From Tuesday's Sky Sox game --

 

With his team still leading 6-2, Iowa reliever Armando Rivero would take over in the ninth in hopes of closing out the Sox with a quick inning. The right-hander gave up a leadoff single to Domingo Santana before striking out Nevin Ashley and Dominguez consecutively to leave Colorado Springs with just one more out. Rivera extended the night with a base hit before Matt Long worked a walk to load the bases with two out, forcing Iowa manager Marty Pevey to make a call to the bullpen. I-Cubs closer Brian Schlitter took over with Kyle Wren coming to the plate for a potentially game-changing at-bat. The speedy outfielder would line Schlitter's offering off of the right-hander, allowing all three runners to score as the ball bounced into foul play in shallow right. The wacky, yet clutch, three-run double gave the Sox a chance at tying the game late with Luis Sardinas coming up. Unfortunately Sardinas would ground out to first to end the riveting contest, giving Iowa a 6-5 win.

21-year-old Rodrigo Benoit turned in his best start of the season, going the distance in a 6-0 shutout win over the Rangers. Benoit, who has gone at least six innings in each of his past seven starts, scattered four hits and struck out four without walking a batter to run his record to 4-1.

 

Right fielder Jay Feliciano belted his first home run of the season. He also walked and scored a pair of runs. First baseman Nicol Valderrey and designated hitter Javier Castillo each went 2-for-5. Second baseman Franly Mallen singled, walked and was hit by a pitch and catcher Sandy Martinez added a double.

Rattlers drop sixth straight game

LANSING, MI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers offense woke up late in their game with the Lansing Lugnuts on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium, but it was too late. The Timber Rattlers avoided a shutout with a ninth inning run and fell 2-1 to Lansing. The loss was the sixth straight for Wisconsin.

 

It didn't appear that the Timber Rattlers (36-72 overall, 13-25 second half) would have an issue with Lugnuts starting pitcher Clinton Hollon, who was making his Midwest League debut on Wednesday night. Alan Sharkey singled to start the game, but was picked off by Hollon. Blake Allemand drew a walk with one out, stole second with two outs, and Elvis Rubio drew a walk to put two runners on base. Hollon got out of the inning with a grounder.

 

That final out in the top of the first inning started a streak of nineteen straight Timber Rattlers retired by Hollon as he did not allow another base runner over his seven innings of work.

 

Lansing (63-46, 21-18) grabbed the lead in the second inning. DJ Davis tripled off the wall in right with one out. Dawel Lugo knocked in Davis with a sacrifice fly and the Lugnuts were up 1-0.

 

Juan Kelly started the Lansing third inning with a double. He beat the throw to third on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Austin Davis to put runners on the corners with no outs. Chris Carlos sent Kelly home with a sacrifice fly to right and the Lugnuts had a 2-0 lead.

 

The Lugnuts threatened to add to their lead in the fifth inning against starting pitcher Jon Perrin. Lugo tripled to start the inning, but Perrin stranded him at third base with a strikeout and a pair of grounders. Perrin allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. In his last two starts, Perrin has allowed three runs - two earned - over ten innings, but he is 0-2.

 

Nathan Kirby, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 40th selection of the 2015 draft, relieved for Jarrett Martin in the bottom of the seventh. Martin had tossed a perfect sixth inning in his Timber Rattlers debut, but Kirby gave up a pair of singles and a walk to the first three batters he faced in the seventh. Kirby would escape the jam with a 1-2-5 double play and a grounder back to the mound. He also pitched a scoreless eighth inning to keep the Rattlers within two runs.

 

Tucker Neuhaus singled with one out in the eighth inning against Lansing reliever Colton Turner for Wisconsin's first hit since Sharkey's leadoff single in the first. However, Neuhaus was erased on an inning-ending double play.

 

Turner retired the first two batters in the top of the ninth, but could not close out the game. Blake Allemand doubled to left-center to keep the inning alive. Carlos Leal extended his hitting streak to four games with an RBI single and pull the Rattlers to within a run.

