Wang leaves in the 8th with the bases loaded and one out. He has only given up 1 unearned run to that point. If Preston Gainey can bail him out, it will be the 8th straight game in which Wei-Chung Wang has given up 0 or 1 earned run (one was a 1st inning wash out).

Edit. Presto let in all 3 base runners. I don't think they're all earned runs but the streak should be over. Still, one of Wang's better starts this year.

Manatees win finale, gain series split in Jupiter

The Brevard County Manatees and Jupiter Hammerheads finished their four-game set at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday. The ‘Tees took an early lead and it held up, with the visitors winning, 5-4.

Jupiter starter Luis Castillo (1-1) lasted only 3.1 innings, finding trouble in the third and fourth innings. Angel Ortega singled to start the inning, but was erased on Omar Garcia’s groundout. After Garcia was thrown out attempting to steal third, Clint Coulter lined an RBI single to left, plating McFarland. Taylor Brennan’s RBI double brought Coulter in with the second run.

The Manatees (16-19, 45-59 overall) put three more on the board in the fourth inning. Rafael Neda walked with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. Steven Halcomb singled, bringing Neda home and giving the visitors a 3-0 lead. Victor Araujo came in to relieve Castillo and Ortega greeted him with an RBI bunt single. Garcia was then hit by a pitch and went to second on an RBI single by Coulter, bringing Ortega home and making it 5-0. Garcia then swiped third, but was stranded there when Brennan popped out. Garcia’s steal of third was his 41st swiped bag of the season.

‘Tees starter Wei-Chung Wang was helped by double plays in the second and third inning to get him out of trouble, but the Hammerheads did get to him in the fourth. Austin Dean drew a one out walk, moved to second on an Avery Romero single and went to third on an error. Harold Riggins sacrifice fly scored Dean and cut the Manatees lead to 5-1.

Wang (8-3) got through seven innings in good shape, but ran into some difficulty in the eighth. Chris Hoo reached on an error by McFarland. One out later Justin Bohn singled, putting runners at first and second. Yefri Perez and Bohn pulled off a double steal and Dean drew a walk to load the bases. That ended the day for Wang, who exited in favor of Preston Gainey.

Gainey gave up a single to Romero that hit off Ortega’s glove at short and went into centerfield and allowed Perez to score, making it a 5-2 game. Brian Anderson drew a bases loaded walk, to close the gap to 5-3 and a sacrifice fly by Riggins made it 5-4. Gainey got out of the inning when Blake Barber popped out.

Wang -- who has pitched well of late -- continued that trend Sunday. He allowed four hits and only one earned run in 7.1 innings of work. He walked three and struck out five.

The Hammerheads (14-24, 49-59 overall) last chance in the bottom of the ninth was done in a hurry, as Gainey sent them down in order and picked up his fifth save. With that, the Manatees got the victory and a split in the four-game series.

Ortega, the Manatees ninth place hitter, ended his day 3-for-4. Coulter and Brennan had two hits each, pacing the Manatees 10 hit attack. Jupiter managed only five hits, three of those off the bat of Romero.

The Manatees will enjoy an off-day Monday before returning home Tuesday, to start a three-game series with the Tampa Yankees. The game is scheduled to start at 6:35 p.m.

Clint Coulter reached 4 times: 2 singles, 2 walks, 2 RBIs. Taylor Brennan 2-5 with a double. Angel Ortega 3-4. Dustin Houle had his first Manatees double.

BayBears comeback for 3-2 win over Shuckers, ending three-game win streak

Brett Phillips picked up his first hits as a member of the Brewers' organization

Biloxi Shuckers

Orlando Arcia increased his hitting streak to five games and picked up his 18th stolen base in the loss Sunday (John Shadrick)

MOBILE, AL - The Biloxi Shuckers' bullpen hadn't allowed a run in 17.2 innings, but couldn't hang onto a late, one-run lead in the eighth inning as the Shuckers' fell, 3-2, to the Mobile BayBears on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. The loss ended the three-game winning streak and dropped Biloxi to a game under .500 in the second half and five games behind first place of Mobile.

The Shuckers dropped to 8-10 against the BayBears this season and 2-4 at Hank Aaron Stadium. New addition, Brett Phillips had Biloxi's lone multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.

Both offenses were stagnant through the first three innings, totaling only two hits combined. But, it was the Shuckers who broke the scoreless tie in the fourth.

