in RF.

Brewers shut out 9-0

The Helena Brewers (3-9) were shut out for the second time this season on Tuesday, falling 9-0 to the Ogden Raptors (6-6) at Kindrick Field. The Brewers have scored just two runs over their last 20 offensive innings.

 

Ogden jumped on the board in the top of the first, scoring one run on two hits off Milton Gomez (2-2). Logan Landon led off with a walk and scored later on the RBI single of Alex Santana. Gomez gave up five runs in four innings.

 

Michael Boyles (2-1) was outstanding in the start for Ogden, striking out six batters and giving up two hits in his five innings. It was just the second time this season he has gone that deep into a game.

 

Helena tied their season-low for hits in a game, coming up with just two. Troy Stokes and Carlos Belonis singled in the second and third, respectively. Belonis would account for two of Helena's five baserunners on Tuesday.

 

The Raptors posted four runs in both the fourth and seventh innings. The Brewers have now given up at least four runs in an inning on six consecutive nights.

 

Gage Green led the Ogden offense on a 3-for-5 night. He added two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.

 

Junior Rincon finished the game strong for Helena, striking out four in two innings of perfect relief. He would strike out the side in the ninth.

 

The Brewers and Raptors will face off in the finale of their three-game series Wednesday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Nice debut for RHP Jack Finnegan (3 IP, 1 R), and RHP David Lucroy induced a sweet eight ground ball outs and three K's in his four innings, but was still a bit too hittable. The White Sox didn't make a fly ball out until the 8th inning, actually.

Definitely much more respectable lately...

 

The Sky Sox haven't posted a game summary, here are a few notes combined from the Gazette and the Statesman (away and home) --

 

Round Rock, Texas - Late-inning theatrics caused the Round Rock Express to drop the series opener against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 7-5. Round Rock's offense was unable to sustain its early momentum and a 5-2 lead and went completely silent over the remaining seven innings. Matt Clark homered for the Sky Sox in the fifth.

 

The contest turned on a dime with the arrival of Express righty Ross Ohlendorf who took the reins from southpaw Jimmy Reyes to start the eighth. Ohlendorf began the frame with a walk, but gathered the next two outs in successive order. A Clark single put runners on first and second. Luis Sardinas came up next and was immediately impactful as the DH propelled his first homer of the season to put the Sky Sox in front 6-5.

 

The Sky Sox padded their lead with an RBI single from Nevin Ashley in the ninth.

 

Round Rock and Colorado Springs continue the series Wednesday night with the first of back-to-back doubleheaders, starting at 5:05 PM. Express RHP Phil Irwin (1-1, 9.00) takes on Sky Sox RHP Josh Roenicke (6-8, 5.23) in game one, while both pitchers for game two are still to be announced.

Matt Clark was on base five times with this unique line (HR, 3 BB's, HBP). His OBP is now .343.

 

Despite all the great photos, Michael Reed was 0-for-5 on the night.

 

Even after posting all these Sky Sox summaries, hadn't realized Luis Sardinas was homerless until the big knock Tuesday night.

 

LF Domingo Santana was 0-for-4 with a walk and stolen base.
