Manatees have gone to a rain delay. They lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Omar Garcia singled, stole second and third and came in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Clint Coulter. They will try very hard to get at least one game in because it may require double headers on back to back days if both games are rained out here.

Final: Biloxi 1, Pensacola 2

Shuckers slam five doubles, fall short again in Pensacola

Victor Roache and Michael Reed collect two doubles apiece in the loss

Biloxi Shuckers

Michael Reed doubled twice on Thursday and has reached base six times over the last two days (Benton Reed Photography)

PENSACOLA, FL - The Shuckers tallied five hits, all doubles, in Thursday night's game two of the five-game set against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, but fell 2-1 at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Victor Roache supplied his second with two outs in the ninth, but pinch runner Brent Suter was thrown out from right-center after a brief stumble around third to end the game.

The loss dropped Biloxi to 19-10 in one-run games, and 8-13 in July - the most in any month this season. The Shuckers have dropped four of five and 13 of 19. Pensacola is off to their best start in a half in franchise history and have won 11-straight home games. Roache is 4-for-8 in the series with a homer, three doubles and three RBI in the series so far.

As is commonplace, the Shuckers made things interesting in the ninth against Blue Wahoos' reliever Miguel Celestino. After Orlando Arcia (0x4) lined out and Michael Reed (2x4, RBI, 2 2B) struck out to start the inning, Taylor Green (0x0, BB) worked an 0-2 count into a walk to put the tying run on base for Roache (2x4, 2 2B). Suter came on to run for Green and was off to the races as Roache hit a drive that one-hopped the wall in right center. Biloxi third base coach/manager Carlos Subero frantically waved Suter home, but the runner was caught at home to end the game.

Biloxi starter Brooks Hall (7-6) coasted through the first three innings, allowing just two hits to Blue Wahoos' leadoff man Zach Nincej and striking out three. However, Pensacola broke through in the fourth off of the 25-year-old, taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch to Bryson Smith to start the inning, followed by back-to-back singles by Marquez Smith and Juan Duran to plate the first run of the game. The South Carolina native allowed two runs in five innings on six hits and five strikeouts in his first start since July 10.

Pensacola (17-10) struck again in the fifth, using a RBI triple by Bryson Smith to bring home Daniel Wright to put the Shuckers in a 2-0 deficit.

Biloxi (11-15) utilized two doubles in the sixth to cut the Pensacola lead to one. Nathan Orf (1x4, R, 2B) started the frame with a double and came home on Reed's second double of the game two batters later. Reed has 19 doubles and has reached base safely six times in the first two games at Pensacola.

The one run would be the only offense the Shuckers could muster against Blue Wahoos' starter Daniel Wright (7-7), who allowed the one run on four hits, a walk and five strikeouts on 99 pitches in eight innings, retiring the final seven batters he faced after the run-scoring double by Reed.

Manny Barreda struck out five in his two innings of work out of the bullpen. Jeremy Horst made his Shuckers and Brewers' debut, working a perfect eighth with two strikeouts for Biloxi.

Biloxi will try to avoid dropping its second series in its last four attempts with a win on Friday. RHP Tyler Wagner (6-5, 2.53) will take the mound for the Shuckers, while the Blue Wahoos will send out RHP Tim Adleman (6-7, 2.36). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:20 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Box Score

Tough loss for the Shuckers with the tying run getting thrown out at he plate. Probably would prefer to see Josh Fellhauer pinch running there than a pitcher, but I guess the bench was getting pretty thin by that point. Nice to see Victor Roache starting to heat up. 4-for-8 with three doubles and a home run in his last two games. Average up to .244.

Biloxi Game Log

Solid Shuckers debut for Horst

Pensacola Bottom of the 8th

Pitching Change: Jeremy Horst replaces Manny Barreda, batting 5th.

Seth Mejias-Brean flies out to center fielder Michael Reed.

Kyle Skipworth strikes out swinging.

Sean Buckley strikes out swinging.

Kernels continue hold over the Rattlers in 6-5 win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Alan Sharkey had two hits, including an RBI triple, and scored a run for the Timber Rattlers in Cedar Rapids on Thursday night. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-5 on Thursday night at Perfect Game Field. The Kernels have won fourteen of the fifteen meetings between the Midwest League clubs this season. Wisconsin had a pair two-run leads in the game, but could not hang onto either advantage.

