Ben Zobrist to the Royals

And That

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/07/royals-to-acquire-ben-zobrist.html

Zobrist to the Royals for pitching prospects Aaron Brooks and Sean Manaea. Manaea was drafted 34th overall in 2013 and was KC's #3 prospect according to BA entering the season, but hasn't pitched much this year.

Good get for the Royals, and probably doesn't impact the Brewers' trade market much.

Man I hope the Royals can come through this year in the playoffs. Wonder if they are done adding pieces now or not. They could still use Parra, but do they have anything left to offer?
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Is this the type of return that we should now expect for Parra? Both Zobrist and Parra are F/A's at the end of this season, and Parra is having a better year than Zobrist is for the A's. Both guys can also play multiple positions and are good defenders. That Manaea kid was their #3 prospect coming into the season, so I'm guessing he was a fringe Top 100 guy. Not sure on the Brooks kid.

Should we now expect a similar return for Parra, and be disappointed if Doug can't at least get equal value for him from another team? Or, should we expect more or less in return than the A's got with Zobrist?

Just curious what others feel.

Manaea was ranked #56 by mlb.com #81 by BA and #85 by BP coming into this year. He's a former #1 pick. Big guy, projectable. Throws some big heat. 185k in 153 minor league innings. Good upside - #2 starter type if he can control things.

Missed most of 2015 with an abdomen injury.

Nice pick up for Oakland - Manaea has some good upside, but this year has been kind of a lost season. I think he's back and healthy.

Parra has less of a track record than Zobrist and despite his attempt this spring, doesn't play the infield in addition to the outfield. I think it's fair to say that Zobrist has more (at least perceived) value.

This probably does go some way toward defining the market return for Parra, though.

Not a bad comp. The market looks like teams better be ready to pony up a big starter prospect if they want to land an every day player.

Looks like Melvin trade ARam too soon. :ohwell

Part of me hopes that they do, as that may mean other teams will be willing to trade away their whole farm to win in one season, and the Brewers are at a point that they should take advantage of that.

Part of me hopes that they fall on their face, showing Attanasio the foolishness of trading away your bright future for a slight increase in the odds of winning in one year. All of this talent the Royals are trading away could keep them in the playoff hunt for years, but now they will likely be in the Brewers' boat in a few seasons. Of course, if he didn't learn the lesson from his own team, it's unlikely he'll learn from watching someone else.

Really, I don't care if they win or lose, I just hope the Brewers can somehow take advantage of it. No way in heck I would trade away a top-of-the rotation talent for Ben Zobrist. Please Melvin, get in on this bloodbath before all the meat is gone.

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."

Based on trades so far, either the Brewers are going to get quite a haul of prospects this year or Doug has way overplayed his hand and all the good ones have been traded already.

Exactly. Though it feels like if he waits any longer he'll get a pretty ugly dance partner. I'm thinking this is the peak time to trade. That's based strictly on my anxiety level.

If Attanasio doesn't learn his lesson now, he's never gonna learn his lesson. He's always going to believe that they are 1-2 aging veterans away from the WS. Whenever thr Brewers fall on their face, it'll be attributed to not having enough aging veterans on this team. He'll fight to the death trying to keep the "faces of the franchise" all the while trying to keep up the illusion of competing.

Who doesn't do it though really to some degree? It seems they're really going harder than most but it's commonplace for all teams to go for it. I guess Tampa is the only one who really haven't in recent years, and so far 0 titles.

If I've learned anything it is that no matter what we do people aren't going to be happy with it and any season that doesn't end in the World Series is a failure no matter why it happened.

Zobrist and Parra are nowhere near the same player and fit very different needs. Ones value has little to do with the others.

Ennder, I think you, me, and logan82 should start our own splinter group, because we seem to be the most rational and least over-reactionary around here.

The Royals biggest needs were 2B (Infante's .559 OPS) and corner OF (Gordon injured, Rios .625 OPS), and Zobrist can play all three of those positions. Parra can't play 2B - arguably the Royals biggest need now that they have their ace - so it's not comparable.

Yep. One has been the most versatile players for years with a career wRC+ of 119 while the other is a platoon corner outfielder with a wRC+ of 95. Not many teams are going to be swayed by Parra's BABIP driven numbers. Zobrist projects in the range of being .5 to .7 wins better than Parra over the rest of the season.

That said, I don't like this trade for the Royals. They would have been better off getting another starting pitcher.

First trade I've seen this season where I feel like the seller got a good return, hope things keep tipping toward a seller's market before the Brewers unload their main pieces.

Yea, you need another team to really want your player before trade discussions can even get started and there are going to be other sellers out there with players who might fit a bigger need. How much demand there is or Parra is hard to know.

While there aren't many bats on the market I think Zobrist moving helps grease the wheels on Parra because Zobrist seemed like #1 on everyone's list for a bat regardless of position, so now they have to move on. Zobrist has been such a hot name on the trade market for years now that I'm pretty sure the Parra haul won't be nearly that good.

Zobrist is a bigger name and can play 2B, but Parra is playing much better.
