2007 Draft Resource Thread

Movement near the top

I'm at the airport waiting to go to Orlando for the big day and wanted to report on some movement near the top of the draft.

Not at No. 1 -- that's going to be David Price as expected. I'm talking at No. 2. I've learned the Kansas City Royals will most likely not take Rick Porcello with that selection and instead will go with a high school bat from California.

They've got two guys even on their board: Cypress High School's Josh Vitters and Chatsworth High's Mike Moustakas. It could go either way, with KC valuing both equally. The ball is in the players' courts. Whichever player shows the Royals he wants to join their organization is likely to be the direction the Royals go in.

As for Porcello, his ability is not in question. He's good enough to go No. 2 and there are even some scouts who'd consider taking him No. 1. But his bonus demands, especially for a high school right-handed pitcher -- the biggest risk pick there is -- could very well force him to slide really far...maybe even as far as the University of North Carolina...

Stay tuned as things heat up. Talk to everyone from Orlando!

Keith Law's latest mock has us taking Wieters with the comment "not a lock". Top alternatives Moustakas and Dominguez. Worst case all being gone and us taking Mesocora. I for one would be thrilled with this Wieters but like many others I highly doubt it. The HS catcher from Punxantoney seems to have Brewer pick written all over him, East coast late riser up the board, possible reach will turn out OK.

I'm feeling a Wieters - Boras induced drop to double digits.

I'm not an expert, but it seems that even though his clients drop they still get way more money than their position would indicate (per slot money). So his players drop to teams that already are better and richer so the teams like the cardinals, dodgers, cubs etc. who have the money end up getting better talent than teams like the Brewers, Royals, Pirates pass on better talent because of fears about asking price and end up giving the big wallet teams exactly what they want.

Well I think the Dodgers are "done" with him after the Hochevar mess, but often "big money" teams like the Cardinals and Mariners stay away from him too simply because they prefer spending their budgets on Major League players.

And I think the Cubs will pass after all the money they passed out this spring.

It's the Arizona/White Sox/Rangers of the worlds that often end up dancing with him.

We'll see if the new signing deadline has ANY effect whatsoever.

I agree, but I do think it's cyclical. The Dodgers will be back in a few years when the distaste from the Hochevar mess is mostly gone.

That will be interesting, but it doesn't seem like too many GMs are good at playing poker (well at least not as good as Boras at bluffing) so I see teams ending up panicking before Agents.
