Manatees win game 1 5-2. Cy Sneed went the distance. Manatees scored all 5 runs in the 4th, mainly with small ball. The big hit was a bases loaded two out single by Angel Ortega that gave the Manatees the lead. I will link this game with the second game later. Probably in the morning.

Cedar Rapids pulls away from Wisconsin

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a close game and went on to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-2.

 

Cedar Rapids (55-41 overall, 14-12 second half) got on the scoreboard first. Sean Miller singled to start the third inning, but was erased at second on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Tanner English. The Kernels sent English on the first pitch to Nick Gordon and it paid off for them. Gordon laced a double to left-center and English raced home from first for a 1-0 lead.

 

Wisconsin (31-64, 8-17) answered back in their next at bat. Alan Sharkey doubled to start the top of the fourth inning. Elvis Rubio, who had two hits in the game, knocked in Sharkey with a one-out single to tie the game 1-1.

 

But, the Kernels retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with three consecutive two-out singles. Brian Navarreto started the rally with a bloop single to right. Austin Diemer followed with a single. Pat Kelly smashed a grounder up the middle and shortstop Blake Allemand made a diving attempt, but the ball deflected off Allemand's glove and into center to allow Navarreto to score.

 

The Rattlers got the game back to even in the top of the fifth. Sthervin Matos tripled to start the frame, but was still at third base with two outs. Luis Aviles drove a single into center and Matos scored.

 

English put the Kernels back in front in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff homer.

 

Cedar Rapids added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Wisconsin starting pitcher David Carver, who was making his Midwest League debut, walked the first two batters and reliever Scott Lieser took over on the mound. Lieser got the first out on a popup, but Kelly lined a single to left-center to score one run. A misplay on the hit allowed a second run to score and Kelly to take third base. Sean Miller made the Rattlers pay for the mistake with a single to drive home Kelly and the lead grew to 6-2.

 

Jorge Felix pitched a scoreless seventh inning to maintain that lead. Felix allowed two runs on five hits and struck out seven over his seven innings to put himself in line for his fifth win of the season.

 

The Rattlers got two runners on with two outs in the top of the ninth inning against reliever Josh Bard, but he ended the game with a strikeout.

 

Wisconsin is 1-12 in thirteen games against the Kernels this season.

 

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Perfect Game Field. David Burkhalter (3-5, 4.07) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids runs Ethan Mildren (2-1, 2.20) to the mound. Game time is 12:05pm.

 

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:45am. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

The Brewers scored five runs in the first inning as they rolled to a 10-3 victory. Junior Flores started for the Brewers and went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out eight. Juan Diaz followed with 2.2 scoreless and Maiker Pinto tossed a scoreless ninth.

 

Right fielder Anderson Jesus had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Second baseman Julio Mendez was 4-for-6 with a double. Ignacio Otaño was 3-for-5 with a walk, though he did have his 22nd error of the season in this one. Catcher Sandy Martinez also added three hits.

Nathan Orf delivered the walk-off single in the ninth inning on Tuesday night at MGM Park (M.K. Krebs)

 

BILOXI, MS – It seems like whenever the Shuckers need a clutch hit, it’s never the same batter, twice. Tuesday’s heroics belonged to Nathan Orf, as the third baseman drove home Adam Weisenburger to send the Shuckers, and a crowd of 3,190 at MGM Park, home happy with a 5-4 victory over the Mobile BayBears.

 

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Biloxi, and ends the six-game home stand with a 2-4 record. The walk-off was the fifth at MGM Park in 18 games, but first in the ninth inning. The Shuckers improved to a league-best 19-9 in one-run

 

Weisenburger (0x2, R, 2 BB) started the ninth with a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Shaw (1x2, BB). Tyrone Taylor (0x1) was hit by a pitch to put two on for Orf, who sent a shot down the left field line to bring Weisenburger around to score the game-winning run.

 

Making his third minor league rehab start, Wily Peralta allowed just one run in his five innings of work, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out five on 74 pitches – 48 for strikes – in the no decision. Over the two Biloxi outings, Peralta surrendered just one run in 8.2 innings, eight strikeouts and two walks.

