Despite five consecutive wins, how different is the Colorado Springs roster (currently full at 13 pitchers, 12 position players) going to look later this month, or even this week?

RH reliever Corey Knebel is a likely candidate to be sent to AAA upon the Matt Garza activation; another player leaves the big league roster when Wily Peralta returns early next week; Pete Orr just wrapped up his Pan Am-excused absence; Gord Ash was interviewed on WSSP's Sunday Brewers' pre-game and said Jim Henderson should be back soon; RHP John Ely looked good in his most recent Maryvale rehab stint; apparently newly-signed LHP Jeremy Horst is on his way; OF Bryan Petersen is currently in taxi squad inactive land, and we don't know if C Robinzon Diaz' injury status is short- or long-term.

That's eight possible "too many bodies", and while only Knebel is of real future concern, it could make for a very active roster shuffle the next couple of weeks, and all that says nothing about possible trade acquisitions as well.

Here is an excellent Toronto Star write-up on the bizarre finish to Pete Orr's journey around the bases as Canada took the Pan Am Games championship on its home soil Sunday.

Read that, and then watch how it all played out -- never question how much national pride plays in these clubhouses, always a joy to see...congratulations to the Brewers' AAA utilityman Pete Orr and his teammates.

As Brewers Player Development notes in this tweet --

Burgos went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA with six shutout innings against New Orleans. Cooper hit .478 and slugged .826 in 23 at-bats.

Here's the formal press release from the Sky Sox on Burgos.

The Manatees Examiner included quotes in their game story on Brevard County's 3-0 Sunday loss --

Brevard County Bottom of the 2nd

Garrett Cooper doubles (26) on a fly ball to center fielder Michael O'Neill.

Taylor Brennan reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Tyler Wade to third baseman Miguel Andujar. Garrett Cooper out at 3rd.

Michael Ratterree reaches on a force attempt, throwing error by third baseman Miguel Andujar. Taylor Brennan to 3rd.

Rafael Neda strikes out swinging and Taylor Brennan caught stealing home, catcher Kyle Higashioka to second baseman Angelo Gumbs to catcher Kyle Higashioka.

***

The best chance Brevard County had against Campos came in the bottom of the second. Garrett Cooper led off with his 26th double of the season. Taylor Brennan hit a ball to Tyler Wade at short. Wade, seeing that Brennan had a chance to beat the throw to first, bluffed the throw and Cooper took off for third. Wade turned and made a good throw to third and Cooper was out.

“Cooper should’ve advanced to third and he waited, thinking he was gonna throw to first,” said Ayrault. “Tyler Wade is a very heady player, realized he was gonna be safe at first and came back and got him at third. It was just the initial read. It is somewhat of a tough ball, but if he had broke off the bat, we would’ve had runners at first and third.”

The baserunning gaffe was the only negative for Cooper, who led the Manatees offense with a 3-for-4 night.

The Manatees are playing with 24 men on roster (13 pitchers), as no replacement for Cameron Garfield (released) has been named.

But in effect, they're playing with 23 and 12 pitchers, because RHP Brandon Woodruff last pitched way back on June 24th, but has been carried on the active roster for nearly a month now.

Rattlers edge Kane County 3-2

Angel Ventura pitched six scoreless innings at Kane County on Monday night and earned his fourth win of the season. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GENEVA, IL - Angel Ventura pitched six scoreless innings and got just enough offense as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Kane County Cougars 3-2 Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Carlos Leal gave the Timber Rattlers (31-63 overall, 8-16 second half) a 1-0 lead. The Wisconsin designated hitter, who had three hits in the game, cracked a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth inning. The homer, his second of the season, put the Rattlers in front for the first time in the three-game series at Kane County.

Ventura kept the Cougars (57-36, 21-4) in check through six innings. Ventura allowed four hits and pitched around four hits and a hit batsman with two strikeouts while keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard to put himself in line for his fourth win of the season.

Wisconsin added to their lead in the eighth inning against Cougars reliever Myles Smith. Smith issued three walks in the inning, including one to Alan Sharkey with the bases loaded to score Blake Allemand.

