Kane County stops Rattlers 1-0

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars scored an unearned run in the sixth inning of Sunday's game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. That was enough for the Cougars to pick up a 1-0 victory over the Rattlers at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The win was Kane County's seventh straight.

 

Wisconsin starting pitcher Jon Perrin kept the Cougars off the scoreboard through the first five innings. The right-hander allowed three hits and struck out four.

 

But, the Rattlers offense couldn't solve Cougars starting pitcher Markus Solbach, who tossed seven shutout innings, allowed four hits, and struck out three without a walk.

 

Kane County (57-35 overall, 21-3 second half) broke the scoreless game with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Reliever Tyler Linehan got the first out of the inning, but Ildemaro Vargas reached on an error and Cody Regis drew a walk to put two runners on for Marty Herum. Herum lined pitch deep to center and the ball dropped in for a double to score Vargas for a 1-0 lead.

 

Herum, a native of River Falls, Wisconsin who played college baseball at Wisconsin-Whitewater, went 2-for-3 with a walk on Sunday. He is 26-for-63 (.413) with nineteen RBI in sixteen games against the Rattlers this season.

 

That run was all the Cougars needed to win for the eleventh time of their last twelve games.

 

The Timber Rattlers (30-63, 7-16) had four hits in the game and just one of the final ten batters in the game reached base. Cody Geyer took over for Solbach and retired Wisconsin in order in the eighth and Zac Curtis worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 21st save of the season. Curtis is 6-for-6 in save opportunities against Wisconsin this season.

 

Sunday was only the fifth time this season the Timber Rattlers have been shutout, but the loss dropped their record in games decided by one run to 6-21.

 

Game three of the series is Monday night. Angel Ventura (3-4, 3.70) gets the starting assignment for the Timber Rattlers. Josh Taylor (1-0, 2.61) is scheduled to start for the Cougars. Game time is 6:30pm.

 

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may watch the game on that platform with the Kane County announcing crew.

First a correction about Marty Herum, it turns out he's a WI boy, he's from River Falls even though his home town is listed as St Paul which I relayed in a post about him last week. Chris mentioned it on the air today and I reached out for some Whitewater folks I know to confirm, my bad there. (*also in the game story now that it's up, yes usually I write my comments before the story pops).

 

I laughed earlier this month when I read Taylor Jungmann's quotes bemoaning the organization's focus on walks because winning and losing often comes down to a series of events that are usually impacted by unnecessary extra bases, especially in the minor leagues, like today's game. Matos has an error, Tyler Linehan walks the next batter and then gives up a double so the Rattlers lose. That run doesn't score with out the error, the walk, or the double and that's pretty much the story of the 2015 Rattlers, they rarely pick each other up and get paper cut to death. Actually that's how I rate minor league relievers as well, if they allow a bunch of inherited runners to score I'm not going to think much of them because they don't have the stuff to stop the bleeding on their own.

 

Jon Perrin has been pretty darn good 2 outings in a row, his strike percentage wasn't as good as last time (19 of 23) but I'll take 42 of 60 every time out, he also picked off his 2nd batter in his limited time with Rattlers.

 

Sthervin Matos (2-4) committed what turned out to be the costly error previously discussed but also produced half of the offense. Natanael Mejia contributed a nifty pick off at 1B,

It's imperative the Brewers hit big on the occasional unheralded Latin signing (see Orlando Arcia, $90,000). Let's hope that Luna can be the pitching version of Arcia.

The Dominican Summer League All-Star game ended in a 2-2 tie on Sunday as the AL rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning.

 

Shortstop Ignacio Otaño started for the National League as the designated hitter and grounded into a fielder's choice in his lone at bat before being replaced by eventual MVP Yeiler Peguero of the Chicago Cubs.

 

First baseman Nicol Valderrey entered the game in the top of the fourth and struck out in his only at bat.

 

Pitcher Carlos Luna worked the eighth inning, pitching to four batters. He allowed one hit, but struck out the other three and was selected as the game's Most Valuable Pitcher.

Clark's Blast Propels Sky Sox To Series Sweep

Road sweep is the first for the Sky Sox since 2009

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox completed a four-game series sweep of the New Orleans Zephyrs Sunday afternoon, winning 3-1 in front of 2,987 fans at Zephyr Field.

 

All three Sky Sox runs came in the fourth inning on a three run home run by Matt Clark, his team-leading 13th long ball of the season. The home run was the lone blemish against Zephyrs' starter Kendry Flores (2-2, 2.66) who scattered four hits over 5.2 IP.

