Brewer Minor League Free Agents After the 2015 Season

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Following is a list of players who are free to leave the organization five days after the World Series when minor league free agency begins. These players and the Brewers could agree to sign an additional one-year minor league deal to extend the relationship. Or the Brewers could add the player to the 40-man roster, thus extending the "ownership" of the player.

A player who has exhausted all seven years of his original minor league affiliation to the organization that signed him is eligible. Here are the Brewers farmhands who have been with the organization for their full seven-year affiliated commitment (or even longer in the case of Tim Dillard, Taylor Green and Rob Wooten). We've been following these five guys their whole affiliated pro careers.

RHP Hiram Burgos

RHP Tim Dillard

C Cameron Garfield - RELEASED 7/18

IF Taylor Green

RHP Rob Wooten

Other potential (and likely) free agents:

LHP Nick Additon - RELEASED 8/2

C Nevin Ashley - ADDED TO THE 40-MAN ROSTER 9/8

RHP Manny Barreda

RHP Yhonathan Barrios - ADDED TO 40-MAN ROSTER 9/22

RHP Jaye Chapman

C/3B/LF Robinzon Diaz

RHP Derek Eitel - RELEASED 8/2

RHP John Ely- RELEASED 7/21

OF Josh Fellhauer

IF Hector Gomez - ELECTED FREE AGENCY 8/8

OF Ben Guez

RHP Jim Henderson

LHP Jeremy Horst

LHP Michael Kirkman - RELEASED 8/1

C Tyler LaTorre - RETIRED 8/1

LHP Brent Leach - RELEASED 8/24

LHP Jarret Martin

C Sandy Martinez

OF Matt Long

IF Donnie Murphy - RELEASED 8/2

RHP Wirfin Obispo - RELEASED 7/25

IF Pete Orr

RHP Ariel Pena - ADDED TO 40-MAN ROSTER 9/4

OF Bryan Petersen - RELEASED 8/1

RHP Josh Roenicke

OF Hainley Statia

*Dominican Summer League catcher Sandy Martinez, who debuted in 2010 at age 17 in the Angels' system, normally would not qualify for free agency this fall, but he signed a unique one-year contract with Milwaukee this spring.

Thanks to the Brewers for verifying the accuracy of this list for us.

By some time tonight/tomorrow, we'll post the list of players who are eligible to be added to the 40-man roster (to protect them from Rule 5 theft by another organization).

Kind of feel bad for Ben Guez as I think he finally would have made it to the majors after the Brewers made some trades this summer if he had not gotten injured. Might be beneficial for him to stay in the organization as I think he could fight for a job in 2016 depending on who is traded and left to play centerfield. If room becomes available after trades would also like to see what Pena and Chapman can do in the majors before they become free agents.

Have to think Jaye Chapman will get called up if the Brewers trade relievers. Maybe Pena, too.

Definately Chapman. Two years removed from dual hip surgery, and pitching great.

I've liked Pena's arm, and thought the bullpen move was great, but he's still wildly inconsistent. I'd like to give him one more chance, but the world won't end of he's lost.

I don't see any names on that list that are must keeps or that couldn't be replaced, though I'm sure a few they'll want to bring back especially the guys they've invested some time in, like Burgos, Pena and a few of the catchers who'd get spring training invites. Chapman and Kirkman too.

Dillard must return. Not for his pitching necessarily but because:

1) He is funny

2) Now its a tradition!

Can't he be hired as a player/pitching coach or something for Biloxi (No one wants to go to CO Springs) for life. I would be ok with that. We could link his blog and maybe he can do Link Reports as a side gig. He can throw the first inning of any game he feels like playing in.

Ditch Rock. Replace him with Dillard.

Added newcomer RH reliever Yhonathan Barrios to the list above. Unless re-signed to a 2016 minor league deal or added to the 40-man roster, which would protect from Rule 5, Barrios will be a just-turned 24-year-old minor league free agent this fall.

Whatever happened to Hainley Statia?

Posted on April 11th --

Baseball America reports that veteran minor league infielder Hainley Statia, whose roster status had not been reported previously, is on the 7-day DL. It is likely as a roster stash, but we can't say that with certainty. Statia did see spring training game action.

Back on December 4th, we posted this detailed summary on his career at the time of his re-signing.

***

We did inquire with the Brewers weeks ago, it was one of the few inquiries we've made that just kind of fell flat...

His MiLB player page does say "Free Agent", and actually still shows as as the old Huntsville Stars, but that was even the case back then. We pretty much based his status on the Matt Eddy Baseball America transaction list.

From the post just above --

These players will be free agents a few days after the World Series, but players who were outrighted during the 2015 season will be free agents at the end of the regular season.

This would include RHP's Rob Wooten, Jim Henderson, Preston Guilmet and Brandon Kintzler.

As per the Pacific Coast League transactions page, Brandon Kintzler elected free agency on the very first day he was eligible.

That doesn't mean the others won't as well, although perhaps they are hopeful of a new minor league deal with the Crew being worked out.

You'll also notice at that link that any 40-man roster member not already in the big leagues (such as Juan Centeno, Matt Clark, Mike Strong -- also Johnny Hellweg and Daniel Fields) have been recalled to Milwaukee in a paper move, as all 40-man roster members are considered big leaguers on paper now, until possible options next spring, for those with options remaining.

My apologies, folks -- have since learned only outrighted players with three years of service time have the right to elect this early (by a few weeks) form of free agency, which explains Kintzler's status as well as the others listed.