Orlando Arcia (1x4, RBI, R, SB) extended his hitting streak to five games with a single to start the fourth and moved to second on his 18th stolen base of the season and took second on an errant throw to second by Mobile catcher Mark Thomas. Nathan Orf (0x3, RBI) drove Arcia home with a grounder to short to give Biloxi a 1-0 lead.

Shuckers' starting pitcher Brent Suter held the BayBears scoreless through his effective 5.2 innings of work, before being pulled after surrendering a two-out single to Socrates Brito in the sixth. In his first start since July 5 against the Montgomery Biscuits, the southpaw allowed just one run on three hits in his 5.2 innings with a walk and three strikeouts. The Harvard product lowered his ERA to 1.95.

Manny Barreda came out of the bullpen and allowed a RBI double to Garrett Weber on the first pitch to knot the game at one apiece. The righty retired Zach Borenstein to get out of the inning. The 26-year-old walked two batters in the seventh, paving way for Jed Bradley to come out of the 'pen for his 13th appearance. The lefty got a shallow fly ball of the bat of pinch hitter Stewart Ijames to center to keep Mobile off the board in the inning.

Biloxi (17-18) took advantage of the Mobile bullpen in the eighth to reclaim the lead. Brandon Macia's (1x1, R, 2B) pinch-hit, one-out double put a runner in scoring position for Brett Phillips (2x3), who singled into right to put runners on the corners for Arcia. The 20-year-old put down a bunt, allowing Macias to score and give the Shuckers a 2-1 edge.

Mobile (22-13) took the lead against Jacob Barnes (3-5) in the eighth, snapping the string of 17.2 consecutive scoreless innings out of the Shuckers' bullpen.

A leadoff walk to Sean Jamieson in the eighth came back to haunt Biloxi, as the tying run would score two batters later on a double play. Back-to-back doubles by Borenstein and Gabriel Guerrero put the Shuckers in a 3-2 hole going into the final inning.

Biloxi will look to even the series in game two on Monday night RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, --) will make his first start as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers' organization after coming over in the trade that sent Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers to the Houston Astros. The BayBears will have RHP Edgar Garcia (2-0, 4.70) start game two. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. River Bandits top Rattlers to sweep series

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Carlos Leal had three of Wisconsin's six hits and scored their only run on Sunday at Quad Cities. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

DAVENPORT, IA - The hard times for the Wisconsin Timber Ratters at Modern Woodmen Park continued on Sunday night. The Quad Cities River Bandits defeated the Rattlers 6-1 to earn a three-game sweep and send the Wisconsin to its fourth straight loss.

Jose Fernandez put the River Bandits (69-36 overall, 24-13) in front with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. Quad Cities added to their lead later in the inning on a two-out, RBI single by Jason Martin.

Quad Cities added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wisconsin starting pitcher David Burkhalter gave up a leadoff walk and a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position and Luke Curtis came on in relief of Burkhalter.

Martin knocked in one of the runner Curtis inherited with a sacrifice fly. Bobby Boyd followed with an RBI double and the River Bandits were up 5-0.

Quad Cities scored their final run of the game on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Wisconsin (36-70, 13-23) had one hit, walked once, and struck out eight times in five innings against River Bandits starter Brock Dykxhoorn. They didn't fare any better over the next three innings and they were two outs shy of being shutout of the second game in a row.

The Timber Rattlers did get on the scoreboard in the ninth inning. Carlos Leal, who had three of Wisconsin's six hits in the game, singled with one out in the ninth. Elvis Rubio and Francisco Castillo followed with singles to load the bases. Sthervin Matos drove a sacrifice fly to left-center to knock in Leal.

The other Wisconsin highlight was the professional debut of pitcher Nathan Kirby. The left-hander out of the University of Virginia was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 40th selection of the 2015 draft. Kirby allowed a hit, walked none, and struck out one in a scoreless inning of work.

But it wasn't enough for the Rattlers who were outscored 18-2 by the River Bandits in the three-game series. Wisconsin is also 1-11 in twelve games against the playoff bound River Bandits, including 0-6 at Modern Woodmen Park, this season.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday. They return to action on Tuesday night in Lansing, Michigan against the Lansing Lugnuts. Eric Hanhold (0-1, 7.71) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The Lugnuts have named Chase Mallard (4-3, 5.38) as their starting pitcher. Game time at Cooley Law School Stadium is 6:05pm CDT.