 

Both teams made changes before Rubio got a chance to hit in the ninth. The Rattlers sent Omar Cotto to first as a pinch runner for Leal. The Lugnuts brought Carlos Ramirez into the game as a reliever for Turner.

 

Rubio worked the count full before drawing a walk against Ramirez and moving Cotto into scoring position with the tying run. But, Francisco Castillo grounded out to short on the first pitch of his at bat and the throw to first was in time to close out the game.

 

Wisconsin has been outscored 30-4 in their last six games.

 

The final game of the series is set for Thursday night. Angel Ventura (5-5, 3.20) is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers. Conor Fisk (2-2, 4.38) is set to start for the Lugnuts. Game time is 6:05pm CDT. The action may be heard on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm. The broadcast is also available on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

McFarland Smacks Walk-off Double in 12th

Viera, FL - Chris McFarland delivered with a walk-off, two-run double in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Brevard County Manatees (17-20, 46-60 overall) defeated the Tampa Yankees (18-21, 52-57) 5-4 on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

After Tampa took the lead in the top of the 12th inning, Angel Ortega worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the frame. Omar Garcia then singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. McFarland stepped up a drilled a two-run, game-winning double into the right-center field gap. It was McFarland's second walk-off hit of the season. He had a game-winning single on May 12 against Bradenton. It was the sixth walk-off victory of the season for the Manatees.

 

Brevard County originally took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Garcia singled on a liner to right-center field. McFarland then chopped a ball over the left side of the infield for a single. After Clint Coulter loaded the bases with a bloop single to right, Garrett Cooper walked to open the scoring. Robinzon Diaz then reached on a fielder's choice that plated McFarland.

 

Tampa got on the board in the second on an RBI single from Miguel Andujar.

 

Dustin Fowler launched a two-run home run against Brevard County starter Jorge Ortega in the third to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Ortega tossed 6.2 innings and surrendered three runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out four.

 

Brevard County tied the game on a sacrifice fly from Garrett Cooper in the sixth. Cooper finished with three hits, a double, a walk and an RBI.

 

The Brevard County bullpen dominated in the victory. The combination of Stephen Peterson, Kaleb Earls and Trevor Seidenberger allowed just one run on three hits in 5.1 innings. Seidenberger (4-1, 2.63 ERA) was credited with the victory after he recorded the final two outs in the top of the 12th.

 

Luis Niebla (1-5, 3.12 ERA) took the loss after he gave up the McFarland double in the bottom of the 12th inning.

 

The Manatees and Yankees will play the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow night. RHP Johnny Hellweg (0-3, 9.00 ERA) will get the start for Brevard County. Tampa will send RHP Vicente Campos (1-4, 7.15 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Jorge Ortega went about a week between starts as they are now trying to limit his innings. He wasn't quite as sharp as he usually is ending with: 6.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K, 9/5 GO/FO.

 

Omar Garcia and Chris McFarland had 2 hits each and Garrett Cooper, as mentioned in the story, was 3-4 (now batting .296). Rafael Neda, Taylor Brennan, Garrett Cooper and Chris McFarland each had a double. Yankee phenom Jorge Mateo stole his 72nd base of the season although this was his first game at this level.

MOBILE, AL – Victor Roache ended an 0-for-9 stretch with a bang on Wednesday night, driving in four runs, including his 16th organizational homer in the Shuckers’ 6-2 victory over the Mobile BayBears at Hank Aaron Stadium. The win brings Biloxi back to .500 in the second half (18-18) and forces a third-straight series rubber match on Thursday night.

 

For the first time this series, the Shuckers fell behind first after yielding a solo homerun in the second off the bat of Rudy Flores, falling into a 1-0 hole. That homer would be the only blip on Tyler Wagner’s line in his six innings of work. The Las Vegas, NV native, making his 19th start allowed one run on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts en route to his 14th quality start of the season and lowering his ERA to a league-best, 2.33.

 

Biloxi (18-18, 62-54) took the lead in the fourth and never looked back behind Roache’s (3x4, HR, 4 RBI, R) two-run blast to left that snapped an 0-for-9 to start the series, and scored Orlando Arcia (1x4, 2 R, 2B) for a 2-1 lead.

