Gomber & Chiefs stop Wisconsin's Win Streak

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Sthervin Matos hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season for the Timber Rattlers in Thursday's game against the Peoria Chiefs. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Austin Gomber stopped the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers winning streak and extended his own. The left-handed starting pitcher for the Peoria Chief allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven over 7-2/3 innings to win his tenth straight decision in a 5-1 victory over the Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field on Thursday afternoon. Wisconsin saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.

Peoria (55-47 overall, 22-12 second half) scored an unearned run in the top of the first to take the lead. Darren Seferina reached on an error to start the game. He stole second and third base to get into position. Brian O'Keefe knocked in Seferina with a two out single to right.

Gomber, who last lost a game on April 29, took over from there. The only two hits he allowed in the early part of the game were a first inning single to Carlos Leal and a one-out double to Greg McCall in the third. Gomber retired fourteen in a row after the double by McCall.

Wisconsin starter Jon Perrin gave up the unearned run in the first inning, but nothing else over his five innings of work. Perrin struck out five, hit two, and walked none, but the offense couldn't get the game back to even.

The Chiefs padded their lead in the seventh inning with three runs against reliever Luis Ortega. Seferina and Alex DeJong had back-to-back RBI singles with one out. Seferina scored on a wild pitch later in the frame and Peoria was up 4-0.

The Timber Rattlers (36-67, 13-16) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. Sthervin Matos launched an opposite field home run on the first pitch of the frame. The homer was the eighth of the season for Matos and pulled Wisconsin to within 4-1. The homer extended a streak for Matos, who has now scored a run on five straight games for Wisconsin.

That run was the only one allowed by Gomber who retired the next two batters, but left with McCall reached on an error. Jhonny Polanco got the final out of the eighth inning,.

The Chiefs added another run in the top of the ninth. They loaded the bases after there were two outs and none on base against Ortega, who would walk Kenny Peoples-Walls to force in a run.

Polanco finished off the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The loss evened the season series between the Rattlers and Chiefs. Both teams have won six of the twelve games played in the 2015 series. The Rattlers, who now trail the Chiefs for the second half Western Division Wild Card by 8-1/2 games, have three games left against Peoria. The teams will meet at Dozer Park August 21-23.

The Timber Rattlers begin a road trip on Friday with the first game of a three-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits in Davenport, Iowa. The Timber Rattlers have named Angel Ventura (5-4, 3.18) as their starting pitcher. Quad Cities has not named their starter. Game time at Modern Woodmen Park is 7:00pm.

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may watch the game on that platform with the Quad Cities announcers.

Rattler Radio Postgame Post – July 30, 2015

Erickson drops some Nathan Kirby hints and talks about Sthervin Matos, worth a listen.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I wish there was more to talk about than this, but why is it that 110 year old John Lucas can hustle out to the mound and it takes the Peoria manager and pitching coach literally a minute to cover that same 15 yards? The world gets put on hold on for Cardinal class? Speaking of which Joe Kruzel was ejected after arguing a possible HR that was called foul by the base ump. I couldn't tell fair or foul from behind home plate, but by where it landed on the catwalk behind the foul poll in RF I thought it might have been a HR. Peoria argues every close call non stop, they did it in all 3 games, it's really irritating how they slow the game down for nothing.

Austin Gomber was covered by Chris above, I was surprised when he came back out for the 8th but the Cards will push their young pitchers.

Omar Cotto hit the ball hard twice with no result, the only thing not to like about Carlos Leal is he drags the plow a little bit when running the bases. Luis Aviles is incredibly susceptible to high heat, Peoria attacked him up there in all 3 games but he did make an awesome diving catch towards the LF line that was worth a look in the Rattler Radio postgame linked above.

I'll get the velocities up later.

Yes. The umpire baiting is especially irksome because there are only the two umps and they can't possibly be in position on every play. That's especially true of a lot of the foul/fair calls down the lines.

It occurred to me while I was at the game that I didn't do a scouting report for Perrin last time.

