Link Report for Friday 7/10 - Will the state of Colorado ever dry out?

Whenever I see George Iskandarian's name I always think of Sanitarium by Metallica.

BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored seven runs in the eighth inning to bust open a close game against the Beloit Snappers Friday night at Pohlman Field. The late outburst gave the Rattlers a 9-1 victory over their in-state rivals and allowed them to snap a three-game losing streak.

Beloit starting pitcher Daniel Gossett didn't allow a hit through the first five innings. He retired the first thirteen batters he faced before Elvis Rubio reached on a throwing error after a routine grounder to short.

Wisconsin starter David Burkhalter also kept putting zeroes on the scoreboard as he allowed three hits and struck out six over his first five innings.

The Rattlers (29-57 overall, 6-10 second half) broke through in the top of the sixth. Mitch Meyer singled into right to start the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gregory Munoz. Brandon Diaz followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Blake Allemand was next and his grounder to second turned into a force at second on Diaz, but Allemand beat the throw to first. By beating out the potential inning-ending double play, Allemand allowed Meyer to score the go-ahead run.

The Snappers (32-54, 6-10) answered in the bottom of the sixth. Yairo Munoz hit a solo homer to left with one out to tie the game. Luke Curtis relieved Burkhalter after the homer, retired the next two batters on two pitches and kept the game tied.

Wisconsin came right back in the top of the seventh against Gossett. Carlos Leal doubled and went to third on a single by Rubio. Then, Alan Sharkey lined out to left deep enough for Leal to score the go-ahead run.

Cody Ponce, the second round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 draft, took over on the hill in the bottom of the seventh and gave up a pair of singles, but ended the inning on a grounder to third that stranded runners at the corners.

In the eighth, the Wisconsin offense erupted for seven runs on six hits as they pulled away from the Snappers.

Meyer started the inning by drawing a walk from reliever Cody Stull. Munoz dropped a bunt up the third base line and beat the throw for a single. Diaz also bunted up the third base line for a hit. The throw to first was wild and that allowed Meyer to score for a 3-1 lead.

Stull hit Allemand to load the bases and gave up an RBI single to Dustin DeMuth before leaving the game with Wisconsin up 4-1. Stull faced five Rattlers in the eighth inning and didn't retire any of them.

Mike Fagan came in for Stull and Leal greeted him with an RBI single. A wild pitch would let another run home before Rubio walked to load the bases. Alan Sharkey made it 7-1 with an slow grounder to second that allowed a run to score.

Sthervin Matos and Munoz capped the scoring in the inning with RBI singles and Wisconsin was up 9-1.

Ponce retired the last six Beloit batters in order to close out the game and earn his first professional save.

Wisconsin's offense had ten hits and went 7-for-11 with runners in scoring positon on the evening.

Curtis is now 6-1 on the season.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday night at Pohlman Field. Milwaukee Brewers starter Wily Peralta is scheduled to make the start for the Timber Rattlers as part of his rehabilitation assignment. Beloit has named Junior Mendez (2-6, 4.76) as their starting pitcher. Game time is 7:00pm.

Off topic... I know next to nothing about photography but you look around at all the excellent photographs from our own Brad and of course Ann Mollica who's been doing such great work for the T-Rats and I wonder... how many pictures do they shoot per game and how many pics per excellent photo? These are the types of random thoughts that pop into my head when I admire but don't quite understand something.

Anyway the pitching was awesome... finally, I swear I say good things about these guys and then they bury me. David Burkhalter's curve is a slower version of the pitch Jungmann featured in college... it's in the upper 60s and breaks from head to feet. It's not a MLB pitch, but it's been effective and has potential if he can tighten it up and put some zip on it. Cody Ponce is still sporting a 0.00 ERA through 2 appearances and 7 innings.

Brandon Diaz (2-5), Carlos Leal (2-5,2B), and Gregory Munoz (2-3) had the multi-hit efforts for the T-Rats.

The AZ line-up only had 2 guys hitting below .280 tonight while Carlos Leal is the only T-Rat with a significant number of plate appearances over that mark.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - After a Thursday night washout, the Sky Sox dropped two shortened contests in disappointing fashion on Friday night as the OKC Dodgers ended the night with 6-3 and 11-6 victories before a packed house of 8,364 fans at Security Service Field.

