Rattlers beat LumberKings to earn sweep

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers erased an early 3-0 deficit and defeated the Clinton LumberKings 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The win gave the Timber Rattlers a three-game sweep in the series.

 

Gianfranco Wawoe put the LumberKings (32-68 overall, 6-25 second half) in front with a solo home run in the top of the third. Clinton added to their lead with two more runs in the frame. A walk and a misplay on a bunt single put runners on second and third for the LumberKings. Martin Peguero knocked in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. Pat Leyland capped the inning with an RBI single and Clinton was up 3-0.

 

The Rattlers (34-66, 11-19) got one run back in the bottom of the third. Greg McCall doubled and took third on an error to start the inning. Tucker Neuhaus knocked in McCall with a sacrifice fly.

 

Wisconsin took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Francisco Castillo started the inning with a bunt single and McCall drew a walk. Neuhaus bunted both runners into scoring position. Omar Cotto hit a hard grounder to third and the ball hit the corner of the bag. The ball deflected off the base and into left field for a two-run double to tie the game 3-3. Carlos Leal put the Rattlers in front with a two-out RBI single to score Cotto.

 

David Carver, Wisconsin's starting pitcher, rebounded after the rough third inning and kept the LumberKings off the scoreboard for the remainder of his time in the game. The lefty went six innings, scattered eight hits, walked one, and struck out six to put himself in line for his first Midwest League victory.

 

McCall gave the Rattlers an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Sthervin Matos drew a leadoff walk and was bunted to second base by Castillo. McCall followed with a deep fly to the corner in right that he legged into his first professional triple. Matos scored on the play and the Rattlers were up 5-3.

 

Gian Rizzo took over for Carver in the top of the seventh and retired the first two batters he faced. However, Austin Cousino singled and Arby Fields doubled to drive in Cousino to pull Clinton back to within a run.

 

Neuhaus tacked on another insurance run for Wisconsin in the eighth inning. Wisconsin had runners at second and third with one out and the LumberKings brought the infield in on the grass. Neuhaus hit a high chopper over the mound and the only play Peguero had was to first base for the out. The RBI grounder by Neuhaus gave the Rattlers a 6-4 lead.

 

Clinton tried to rally in the top of the ninth as their first two batters of the game reached on an error and a single. But, a failed sacrifice bunt attempt ended on a popup to first. Rizzo concluded the game with a strikeout and a routine flyball to right. Rizzo earned his third save of the season with his performance on Sunday.

 

The sweep was the second in a three-game series by the Timber Rattlers this season. It was their first three-game sweep since an April 24-26 series against the Peoria Chiefs.

 

The LumberKings dropped their fifth straight game. They have lost sixteen of their last seventeen games.

 

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday and return to action with a game against the Peoria Chiefs on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Cody Ponce (0-1, 1.93) gets the start for the Timber Rattlers. Luis Perdomo (5-7, 2.89) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:05pm.

 

The first 1,000 fans to attend the game on Tuesday will receive a Timber Rattlers seat cushion courtesy of Hardee's. That's just part of Hardee's Night. There will also be several coupons and surprises from Hardee's. Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $13.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage and your choice of brat or hot dog. Omar Cotto covers the gaps well, he caught a ball in LC I didn't think he was going to get to, his 2B was off the 3rd base bag. Sthervin Matos (2-3,2B,BB) and Gregory McCall (2-3,2B,3B,BB) led the way offensively.

 

I'd equate Blake Allemand to Dustin DeMuth defensively, he's not going to hurt you but he's not going to give you anything extra defensively.

 

Alan Sharkey made a nice sliding catch on a popped up bunt attempt.

The Manatees Examiner had a detailed post on Saturday's doubleheader -- included are a few quotes from Manager Joe Ayrault

 

Game two of the doubleheader got underway at 10:11 p.m. St. Lucie picked up right where they left off in game one, scoring four times in the top of the first inning against Manatees starter Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff, who was making his first start since June 24 at Lakeland, had been on the disabled list with an oblique injury.

 

Technically, Woodruff never went on the DL, but was idle for a month, this is the first we've read of the nature of his injury.

 

Woodruff would give up a single to McNeil in the second, but made it through the inning. He was done after two innings of work.