In the top of the ninth with two outs and none on base, Brandon Diaz, who had two hits in the game, was hit by a pitch from Smith. Diaz would steal second on the next pitch, but had to leave in favor of pinch-runner Mitch Meyer. Then, Allemand lined an 0-2 pitch in to right to drive in Meyer for a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Kodi Medeiros had pitched the seventh and eighth innings without incident, but gave up a leadoff double to Henry Castillo and hit Joe Munoz to start the ninth. Medeiros would retire pinch-hitter Michael Perez and Victor Reyes on flyouts. But, Chuck Taylor and Ildemaro Vargas delivered consecutive RBI singles to cut the Wisconsin lead to 3-2. Additionally, the single by Vargas sent Taylor to third with the tying run and Vargas took second on an error on the play to put the winning run in scoring position.

Medeiros ended the game by getting Cody Regis to ground out to third.

Wisconsin had ten hits in the game as they went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Their only hit with a runner in scoring position on Monday was Allemand's two-out single in the ninth to plate the immensely important insurance run.

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip with a three-game series at Cedar Rapids. Game one of the series is Tuesday night at Perfect Game Field. David Carver will make his Midwest League debut for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids sends Felix Jorge (4-3, 2.06) to the mound. Game time is 6:35ppm.

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Well never a dull moment for this team. Angel Ventura put zeroes up even though he wasn't throwing strikes, his control comes and goes. Kodi Medeiros was up to 94 but once again was leaving balls up and it cost him in the 9th. To get the last batter he went breaking ball on the outside corner, breaking ball on the inside corner, and then got the grounder to end the game. For whatever reason he seems to locate the breaking ball better than his FB or slider.

Brandon Diaz (2-3,BB), Blake Allemand (2-5), Elvis Rubio (2-5), and Carlos Leal (3-4, HR) had nice games at the plate. Diaz stole his 23 base in 32 tries, that's a 72% success rate at this point and has been on some kind of tear at the plate since June. Leal has also been hot of late, hitting well over .300 in his last 10 games.

Diaz left the game after his HBP and then SB in the 9th, Chris said it was a hard tag at 2nd on the same hip in which Diaz was hit with the pitch. There was some yip yapping between Vargas and the Rattler dugout afterwards.

Shuckers drop third straight in shutout loss to BayBears

Jorge Lopez allowed three runs over six innings and notched another hit on Monday (M.K. Krebs)

BILOXI, MS - The Shuckers dropped their third consecutive game on Monday after being shutout by the Mobile BayBears in the series opener of the two-game game set, 4-0, in front of 2,808 fans at MGM Park. The contest marked the ninth time the Shuckers have been shutout in 2015, and first time at MGM Park.

Biloxi (10-13) had to play from behind after two runs came across in the second inning for the BayBears. Rudy Flores hit a solo home run into right-center field, and Ronnie Freeman walked and came around to score on a Kevin Medrano single that gave Mobile (14-9) a 2-0 lead.

The BayBears struck an inning later on Gabriel Guerrero's sixth home run of the season off the netting in left field to put the Shuckers in a three-run deficit.

Biloxi starter Jorge Lopez (8-4) settled down after allowing the three runs, earning his ninth quality start of the season and seventh in his last eight outings. The 22-year-old struck out six and walked just one in his six innings of work, retiring 10 of the final 12 batters he faced after the Guerrero home run.

Jed Bradley worked two innings out of the bullpen for the Shuckers, surrendering a run on four hits and two strikeouts. Martin Viramontes continued his hot start to the second half, picking up a strikeout in an inning. The 26-year-old out of USC has posted an ERA of 2.38 in seven games in the second half after posting an 8.24 ERA in 16 games in the first half.

Tyrone Taylor (1x3) extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games with a single in the first, but Orlando Arcia's six-game streak came to an end after an 0-for-4 night.