 

Sky Sox starter Nick Additon (5-3, 5.62) picked up the win allowing just one unearned run on an error by third baseman Matt Dominguez in the fourth inning. Relievers Ariel Pena and David Goforth combined to hold the Zephyrs to just one hit over the final 4.0 innings while Goforth picked up his third save of the season.

 

The four-game road sweep was the first for the Sky Sox since August 18-21, 2009 at Oklahoma City and the first sweep of the Zephyrs in New Orleans since July 15-18, 2004.

 

First baseman Jason Rogers finished 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, ending his hitting streak at 15 games. However, the Sky Sox outhit the Zephyrs 7-5 while Logan Schafer, Juan Centeno and Kyle Wren each finished with two hits apiece.

 

With the win, the Sky Sox improved to 38-54 while the Zephyrs fell to 42-52. The Sky Sox return to Security Service Field on Monday to begin a four-game series against the Nashville Sounds. RHP Drew Gagnon (1-9, 6.67) takes the hill for the Sky Sox against LHP Brad Mills (3-9, 4.20). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM MDT (8:05 Central).

Canada takes home Pan Am men’s baseball gold

AJAX, Ont. — A botched pick off and two American errors in the bottom of the 10th led to two runs as Canada’s men’s baseball team edged the United States 7-6 on Sunday to defend its Pan American baseball title.

 

U.S. pitcher David Huff tried to pick off Pete Orr at first base, but his throw went into right field to score Skyler Stromsmoe. The right-fielder’s throw to third then went wide, allowing Orr to score the winning run as the Canadians beat the Americans for Pan Am gold for the second straight Games.

The international tie-breaker was put in place in extra innings, meaning each team begins the frame with runners on first and second.

 

The U.S. had taken a 6-4 lead in the top of the 10th with Tyler Pastornicky’s two-run single off Chris Leroux.

 

Orr cut the deficit to 6-5 when his single off Huff scored Tyson Gillies.

 

Rene Tosoni hit a three-run shot for Canada and Jordan Lennerton had a sacrifice fly for his team-leading ninth run batted in of the tournament.

Brewers Collapse in 9th

The Helena Brewers (14-15) issued five late runs to give the Orem Owlz (19-12) a 7-4 win at Kindrick Field in Helena Sunday, ending their run of three straight wins against the Owlz.

 

Nate Griep made his first professional start for Helena, tossing two innings of shutout baseball. Griep allowed two hits and struck out one.

 

The Owlz took the first lead of the game in the fourth when Michael Pierson scored on the RBI single of Jeffrey Boehm. Boehm went 2-for-3 with the RBI, two walks, and a stolen base.

 

Helena responded immediately, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. George Iskenderian and Dustin Houle contributed RBI singles to the inning off Joe Gatto. Gatto did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. He would pitch 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out two. He would not receive a decision.

 

Carlos Belonis added a late home run for the Brewers, giving them a 4-2 lead headed to the ninth.

 

Junior Rincon (2-2) came in for the save, but was unable to deliver. He would face eight batters, giving up five runs before his time was done. The Owlz cranked three doubles in the inning to give them a 7-4 lead headed to the bottom of nine.

 

Helena was able to get the bases loaded in the ninth, bringing the winning run to the plate, but was unable to convert. Monte Harrison would pop out to shallow left to end the game.

 

The Brewers and Owlz will face off in the third game of their four-game series Monday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Campos, Yankees Blank Manatees in Series Opener

Viera, Fla. - Vicente Campos, Chaz Hebert and Alex Smith combined on a seven-hit shutout as the Tampa Yankees (12-11, 46-47 overall) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (10-12, 39-53 overall) 2-0 on Sunday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Campos (1-3, 8.04 ERA) tossed five shutout innings to earn the victory. He allowed just three hits and one walk. Campos struck out six. Hebert tossed three frames. He surrendered four hits and struck out two.

 

Alex Smith retired the side in order, including two strike outs, in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season.

 

Tampa plated the only two runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning against Jorge Ortega. Mike Ford led things off with a single to right field. Two batters later, Miguel Andujar doubled into the right field corner and advanced Ford to third. With Jake Skole batting, Rafael Neda couldn't handle an Ortega pitch. Ford scored on the passed ball and Andujar advanced to third. Skole then singled back through the box and gave the Yankees a two-run advantage.

 

Ortega (8-6, 2.21 ERA) was hit with the loss. He gave up two runs on eight hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four.

Trevor Seidenberger threw three shutout relief innings. He allowed just two hits and two walks. He fanned one.

Brevard County and Tampa will continue the series tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. RHP Cy Sneed (1-1, 3.00 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Manatees. RHP Gabe Encinas (2-3, 3.23 ERA) will get the start for the Yankees.
