LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - When Fred Dabney signed on as a pitching coach with the Texas Rangers' organization in 1999, his long-range goal was to work his way to the major league level. One talk with Farm Director Reid Nichols changed his mind. Dabney pitched in the minor leagues for nine seasons and in Taiwan for one more.

 

When Dabney moved into the coaching field, Nichols had one question.

 

"He asked me: 'what's your goal'?" Dabney told The Lawton Constitution.

Manatees commit four errors in loss to Charlotte

The Brevard County Manatees struggled in the field for the second consecutive day, helping the Charlotte Stone Crabs pick up an 8-3 win in game three of the series at Charlotte Sports Park. Four of the eight Charlotte runs were unearned.

 

Brevard County (6-11, 35-51) committed three errors in the early going Sunday and ended the day with four. This after two errors on Saturday and three on Friday. Sunday’s issues led to an early exit for normally reliable starter Javi Salas. Salas allowed six runs in 3.2 innings Sunday, three runs were unearned. After Salas struck out the side in the first, the Stone Crabs offense got going, with three straight two-run innings.

 

Mike Marjama singled to start the second and moved to second one out later, when Jace Conrad walked. Pat Blair’s single loaded the bases for catcher Armando Araiza, who lined a two-run single to left, giving the home team an early 2-0 lead.

 

Kean Wong started the Charlotte third with a walk. Willy Adames followed with a swinging bunt that Salas fielded in front of the plate, he threw wide of first, allowing Wong to score, giving the Stone Crabs a 3-0 lead. Marjama hit a fielders’ choice that turned into a double play after he tried to get to second, while Adames was in a rundown. It looked as if the Manatees may get out of the inning, but Salas hit Granden Goetzman with a pitch and Goetzman proceeded to steal second. Brevard catcher Paul Eshleman threw down, but high and the ball ended up getting away, allowing Goetzman to move to third.

 

Conrad was then hit by a pitch and stole second. Blair came up with another hit, scoring Goetzman to make it 4-0. Conrad tried to score as well, but he was gunned down at the plate on a great throw by Clint Coulter in right, ending the inning.

 

Brevard County broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, against Stone Crabs starter Brent Honeywell. Christopher McFarland led off with a single and Coulter followed with a ground-rule double, putting runners at second and third. Garrett Cooper’s sacrifice fly scored McFarland, making it 4-1. Taylor Brennan’s groundout scored Coulter, cutting the deficit to two.

 

The Stone Crabs (7-11, 52-36) answered with two more tallies in the fourth. Both runs scored after a leadoff single was erased on a double play. Braxton Lee hit a grounder to Angel Ortega at short that should’ve ended the inning. Instead, Ortega’s throw was wild and Lee reached. A double by Wong put runners at second and third and Marjama brought them home with a two-run single, giving Charlotte a commanding 6-2 lead.

 

That ended the night for Salas, who gave up eight hits, walked three and struck out four in his 3.2 innings of work. Preston Gainey was called on to pick up for Salas and he did an admirable job.

 

The Manatees cut the lead in half, with a run in the top of the seventh. Michael Ratterree stroked a one out double to left and after a walk to Eshleman, Honeywell’s day was done. He was replaced by Josh Kimborowicz, who immediately gave up an RBI single to Steven Halcomb, making it 6-3.

 

The run was charged to Honeywell, but he pitched his longest game of the season, in his fourth start. He went 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out six. His day included a stretch where he retired eight in a row.

 

The final two runs came in the Charlotte half of the seventh inning. Marjama drew a one out walk and went to third on a Goetzman double. After the second out was made, Gainey threw a wild pitch with Blair at the plate. The ball got away, allowing Marjama to score. Goetzman was right behind him and Eshleman flipped the ball to Gainey, but it sailed on him, giving the Manatees their fourth error of the game and giving the Stone Crabs their eighth run. Gainey was lifted after issuing a walk to Blair. Mark Williams finished the game, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two hits.

 

Brevard County had 10 hits, getting Multi-hit games from Omar Garcia (2-for-5), Coulter (2-for-4 w/a double) and Ratterree (2-for-4).

 

Charlotte had 12 hits on the day, including two hits each from Wong, Adames, Marjama, Blair and Armando Araiza. Marjama and Araiza also knocked in two runs each.

 

The Manatees will look to avoid the sweep Monday, when they send their ace, Jorge Ortega (7-5, 2.25 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by Buddy Borden (8-3, 2.48 ERA). Note the early start time of 10:00 a.m.