The Shuckers will conclude the six-game homestand and try to avoid the sweep in the short two-game series with the BayBears on Tuesday night. Brewers' RHP Wily Peralta (0-0, 0.00), rehabbing his strained left oblique will make his second start for Biloxi, while Mobile will send out RHP John Omahen (3-0, 3.75). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network.

Sounds Blast Sox In 10-5 Loss

Three Nashville Homers Help Snap Sky Sox 5-Game Win Streak

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Following a four-game road series sweep of the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Sky Sox fell in disappointing fashion on Monday night as they dropped their series opener with the Nashville Sounds in a 10-5 loss before 2,047 fans at Security Service Field.

Drew Gagnon (1-10, 6.96) struggled early, allowing three runs over his first two frames before settling down with back-to-back scoreless innings in the third and fourth.

Trailing by three heading into the home third, Colorado Springs would push two runs across against Sounds starter Brad Mills (4-9, 4.09) as Kyle Wren scored on a Logan Schafer bunt single and throwing error by catcher Bryan Anderson before Matt Clark plated Schafer from third with an RBI sacrifice fly. The two-run frame pulled the Sox within one before Nevin Ashley drilled a solo blast, his sixth, over the left-centerfield wall to knot the ballgame at three after four innings of play.

Mills would work into and out of jams all night long but kept the Sox off the board the rest of his time on the mound, ultimately allowing just the three runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out one over seven solid innings.

Nashville's lineup would chase Gagnon in the fifth as the team collected three consecutive singles before former Sox outfielder Jason Pridie took the right-hander deep over the centerfield wall for a three-run blast. The homer, Pridie's second of the night after launching a solo shot in the first; put Nashville up 6-3 with one out in the fifth. Rob Wooten took over and set down his first two batters to work out of further trouble.

Nashville added four more runs in the sixth, taking advantage of what quickly turned into a tough night for Wooten. The Sounds offense collected five hits against the righty reliever with Nate Freiman's first home run of the season, a two-run shot, serving as the frame's big blow. Gentry and Wendle each added RBI doubles to chase Wooten without recording an out. Manager Rick Sweet called upon Wirfin Obispo to end the scoring threat and he wouldn't regret it. Obispo set the next three batters down in order before tossing two more scoreless innings of strong relief. The well-traveled right-hander struck out three while allowing just two base runners in those three frames.

The Sox would not score again until their final trip to the plate in the ninth as Brock Huntzinger followed Mills' outing with a scoreless eighth inning despite walking his first two batters in Jason Rogers and Clark. With runners now on first and second with no outs, Matt Dominguez followed with a roping line drive to centerfield. The ball looked ticketed for the left-centerfield gap as Craig Gentry hustled in from deep center. The speedy outfielder laid out and made the catch, causing confusion on the base paths as Rogers and Clark seemed to believe that the ball was trapped. Gentry quickly tossed the ball into second before second baseman Joey Wendle flipped the ball to first for the incredibly rare 8-4-3, inning-ending triple play. The triple-killing was the first hit into by a Sky Sox player since Bubba Carpenter did so over 14 years ago on July 8th, 2001.

Side-sling Tim Dillard provided Colorado Springs with a strong ninth, giving up just one hit while striking out three in the scoreless effort, to send the Sox into what wound up being their final at-bat.

Leading 10-3, the Sounds turned to right-hander R.J. Alvarez to close out the game in the ninth. Alvarez would not get away cleanly, serving up three hits and a walk en route to allowing two late runs. Schafer's RBI sac fly and a Luis Sardinas RBI single pulled the Sox within five before Rogers struck out to end the threat and ballgame. The Sky Sox fall to 38-55 with the loss as Nashville improves to 44-52.

The Sky Sox and Sounds are back at it on Tuesday night for the second game of a four-game set. Tyler Thornburg (2-5, 5.10) is set to face off with Nashville right-hander Nate Long (1-2, 4.70) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM MDT (8:05 Central) at Security Service Field.

Colorado Springs Box Score

RHP Drew Gagnon, sacrificial lamb; RHP Rob Wooten wakes up Tuesday to "celebrate" his 30th birthday, but we discussed the Sky Sox upcoming roster crunch earlier Monday, and this effort isn't timed well.

