MOBILE, AL – The final piece of the trade that sent Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Houston Astros made his appearance on Tuesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. Josh Hader dominated the Mobile BayBears in his first appearance as a Biloxi Shucker, guiding his new team to a 3-0, shutout over the Mobile BayBears.

 

The shutout was the league-leading 12th for Biloxi and third in the last six games. Hader, Brooks Hall and Damien Magnifico combined for the three-hitter.

 

Hader (1-0) followed in the footsteps of Monday night’s starter, Adrian Houser, by striking out the first batter he faced as a member of the Shuckers. Over five innings of work, the lefty gave up just one hit, walked one and struck out a season-high, nine, one shy of his career-high (10 on April 4, 2014) in his Milwaukee Brewers’ organizational debut.

 

The 21-year-old from Maryland allowed multiple base runners in the first, but had just one BayBear reach base on a wdropped third strike in the fourth.

 

Shuckers’ starters have allowed four runs in the first three games of the series on 11 hits, two walks and 18 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched.

 

Biloxi (18-19) opened the scoring for the sixth consecutive game by jumping out to a fast start in the first inning.

 

Brett Phillips (1x3, 2 R, BB) rocketed a triple into centerfield to start the game and came home to score on Orlando Arcia’s (2x4, RBI, 2B) double to give the Shuckers a quick, 1-0, lead.

 

Nathan Orf (1x4, 2 RBI) padded on the Biloxi lead with a bases-loaded, two-out, two-run single in the fifth, plating Nick Shaw (1x3, R, BB) and Phillips before Arcia was thrown out at third. Orf has now brought in runs in his last three games, tallying five over that span. Arcia extended his hitting streak to seven games and is 12-for-25 over the streak, logging now 35 multi-hit games this season.

 

Brooks Hall came out of the bullpen in the sixth and picked up where Hader left off, setting down the side in order in all three inning. In just his second relief appearance of the season, striking out two. Damien Magnifico (SV, 14) worked the ninth for his 16th save attempt. After getting a groundout to start the inning by Sean Jamieson, Jack Reinheimer and Socrates Brito pieced together back-to-back singles to break up a string of 14 consecutive BayBears set down in order by Biloxi pitching. A strikeout to Garret Weber and a groundout by Gabriel Guerrero ended the game and secured the shutout.

 

The Shuckers dropped the first two games of their previous two series and won the next three. Biloxi now trails in the series 2-1 and trail in the overall season series with the BayBears, 9-11.

 

The Shuckers will look to even up the series on Wednesday night and force a rubber match. RHP Tyler Wagner (8-5, 2.38) will take a two-game winning streak in which he’s allowed just two runs in 14 innings into the game three contest for Biloxi, while Mobile (23-14) will counter with RHP Blayne Weller (1-3, 5.61). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Lansing starts series with a shutout of the Rattlers

LANSING, MI - Chase Mallard struck out nine over seven scoreless innings to lead the Lansing Lugnuts to a 5-0 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Both teams had six hits in the game, but the Rattlers were shutout of the second time in the last three games.

 

Lansing (62-46 overall, 20-18 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wisconsin starting pitcher Eric Hanhold faced the minimum through the first three innings and got the first out of the fourth. He walked the next two batters, but catcher Greg McCall caught a runner trying to steal third base for the second out. Hanhold walked the next batter. Then, DJ Davis doubled to right-center to drive in both runners for a 2-0 lead.

 

The Lugnuts added an unearned run off reliever Scott Lieser in the bottom of the fifth. Michael De La Cruz doubled with one out and scored when Alex Maldonado's grounder was misplayed.

 

Wisconsin (36-71, 13-24) managed four hits and no walks off Mallard, but never got a runner past second base against the right-hander.

 

The Lugnuts scored their final two runs of the game in very different ways against reliever Devin Williams. In the seventh, Dawel Lugo started the frame with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Josh Almonte sent a grounder to the right side to move Lugo to third base. De La Cruz knocked in Lugo with a sacrifice fly to right. In the eighth, Chris Carlson hit a leadoff homer to right-center.

 

Dusty Isaacs allowed two hits in the eighth inning, but stranded both runners. He would retire the side in order in the ninth to complete the shutout.

 

The loss was the fifth in a row for the Rattlers, who have been outscored 28-3 during the streak. No Timber Rattlers player made it to third base in Tuesday's game.

 

Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Jon Perrin (1-2, 4.79) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Lansing has named Clinton Hollon as their starter. Hollon will be making his Midwest League debut on Wednesday. Game time is 6:05pm CDT. The action may be heard on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

Ford, Pitching Carry Yankees In Series Opener

Viera, FL- The Tampa Yankees (18-20, 52-56 overall) rode the strength of two pitchers Monday night to a 4-3 win over the Brevard County Manatees (16-20, 45-60 overall) at Space Coast Stadium.