 

Biloxi (11-13) opened up the scoring early, plating two runs in the first to jump out to an early lead. Orf (2x3, RBI, 2 R, BB) started things by drawing a walk and came around to score all the way from first on a double by Josh Fellhauer (2x4, RBI) to put the Shuckers up, 1-0, after two batters. Orlando Arcia (1x3, 2 R, BB) reached first on a fielder’s choice bringing up Michael Reed (1x3, RBI, 3B) with one out. Arcia reached third on two wild pitches with Reed at the plate, before the outfielder tripled to right to give Biloxi a two-run advantage.

 

Mobile (14-10) grabbed a run in the second on Rudy Flores’ second home run on the series to start the frame, but Peralta would retire the next three batters to manage the damage and keep the Shuckers lead at one.

 

The Shuckers were back at it again in the third, putting up two more runs to extend the lead to three. Orf led off the frame by being hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch to Arcia, who drew a one-out walk, and came around to score on a RBI single by Nick Ramirez (1x4, RBI). Arcia advanced to third on the Ramirez single and scored on an infield hit by Victor Roache (1x4, RBI).

 

Manny Barreda (0.2 IP, 2 R – 0 ER – H, BB, SO) was the first to come out of the bullpen in relief of Peralta to start the sixth. After getting Jack Reinheimer to bounce out to short to start the inning, the righty walked Zach Borenstein to put a runner on for Gabriel Guerrero, who hit a liner to center that was misplayed by Reed, allowing Borenstein to score from first and Guerrero to reach third on the error. A strikeout to Flores gave Barreda two outs, but a single by Mark Thomas scored Guerrero and brought the Shuckers’ lead to one.

 

Carlos Subero called upon Mike Strong (1.1 IP, H, BB, SO) to clean up the inning, and the lefty walked the first man he faced pinch hitter Stewart Ijames, but got Tom Belza to ground out to second to end the inning.

 

Jacob Barnes (W, 2-4, 2 IP, R, 2 H, BB, 2 SO) finished off the game by working the final two innings. After setting down the side in order in the eighth, the 25-year-old allowed back-to-back singles with one out in the ninth to Belza and Sean Jamieson, and a walk to Socrates Brito loaded the bases, and a RBI fielder’s choice by Reinheimer scored Belza to tie the game at four.

 

Mobile reliever Adam Miller (2-5) surrendered the game-winner in the ninth and suffered the loss.

 

The Shuckers will take to the road for a five-game set against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos starting on Wednesday night. RHP Johnny Hellweg (0-2, 6.23) will make his third start of the season for Biloxi, taking on Pensacola’s LHP Wandy Peralta (5-7, 5.72). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:20 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Five-Run Fourth Inning the Difference to Start Doubleheader

Viera, Fla. - For the third consecutive start, Cy Sneed would go seven innings but this time, it would be all that was required as he earned the first complete game of his professional career to give the Brevard County Manatees (11-13, 40-53 overall) a 5-2 win over the Tampa Yankees (12-12, 46-48 overall) Tuesday in Game One of a doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium.

 

The game would be rather uneventful following a one hour, 24 minute rain delay until the fourth inning when the Yankees seized the initiative with two out in the top half of the inning. Dustin Fowler was the first Yankee to reach with a flare to left field. Mike Ford followed with a double that went over Omar Garcia's head in center to plate the first run for Tampa. Ford would then come home on a double by Dante Bichette Jr. Sneed would escape further damage when he induced a groundball forecout at second from Miguel Andujar.