DH Matt Clark and C Nevin Ashley each had perfect games at the plate, four plate appearances each. Ashley's playing time (more than 40-man youngster Juan Centeno) is actually encouraging, I think the Brewers think they have something in the not-ancient 30-year-old, who has been money all season.

Golden memory for Sky Sox infielder Pete Orr after thrilling Pan Ams victory

By Joe Paisley, Colorado Springs Gazette

What a 24 hours it was for Sky Sox infielder Pete Orr.

The Toronto-area native experienced one of the biggest moments of his baseball career when he scored the winning run in Canada's 7-6 extra-inning victory over the U.S. in the Pan American Games gold-medal game on Sunday night.

By Monday afternoon, the 15-year pro was already in the Colorado Springs clubhouse, and still fielding interview requests from his homeland. Orr, 36, has enjoyed some personal highlights, including his first Major League Baseball game and hit with the Braves in 2005.

"Those moments are so different it's hard to compare them," Orr said. "They're both very special."

Sky Sox manager Rick Sweet is happy for Orr.

"He did a great job," Sweet said before Monday's home game versus Nashville. "He was showing off the medal to his teammates. I am happy for him."

Now, how that memorable moment occurred.

Under international rules, the visiting Americans started the 10th with runners at second and first, which was enough for the U.S. to take a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the inning in suburban Toronto.

The hosts started with runners at second and first when Orr connected on an RBI single to cut the United States' lead to 6-5.

U.S. reliever David Huff tried to pick off Orr at first base and the throw sailed into right field, allowing the other base runner to score and tie it at 6. The throw to put out Orr as he slid into third base went wide and the Newmarket, Ontario, native was a 90-foot sprint from gold.

He scored. The game was won. The celebration ensued.

"I didn't know if it got away far enough for him to score, and he ran anyway," Canadian starting pitcher and former Rockies standout Jeff Francis said in a postgame news conference. "The ball obviously beat him (to the plate). I don't remember much after that."

"I am really not sure what happened," Orr said. "It's all a blur."

It was the second straight Pan Ams that Canada defeated the U.S. in the gold-medal game. The Canadians prevailed 2-1 in 2011.

And now it's back to work for Orr, who is expected to be taken off the temporary inactive list as early as Tuesday. Sweet is pleased to have his clubhouse leader in a Sky Sox uniform.

"We missed him," Sweet said. "He is a good player on the field and veteran presence in the clubhouse. (Infielder Donnie) Murphy stepped into that role for me while he was gone but it is good to have him back."

BayBears start off two-game series with win over Shuckers

More game summary, but includes --

“We struggled from the get-go,’ ’ Shuckers manager Carlos Subero said. “The kid (Weller) came in with a high ERA (10.61). He was able to command that curveball early and finish our hitters off with curveballs. He had a running fast ball going on.

“It hasn’t been a good homestand. We’ve been in a little slump but every team goes through that. Hopefully we start playing up to our potential.’’

Owlz Score 10 Early, Cruise to Win

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (14-16) dropped their second straight to the Orem Owlz (20-12), falling 10-3 on Monday at Kindrick Field.

All of the runs would be scored in the fourth or earlier, with the Owlz plating seven in the fourth.

Trailing 3-0 going to the second, the Brewers would tie it up. George Iskenderian singled and Charles Galiano doubled before both were brought in by Carlos Belonis. Belonis hit an insider-the-parker to score all three runs.

Iskenderian led the way offensively for Helena, going 3-for-4 with the run scored.

Drake Owenby (1-1) was rattled for the first time in his pro career, giving up 10 runs on 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Tanner Lubach would start the Owlz' fourth inning with a single, picking up two hits in the frame. Lubach was 3-for-5 on the night with three RBI and a solo home run. Taylor Ward would add an RBI double as part of a two-hit night for the first-rounder.

J.B. Kole would pitch the final five innings for the Brewers, throwing shutout baseball and striking out two to shut down the Orem offense.

The Brewers and Owlz will face off for the final time this season on Tuesday Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).
