Offical ColbyJack Lovefest thread

He seems like a nice guy, and does a lot of research on news reports, but (to use a financial term) Colbyjack doesn't really "add value". Seems to put up a bunch of stuff on the site from all sorts of internet reports and various blogs and things like that, but (once again from the finance world (e.g. the movie Wall Street) he doesnt really wow me. No offense to colbyjack. Insider information and access are the things that add value, not rehashing of things already out there.

If you think there's no value in compiling all that information and presenting it in an organized and entertaining fashion, I encourage you to go out on your own and find your own stuff. Considering what you paid for colby's efforts (which is to say, nothing), I think you're in a poor position to complain.

Colby has also offered plenty of the insider information that you crave over the years. But hey, you can't please everyone...

Considering draft day is the only day of the year that brings Brewerfan's server to its knees, he must be doing something people like.

I did not mean to say that his efforts lack value, because there is value in what he does. But as I mentioned, in finance terms, there is no "value add". And what I mean by that is that alot of the information he posts comes from other places first. To make an analogy, in finance (once again) the second somethign hits the airwaves or the newspaper, its public, its worthless, there is no value add. A good financial analyst is going to have contacts inside of the company (access) and in turn will be able to pass along his assumptions on the value of that acess (value add) onto his customers/clients. What colby does is time consuming for sure, but there is not really anything new in what he posts here. There is a difference between being a scouting director who gets a lot of his information 2nd hand from his scouts, who also a lot of times get their information from a "bird dog", and getting your information from blogs and newspaper clippings, or even seeing a player in person and noticing the little things that you cant get on a tv broadcast or a highlight or a news story.

And I do apologize to colbyjack, he provides a nice list of information, much bigger than what the journal sentinel may provide. And there is definitely value in it.

Colby is clearly at the top of the pyramid of minor league baseball expertise on this site in my mind. He's one of many fantastic informants who dwell here, but I just can't imagine the site (especially the minor league forum) without him. Thank you.

"Colbyjack is an employee of Perfect Game USA, and therefore has access to much of the information that the blogosphere doesn't. He also attends several amateur events each year to scout first hand. "

I dont think that the fact that someone is affiliated with Perfect Game USA gives you access that others do not have. I am no fan of that particular group. Their main goal is making money. When a kid is asked to pay $250 and up to be a part of a Perfect Game Team, I think that that aspect dimishes its validity and "reporting". (i.e. a kid is only a perfect game kid if he can afford the price, and kids that cant afford who may be as good or better are not included)(This belief also holds true with "travelling teams", ie only kids whose parents are wealthy enough to send the kid all over are part of those teams).

And when you say that he "scouts" these events...who is he scouting for? A major league team? Because its not really scouting if youre not getting paid by a team that will use and evaluate your "scouting". Its just fan observations otherwise.

Now if he were a major league scout, even a bird dog, he would be adding value.

I will not comment on your use of the term "blogosphere" because your use of it pretty much speaks for itself.

It's nice that instead of giving Colby his due for all the time and effort it takes to maintain the draft forum basically by himself, we instead end up debating semantics.

So I guess by that definition Mass doesn't add any value on Minor League forum because all he does is link 30 stories and a mountain of information for us every single day in the Link Reports?

I'm trying very to hard to be civil, because honestly, those posts really ticked me off. You don't have to agree with us, but give the man his due for his efforts...

Geez, gordo? great job trying to hijack a thread. Is this discussion even necessary at all? Methinks not.

By the way, thanks Patrick!

Gordo, why would you even bring your agenda into a thread like this?

Colbyjack spends a large amount of free time aggregating info and writing articles, for you, for free. A thread was started to thank him for his efforts and you take a crap on it?

This must be the sixth tool of posting, eh bradyo?

"This must be the sixth tool of posting, eh bradyo? "

Huh?

This is a message board isnt it? A place where people express their opinions, right? All I am saying is that despite that fact that a guy does a lot of posting here, or is even directly related to the "operation" of this site, doesnt make you an expert.

I think what colbyjack does is pretty good, all I am saying is that it doesnt really stack up to the level of insider information or expert. If you get ticked off because someone voices criticism, well welcome to the real world. He works for Perfect Game USA, great. He does stuff for this website, great. But he isnt a scout and he doesnt work for a major league team, so he is neither an expert nor an insider. Worthy of thanks, yes. Anything above that is patting yourself and him on the back.

I would think that even he would rather have respect and admiration from people affiliated with the game, as opposed to self congratulatory compliments.

Bleet, bleet, bleet.

Your agenda was obvious as bradyo, and it was obvious as gordofieldo.

Patrick has a day job, just like the rest of us, and we don't claim to have the best draft coverage on the internet and a group of fully-paid independent scouts travelling the country to bring you the best information not available elsewhere.

However, given his contacts in amateur baseball, and given that our aggregation of information and insights from actual witnessing of showcase events and covering them, we can certainly "add value" to our aggregation.

Obviously, since you're not with us anymore, you won't be able to throw your wet blanket on a thread I started so that people could chime in on thanking Patrick for all his hard work that he provides to us, for FREE.

On the plus side, you'll have more time to do something else, like perhaps go heckle a 5th grade talent show.

No he isn't -- He has never represented himself as such either. There are plenty of people who are critical to delivering sports information that are not "scouts" or "works for a major league team".

Worthy of thanks, yes. Anything above that is patting yourself and him on the back.

I have never met Colby in person -- but I'd be the first to pat him on the back for what he does.

I'll pat Colby on the back. And even though it's a little off topic, I'll pat Mass on the back as well. The aggregation of links and info that those two have given us at BF.Net is astounding - we should all be so fortunate as to have them around.
