I was trying to tell myself if the Manatees' could only get hot, because Clearwater is leading the second half after also winning the first, but overall record determines the playoff spot if the Threshers do hang on for a dual win.

Maryvale's first-half elimination number is down to three.

Helena's only two out with an elimination number of 10, so go H-Crew!

Thank you, Biloxi, for that first half...

Cougars rally late to beat Rattlers

Herum continues to torment Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Devin Williams allowed one run and struck out seven over six innings in a no decision at Kane County on Saturday night. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to tie their game with the Kane County Cougars on Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. However, a familiar thorn in the side of the Rattlers drove in the go-ahead run and scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to send Kane County to a 3-1 win.

Kane County (56-35 overall, 20-3 second half) scored a two-out run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead. Marty Herum singled with one out and took second on a wild pitch. Rattlers starting pitcher Devin Williams got ahead of Michael Perez with two strikes, but Perez blooped a 2-2 pitch from Williams into right-center just out of the reach of the Wisconsin defense to score Herum from second base.

The Rattlers (7-15, 30-62) had a rally snuffed out in the top of the fifth. Elvis Rubio was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third on a single to right by Tucker Neuhaus. Brandon Diaz dropped a bunt back to the mound and Rubio tried to score. He was out easily. Kane County starter Ethan Elias escaped the jam by getting a grounder to first to end the inning.

The Cougars went to the bullpen and brought Wei-Chieh Huang in for Elias to start the sixth inning. Carlos Leal drew a walk with one out and Alan Sharkey put runners on the corners with a two out single, but Huang got out of the inning with a strikeout, his third 'K' of the frame.

Williams left after six innings for the Rattlers. He allowed one run on five hits, walked two, and struck out seven, but was in line for the loss.

Diaz tried to start a two-out rally against Huang in the top of the seventh with a double, but he was left stranded.

The Rattlers broke through in the eighth inning against Jency Solis. Carlos Leal doubled to left-center with one out and took third when Solis committed a balk. Sthervin Matos trickled a single past the mound and into centerfield through the drawn-in infield to send Leal home with the tying run. The run took Williams off the hook.

Eric Hanhold, the sixth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers took over for Williams in the bottom of the seventh inning and worked a scoreless frame. But, he ran into trouble in the bottom of the eighth.

Ildemaro Vargas reached on an infield single to start the frame and was sacrificed to second. Herum got a single through the left side of the infield and Vargas just beat the throw home from Wisconsin left fielder Mitch Meyer.

Herum is 24-for-60 with eighteen RBI in fifteen games against Wisconsin this season.

Kane County added a run when Michael Perez singled off the glove of Neuhaus and Herum raced home before the ball could be tracked down behind the second base bag.

Luis Ramirez pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save for Kane County.

Game two of the three-game series is Sunday afternoon. Jon Perrin (0-1, 12.91) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Markus Solbach (8-2, 2.46) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 1:00pm.

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:40pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may watch the game on that platform with the Kane County announcing crew.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Devin Williams was fantastic after a couple of so-so outings which was good to see. The walks are a tad high but he's taken the jump most of us were hoping for as he's not as hittable as he was in the past. Knock the walks down and he's pretty safe bet to be a #3, if he can continue to improve his change and tighten up his curve he might be a #2. It's just really hard to project guys with 2 pitches when they are this far away.

Brandon Diaz (2-5,2B) has raised his AVE all the way up to .240 which is a tremendous accomplishment. Check out his splits to see just how far he's come. Carlos Leal just keeps on keeping on, hopefully he can be our position player version of Mike Fiers. Tucker Neuhaus (2-4) also had a nice game, he had a really slow start to 2nd half so he's still just hitting .194 for the half, but is hitting .265 over his last ten. Matt Erickson is never shy about dropping hitters in the order and Tucker was batting out of the 9 spot in this contest.

Manatees Win on Walk-off Hit By Pitch

Improbable Comeback Capped by Ratterree Hit By Pitch

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

07/18/2015 10:25 PM ET

Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (10-12, 39-52) overcame a five-run deficit and walked off in a 7-6 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle (13-10, 51-42) on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Trailing by one with two outs in the ninth, Chris McFarland grounded a single to left against Dallas Gallant. Zach Jones (0-1, 9.00 ERA) came in to face Clint Coulter with two outs. Coulter singled up the middle and moved McFarland to second. After falling behind 0-2, Garrett Cooper worked a walk to load the bases. Jones then hit Taylor Brennan with a pitch to force home the tying run. On a 2-2 pitch, Jones hit Michael Ratterree to win the game for Brevard County.

The Miracle scored early and often against Brevard County starter Javi Salas. Zach Granite walked to lead off the ballgame. Engelb Vielma then reached on an infield single. Mitch Garver stepped up and grounded a ball back to the mound. Salas fielded it, but his throw was off target and all runners were safe. With the bases loaded, Brett Doe lined a single up the middle and plated Granite to open the scoring. Ryan Walker then singled through the right side to plate a pair of runs. Doe advanced to third on the Walker single. Jason Kanzler lifted a sacrifice fly to center field and made it 4-0, Fort Myers.

