Ramirez to Pittsburgh for Yhonathan Barrios; Goforth recalled

Yes, best wishes to Aramis. He actually really did live up to the contract and he was nothing but a professional in MKE.

Let's get ready to reeeeeeebuiiiiiilllllllldddddd!!!!! Any and every guy not named Arcia is on the table. Somewhat surprised ARam was the first to go, but get what you can. Heck, someone might give a C- prospect for Lohse....depends on how desperate they are.

Why wouldn't someone have traded for him? Yes he had a poor start to the year but so did many of the Brewers including the golden boy Lucroy (who still is sucking). The dude can hit and usually tears it up later in seasons. Good move for the Pirates.

Dominguez is a nice option, but how do we not give Rogers a long term audition at 3b? He's had 1 game there this year and had some questionable plays. But his bat is killing AAA, and he's done well at every stop. He was one of the game's best PH this year, too. He's paid his dues and needs to get some opportunity.

I'm not surprised he's gone. I'm happy he's gone. I figured it would be Parra or Lind to go first.

Dealing away a guy who's about 65 games from retirement hardly is a rebuild move. It saves a few bucks and gives a chance for a good look at Perez to see if he's a decent option there. Chances are Perez will put up better overall numbers than Ramirez will in Pittsburgh. Nobody's going to give anything for Lohse.

He may get a shot once Lind is traded, but 3B is never happening again.

Alright, I was trying to be optimistic.

I'm fine with the return. Barrios's K/9 is somewhat disturbing, but if he's only been pitching a year and he can throw 100 mph then there's potential there for a late-inning reliever, which would be great value.

Not sure why the Pirates were so aggressive in promoting him all the way to AAA. I would give him a couple years in the minors to learn how to pitch.

I like this deal for both clubs for reasons already stated. I personally think the Brewers should try to get the best single player they can from any team in any deal, following what the Cubs did last year when they got Addison Russell for Samardizja, or however you spell that crazy last name. I'm not saying Barrios is Russell, but for what Ramirez was and his relative trade value, getting a live-armed 23-year old kid with the ability to throw triple digits in the upper levels of the minor leagues is a pretty solid return.

And agreed with others, best wishes to Ramirez. I was very happy to follow what I believe to be a HOF career for a few years here in Milwaukee.

Intriguing arm. I'd say 3 million and a fringe prospect were in-line the highest hopes for a Ramirez trade, and at least this fringe prospect is both young and has had some success despite having little experience as a pitcher.

Happy for Aramis, happy with the return, but happiest that the org really has no playoff delusions. Aramis the rest of this year is likely to be a cery strong bat. I like Perez, but if what you care about is keeping win-today fans and vet players happy, you don't make this move. I'm much more convinced now that Parra and at least one vet pitcher are gone, and I'm hoping for more.

Dominquez is not a nice option...he has been overrated since he entered the league and was given to us for free for a reason. His SkySox stats skew his worth. Home splits .387/.433/.516/.949 vs Road splits .154/.228/.250/.478

But I do agree that if Lind is going to stay that JRogers needs some 3B time to see if that lovely bat can play there.

Good luck to Aramis, at least his last few months will be with a contender and in a familiar city.

I just cant take anyone serious who wants Pedro Alvarez.

THIS.

Pedro has 15! errors at 1B this season. thats more than DOUBLE the next guy, Jose Abreu, and triple the most in the NL, 5 from Mark Reynolds. Pedro has more errors on his career at 3B/1B than he has home runs.

http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/7/24/9030429/evaluating-the-newest-brewers-prospect-yhonathan-barrios

From Quinn Berry:

Perhaps surprisingly, Barrios has been pretty successful as a pitcher in his minor league career. Despite a small frame (5-11, 180), Yhonathan has an extremely live arm and can generate almost 100 miles per hour of velocity on his fastball. The offering has late sinking action which, when combined with the speed, makes it incredibly difficult to hit. The ball comes out freely and easily from his very simple and low-effort delivery.

Yhonathan’s off-speed pitchers are, predictably, far behind his heater. His change-up does exhibit some good fade, but he has a tendency to leave it up in zone. His slider has interesting movement into right-handers and away from lefties. However, he notably decreases his arm speed when throwing both pitches.

Overall, I think Barrios could be an impact reliever once he gets some pitching experience under his belt. Walks haven’t plagued Yhonathan’s development severely, but he has to work on control within the strike zone as well as learning how to pitch. The fact that Barrios has only struck out 6.6 batters per nine in his career indicates how little this guy knows about pitching. With his stuff, there is no other reason that he should not be dominating minor league hitters. The good news is that the intricacies of the game are meant to be learned and taught. You cannot teach a player to throw 100 miles per hour fastball with sinking movement.

It will be very interesting to see how the 23-year-old’s career progresses in Milwaukee. Don’t be surprised if the newest Brewers’ prospect is wreaking havoc on the league a few years from now. And even though it’s entirely possible that Barrios fails to overcome his lack of experience, the potential of a shutdown reliever is a pretty nice return for an aging and overpaid infielder.

Ramirez ended up being one of the better free agent contracts in Brewers history (yes, seriously). He gets to go finish his career with a contender, where he started his career, and the Brewers get a pitcher with some possible upside. Sounds good to me.

I agree. The Pirates know they are getting a half year rental with Rami retiring at the end of the season and we get a pitcher we can develop. Good luck and beat those Cardinals Aramis!

I think I like this move. For a guy who a month ago I didn't think they would be able to move, the got $3M in salary relief and a young guy with the potential to be pretty good. Sure he may never "find it," but at least the potential is there.

If he never makes it, and all we end up with is salary relief, it's probably worth the trade. If Barrios comes close to reaching his potential, it's a very good deal.