Wednesday's broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

HOME RUN:

QC:

Jose Fernandez (1st, 1 on in 2nd inning off David Burkhalter, 1 out)

WP: Brock Dykxhoorn (6-3)

LP: David Burkhalter (3-7)

TIME: 2:30

ATTN: 3,825

Wisconsin Boxscore

David Burkhalter wasn't sharp again, and he really needs to be to have success. I believe Chris said Nathan Kirby was regularly missing up and away but the down of side of radio is that I couldn't rewind it and listen again. The hit he allowed was right back up on the middle as was the ground out.

In a year of offensive futility for the Rattlers Carlos Leal has been the lone bright spot. It doesn't matter what pieces have been changed out, the offensive issues have continued.

Brewers snap four-game losing streak

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (2-4) snapped their four-game losing streak with a 7-6 win on Sunday over the Great Falls Voyagers (4-2) at Centene Stadium.

Great Falls took the first lead of the game with a run in the top of the first. Johan Cruz singled to center to score Landon Lassiter who walked to lead off the inning. Lassiter went 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, and a run scored.

Lefty Jake Drossner (2-1) delivered another quality start for a Helena pitcher, giving up just one run over five innings of work. He would set a new season-high for strikeouts for a Brewer pitcher with nine over his five frames.

Helena would take the lead in the fifth with three runs and never trail again in the game. Jake Gatewood added a single and scored on the two-RBI hit of Mitch Ghelfi. Gatewood would go 3-for-4 with a solo homer, his fifth of the season.

The Voyagers would mount several late rallies, but fall short each time. Junior Rincon was brought in to close out the final out of the ballgame, striking out Lassiter to lock it up.

The Brewers now return to Kindrick Field for a four-game series with the Idaho Falls Chukars. First pitch on Thursday (after the All-Star break) is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Helena Box Score

LHP Jake Drossner not only struck out nine, but had no fly ball outs in his five innings; LF Malik Collymore made his Helena debut, 1-for-4 with a walk and two K's; have to admit I had to look up in what state Collymore's prior team, the Johnson City Cardinals, played in...

Final: Iowa 9, Colorado Springs 7

Sox Lose Early Lead, Fall In 9-7 Loss To I-Cubs

The Sky Sox let an early 3-0 lead get away in an eventual 9-7 loss to the Iowa Cubs before a Sunday evening crowd of 5,384 at Security Service Field.

The Colorado Springs offense jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead against I-Cubs starter Dallas Beeler (3-5, 6.04) on the strength of five first-inning hits. Luis Sardinas led off the frame with a single before crossing the plate on Pete Orr’s run-scoring triple in the very next at-bat. Beeler settled down momentarily, striking out the next two batters he faced in Michael Reed and Matt Clark to leave the Sox with two out, a runner on third and the recently acquired Domingo Santana coming to the plate. The newest Sky Sox outfielder drilled the first pitch he saw to the right field wall for an RBI double, plating Orr with the second run of the game. Nevin Ashley followed with an RBI single to extend the Sox lead to three before Matt Dominguez added to the early hit parade with a double of his own. Beeler would stop the bleeding with an inning-ending strikeout of Matt Long. Despite the three-run frame, the Iowa right-hander struck out the side to escape further damage.

Iowa chipped away at the early Sox lead, scoring runs in the second and third against Tyler Cravy (7-7, 3.97) to cut their deficit to one after three innings of play. A two-out second-inning RBI triple by Taylor Davis plated the first Iowa run before John Andreoli scored in the next inning on a wild throw by Dominguez. The Sky sox right-hander kept the I-Cubs off the board in the fourth before allowing another in the fifth on a Javy Baez game-tying RBI knock.

The Iowa offense would ultimately chase Cravy in the sixth after allowing all five batters faced in the frame to reach safely. Former top prospect Mike Olt laced an RBI double in the frame to give the Cubs their first lead of the night at 4-3 but the biggest blow for Cravy came against his last batter. Having overcome his own struggles on the evening, Beeler strolled to the plate with the bases loaded and no out in a prime knockout opportunity. Batting just .083 coming into the contest, the righty-swinging Beeler looped a soft line drive single over the drawn-in Sox infield, scoring two and prompting Rick Sweet to pull his starter in favor of Rob Wooten with Colorado Springs now trailing 6-3. Wooten would work out of the inning but not before allowing Adron Chambers to double home another run, closing the book on Cravy’s night. The starter would be charged with seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits and three walks while striking out one in a down performance.

The Sox added two more runs on Beeler in the next frame as back-to-back doubles by Dominguez and Long pulled Colorado Springs within three before a throwing error by Olt allowed Kyle Wren to reach and make it all the way to third, scoring Long to cut the deficit to two after six innings of play. Beeler surrendered five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and a walk while striking out four, doing just enough to secure the win.