 

The Yankees would take the lead for good in the game's opening frame against Manatee starting pitcher Javi Salas. As would be the theme of their night, the rally started with two out as Dustin Fowler base hit to right. Mike Ford then hit a double down the right field line and with Fowler running on a 3-2 pitch, he was able to score all the way from first to give Tampa the lead. Miguel Andujar followed with a single to center to bring home Ford. Salas would stop the bleeding by getting Jake Skole to ground out to first.

 

More two-out fortune would come Tampa's way in the top of the third. Tyler Wade led off the inning with a walk but would be erased on a fielder's choice by Abiatal Avelino. He would then swipe second for his 30th stolen base of the season with Fowler at the plate, who would then move him to third on a groundout. Ford continued his banner night at the plate by blasting a 405-foot two-run home run, his second of the season, to make it 4-0.

 

The 'Tees opened their account in the bottom of the fourth against Yankees starting pitcher Cale Coshow, starting with a one-out double to right by Clint Coulter. Garrett Cooper then hit a floater down the right field line that stayed fair to score Coulter and give Cooper his 28th two-bagger of the season. Coshow would limit the damage to just that by striking out Taylor Brennan and inducing flyout from Robinzon Diaz.

 

Brevard County had a chance to draw even in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Gabe Encinas. Cooper reached on an Avelino throwing error to start the inning and then moved up 90 feet when Brennan walked. Following a Diaz flyout, Michael Ratterree drew a free pass to load the bases. Encinas recovered admirably to strike out Dustin Houle and Angel Ortega to end the inning.

 

The Manatees displayed some fight in the bottom of the ninth against Encinas once again with the inning being ignited by a Cooper leadoff base hit to right. He would be pulled for pinch-runner Steven Halcomb, who advanced to second when Brennan walked. Diaz then ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Halcomb for his first RBI as a Manatee. Brennan would come in to score as Andujar made a diving stop on a grounder to retire Ratterree. As the tying run remained at second, Encinas made quick work of a Houle on a strikeout and when Ortega grounded out to third, he earned the 12-out save, his first of the season.

 

Coshow earned his seventh win of the season by giving up just one run on four hits in five innings, striking out four and walking none. The two runs on two hits in the ninth were all that Encinas gave up in four innings of work, during which he struck out six and walked three. Ford recorded the lone multi-hit game for the Yankees.

Salas lasted just four innings, giving up four runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one in 89 pitches. Brandon Woodruff was terrific in relief, throwing four shutout innings during which he gave up just one hit. Coulter and Diaz had multi-hit games on the offensive side for Brevard County.

 

The series continues on Wednesday night as RHP Jorge Ortega (8-7, 2.35 ERA) takes the ball against LHP Jordan Montgomery (3-4, 3.38 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M.

Trevor Seidenberger picthed one scoreless inning and Brandon Woodruff shut out the Yankees on 1 hit over the last 4 innings. Garrett Cooper was back after missing the Jupiter series with a groin injury. He and Robinzon Diaz had 2 hits. Both had doubles along with Clint Coulter. The bottom of the order twice failed to extend rallies which cost the Manatees the game.

Hader fitting right in with Shuckers

Left-hander tosses five one-hit innings in first start in Brewers system

Neither Josh Hader nor the Biloxi Shuckers missed a beat on Tuesday night.

 

The Brewers' No. 15 prospect struck out nine and gave up one hit over five innings as Double-A Biloxi blanked Mobile, 3-0, at Hank Aaron Stadium.

 

Hader (1-0) allowed a one-out single to Jack Reinheimer in the bottom of the first, then walked Socrates Brito before retiring nine in a row. Gabriel Guerrero ended the streak by reaching on a wild third strike, but the 21-year-old left-hander cruised throug the fifth and ended up throwing 55 of 73 pitches for strikes.

 

"Everything was right on point today," Hader said. "Fastball command was up there and I was throwing my slider for strikes early in the count, so that helped out big-time. Some [strikeouts] were fastballs, and the occasional slider."

 

Hader was one of four players shipped by the Astros to the Brewers on July 30 for Carlos Gomez. The Maryland native is no stranger to being traded, having been dealt from the Orioles to the Astros at the 2013 deadline for Bud Norris.

 

"I kind of had an idea that I was going to get traded," Hader said. "We had just got done throwing and I saw our [Corpus Christi] manager [Rodney Linares] on the phone and I was like, 'What's going on?'. Then I saw our pitching coach, Doug Brocail, on the phone and I knew something was going on."

