Best ever Power 50

NYChez
The 1/13/2006 Power 50 contained 7 future MLB all stars. The 2010 Power 50's contained several future impact players (mainly for other teams). If those groups were a 10 and 9 on a 1-10 scale and 2002 and 2011 were a 1 and 2, the current prospect list feels like an 8. A pitching ace at advanced levels, corner infielders, and another catcher would move this group into 2006 and 2010 territory.

Definitely goes to show the value of pitching. Maybe one player out of the entire 50 had a significant impact in the majors, that being Gallardo.

Also interesting that the formatting is dynamic, in that it shows Tony Gywnn Jr as being 32 (!).

There's one guy who was in the Brewer system at that time that wasn't in that top 50 who's still in the major leagues (currently on the DL).

Any guesses?

If you said Carlos Corporan, you are correct.

I remember trying to make a case for his inclusion at some point, and he may have made it but just barely at some point.

The last Power 25 we did was fun, and the next one will be even better! With that said, the system is still missing that franchise player you can build around. Fielder, Braun, Yo...someone like that. Either a guy who you can be a big stick #3 or #4 in the lineup, or a franchise starting pitcher. Are their guys who COULD develop into that? Sure, several. But as of today there is not one player who fits that description in the system. Not someone like Fielder or Braun who absolutely dominated at every level.

Fielder and Braun were top 10 picks. Trades generally go only so far. The real studs are drafted usually very high. Clark could end up being that middle of the order bat and next year they figure to draft in the top 5. There could be a Yo in the system now. Certainly Nelson can still go on to a Yo-like career.

Phillips, Santana, Coulter, Roache, Lara could all be that guy too- but they're not a lock yet. That's my point. I don't want to sound overly negative, as the next Power 25 will be better than it has been for a few years. Just realizing we don't have that "can't miss" big bat or ace pitcher- yet.

So when the last Power 50 was published, this was the state of our system..... If I was Toby, I woulda stopped as well.... Ha just look at the top 10 production compared to the 11-25 range.

Top 10

Peralta

Thornburg

Schaefer

Green

Scarpetta

Heckathorn

Gindl

Bucci

Gagnon

Richardson

Scooter & Khris Davis were 11 and 12

Yadiel Rivera #15

Mike Fiers #19

Orlando Arcia #20

Jimmy Nelson #23

Martin Maldondo #25

Jason Rogers #unlisted

I think in 7-8 years from now, a power 50 of our system from today would rival any others. We are deep and strong right now! Best it has been in a long while!

2-10 on that list.....wow. Yuck!! Nothing to jump up and down about. But yes, there is a lot of potential in the minors right now. And that's exciting. If everything falls into place, and guys keep developing, there could be some great years ahead.

"Here's why the Brewers' system in no way represents a supposedly worst-in-baseball designation. Check out the top seven. Six of thoise seven are in AA or AAA, and the one who isn't is close by and has many diehards very excited."

In hindsight maybe that worst in baseball was deserved.

I count 8 future MLB all stars on the 1/13/06 Power 50. Fielder, Hart, Cruz, Braun, Gallardo, Escobar, Brantley, Cain. That's kind of insane.

It's criminal how little was accomplished with that much talent.

Only if life worked out and we were in AL

2011

1b Hart

2b Weeks

SS Escobar

3B Braun

LF Brantley

CF Gomez

RF Cain

C Lucroy

DH Fielder

Pitching..... Well Guess wouldn't matter as much with the runs we'd be scoring....

Disagree. Gallardo is the only front line pitcher on that list, and he was always more of a 2 or 3 than an elite ace type guy.

It is criminal that the Brewers have failed to produce an ace level pitcher since the injury plagued Ben Sheets in the late 90/early 2000's. They had tons of top picks in the 00-07 range and failed to grab a future ace. Instead, they were forced to make the Greinke and Marcum trades because of the pitching problems.

I agree with everything except being forced to make the Marcum trade. That was a move they forced in my mind. Apart from that though you are spot on. Jack Z was loved and adored but he simply did not provide major league pitching to go with the bats. Pitching costs a ton of money to get or a ton of prospects. Melvin, Jack Z, our managers, and bad luck share the blame for that grouping not producing a World Series

They put a WS champion caliber team out in 2011. It just didn't work out. Bad luck combined with STL having Larussa and whatever magic spell they have did us in. Still find it crazy they didn't have a starter make it past the 5th and got more innings out of the bp than starters and still won. Bad luck in that if ATL (I think it was them that year) doesn't completely choke we never would have had to face STL. Bad luck that Greinke basically laid an egg in the playoffs, whereas other teams over the years have ridden an ace to a title. Biggest thing I probably would have done different is to just grab a strong defensive SS instead of Yuni, that team had plenty of O, didn't really need his HRs. Though he actually did well offensively in the playoffs if I remember correctly.

I also think the 2012 was a very strong team that should have done much better. Of course you can nitpick things being a small market team we can't just do whatever we want, but overall you look at that team thinking there is a very good chance at a deep playoff run.

I just bring this up as most people tend to rip the FO as if they're completely incompetent when really they did put together two seasons of championship caliber teams, just didn't work out. Perfectly reasonable to argue they should have done other things for the long term instead but their goal of putting a championship caliber team out there did happen.

No, they weren't, you're welcome to believe that was the case but it simply wasn't true as the Cards blew the Crew away in the NLCS and it wasn't a close series. The run differential was horrendous for a 6 game series.

Bad luck? Hardly.

They did go 9-9 against the Cardinals in the regular season and outscored them. The Cardinals got hot at the right time.
