Brewer Minor League Free Agents After the 2015 Season

Barring a late re-sign with the Crew, here's the list of minor leaguers who will be free agents as of Friday (along with the lone big leaguer, Kyle Lohse):

Potential (and likely) free agents:

RHP Manny Barreda

RHP Hiram Burgos

RHP Jaye Chapman

C/3B/LF Robinzon Diaz

RHP Tim Dillard

OF Josh Fellhauer

IF Taylor Green

OF Ben Guez

RHP Preston Guilmet

RHP Jim Henderson

LHP Jeremy Horst

LHP Jarret Martin

C Sandy Martinez

OF Matt Long

IF Pete Orr

RHP Josh Roenicke

UT Hainley Statia

RHP Rob Wooten

Only one of those guys has been immortalized with a Brewer bobble head: Henderson.

Losing any of these guys isn't a big deal, but based on numbers and history, I look at Jaye Chapman and see a potential bullpen arm.

Certainly the first three on that list have some value. Chapman pitched great last year after his hip surgery, which was holding him back in the past. Could be a good, cheap bullpen arm. Barreda has a great arm and could also be a cheap quality bullpen arm. Burgos pitched very well last year, even in Colorado Springs, also coming back from injury. Starting pitching always has value. Martin has some upside too as he was hurt last year. Guez is the other one I wanted back.

Sure they aren't 23-year-old top 100 prospects, but every year there are some guys who finally figure it out at age 27/28 and go on to have decent careers. Having league-minimum quality bullpen arms is always a good thing, and KC has shown the last two years that a good, deep bullpen can make up for an average starting rotation.

I know a lot of the more interesting names are pitchers, but as a matter of simply filling rosters, it seems hitters would be a bigger issue for the Brewers.

I'm sure they'll sign a couple of pitchers (and the AA grouping isn't quite as good) but right now, depending on how the MLB roster shakes out, you might be looking at a AAA pitching staff of Lopez, Wagner, Houser, Hader, Cravy, Suter, Magnifico, Barrios, Goforth, Strong, Thornburg, Barnes and Ross with Johnson, Gagnon, Bradley and Hall as potential backup options. On the other hand there might be open roster spots on the top two levels for one more outfielder, two more infielders and, if they stash third catchers again, three or four catchers. They've got a couple extra AAA outfielders, but that is about it as far as benches go above A ball.

If they have one of those veteran hitters they like as a clubhouse guy, that isn't the worst thing. If someone like Orr fills the role well and is willing to come back, why not, especially when most of the middle infield playing time at AAA will be going to Arcia and Rivera.

Sure looks like RHP Jaye Chapman will be back, and with a big league camp invite.

Agent Josh Kusnick --

Will have free agent update today. Contract signed. 6 year guy w invite to early camp. One down

I bet if you check who liked this tweet it would be funny. (Chapman did...)

Although Josh tosses in a "maybe" in this Twitter conversation,

Nothing as promised, perhaps waiting for a Brewers announcement...

I thought I remember reading about some implications regarding Wang's control because he was taken off the 40 man this year. Is he a free agent or was it just that he can be taken in the rule 5?

Available in Rule 5 unless re-added to the 40-man roster...

disapointed to see Schafer and hellweg go. for a couple years after that 2011 season, I thought that Schafer would put together a Brett Gardneresq career. and always felt that Hellweg had the potential to be the best part of the Greinke trade. man, when the season ended after the trade- really thought we had ripped LA off w/ how promising Segura, Hellweg & Pena looked. makes me wonder about the Hou deal- that as good as that trade seems now- anything can happen in a few years.

It took him a LONG time to do anything at A-ball. A+ didn't destroy his confidence. The real hitters are showing they can OPS over 800 in Brevard. Power is down, but it should make you a better hitter. Better in Brevard than Colorado Springs.