Game one featured a pair of right-handers facing off in a seven-inning contest that featured little action early on. Sox starter Tyler Thornburg cruised through his first four frames, allowing just three base runners on two hits and a walk to keep Oklahoma City off the board. The Sky Sox would get to Dodgers starter Joe Wieland for a run in his final inning of work as the right-hander pitched just three innings in his return from the disabled list. The run came on a two-out Matt Dominguez RBI single that plated Elian Herrera to give the Sox a 1-0 lead after three.

Oklahoma City finally broke through against Thornburg in the fifth as Kyle Jensen took an 0-1 offering over the left-centerfield wall to knot the ballgame at one through five.

The two sides would enter and conclude the sixth in a tie game despite four runs coming around to cross the plate in the inning. Facing his biggest batter of the evening with one on and two out, Thornburg surrendered a two-run blast to OKC catcher Austin Barnes that allowed the Dodgers to surge ahead to a 3-1 lead. Colorado Springs answered with two of their own against relievers Steve Smith and Daniel Coulombe (1-0, 4.37) in the very next frame. Pinch-hitter Donnie Murphy came through with a big two-out, two-run double to score the speedy duo of Yadiel Rivera and Kyle Wren from first and second base respectively. The clutch knock evened the score at three heading into the game's final inning.

The decisive seventh saw Oklahoma City pile three runs on the Sox bullpen; though one arm had a particularly rough evening. Colorado Springs would deploy three relievers in the frame as Rob Wooten (2-1, 5.19) opened the inning by loading the bases without recording an out. Hoping to limit further trouble, manager Rick Sweet turned to Michael Kirkman to face the rehabbing veteran Carl Crawford. Kirkman would get the out, allowing Jensen to score from third on Crawford's RBI sacrifice fly. Kirkman then got Corey Seager to ground out before intentionally walking Chris Heisey to load the bases. The lefty-swinging Andy Wilking would not be daunted by the unfavorable matchup, singling home Wooten's remaining runners to cap the frame's scoring. David Goforth finished out the seventh, inducing a Barnes groundout to keep the score at 6-3. Wooten would be charged with all three runs in the frame in a tough night. Juan Gonzalez came on to close out game one, retiring the Sox side in order to secure the 6-3 Dodger win.

We broke down the Game One box and log earlier in this thread.

Game Two proved to be a forgettable one for the Sox as a close contest through four would get away from the home team thanks to a five-run Dodger fifth. Nick Additon (4-3, 6.08) gave Colorado Springs 4.1 innings of five-run ball, allowing eight hits and a walk along the way. The left-hander left a then 3-2 ballgame with two runners in scoring position and one out as Ariel Pena looked to keep the game close. Pena could not keep the OKC bats at bay, giving up a bases-loaded two-run single to O'Koyea Dickson to allow both inherited runners to score before serving up a three-run shot to Jensen. The Dodger outfielder's second home run of the evening gave the visiting squad an 8-2 lead after four and a half frames.

The Sox offense would not roll over however, adding a third run against Dodgers starter Deck McGuire (4-4, 4.26) in the home fifth courtesy of a two-out RBI triple off the bat of Logan Schafer. Donnie Murphy would cross the plate to cut the Sox deficit to 8-3. McGuire limited the damage, working out of the inning to end his evening having allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out three.

Now trailing by five after five, the Sox would send Pena out for his second inning of work. The righty would be tagged for two more homers as Elliott Johnson and Chris Heisey provided the Dodger clout, combing for three RBIs on the late long balls. Upon recording the final out of the Dodger sixth Pena sent the 11-3 ballgame into the home sixth where the Colorado Springs offense would tack on three more runs (one earned) against OKC reliever Matt West. Matt Dominguez's leadoff double was followed by a Matt Long walk before a fielding error by second baseman Darnell Sweeney allowed Nevin Ashley to reach safely and Dominguez to score the Sox fourth run. Pinch-hitter Bryan Petersen joined the RBI party with a run-scoring groundout before Kyle Wren ended the night's scoring with an RBI single to score Ashley. West retired Murphy and Herrera to end the sixth, holding an 11-6 Dodger advantage heading into the final frame.

Wirfin Obispo tossed a scoreless ninth before West did the same in the home half of the inning. Jason Rogers doubled with one out to give the Sox late hope but it was not meant to be as the Sox went down quietly in their final two outs, securing an 11-6 Oklahoma City win. The Dodgers improve to 55-31 with the double header sweep as Colorado Springs falls to twenty games below .500 at 33-53.