 

“He was at a 35-pitch limit, trying to get him back after his injury,” said Ayrault. “A little bit of tough luck in there, but at least his stuff was there and he’s healthy. It was good to get him back in there.”

PENSACOLA, FL - The Shuckers came out swinging in the rubber match of the five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, clinching the series with a convincing 10-2 victory in the finale. Biloxi finished the game with 14 hits, six of those coming with runners in scoring position. Starter Jorge Lopez recorded the rotations third-straight quality start, joining Myles Jaye as the only Southern League pitcher to reach nine wins.

 

Five Shuckers collected multi-hit games, with Nick Shaw and Tyrone Taylor registering three knocks apiece. Victor Roache completed his mammoth series with another double, home run and three RBI.

 

Sunday was Biloxi's turn to plate the first run of the game in the first inning, getting out to an early, 1-0 lead. The Shuckers started the game with three consecutive singles by Nathan Orf (2x4, RBI, 2 R, BB), Nick Shaw (3x4, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) and Michael Reed (1x5, RBI, BB) to put up the first run of the game.

 

Pensacola (17-13) would not be outdone, scoring its fourth first-inning run of the five-game series to tie the game at the end of the first. Zach Vincej started off the frame with a double and came around to score on a single to left field by Jess Winker, who was thrown out trying to stretch the play to a double.

 

Jorge Lopez (9-4) mirrored Hobbs Johnson's start from Saturday by allowing a run in the first, then dominated the Blue Wahoos' lineup by setting down the next 11 men that came up to the plate.

 

The 22-year-old ran into trouble in the fifth, walking the leadoff man, Seth Mejias-Brean. Yovan Gonzalez singled two outs later, and Ryan Wright's pinch-hit single plated Mejias-Brean to cut the Shuckers' lead to two.

 

The Puerto Rico native allowed just the two runs on five hits, two walks and six strikeouts over six innings of work to pick up his 10th quality start of the season, and eight in his last nine starts. Shuckers' starters have recorded 39 quality starts in the team's inaugural season.

 

Biloxi (14-15) took the lead again, using a three-run home run off the bat of Victor Roache (2x5, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, 2B) in the third. Shaw singled with one out and a two-out walk by Nick Ramirez (1x4, 2 RBI, R) put two on for Roache, who deposited his second blast this series into Pensacola Bay beyond the left field wall.

 

Reed (13) and Roache (12) continued their on-base streaks in the series clincher. Roache capped off an impressive series by going 9-for-19 with two home runs, six RBI and five doubles against Pensacola.

 

The Shuckers opened up the game with a three-run sixth to take a five-run lead.

 

Tyrone Taylor (3x5, 2 R) and Adam Weisenburger (1x3, R, 2 BB) reached with one out and advanced 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Lopez to put runners on second and third with two outs. Orf was intentionally walked to load the bases for Shaw, who was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the frame. Reed followed with a two-run single to open up the lead to 7-2.

 

Jed Bradley (IP, BB), Manny Barreda (IP, H, SO) and Mike Strong (IP, SO) combined to toss the final three innings out of the bullpen to secure the victory.

 

Biloxi will have an off day on Monday before welcoming the Jackson Generals to MGM Park for the first time on Tuesday to begin a five-game series. Game one features a matchup of RHP Johnny Hellweg (0-3, 7.59) taking the mound for the Shuckers, while the Generals will send out RHP Dylan Unsworth (0-4, 6.53). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Storm Chasers Solo Shots Send Sox To 3-1 Loss

The Sky Sox offense was kept relatively quiet on Sunday afternoon as Omaha held Colorado Springs to just five hits in the Storm Chasers' 3-1 win before a crowd of 5,388 at Werner Park.

 

Starters Tyler Thornburg (2-7, 5.28) and Aaron Brooks (6-5, 3.71) each provided their teams with quality six-inning performances, though Brooks would fare slightly better with his ability to keep the ball in the park.

 

Pete Orr and Jason Rogers reached with a single and double respectively before Matt Clark's groundout to second allowed Orr to score from third with the game's first run in its first frame. The Sox took a 1-0 lead into the Omaha first but the Storm Chasers would quickly erase the deficit as Thornburg gave up three consecutive two-out singles, the last an RBI knock by Brett Eibner to score Whit Merrifield from second.