 

The Manatee response in the bottom half of the inning began with a leadoff walk to Chris McFarland. He would move to third with some aggressive baserunning on a single by Clint Coulter, who would advance to second on the throw. Garrett Cooper followed with a base hit knocked down on the edge of the outfield grass by Tyler Wade at shortstop. Wade had no play at any base, which allowed McFarland to score to bring the Manatees within one. After Taylor Brennan struck out, Michael Ratterree pushed a sacrifice bunt up the first base line that ended with all runners safe and Coulter scoring to tie the game. Following a Jose Pena flyout, Paul Eshleman worked a walk to load the bases for Angel Ortega. Ortega would flick a base hit up the middle into center to plate two runs and give Brevard County the lead. Omar Garcia followed with a chopper to short that he was able to beat out, allowing Eshleman to score the final run of the inning. The infield single chased Yankee starter Gabe Encinas. Reliever Chris Smith would get a flyout from Chris McFarland to end the frame.

 

Tampa's best and last chance to get back in the game in the top of the seventh with Sneed aiming for the complete game. The inning started with a walk to Bichette, followed by an Andujar base hit. Sneed then coaxed a grounder to third that Brennan took to the bag for the forceout and when Kyle Higashioka then hit a line drive to Brennan, he doubled Andujar off at second to seal the win.

 

Sneed gave up just the two runs on six hits, striking out five and walking one on 89 pitches, 66 of them for strikes to earn the first complete game of his professional career.

 

Offensively, Cooper had the 'Tees lone multi-hit game, extending his hitting streak to seven consecutive games.

Cy Sneed had issued a walk in his first inning of work for the Manatees and the walk in the 7th here was his first since then, a span of around 24 innings. Final line: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 8/4 GO/FO The critical play in the Manatees' 4th: With Chris McFarland at first after a walk, Clint Coulter lined a single to left, Chris McFarland went to 3rd and the throw was off line. On the throw, Clint Coulter went to second. At the time, the Manatees trailed 2-0 so this put the tying run at 2nd. Many times this year, aggressive base running has backfired on the Manatees but this time it worked.

Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (12-13, 41-53 overall) scored three times in the second inning en route to a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Yankees (12-13, 46-49 overall) in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Garrett Cooper lined a single to right field to lead off the inning. Taylor Brennan then drilled a double down the right field line. Cooper scored on the Brennan double and tied the game at one. Jose Pena lined a base hit up the middle and plated Brennan. Rafael Neda stepped up and singled through the right side. After a Steven Halcomb sacrifice bunt, Angel Ortega recorded an RBI with a grounder to short.

 

Zach Hirsch (1-0, 3.60 ERA) earned the win in his Brevard County debut. He tossed five innings and allowed two runs on five. Hirsch did not walk a man and struck out one. He unofficially threw 79 pitches and 54 for strikes.

 

Eric Wooten (0-2, 3.14 ERA) took the loss for Tampa. He lasted just four innings in his spot start and gave up three runs on six hits.

Preston Gainey tossed two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh to earn his third save of the year.

 

Brevard County will start a four-game series with the St. Lucie Mets tomorrow night. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (7-2, 4.15 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Manatees. The Mets will send RHP Rob Whalen (4-5, 3.39 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 in St. Lucie.

No. 3 prospect injured while running bases for Rookie-level Helena

Monte Harrison suffered a broken ankle on Tuesday night, sidelining the Brewers' No. 3 prospect in what he expected to be his first full professional season.

 

In the first inning of Rookie-level Helena's 5-1 over Orem, the 19-year-old outfielder walked, stole second base and was rounding third on a single by Steven Karkenny when, according to the Helena Independent Record, he appeared to slip on wet grass. Harrison's foot was pointing in the wrong direction following the fall, the newspaper reported.

 

He was carried from the field on a stretcher but was in good spirits after receiving treatment.

 

The Missouri native was taken in the second round of the 2014 Draft out of Lee's Summit West High School and posted a .402 on-base percentage with 32 stolen bases in 34 tries in 50 games in the Rookie-level Arizona League last summer.

 

Harrison struggled with an aggressive assignment to Class A Wisconsin at the beginning of this season, batting .148 with 77 strikeouts in 46 games. Since coming to the Pioneer League in mid-June, he'd established himself at the plate.

 

Through 28 games, he's batting .299 with a .410 on-base percentage and 14 steals in 16 attempts. Harrison has had six games with at least two hits, including a five-hit performance on July 3.