The Sky Sox plated two more runs over the game’s final frames against left-hander Ryan Buchter and righty Blake Cooper thanks to RBIs by newest Sox outfielders Santana and Reed. Recently promoted left-hander Michael Strong gave the Sox a scoreless seventh in his Triple-A debut before giving up two runs in the Iowa eighth. Speedster John Andreoli tagged the reliever for a run-scoring triple before Chambers plated him from third with a sac fly to center. The RBI gave the I-Cubs left-fielder three driven in on the night.

Jeremy Horst made his Security Service Field debut with a perfect ninth, sending the Sky Sox into the home ninth, trailing 9-7. Iowa closer Brian Schlitter (S, 15) came on to close out the two-run contest with Ashley, Dominguez and Long due up. The right-hander tossed a 1-2-3 inning to lock down the win, improving the Cubs to a 58-50 on the season. The loss drops Colorado Springs to 20 games below .500 at 43-63.

The Sox are back at it on Monday night as they look to get back in this four-game series with a win over I-Cubs. Hiram Burgos (2-2, 3.32) is set to lead the charge against Iowa right-hander Felipe Paulino (2-6, 4.57) with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM MDT (7:35 Central) from Security Service Field.

Sky Sox lineup gets a boost from Milwaukee trades

By Joe Paisley, Colorado Springs Gazette

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox picked up two slugging outfielders and a couple of young arms that could jump-start their lineup heading into the final five weeks of the regular season.

Right fielder Domingo Santana and right-handed pitcher Zach Davies arrived in Colorado Springs on Sunday after trades by the parent Milwaukee organization with Houston and Baltimore before Friday afternoon's deadline.

By Sunday evening, Santana made his home debut as the No. 5 batter in right field. His 16 home runs and 59 RBIs at Triple-A Fresno were tops on the hosts' roster entering Sunday's game against Iowa.

"We're real excited to have them both," Sky Sox manager Rick Sweet said.

Santana, who turns 23 on Wednesday, is excited to join a new organization and play at hitter-friendly Security Service Field.

"It's a fresh start," the 6-foot-5, 225-pounder said. "The goal remains the same. Show them what I can do and make the big club. I just need to go out, have fun and do my job."

Santana certainly has the bat to make the Brewers.

"He has tremendous power," Sweet said. "He's a good defensive player and a good prospect for the major league level."

If he can limit his strikeouts (91 for Fresno), the native of the Dominican Republic could find himself in Milwaukee.

"I need to work on shortening my swing and making contact more often," he said.

He introduced himself to his new teammates by muscling a line drive down the right-field line for an RBI on his first pitch faced Sunday.

Davies, listed at 5-11, 155 pounds, may not pass the eye test for a major league prospect. But after a few minutes' conversation, the 22-year-old has a quiet, strong-minded determination about him that may explain his 5-6 record and 2.84 ERA in Norfolk of the International League.

"He is definitely not a big guy," Sweet said. "He is a tremendous competitor who relies on his defense. He gets batters out and you can never have too many of those guys."

Davies' role is unclear, he said, but he may start as early as Thursday. He has started 18 games in a breakout season in Norfolk with 81 strikeouts in 101 innings. He was ranked as a top-10 prospect for Baltimore and projected as a possible back-of-the-rotation starter in the bigs.

"I am pretty happy about this new beginning," he said. "I will just do whatever it is wherever it is they want me."

The roster shuffle also included a couple of promotions from Double-A Biloxi, one of whom made himself known in Saturday's debut. Center fielder Michael Reed collected four RBIs in his first game to spark a rally for the hosts in an eventual 13-8 loss. Left-handed reliever Michael Strong (4-1, 2.59 ERA, 49.2 innings) was called up as well.

The four new players resulted in the release of lefties Nick Additon and Michael Kirkman, infielder Donnie Murphy and outfielder Bryan Petersen.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Seven Sky Sox had multiple hits, so Michael Reed's 0-for-5, the polar opposite of his first game, stands out for the wrong reasons; RF Domingo Santana finished 2-for-5 (double, two RBI) in his Brewer debut; 1B Matt Clark was on base four times (double, walk); 3B Matt Dominguez doubled twice...

21-year-old 6'7" RHP and United Kingdom-born Michael Petersen faced the minimum over his three inning start; 19-year-old RHP Karsen Lindell allowed the two runs, but they were unearned, as four Brewer pitchers combined to not allow an earned run all game...