Greg McCall put Wisconsin (31-66 overall, 8-19 second half) in front in the first inning. The Wisconsin catcher lined a two-out double to left-center to drive in Alan Sharkey and Elvis Rubio for a 2-0 lead.

The Kernels (57-41, 16-12) took the lead in the bottom of the third. Rattlers starting pitcher Eric Hanhold hit Tanner English to start the inning. English stole second and scored on an single by Nick Gordon. Hanhold got the first out of the inning on a strikeout, but Zack Larson tripled to drive in Gordon and tie the game. Cedar Rapids went in front on a sacrifice fly by Rafael Valera.

The Timber Rattlers responded with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth against Kernels starter Zack Tillery. Luis Aviles started the charge with a double. Gregory Munoz cracked a single to center and Aviles scored on the play while Munoz took second on the throw to the plate. Blake Allemand was next and his single to center scored Munoz with the go-ahead run. Sharkey kept the rally going with a triple into the corner in right and Allemand scored for a 5-3 lead.

Cedar Rapids came back in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game against reliever Luke Curtis. English hit a home run to left to lead off the inning and Wisconsin's lead was down to a run. Curtis got the next two outs, but hit Zack Larson. A wild pitch put Larson in scoring position. Then, Valera drove in Larson with a single and the game was even.

Devin Williams, who took over for Curtis in the bottom of the sixth, got into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Gordon drew a walk to start the frame. Daniel Corcino followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Williams got the first out with a strikeout. The, the Rattlers elected to intentionally walk Valera to load the bases and set up a double play. The strategy was foiled when Williams grazed Pat Kelly on a 1-2 pitch to force in Gordon with the run to give the Kernels a 6-5 lead.

Williams would retire the next two batters, but the damage had been done.

Wisconsin couldn't muster a threat to score the tying run in the final three innings and they fell to once again to the Kernels.

The Timber Rattlers return home to take on the Clinton LumberKings in the first game of a three-game series on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Luis Ortega (1-7, 5.14) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Tyler Herb (4-7, 4.70) is set to start for the LumberKings, who were no-hit by the Peoria Chiefs on Thursday night. The LumberKings have also lost thirteen of their last fourteen games and are 6-22 in the second half. Game time is 7:05pm.

Calling all crime fighters! Batman and The Flash are bringing together the Justice League in the Fox Communities Credit Union Fox Club before Friday's game. Contact the Timber Rattlers Box Office to learn how you can meet The Dark Knight and The Fastest Man Alive. They will be around during the game to meet fans and pose for pictures, too. The first 1,000 children 12 & under to attend the game will receive a cape from Neuroscience Group. Children 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the postgame Fireworks display on this North Shore Bank/Y100 Family Night.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action.

MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will televise the game starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may watch the game on that platform.

Wisconsin Boxscore

You know I could say that the Rattlers gave the game away in about 80% of their losses this year and this game was no different. Silly outs on the bases, a hit batsmen to push through the go ahead run... *sigh*. Even without Harrison, Gatewood, and Denson this one of the better Rattler teams from a raw talent standpoint, there's no just no consistency and by extension performance to go with that talent. I've talked quite a bit about the pitchers (no surprise there) and answered questions regarding the Sthervin Matos/Tucker Neuhaus debate most of the season, but Elvis Rubio, Francisco Castillo, Brandon Diaz, Dustin DeMuth, Alan Sharkey, and even Luis Aviles (since his return) all have various tools they can lean on. Unfortunately this group has never really got it going together at the plate and is hitting a combined .234 which is 2nd from the bottom in the league, only better than Beloit.

I'll use Matos as an example, he's a wonderful defender but he's hitting just .201 and as Chris pointed today he's something like 3 for 52 or 53 against Cedar Rapids this season. That's an incredibly Ben Sheets like .058 at the plate, it has to be some kind of head thing with him and this team, there's simply no other rational explanation for being that bad against 1 opponent. Taking out Cedar Rapids he would be 53 for 222 or .239 which isn't great, but is a hell of a lot better than .201.

I didn't forget Blake Allemand in my assessment above, he's just been pretty average when I've seen him in the field and I haven't made a determination about him as a player yet.

