The New Acquisitions: Where They Fall on Our Top Prospects List, and What They Mean for the System Overall

Is there any concern that Brett Phillips has only hit 1 HR in 187 AB at AA? He had 15 HR in 291 AB at A+ earlier this season, but his power appears to have disappeared. Still hitting well overall, but a little worrisome to me.

Phillips power surge was in a pretty hitter friendly league, so there is some concern. But he's got 13 doubles and 7 triples at AA (on less than 200 ABs) - so the power may very well be lurking just below the surface. An .843 OPS at AA is still pretty impressive.

I'm not really going to worry at this point because the guy is still hitting well, but I certainly want to see a few more dingers.

To me the big question is how long can Brewers really keep Santana down in AAA.... He is impressive and AAA no longer offers a challenge to him (outside working on k rate)

I feel like they should be getting him some work at 1B down there and see how he responds. At the very least can get the LHP ABs come September in MLB with an occasional start over Davis/Braun too. If he takes to the position well you can just slide him in there next year if Lind is traded in the offseason, or when he at least is traded by the deadline. Maybe that's a sign they plan on moving Braun to 1B this offseason though.

As long as he keeps getting extra base hits, I'm not concerned about the HR power at all. I see him as a top of the lineup guy down the road. Sure, HR's are always nice, but if he is hitting for average and getting a good amount of 2Bs and 3Bs with some HRs sprinkled in, he will be great.

September call-ups are soon enough, no need to push it a couple weeks before then.

Might want him on the roster before September so he's eligible for post season play.

I'm not super familiar with Santana's OF defense, but it seems like scouts consider his arm possibly his best single tool (I think MLB Pipeline had him with a 70 throwing arm?). Doesn't mean I think he's a Gold Glover, but it seems a shame to move him to 1B.

Just to clarify, Santana is listed as having a 60 arm and 50 field.

A person I trust who has seen him says he's average at best. Really nice arm, but stiff and not particularly instinctive. That's just one person's opinion.

Thank you, my mistake. Brett Phillips is listed as having a 70 arm.

Even if true. He's 6'5 and huge so his range can't be great and will only go down with time.

He's played 11 games in the minors in CF and 3 innings there for Houston. Now Minute Maid park has a huge center field and you need speed in CF but not so much at Miller Park with decent speed at the corners with Braun and Davis. Would he be that much worse an option for the Brewers than Shane Peterson in CF?

He's listed at 6'5" 225. That isn't bulky by today's standards. Heck Gomez is listed at 6'3" 220. He doesn't look bulky in the upper body from his highlights so 225 looks pretty close.

Santana looks like football player to me. He has the look of a guy who's going to fill out over the next few years.

Gomez was sort of freaky in that he never looked that big.

Gomez is built like Monte Harrison with the 6'3 220 extreme athlete body.

Santana is closer to Jason Heyward or Cory Hart type body and type of athlete. That 6'5 to 6'6 body that will eventually be in the still lean/filled out 240 range. Similar athlete as those two I'd say. Good not great speed.

September call-up. Same with Davies. I will be shocked and disappointed if they're not both brought up then. Hopefully Reed also. Then Peterson and Schafer should never see the field again.

Davies and Reed won't get called up because they are not on the 40-man roster (unless, of course, someone is let go and they want to add one of them).

Here's our current minor leaguers who are on the 40 man roster:

Juan Centeno

Matt Clark

Matt Dominguez

Preston Guilmet

Johnny Hellweg

Jim Henderson

Brandon Kintzler

Yadiel Rivera

Domingo Santana

Luis Sardinas

Mike Strong

Tyler Wagner

Rob Wooten

Edit: I counted only 37 guys on the 40-man roster, so several players could get added if the team so desired.

Santana gets good marks for speed. It doesn't seem like anyone is raving about his defense, but I see zero reason to think he can't play a corner OF because of his height/size. He's not Ryan Howard out there.