 

Behind Hader, the Shuckers posted their Southern League-leading 12th shutout and third in six games.

 

"It feels good," said Hader, the 2014 California League Pitcher of the Year said. "Obviously, we've got pitchers on the staff and all of them can pitch. Having 12 shutouts is a good thing and it's nice to see that I can help bring another one."

 

Even though he was pitching for a new team in a new league, the basics remained the same for Hader.

 

"It's still 60 foot, six inches," he said. "Still playing baseball, just got to go out there and pitch. Don't feel like there's a difference."

 

Brooks Hall followed Hader with three perfect innings, fanning two, and Damien Magnifico worked around two hits in the ninth for his 14th save.

 

Brewers top prospect Orlando Arcia went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to extend his hitting streak to seven games, while newly acquired No. 2 prospect Brett Phillips scored twice for the Shuckers.

 

BayBears starter Yoan Lopez (1-5) took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts in six innings.

SPOKANE -- It's been more than 50 years since the Pioneer League has thrown together an assemblage of its finest for an All-Star Game.

 

On Tuesday night at Avista Stadium in Spokane, the rookie league's best locked up with the top ballplayers from the Northwest League, a short-season, Single-A alliance. Some of the top prospects from 14 Major League teams were together at one of the most revered ballparks in the minor leagues.

 

Four days ago, Helena Brewers slugger David Denson figured he'd be enjoying a few days devoid of baseball at the mid-season break as teammates Monte Harrison, Christian Trent and Marcos Diplan earned the All-Star game nod.

 

The outfielder Harrison, the No. 3 prospect in the Brewers' organization, was scratched from the roster after suffering a season-ending leg and ankle injury.

 

Trent (2-1), the strong-armed lefty from Ole Miss, was reportedly shelved by the Brewers coaching staff just before All-Star Game. It appeared as if the steady hurler Diplan (2-1) would be the Brewers' lone representative.

 

But when Ogden Raptors second baseman Willie Calhoun was promoted to the A-ball affiliate Great Lake Loons on Saturday, it was enough for the Pioneer League to fill the spot with Denson, a 15th-round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft currently hitting .279 with nine doubles, four homers and 13 RBIs for the Brewers.

 

"I was actually kind of surprised," Denson said during All-Star team's batting practice preceding the Tuesday night game. "I was coming back from a game, and they just said 'Hey, you're going to all the All-Star Game.' OK, I'm ready to go."

 

Denson and Diplan and some young Brewers employees drove from Helena to Spokane Monday evening before a short trip east to idyllic Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Both the All-Star teams were introduced in a private ceremony at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course, one of the top-ranked courses in the country.

 

"It was really, really nice," Denson said of the Idaho resort. "Definitely an experience I'll never forget."

 

Denson, who once hit three homers in four games and was named the Pioneer League Player of the Week, didn't participate in Tuesday's home run derby.

 

He did, however, find himself in somewhat of a media frenzy.

 

When word got out that the affable and charismatic Denson -- the same Denson who will dance on a dime and sing the national anthem before his own game -- was on-the-camera-radio gold, the Spokane-area media didn't hesitate. Television. Radio. Print. Bloggers. They all spoke to the Los Angeles-area product.

 

Denson was just happy to be in sizable stadium again. He played in his share when he played at Single-A Wisconsin earlier in the season.

 

"This is definitely one of the best ones I've been in, for sure," Denson said. "Especially for short-season A."

 

He was quick to remind with an ear-to-ear grin which stadium suits his fancy the most -- diminutive Kindrick Legion Field in Helena.

 

"I mean, it's not up there with our ballpark ... " Denson said.

SPOKANE -- David Denson sent a solo blast out of a sold-out Avista Stadium and also came up with an RBI double.

 

That was enough for the Helena Brewers' designated hitter to earn MiLB.com Top Star for the Pioneer League in the first-ever Pioneer League vs. Northwest League All-Star Game on Tuesday night in Spokane.

 

"Just having fun with my teammates," Denson said. "Coming out here was just a blessing and an experience in itself. Whatever was in God's plan to tell me which way was where I was going."

 

Brewers teammate Marcos Diplan struck out two and didn't yield a run in his lone inning of work.

 

While those occurrences were a coup for the Helena organization in the Pioneer League's first All-Star Game since 1964, it was the Northwest League which truly trumped.

 

The Tri-City Dust Devils' Peter Van Gansen's walk-off base hit in the bottom of the 10th scored the Spokane Indians' Yeyson Yrizarri and lifted the Northwest League past the Pioneer League 6-5 in front of 7,083 fans late Tuesday night.

