Peralta idea

DHonks

I had this typed in the Lohse DFA'd thread, but I decided to create a new thread.

With this season seeming a waste (barring a 2011-type July/August), I'd consider letting Peralta work out of the pen for the rest of the year. I think it would benefit him to learn to attack hitters better, trust his stuff, and finish hitters. To be honest, that's why I like the Cardinals' plan of letting pitchers work out of the pen before transitioning to the rotation. Additionally, working out of the pen as a 2-inning reliever would let us limit his innings. If not Lohse, I'd consider Letting Cravy, Thorny, or Wagner start to give the player a look for next year.

I would DFA Broxton, not Lohse right now.

It makes some sense to me... although prior to this year, Peralta didn't seem to have anything particularly wrong as a starter. In fact, I'd say he was breaking out in 2014 (17-11, 3,35 ERA), a reliable #2 starter.

The 1-5 record reflects the problems the Brewers had early in the season, but the 4.00 ERA is still lower than from 2013, although his K numbers have dropped. Jimmy Nelson and Mike Fiers look like reliable #3 starters for now - but Nelson might develop more. Jungmann, of course, is looking like a #1 or #2.

Peralta got a total of 7 runs of support in his 5 losses. Starters are so much more valuable than relievers.

"I would DFA Broxton, not Lohse right now",

Again a bad idea. Broxton's FIP is 3.64. He has a strikeout per inning and a 4-1 K to walk ratio. In short his ERA is not reflective of how he's throwing. He's not allowed a run in 5 straight appearances. There's not much trade value right now but as a waiver deal in late August if he continues to put up zeroes? That's a lot more likely than running Lohse out there.

I have to admit that idea really doesn't make any sense to me. If you think Peralta is losing his rotation spot you have lost your mind. He has been in the rotation for years and has proven to be effective.

First, I would be very careful with him. This is a lost season, no reason to rush him back. Working out of the pen would be counter-productive in my opinion. I think he would rely on his FB even more coming out of the pen. As a starter, he will be "forced" to get comfortable/better throwing his secondary stuff.

I'd be fine with that but I think the simpler route is just to put him in the mop up role so that's what they'll do. Someone will probably have some kind of injury at some point for him to pick up a few spot starts.

Hmmm...that wasn't said once. He's our Ace and has been since the end of 2013. If you look back over his history, I've been one of his biggest backers. I was looking at it as a young pitcher that:

a) coming off injury and trying to re-build stamina in a meaningly half season

b) a pitcher that has a tremendous slider but still hasn't learned to fully harness it as a strikeout pitch.

c) enables us to get an extended look at another potential prospect

I agree with the notion that this makes no sense. He's our best pitcher by far at this point. Sure, if we want to get the #1 overall pick we could do this. Just keep lohse in there and put peralta in the bullpen. I think the rest of this season is extremely important as we need to evaluate if he can harness his talent that he showed last season or if he will be inconsistent. If he can't continue last year's #2 starter stats I would try to include him in the fire sale continuing this offseason while he still is young and has great value.

Did we forget he almost touches triple digits, is a big, strong workhorse and produces a ton of ground balls with a great change?

Rosiak says the Brewers are going with a 6 man rotation for a turn to get the Brewers to the trade deadline. Melvin is trying to trade Lohse and/or Garza according to Haudricourt. No takers for obvious reasons.

6 man rotation for the rest of the year in theory doesn't bother me at all. Reduce the innings strain, let Lohse pitch and lose.

Completely agree. Why not let him pitch? I guess I don't see a good reason to dump him. Maybe he gets on a hot streak and we can trade him for a bag of balls and some cash. If he blows like he has the rest of the year, we get a better draft pick and it takes some innings off the young guys. Make him work for the rest of his contract.