 

The game remained knotted at one through two and a half innings before Thornburg served up a solo homer to Eibner with two out in the Omaha third. The blast gave the Storm Chasers a 2-1 lead that would ultimately prove enough.

 

Brooks' day was done after tossing six innings of three-hit, shutout ball. The right-hander walked one batter while striking out two in the impressive effort.

 

The long ball would come back to haunt Thornburg once again in the sixth with Jose Martinez leading off the frame with a blast to straight away centerfield to extend the Storm Chasers lead to 3-1. The Sox starter would set down the next three batters in order before being replaced by Rob Wooten in the seventh. Despite giving up two dingers on the day, Thornburg turned in a quality start for Colorado Springs, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings.

 

Wooten and Jaye Chapman combined for two perfect innings to finish the afternoon for the Sky Sox pitching staff and give the offense a chance to rally.

 

Unfortunately the Storm Chasers bullpen was just as effective this day as a trio of Louis Coleman, Troy Patton and Michael Mariot (S, 7) twirled three combined innings of shutout baseball in relief of Brooks to secure the 3-1 for Omaha. The win improves the Chasers to 58-44 while Colorado Springs' third straight loss drops their record to 40-59 on the season.

 

The Sky Sox will look to salvage the final game of this four-game set in Omaha on Monday night as Josh Roenicke (5-7, 5.24) leads the way against Storm Chasers righty Yohan Pino (6-3, 5.26) with first pitch set for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) at Werner Park.

RHP Tyler Thornburg must be pretty miserable, questioning his big league status as a starter (which he's been successful in), yet knowing he's been shifted from long relief to an earned 7th inning relief role back to long relief / spot starter and now AAA "bide my time guy". But he's out of minor league options, so it'll be make-or-break in 2016 with Milwaukee (or elsewhere on a possible waive claim).

Osprey crush Brewers as 1st half of season winds down

A day after clinching its first Pioneer League North first-half title since 2011, the Missoula Osprey thumped the Helena Brewers, 11-1, at Kindrick Field.

 

The 11 runs were a season high for Missoula and were plenty for starter Yefrey Ramirez and the Osprey pitching staff. With an Orem loss, the Osprey (23-14) now hold a share of the best record in the Pioneer League.

 

Ramirez turned in a quality start in the victory, tossing the first six innings and allowing just one run on six hits and a walk while striking out three.

 

The Osprey scored four times in the third, four in the fifth, once in the seventh and twice in the ninth to set the new benchmark for runs. Isan Diaz highlighted the four-run third with a three-run homer. The round-tripper, which came as part of a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored, was his fifth of the season, and extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games.

 

Helena’s lone run came in the sixth inning on Steven Karkenny’s fifth home run of the year. Karkenny finished the game 2 for 3 with a run scored -- the homer and a double.

 

The Brewers will wrap up the first half of the 2015 season Monday with a 7:05 PM game (8:05 Central) against Missoula at Kindrick Legion Field.

Also making their Pioneer League debuts after stints in Maryvale were catcher Mitch Ghelfi (1-for-3 with a walk) and 19-year-old switch-hitting second baseman Jonathan Oquendo (0-for-4).

 

Four Brewers had four home runs prior to the game, but Steven Karkenny broke the tie with David Denson, Jake Gatewood, and Carlos Belonis. Karkenny's 5th tied him for 11th in the league.

Welcome back, 20-year-old RHP Miguel Diaz!

 

Two scoreless innings in his season debut (elbow fracture), the #13 MLB Pipeline Brewers' prospect has actually never pitched above the Maryvale level regardless. His 2014 Maryvale numbers were OK but not dazzling, but the offseason scouting word from those with Arizona Rookie League ties prompted quite a bit of buzz.

 

Three late-round draft picks followed Diaz nicely -- 38th round RHP Scott Grist, 35th round LHP Quintin Torres-Costa and 31st round RHP Colton Cross.

Beau Wallace, who struggled mightily defensively in his rookie days with Pittsburgh, helping to prompt his release and planned conversion to catcher by the Brewers, played his first game back at the hot corner for the Crew, something to follow there...