 

If not for the walk-off hit, the game would have been called off at the end of the 10th with the tiebreaker going to the league which won the home run derby earlier in the evening. The Missoula Osprey's Luke Lowery of the Pioneer League edged LeDarious Clark of the Spokane Indians for the homer title.

 

The Brewers' Denson made the most of this his three at-bats, smacking a solo shot in the sixth which gave his team a 3-2 lead and an RBI double that knotted the game at 4 in the eighth.

 

Kevin Badlo of the Boise Hawks paced the Northwest League's offense with two RBI singles and also scored from third on a passed ball.

 

Orem Owlz catcher Taylor Ward, a first-round draft pick, homered in the second inning for the Pioneer League.

 

Van Gansen took home MVP honors for the Northwest All-Stars who, just a year ago, ended their All-Star game in a 0-0 tie.

Offense Shows Late Life after Pena Allows One Run over Five Strong Frames

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Iowa Cubs held off the Sky Sox after a wild ninth-inning rally in their 6-5 win before a crowd of 6,763 at Security Service Field on Tuesday night.

 

The Sox and I-Cubs held each held their opponent scoreless through four innings of play thanks to impressive outings by starters Ariel Pena and Carlos Pimentel (8-5, 3.25).

 

Iowa broke through for the game's first run in the fifth when Chris Valaika drove home Mike Baxter with a two-out RBI double. That run would prove to be the lone blemish on Pena's night as the right-hander departed at inning's end having allowed the one run on just three hits and a walk while striking out four in his five innings of work.

 

The Sky Sox offense answered with two runs of their own in the very next frame thanks to consecutive one-out knocks by Matt Dominguez, Yadiel Rivera and pinch-hitter Michael Reed. Reed's two-run double against Pimentel gave the Sox a 2-1 lead through five and increased the young outfielder's RBI total to eight in four games since his call-up to Colorado Springs on August 1st.

 

Jim Henderson tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning in relief of Pena before coming out for the seventh with the Sox maintaining the slim one-run lead. The veteran righty struck out the first two batters of the frame before giving up a two-out base-hit to Taylor Davis. Sox manager Rick Sweet would call upon lefty Mike Strong (0-1, 18.00) to face the lefty-swinging Mike Baxter. Strong walked Baxter before consecutive doubles by Valaika and Pimentel plated three runs to give Iowa a then 4-2 lead. Strong would not record an out in the frame as David Goforth came on to retire John Andreoli, limiting further damage and sending the Sox into the home seventh trailing by two.

 

Pimentel and left-hander Ryan Buchter combined for a scoreless seventh to keep Iowa ahead through seven. Pimentel left the game after allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four over 6.1 innings of work.

 

The I-Cubs offense would strike one more time before the night was through as slugging shortstop Javy Baez lived up to his heralded building with a long two-run blast off of Goforth in the eighth. The homer gave Baez a whopping 10 total RBI in the four-game set and would ultimately prove to be the game-winner as the Sox mounted an unexpected ninth-inning rally.

 

With his team still leading 6-2, Iowa reliever Armando Rivero would take over in the ninth in hopes of closing out the Sox with a quick inning. The right-hander gave up a leadoff single to Domingo Santana before striking out Nevin Ashley and Dominguez consecutively to leave Colorado Springs with just one more out. Rivera extended the night with a base hit before Matt Long worked a walk to load the bases with two out, forcing Iowa manager Marty Pevey to make a call to the bullpen. I-Cubs closer Brian Schlitter took over with Kyle Wren coming to the plate for a potentially game-changing at-bat. The speedy outfielder would line Schlitter's offering off of the right-hander, allowing all three runners to score as the ball bounced into foul play in shallow right. The wacky, yet clutch, three-run double gave the Sox a chance at tying the game late with Luis Sardinas coming up. Unfortunately Sardinas would ground out to first to end the riveting contest, giving Iowa a 6-5 win.

 

The I-Cubs improve to 60-50 with the win as Colorado Springs falls to 43-65 after the series-sweep. The Sky Sox will hit the road to begin a four-game series with the Oklahoma City Dodgers at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Wednesday night. Newly-acquired right-hander Zach Davies (NR) will make his Sky Sox debut against fellow righty Carlos Frias (2-0, 2.84) as Colorado Springs looks to snap their current four-game slide. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central).

Nothing against LH reliever Mike Strong, who has had a nice season, but the 40-man additions the Brewers will be making in 2016 and 2017 stand to be so much more exciting.