Brewers series with 5-1 win

Helena Brewers

 

The Helena Brewers (15-16) topped the Orem Owlz (20-13) 5-1 on Tuesday at Kindrick Field to split their four-game series.

 

Christian Trent (2-1) was outstanding in the start, throwing five shutout innings and striking out four batters.

 

The Brewers took the first lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. David Denson doubled off Aaron Rhodes (0-1) and scored when Dustin Houle doubled right behind him. Houle was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double.

 

Helena then added four late runs, scoring three in the seventh and one in the eighth. George Iskenderian added a double and a run in the eighth, collecting his second hit of the game.

 

Jordan Yamamoto earned his first professional save, throwing the last four frames for the Brewers. The league-leader in strikeouts added three more on Tuesday to bring his season tally to 36.

 

The win gave the Brewers their fourth win in seven outings against the Owlz this year.

 

The Brewers now head to Missoula for a two-game series with the Osprey starting Wednesday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Orf makes the Shuckers walk-off winners in series finale

BILOXI -- It was a nail biter at MGM Park on Tuesday night as the Biloxi Shuckers went into the bottom of the ninth tied 4-4 with the Mobile Baybears. A hit down the third base line by Shuckers second baseman Nathan Orf brought catcher Adam Weisenburger home, sealing the victory, 5-4. The win ends a three-game losing streak for the Shuckers.

 

"It’s always great to be on the winning side, especially after that three-game skid, which is something we are not used to,” Orf said. “This team has a lot of character and it feels good to win.

 

Orf said he didn’t allow his emotions to get the best of him during his last at bat.

 

“The fans got behind me,” he said. "I think I was more excited than I was feeling the pressure on me. Our fans have been great and they kind of pulled me up.”

 

The Shuckers struck first as right fielder Josh Fellhauer doubled in his first at bat, bringing Orf around the bases to give the Shuckers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Fellhauer’s double set the tone for the Shuckers.

 

“We’ve been coming off some slow starts and we wanted to get on top in the first inning and see what would happen,” he said. “We didn’t want to get in the hole again. We head to Pensacola next and they have been playing some good baseball in the second half. Hopefully, we have some momentum going into the series."

 

Center fielder Michael Reed followed Fellhauer’s lead with a triple that brought in the Shuckers' second run as shortstop Orlando Arcia scored from third base.

 

BayBears first baseman Rudy Flores led off the top of the second with a solo home run, his second of the series.

 

The hot streak continued for the Shuckers in the bottom of the third when first baseman Nick Ramirez brought the team's third run on a line-drive single and left fielder Victor Roache closed the inning with another RBI single, bringing the score to 4-1 going into the top of the fourth.

 

The Shuckers lost some of their momentum going into the top of the sixth as an error proved to be costly. Gabriel Guerrero took a shot to centerfield that was dropped by Reed, allowing left fielder Zach Borenstein to score. Catcher Mark Thomas brought Guerrero home on single to bring the BayBears within one run.

 

Manny Barreda relieved Shuckers starting pitcher Wily Peralta in the sixth. Barreda retired two batters before being replaced by left-hander Mike Strong. Strong pitched one ⅓ innings. Jacob Barnes pitched one inning for the Shuckers, allowing no hits from the BayBears in the top of the eighth.

 

The Shuckers went scoreless for five innings and gave up three unanswered runs in the process. The BayBears scored their final run of the game when Guerrero brought in the game-tying RBI at the top of the ninth.

 

Base thieves

 

The Shuckers struggled at stealing bases Tuesday as Nick Shaw was thrown out trying to steal second during the bottom fourth and, in the next inning, Orf was also thrown out trying to steal second.

 

Arcia was able to get to third from second due to a bad throw by the BayBears in the bottom of the fifth but was left stranded on base. Weisenburger successfully stole second base in the bottom of the seventh.