The Sky Sox and Dodgers are back at it on Saturday night in game-four of this extended five game set. Josh Roenicke (4-6, 5.71) will take the mound against a yet to be named Oklahoma City starter with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) at Security Service Field.

Colorado Springs Game Two Box Score

Sorry folks, but we are bound by law to cover all levels of the system by law. Did you read the caption on the photo above? That's minor league ball from a local family perspective, final scores be damned.

Not a great night from an inherited runners perspective on the AAA level. Every time we put a bit of hope in RHP Ariel Pena, reality sets in.

Jason Rogers and Matt Dominguez each doubled twice and Kyle Wren singled twice, so there's that.

Okla. City Top of the 6th

Defensive Substitution: Kyle Wren replaces left fielder Matt Clark, batting 4th, playing left field.

DISCLAIMER: That's from the Sky Sox' prior game, which was Wednesday the 8th.

It's brought up here, because Clark did not play in Friday's doubleheader, so he's apparently day-to-day for now.

Brewers and Rockies Split Twin Bill

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (8-11) split a doubleheader with the Grand Junction Rockies (11-10) on Friday at Suplizio Field in Colorado.

Helena would take game one by a score of 10-5 courtesy of a huge sixth inning.

Parker French was outstanding in the start for the Rockies. The righty pitched five shutout innings, giving up just three hits and striking out five. He would leave with a 2-0 lead and not receive a decision.

Grand Junction took the first lead with a run in the fourth. Michael Benjamin led off with a double and scored on the sacrifice fly of Chris Rabago. Benjamin would be the only Grand Junction player to start both games. He went 2-for-4 in the first game with a run scored and two strikeouts.

Christian Trent had another good outing for Helena, pitching four innings and giving up just one run. He allowed four hits and struck out three. He would leave with a 1-0 deficit, but not receive a decision.

The Brewers blew it wide open with nine runs in the top of the sixth. It would be the most runs Helena has scored in an inning this season. The frame would consist of seven hits including a double from Monte Harrison and a two-RBI single from George Iskenderian. Harrison had four hits over the two games, continuing his hot hitting as of late.

The win would hand Grand Junction their third straight loss.

We broke down the Game One box and log earlier in this thread.

The Rockies responded with an 8-4 win in game two.

Steven Karkenny and David Denson each hit solo homers for the Brewers early, but it would not be enough as Grand Junction posted two innings of at least three runs.

Chris Keck and Jensen Park each had three-run homers for the Rockies, who jumped a game over .500 with the win.

Jordan Yamamoto (0-3) was dealt the loss, giving up five runs in three innings on the hill. He would strike out six batters in the start.

The Brewers now head to Orem to face the Owlz in a three-game series. First pitch on Saturday from Brent Brown Ballpark is set for 7:15 PM (8:15 Central).

Helena Game Two Box Score

The rough Helena seasons for RHP's Jordan Yamamoto and Donnie Hissa continued, but the former is 19 years old and the latter is 23, read into that what you will regarding the future.

Shortstop Jake Gatewood, DH'ing here, is in one of those "uh-oh" stretches again, 1-for-his-last-17 with 11 K's. An unfortunate golden sombrero here...

Rough night in the field for catcher Charles Galiano with an error, a passed ball, and six stolen bases against (zero caught stealing).

Maryvale Box Score

OK, so perhaps the neighborhood is a bit rough at night, but if you were a Brewers minor league diehard (OK, geek), how great would it be to amble over to the ballpark, pay nothing, and sit with a cozy dozen fans and the occasional player family member and watch these kids?

Brewers outhit the Tribe-ette's 11-4, committed only one error, and moved their record to 8-9, with promise of more good things to come.

The four Brewer arms combined for 18 ground ball outs and only two fly outs (hat tip to longtime Maryvale pitching coach Steve Cline).

Maryvale Game Log

With all the love for the "Arizona 5" at the top of the order (spawning their own thread), it was the bottom half that shined here, as the catcher duo of Mitch Ghelfi and Beau Wallace (as the DH) combined for four hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.

As noted above by "And That", Demi Orimoloye (not quite as easy to remember the spelling as Iskenderian) had a huge night, 3-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases.