Jon Perrin RHP

  • Low 3/4 arm slot.
    Clean lower half.
    Very quick pick off move.
    Curve is very average.
Primarily relies on the sinker, occasionally mixes in a 4 seam. Sinker has more run than sink from what I've seen.
His slider doesn't bite, or at least hasn't when I've watch him pitch.
Falls off a bit towards 1st.

The Hammerheads scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Brevard County starter Brandon Woodruff. Austin Dean opened the scoring with an RBI double down the right field line. Later in the inning, Felix Munoz drilled a two-run triple to right and made it 3-0.

Brevard County cut into the Jupiter lead in the third. With two outs, Michael Ratterree singled to left. Rafael Neda then doubled to center. Ratterree came all the way around from first thanks to a fielding error from center fielder Yefri Perez.

Flynn's RBI single gave the Hammerheads a 4-1 advantage. Rodrigo Vigil then walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Seidenberger walked Justin Bohn to force home a run. Final: Colorado Springs 6, New Orleans 5, regularly scheduled game

As of this post, the only doubleheader write-up is from the Zephyrs --

Z's, Sky Sox each earn wins in late night

New Orleans Zephyrs

A long night at Zephyr Field finally concluded at 12:56 AM, with the Zephyrs and Colorado Springs each walking away with a victory.

Isaac Galloway capped the Zephyrs' two-run rally in the bottom of the 10th inning with a bases-loaded single to lift New Orleans past the Sky Sox, 3-2 in the conclusion of Wednesday's suspended game.

After Matt Long led off the top of the 10th with a home run to put Colorado Springs ahead 2-1, the Z's capitalized on a throwing error to score twice in the bottom of the frame.

Marcell Ozuna reached base when shortstop Luis Sardinas threw wildly to first base, and a one-out double into the right field corner by Jordany Valdespin put runners at second and third. The Sky Sox elected to intentionally walk Austin Nola to load the bases, but Jaye Chapman hit Jhonatan Solano with a pitch to force in the tying run, and Galloway came off the bench to chop a single up the middle and give the Zephyrs their seventh straight victory.

It was Galloway's second walk-off hit of the season, having also delivered a 13th-inning single to beat Omaha on June 13. He extended his hitting streak to seven games, during which he picked up at least one RBI in each contest.

The teams had endured a two-hour rain delay, then remained scoreless into the seventh inning before Reid Brignac drilled his fourth homer of the year, the Zephyrs' first hit of the game. Kyle Wren homered off Chris Reed in the eighth to draw the Sky Sox even.

Travis Blackley was credited with the win despite serving up Long's home run in the 10th inning. Blackley (3-4) allowed two hits in two innings of relief.

Chapman (2-2) suffered his second blown save and took the loss.

***

The Sky Sox came away with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap after the teams exchanged the lead three times over the first three innings. Matt Clark's bloop single with two outs in the first was answered by Austin Wates's first home run of the year in the bottom of the inning.

Colorado Springs scored an unearned run on a throwing error in the top of the second, but Z's pitcher Justin Nicolino helped his cause in the bottom half by lacing a two-run double into the right-center field alley. It was Nicolino's first hit in 14 at-bats this season.

Former Zephyr Matt Dominguez evened the score in the third with an RBI single, and Long doubled home the go-ahead run for a 4-3 lead. Two innings later, Long struck again with a two-run single to provide the Sky Sox with needed insurance.

Brandon Bantz ripped a double down the third base line to score two runs in the sixth, bringing the Zephyrs back within a run. Bantz finished 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, his second three-hit game of the year.

Jeremy Horst allowed the potential tying run to get to third base with two outs in the seventh, but struck out Nola to prevent the Zephyrs from winning eight games in a row for the first time since May 1996.

Rob Wooten (4-1) tossed two scoreless innings to earn the victory, while Nicolino (6-7) was charged with four runs - three earned - and was saddled with the loss.

GRAND CHUTE – Jon Perrin had the rockiest of starts with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Panic wasn’t an option, and Perrin has rebounded with poised, polished pitching.