 

The homecoming

 

Biloxi native and former New York Mets catcher Barry Lyons threw out the first pitch of the game. Lyons, who was the backup catcher for Baseball Hall of Famer Gary Carter, received an enthusiastic round of applause from the crowd for his role in helping to bring baseball back to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

 

The win

 

Wily Peralta, the Milwaukee Brewers pitcher who is in Biloxi on a rehab assignment, started the game for the Shuckers. He pitched five complete innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk. He also struck out five in his second appearance for the Shuckers.

 

After getting saddled with a blown save, Jacob Barnes ended up getting the win for Biloxi. The right-hander allowed one run on two hits and one walk in two innings. He also struck out two.

 

Another day, another town

 

The Shuckers move to 54-38 overall and remain in fourth place in the Southern League South at 11-13 in the second half of the season. The Shuckers travel to Pensacola Wednesday for a five-game series with the Blue Wahoos.

 

The Shuckers had another solid turnout with 3,190 fans in attendance Tuesday.

Sky Sox looking for stronger showing in second half

Sky Sox manager Rick Sweet expects better things from his Triple-A baseball club as the second half of the season unfolds.

 

He's already seeing it.

 

"There's no doubt that in the last month we have played better baseball and we are starting to see that show in wins and losses," Sweet said. "Overall we have sent guys up (to parent club Milwaukee) and they have done well there. Some are still there and others have returned. We have done well in developing players."

 

The Sky Sox entered Tuesday's home game against Nashville at 38-55 with a 12-15 mark since June 20. Colorado Springs started that season 6-14 in April.

 

As a result, a move toward a .500 season is not out of the question with 50 games remaining after Tuesday's contest. The Sky Sox are 4-1 since the All-Star Break including a road sweep of New Orleans.

 

The key behind the improved play lies with starting pitching. Of late, the Colorado Springs starters are lasting longer and keeping the bullpen from being overworked. That has been complemented by the hitting provided by the likes of Matt Clark, Jason Rogers and Logan Schafer.

 

Rogers opened his stint with the Sky Sox with hits in his first 15 games and that hot streak has set up RBI chances for a power hitter like Clark (46 RBI).

 

"Jason Rogers has been excellent," Sweet said. "Having him has helped Matt Clark and the rest of the lineup. Logan Schafer has really, really been playing well.

 

"(Logan) is as good a defensive outfielder as anyone at the Major League level right now, but he wasn't hitting well enough to be an everyday player. He is getting that opportunity (to play every day) and he has really improved."

 

Sweet expects to see the Sky Sox continue to improve in wins and losses as a team and prepare for when an individual opportunity arises with Milwaukee. There have been 15 promotions to the Brewers so far this season including right-handers Tyler Cravy and Corey Knebel who have made the trip to Wisconsin twice.

 

Developing players remains the priority over wins.

 

"That's what we're about, getting them ready when needed," he said. "We weren't quite prepared for the altitude here earlier this season. We have never entirely adjust to it (due to frequent road trips). The organization understands this so we will be better prepared next year."

Sky Sox fall short in rally against Nashville

The Sky Sox fell just short of a ninth-inning comeback in a 7-6 home loss to Nashville Tuesday night.

 

Juan Centeno hit a two-out RBI triple to make it 7-5 for Colorado Springs (38-56) before a crowd of 8,112. An RBI single for pinch hitter Nevin Ashley kept the rally alive, but a fielder's choice ground out by Yadiel Rivera ended the game.

 

Former Sky Sox outfielder Jason Pridie picked up where he left off on Monday. The veteran hit a two-run homer to put Nashville ahead for good with his third homer in two games at Security Service Field.

 

Pridie is having a career year at age 31 with 64 RBI and 15 homers in 92 games, his most since 86 RBI and 17 homers in 2004 in Single-A.

 

After the Sky Sox cut the lead to 5-4, reliever Ariel Pena gave up a double, triple and wild pitch as Nashville went ahead 7-4 in the sixth.

RHP Tyler Thornburg allowed five runs (eight hits and three walks) in just five innings. RH reliever Austin Ross tossed two scoreless to keep things close at the end, however.

 

Catcher Juan Centeno was 3-for-5 and could actually be considered "hot", as his linked player page will tell you.