 

The Shuckers poured onto their lead in the sixth, sending nine batters to the plate in a four-run inning. Brett Phillips (1x4, R, 2B, BB) started the action with a walk and moved over to third on a double by Arcia, which was followed by a free pass to Nathan Orf (1x4, R, BB). Nick Ramirez (1x4, RBI, R, BB) walked to force in a run to give Biloxi a 3-1 edge. Roache drove in two more with a hard-hit single to center for a 5-1 advantage. A single by Brandon Macias (1x4) loaded the bases again for Tyrone Taylor (0x3, RBI), who’s sacrifice fly to left field brought home Ramirez to give the Shuckers a five-run lead. Arcia’s league-best 30th double extended his hitting streak to eight games. The 21-year-old is 13-for-29 over the streak.

 

Manny Barreda came on to work the seventh for Biloxi and hit the first batter he faced in Raul Navarro and walked Evan Marzilli before retiring the next three batters to escape the inning, unscathed.

 

Mobile added on a run in the eight with three consecutive singles by Zach Borenstein, Gabriel Guerrero and Flores to cut the Shuckers’ lead to four off of reliever Jacob Barnes.

 

Yhonathan Barrios closed the game out with a perfect ninth, collecting a called third strike to end the game.

 

Biloxi will look to take its third rubber match in as many series on Thursday night. Shuckers’ LHP Hobbs Johnson (7-4, 3.35) will face off against BayBears’ RHP John Omahen (5-0, 3.35). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Sky Sox get help in win

 

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Sky Sox snapped a four-game skid with a series-opening 6-2 win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers before a crowd of 4,257 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Wednesday night.

 

Starter Zach Davies made a strong first impression in his Sky Sox debut, allowing just one run on six hits and three walks while striking out seven Dodgers en route to picking up the win. OKC would pick up their lone run against the right-hander in the home fifth on an RBI single by top prospect Corey Seager. Davies would depart after six with the Sky Sox holding a then 6-1 lead.

 

The Colorado Springs offense was held scoreless through two by a righty/lefty combo of Carlos Frias and Daniel Coulombe before breaking through for the game’s first run in the third against Joe Wieland (7-5, 5.30). Pete Orr plated Yadiel Rivera with an RBI single after the shortstop led off the frame with a double.

 

The Sox would tag Wieland for three more runs in the fourth, stringing together four consecutive base hits to plate two before Rivera grounded into a run-scoring double play to extend the Sox lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Matt Dominguez’s double and Juan Centeno’s single accounted for the frame’s RBIs.

 

Wieland surrendered two more runs before his night was through on a fifth-inning RBI triple by Domingo Santana who scored two batters later when Dominguez reached on a fielding error by OKC third baseman Andy Wilkins. Santana celebrated his 23rd birthday with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in one. The right-handed Wieland would depart after the seventh having allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings of work.

 

The Dodgers scored their final run in the home seventh against Sox lefty Jeremy Horst. The reliever got two quick outs in his first inning of work before Jose Peraza singled to extend the frame. Seager doubled in the next at-bat to send the speedy outfielder home, cutting the OKC deficit to 6-2 after seven.

 

Horst and Jaye Chapman would close out the contest with scoreless eighth and ninth innings to send the Sky Sox to a 6-2 road win in Oklahoma City, improving their season record to 44-65. The Oklahoma City Dodgers fall to 67-44 with the loss.

 

The Sky Sox are back at it on Thursday night in game two of this four-game set with the Dodgers. Josh Roenicke (5-8, 5.38) will look to lead Colorado Springs to their second straight win as he matches up with right-hander Trevor Cahill (0-2, 6.27) at Chickasaw Bircktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central).

As I noted on Twitter, Zach Davies wears #11, adding to his slender mystique. Not noted above, but Davies' defense was stellar in this one, CF Kyle Wren and in particular SS Yadiel Rivera (wow, did he impress) aided the cause.