None of the pitchers were great and 1 of Devin Williams 3 walks was intentional, but he also hit a batter. Alan Sharkey (2-5) hitting the 2 hole and Luis Aviles (3-4,2B) had good nights at the plate.

I'll give some props to Nick Gordon, the 5th overall pick in last year's draft for the Twins. He looked pretty lost early in the season when I saw him on TV (late April/early May) but he's been steadily getting better all year and is starting to make some "wow" plays on occasion.

And if you can correctly pronounce the winning pitcher's name in 1 try I'd be thoroughly impressed.

Looks like 2013 3rd round RHP Barrett Astin (Broxton deal, Reds) will face Biloxi in the finale of this Pensacola series Sunday afternoon. You'll see at the link that Astin has had a nice season split between High-A and AA.

RH reliever Kevin Shackelford (also Broxton deal) hasn't pitched since June 10th, but was just activated from the disabled list.

Brewers Overcome 6-Run Deficit, Win 9-8

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (16-17) made a six-run comeback on Thursday night against the Missoula Osprey (19-14) to win 9-8 and split their two-game series.

Helena took the first lead of the night, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Steven Karkenny singled and scored on the RBI double of Jake Gatewood. Gatewood would go 1-for-2 adding two runs scored before having to leave the game after six innings with a wrist injury. He was hit by a fastball from Bo Takahashi on the left wrist, but would finish the inning on the basepaths and came in to score. He did not return defensively and Jose Cuas would take over at short.

Trailing 8-2 going to the sixth, Helena mounted their largest comeback in a win of the season. Four runs crossed the plate in the sixth, highlighted by a George Iskenderian RBI double. Iskenderian would go 4-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. It was the first four-hit performance of his professional career.

Cutting the deficit to one going to the ninth, Cody Clark (0-3) recorded the first two outs of the inning for Missoula and looked to be in cruise control. He then surrendered three straight hits to the Brewers to tie the game, 8-8. Dustin Houle hit an RBI single to right with men on second and third and David Denson trotted in from third for what would be the game-winning run on a throwing error by the catcher, Matt Jones.

Chad Reeves (1-0) picked up his first professional win in his second year in the Brewers' system, pitching the final two innings and throwing shutout baseball.

The Brewers now head back to Helena for a two-game series with the Billings Mustangs. First pitch on Friday from Kindrick is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

VIDEO: Highlights (and some lowlights) from the early portions of this game via KTVH, including a poorly-played ball in right field by Carlos Belonis

Helena Box Score

Nice combined seven-inning effort by RHP Bubba Blau (5 IP, 3 R, 2 ER) and LHP Chad Reeves to allow the comeback to take place; starter RHP Milton Gomez has scuffled, as he did in Wisconsin.

Hopefully Jake Gatewood's departure was just precautionary; Steven Karkenny, an award-winning defensive outfielder in college and converted to first base by the Brewers, started at third base in his prior game and subbed there in this one.

As Brian Anderson always says, you have to "secure the out" at first base on a strikeout --

Walk-off win!!

Final: Colorado Springs 2, Nashville 1

Another evening without the normally fully-detailed Sky Sox site game summary...

Sky Sox beat Nashville in last at-bat for second straight day

By Aaron Reiss, Colorado Springs Gazette

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox won their second straight game by walk-off Thursday.

Juan Centeno singled to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Kyle Wren and seal a 2-1 win over the Nashville Sounds (45-54). The two teams split a four-game series.

Two batters before, Colorado Springs' Matt Clark singled to center off Phil Coke to drive in a runner from second base and tie the score at one in the ninth inning.

Cook took the loss.

Nashville led early, after Jason Pridie hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning to drive in Craig Gentry. Pridie had nine RBIs in the series.

Reliever Rob Wooten earned the win for Colorado Springs (40-56). He went two innings, giving up two hits and no runs.

The Sky Sox now travel to Omaha for a four-game series.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Another nice night for Tyler Cravy in the home ballpark - 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K. Cravy has similarly effective lines home and away, but this was only his 5th home start (ten road starts, quirk of the schedule and his brief call-ups).

3B Matt Dominguez doubled, singled, and walked, his 3rd straight two-hit game.