Fort Myers added another run in the second on a Granite RBI single.

In the bottom of the second, Brevard County was able to get on the board. Cooper lined a base hit to right field. Brennan then drilled a double to right-center field and scored Cooper. Fort Myers starter Kohl Stewart was able to get out of the jam without any further damage.

The Miracle made it 5-1 in the top of the fourth on another Granite run-scoring single. The Manatees were able to get the run right back in the bottom half of the frame. With one out, Brennan grounded a ball that went under the glove of the short stop Vielma. After Brennan reached on the error, Ratterree and Paul Eshleman walked to load the bases. Steven Halcomb then dribbled a grounder up the third base line. Stewart came off the hill, but was unable to make a barehanded play. Brennan scored on the infield single and cut the deficit to four.

Salas was lifted after four innings. He surrendered six runs - five earned - on six hits and two walks.

Brevard County was able to plate another run in the fifth. Omar Garcia reached on an infield single to third. Two batters later, Coulter pulled a ball through the left side of the infield. With Cooper at the plate, Garcia stole third. Cooper then hit a deep drive into right-center field. Kanzler was able to run the ball down from center, but it was plenty deep to score Garcia. Cooper's sacrifice fly made it 6-3, Miracle.

The Manatees trimmed the deficit to a single run in the eighth. With one out and Corey Williams on the hill, Brennan drilled his second double of the game to right field. Ratterree singled into left-center field and plated Brennan. Ratterree advanced to second on the throw home. Williams was lifted in favor of Dallas Gallant. Gallant uncorked two consecutive wild pitches and allowed Ratterree to score.

Mark Williams was brilliant in relief of Salas to keep Brevard County in the ballgame. He tossed four scoreless innings and stuck out seven men.

Kaleb Earls (1-1, 3.34 ERA) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win.

Ratterree's hit by pitch marked the fifth walk-off win of the year for Brevard County. The Manatees will continue the home stand as they welcome Tampa Yankees to town tomorrow. RHP Jorge Ortega (8-5, 2.16 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Manatees. RHP Vicente Campos (0-3, 11.81 ERA) will get the start for Tampa.

Brevard County Box Score

The Manatees will take what they can get at this point. You have to credit Chris McFarland and Clint Coulter for helping to put pressure on the defense in the 9th. Javi Salas has been slightly off with his control lately. The game began very badly with a walk and a dribbler followed by Salas' own error on a combacker that could have been a double play. Instead of a man on 3rd and 2 outs they had the bases loaded and nobody out. Mark Williams was the key to this game with a line of: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K.

Kaleb Earls recorded 2 strikeouts in the 9th and worked a scoreless inning to earn the win. Clint Coulter had 2 singles, Taylor Brennan 2 doubles. Omar Garcia stole his 32nd base.

BILOXI, MS - The Shuckers dropped just their second series since losing back-to-back series against the Mississippi Braves and Jackson Generals from May 6-15 after a 5-3 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday, in front of 4,595 at MGM Park. Biloxi stranded 10 on base and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Shuckers (10-12) have dropped two of their last three series' are 13-6 in series play this season.

Through the first four games of the series, the Shuckers are 4-for-35 with runners in scoring position. In the loss, starter Tyler Wagner (6-5, 2.53) issued his 11th quality start in 16 tries, but suffered the loss.

Chattanooga opened up the scoring for the second straight game, using a RBI double by Max Kepler to score Niko Goodrum from first to put Biloxi in an early, 1-0 hole.

The Shuckers plated two runs in the third to take a brief lead. Nathan Orf (3x4, R) was hit by a pitch with one out and Tyrone Taylor (1x3, R, BB) followed with a walk. After a strikeout by Orlando Arcia (1x5, RBI, 2B), Michael Reed (1x5, 2 RBI, 2B) stroked a double to left to bring both runners around to score and give Biloxi a 2-1 advantage.

Reed's double was his 17th of the season and extended his hitting streak to five games. Arcia and Taylor stretched their hitting streaks to six games and Orf registered his fifth three-hit performance.

The Lookouts would get both runs back in the next half inning. A leadoff walk by Wagner to Kepler was followed by an error by Orf at second on a flip to Arcia on a force attempt that got away, putting two on with nobody out. Adam Brett Walker tied the game at three with a RBI single to left. Travis Harrison flew out to deep right to advance Kennys Vargas to third, and Stuart Turner would bring the runner home with a sacrifice fly to Taylor in center for the one-run edge.

Chattanooga added insurance runs on two solo homers from switch-hitter Kennys Vargas, a line drive onto the berm in right field in the sixth from the right side and a shot over the left field wall in the ninth, from the left side to put the Shuckers at a three-run disadvantage.

Wagner allowed four runs - two earned - on four hits, two walks and a season-high nine strikeouts, falling one shy of his career-best back in 2013 while with Wisconsin.