The Oklahoma State product hasn’t allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive innings and continued his strong work on the mound with another effective performance Thursday in Wisconsin’s 5-1 home loss to Peoria.

Perrin, a 27th-round selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in the June draft, was charged with the loss, but deserved a better fate. In making his fourth start with the Rattlers, Perrin allowed an unearned run on just three hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings, departing with Wisconsin facing a 1-0 deficit.

The Chiefs (55-47, 22-11) eventually broke the game open with a three-run seventh off Rattlers reliever Luis Ortega to snap a five-game Wisconsin winning streak.

“(Perrin) has been very solid for us,” said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson. “He’s a sinker, slider guy who keeps the ball down in the zone. He gets a lot of ground balls.”

Perrin, a right-hander, began his pro career in June with the Arizona Brewers, but was promoted to Wisconsin earlier this month after just three Rookie League appearances in which he went 2-0 with an 0.90 ERA.

In his first two games with the Rattlers, Perrin was roughed up for 11 runs in five innings, including a horrendous one-inning stint against Kane County in which he surrendered eight runs and didn’t record an out.

But the 22-year-old Perrin settled down after getting clubbed by the Cougars and hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last four appearances.

“I got a pretty little nice wake-up call at Kane County, giving up those eight runs without getting an out,” said Perrin. “I just got back to basics. I started executing my pitches on both sides of the plate with the fastball and that set up my breaking stuff and my sinker, which is my bread and butter. I worked with (pitching coach) Gary Lucas and was able to get everything fine-tuned.”

The only run off Perrin (1-2 with a 4.79 earned run average) was unearned and came in the top of the first following an error by shortstop Blake Allemand, two stolen bases by Darren Seferina and an infield single by Brian O’Keefe off the glove of second baseman Francisco Castillo.

“I wasn’t quite as sharp as I should have been early,” said Perrin. “But overall it was a good outing. Pitching on the third game of the series is an advantage because you get to see what the opposing team has been doing. They’re a team that likes to pull the ball, so the focus today was pounding fastballs inside and underneath the hands of right-handed hitters. We had a pretty good game plan today.”

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Perrin compiled an 18-9 record in his four-year college career at Oklahoma State, with a 3.19 ERA in 65 games, including 35 starts.

“When he has real good command, he can go to both sides of the plate and get swings and misses,” said Erickson. “When you miss small and keep the ball down, the ball doesn’t get driven as much and you don’t give up a lot of extra-base hits. He’s been good the majority of his time here. He got the ball up in that one bad outing in Kane County. He kept us right there today, had a good effort.”

The Rattlers’ lone run came in the bottom of the sixth, when third baseman Sthervin Matos socked a solo opposite-field home run to right. Matos is hitting just .206, but leads the Rattlers with eight homers.

“He’s got some power,” said Erickson. “We’re really trying to get him to use his hands when he hits. He’s got good, soft hands, but he wants to get real big, upper-body shoulder swings and we’re trying to loosen him up a little bit. When he has good hands, the bat flips through the zone and he gets pretty good extension. But when he tries to get big, the bat drags through the zone and isn’t as quick.”

Peoria won the game despite the absence of manager Joe Kruzel, who was ejected in the top of the second for arguing over a long fly ball by Steve Bean. The ball traveled down the right-field line and was ruled foul instead of a home run. Kruzel had a different opinion and even Perrin thought that he had caught a break.

“It’s better to be lucky than good,” said Perrin. “I thought it was fair. I was looking for a new ball from the umpire and then I see the guy striding back to home plate. Sometimes you get bailed out like that.”

The Rattlers (35-67, 12-20) managed just three hits off Peoria lefty starter Austin Gomber and reliever Jhonny Polanco. Gomber, a fourth-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014, allowed just three hits and fanned seven in 7 2/3 innings to raise his season record to 10-3.

“If you would have told me before this home stand that we would have won five of six, I would have been very happy,” said Erickson. “We’ve been playing some very consistent baseball. The last four or five games, we haven’t beaten ourselves and have taken advantage of the other team’s mistakes.”