Colorado Springs Game Log

Via the Nashville site --

Phil Coke threw a scoreless eighth, but ran into trouble in the ninth as he aimed to complete the two-inning save. Logan Schafer led off the frame with a single and next batter Jason Rogers walked. Matt Clark then singled to plate Schaefer, knocking Coke from the game and tying the score up.

R.J. Alvarez entered the game with runners on the corners and zero outs. He would strike out Matt Dominguez before Juan Centeno singled to drive in the winning run. Both runs were charged to Coke who suffered his first loss of the season.

Final: AZL Brewers 1, AZL Giants 0

Maryvale Box Score

Combined four-hit shutout for three 22-year-old non-drafted pitchers, in order -- LHP Brad Kuntz, RHP Jose Flores, and LHP Shawn Clowers, please click the box and then their names for details and YTD yumminess, as this non-drafted class continues to impress, regardless of age advantage. This bodes well for a deeper quality staff at Wisconsin next year, with more options for management to choose from. Next year's minor league spring training is going to be ultra-competitive for spots, moreso than we've seen in the Link Report era.

Veteran LHP Ricky Romero made the rehab start for the Giants.

Brewers managed just five singles and four walks, one each for CF Trent Clark, RF Yerald Martinez, and 3B Jorge Quiterio.

Demi (that's all we need, like Cher, Madonna, Fabio) was 0-for-4, two K's.

Late Heroics Send Sox To Second Straight Walk-Off

Clutch Clark and Centeno Complete Sky Sox Rally In 2-1 Win

Juan Centeno went 0-for-3 before knocking in the winning run in Thursday night's 2-1 walk-off win over the Sounds. (Paat Kelly photo)

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Juan Centeno sent 7,696 Sky Sox fans home with a second consecutive walk-off win, defeating the Nashville Sounds 2-1 on Thursday night at Security Service Field.

Starters Tyler Cravy and Zach Neal turned in stellar performances for their respective sides as neither right-hander allowed more than four base hits and two walks. Cravy would allow his lone run in the very first frame as the Sounds scored without the benefit of a base hit. Back-to-back walks to Craig Gentry and Joey Wendle opened the contest before Ryan Roberts' fly out to right allowed both runners to advance into scoring position. Jason Pridie would once again hurt his former team with a sac fly RBI to plate Gentry and give Nashville a 1-0 lead they would hold until decisive ninth inning.

Neal held the Sox offense scoreless through seven impressive innings of work, issuing two free passes and four hits while striking out four. The Colorado Springs offense would ground into four double plays during Neal's time on the mound to help the starter out of a few jams along the way.

Cravy dazzled in his first Sox start since returning from a two-week big league stint in Milwaukee. The 2015 PCL All-Star gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out three over six strong frames.

The lefty-righty tandem of Michael Kirkman and Rob Wooten (3-1, 6.30) combined to twirl three innings of shutout ball in relief of Cravy to keep Colorado Springs within a run of pulling even late in the contest.

Sounds reliever Phil Coke (0-1, 9.82) gave Nashville a scoreless eighth before returning to the mound in the ninth. Logan Schafer and Jason Rogers worked the left-hander, reaching on a base hit and a base on balls respectively to bring the always dangerous Matt Clark to the plate with no outs. Clark delivered, lacing an RBI single into centerfield to score Schafer with the game-tying run.

Sounds manager Steve Scarsone immediately pulled Coke in favor of the right-hander R.J. Alvarez with Matt Dominguez due up next. The move paid off as Alvarez set the slugging third baseman down on strikes, bringing Juan Centeno up in the game's most pivotal moment. The catcher faced a one-out, runners on the corners situation in the bottom of the ninth after having gone 0-for-3 with a flyout and two double play groundouts.

Centeno would follow in his fellow catcher's lead, lining a base hit over the shallowly drawn infield to score pinch-runner Kyle Wren with the game-winner. The Sox second straight walk-off earned Colorado Springs a 2-1 victory and a series-split with the Sounds. The Sky Sox win improves them to 40-56 on the season while dropping Nashville to 45-54.

Colorado Springs will look to make it three-in-a-row on Friday night as they begin a four-game set with the Omaha Storm Chasers. Last week's PCL pitcher of the week Hiram Burgos (2-1, 3.51) is slated to start for the Sky Sox with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) from Werner Park in Omaha.