Biloxi pieced together a rally attempt for a second-consecutive night in the ninth, but fell short, scoring just one run on a fielders choice off the bat of Arcia to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Shuckers look to salvage two games in the series on Sunday with RHP Jorge Lopez (8-3, 2.58) facing off against LHP David Hurlbut (5-4, 4.78). Since June 2, Lopez is 5-1 with a 1.34 ERA (7 ER/47 IP) in seven starts, posting 43 strikeouts. .First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 4:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Vargas blasts the Lookouts past Biloxi, 5-3

Jeff Clark, Special to the Biloxi Sun-Herald

BILOXI – Chattanooga Lookouts first baseman Kennys Vargas brought his stick to MGM Park on Saturday night and helped the Lookouts to a 5-3 victory over the Biloxi Shuckers. Saturday’s win clinched the five-game series for the Lookouts as the Shuckers have dropped two in a row.

Vargas, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound powerhouse switch hitter, went 2-for-4 at the plate, with both hits leaving the park as solo home runs.

“I’ve been in a slump during this series,” Vargas said. “This really helps to boost my confidence. I try to play my best every game and this makes me feel better about the series.”

“This was a big win for us,” Vargas said. “As a team, we’ve made a lot of mistakes. But it’s good for us to win a series like this late in the season. We want to get better every game.”

The Lookouts struck first with an RBI from designated hitter Max Kepler in the first inning.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Shuckers scored two runs off of a double by right fielder Michael Reed that brought home second baseman Nathan Orf and center fielder Tyrone Taylor.

The home team's lead didn't last as errors played a part in the Shuckers' demise. In the bottom of the fourth inning with a one-run lead, the Shuckers gave up two unearned runs off of an infield error.

The night wasn’t without some fireworks: Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Shuckers shortstop Orlando Arcia brought catcher Adam Weisenburger home on a single. With two outs and the bases loaded, Reed popped up to end the game.

With the win: Jason Wheeler, who pitched 6 2/3 innings would get the win for the Lookouts. Wheeler gave up seven hits and two runs to end the game with an ERA of 3.09.

The Shuckers used four pitchers in Saturday's loss but starter Tyler Wagner pitched for six full innings. Wagner finished with four hits and four runs with an ERA of 2.53.

The loss brings the Shuckers to 53-36 on the season but drops their second-half record to 10-12. The Lookouts, the first-half champions in the North Division, improved to 50-39 overall and 7-14 in the second half.

Next up: The Shuckers will close the series with the Lookouts today at 5:10 p.m. at MGM Park before starting a home series with the Mobile Baybears next week.

Shuckers working their way through a rare rough patch

Patrick Magee, Biloxi Sun-Herald

Baseball is always full of ups and downs and the Biloxi Shuckers have swung between both extremes in recent weeks.

After playing a clean brand of baseball on their way to a first-half championship in the Southern League South Division, the Shuckers have come down to earth somewhat in the second half.

Entering Saturday's contest, the Shuckers were 10-11 and two games out of first place in the Southern League South Division.

That's far from reason to panic with 48 games remaining on the schedule, but the last three weeks or so have proven to be somewhat of a bumpy stretch for a talented team accustomed to winning series after series. Prior to last week's five-game stand at Montgomery, the Shuckers had won an astounding nine straight series.

There have been some far from perfect performances on the mound, at the plate and in the field the last three weeks.

The Shuckers' worst performance of the season came back on July 7 when their pitchers allowed a season-high 12 walks and the defense committed its most errors, four, in a 10-7 loss at Montgomery.

That poor outing stands out as the worst case scenario, but you have seen some chinks in the armor of late for the Southern League's newest member.

There is certainly nothing to be ashamed of with a 10-11 record headed into Saturday's game, but manager Carlos Subero admitted that the team hasn't quite played up to the high standard it set early in the season.

Entering Saturday's contest, the Shuckers had committed at least one error in six consecutive games.

"We're not playing the type of defense we were playing early on," Subero said Wednesday following a two a two-error performance in a 6-5 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts in 11 innings.

Also in that game, Biloxi batters stranded 17 and lost despite out-hitting the Lookouts, 15-8.

It was a hitting performance that Subero described as "non-productive."

The very next night, the Shuckers won 3-0. They totaled just four hits in the game, but still managed to strand 15 runners.

At this point in the season, even the wins don't look all that pretty for the Shuckers. Maybe that's just more proof that this is a team of destiny that can work through struggles and still hover around around .500.

Shortstop Orlando Arcia and starting pitcher Jorge Lopez have proven to be the most reliable Shuckers in recent weeks as the two roommates may very well be the best prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers' system at this moment.

Arcia, the No. 8 prospect in the minor leagues according to Baseball America, is batting .314 with five homers and 49 RBIs as the Shuckers' three-hole hitter.

Lopez is looking more and more like the ace of the Biloxi staff with an 8-3 record and 2.58 ERA in 16 starts.

Aside from the loss of left fielder Kyle Wren to promotion, all the key pieces are still in place for the Shuckers to make a run in the second half.

No matter what happens the rest of the way, Biloxi is postseason-bound thanks to an outstanding first half.
