Manatees go to rain delay after 5 trailing 2-0. After getting two men on in the 5th with 2 outs, Angel Ortega was picked off 2nd after almost getting picked off the previous play. May have been their last chance.

 

Wang pitching pretty well after giving up a double and triple to the first two hitters.

Would love to know the backstory on RHP Wuilder Rodriguez, who dazzled again tonight in the DSL.

 

The Venezuelan is making his pro debut this year at age 22. Where you been, man?

 

Reminder to self -- provide a breakdown of Brewer Latin prospects by country.

 

We may not have seen the fruitful MLB-level results quite yet, but the percentage of Milwaukee farmhands signed out of Venezuela who at least become interesting has been very high in recent years.

Seems like a lot off rain outs. Has it been that wet across the US? I know I have been soaked around me in Wisconsin. Though the Brewers haven't really had much rain problems(even games in MKE have been in dry weather).

The H-Crew trailed 2-0 after five innings in this game scheduled for seven.

 

LHP Christian Trent got the start, as the Brewers certainly have a rested staff after four days of travel and rain-induced idolness. Trent allowed only one run over four innings, and then RHP Junior Rincon allowed the second Grand Junction run in the 5th.

Iskenderian has been actually much easier to spell than I first anticipated :). It's just like it sounds!

Whenever I see George Iskandarian's name I always think of Sanitarium by Metallica.

Final, Game One: Oklahoma City 6, Colorado Springs 3

 

Once again, not sure if there will be two game summaries from the Sky Sox tonight, here's an initial analysis of Game One.

I lost track -- is the homerless drought at home by the Sky Sox still a thing (May 29th, right?).

 

Tied at 1 through five, the Dodgers scored two in the top of the 6th off RHP Tyler Thornburg.

 

A big two-out pinch-hit double by Donnie Murphy tied it right back up at 3-3 with one final inning scheduled.

 

(OK, well, it was big for Donnie, we realize Sky Sox recaps aren't currently the go-to section of your nightly report, even though Ed Pearsall does a fantastic job with his write-ups.)

But then RHP Rob Wooten didn't retire anyone and LHP Michael Kirkman didn't strand anyone, and the next thing you knew, the Sky Sox were 33-52.

DSL Brewers Box Score

 

The Brewers scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, then hung up three in the seventh as they topped the Mets 6-1. Wuilder Rodriguez went seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out five. He improved his record to 2-0 with a 1.16 ERA and opposing hitters are batting just .175 against him. 19-year-old Jesus Brea pitched the final two scoreless innings and has yet to give up an earned run in 11 appearances this season. Through 16 innings of work he's allowed only eight hits and one unearned run.

 

Yerison Pena had two hits including his third home run of the season. First baseman Nicol Valderrey went 3-for-5. Josue Herrera and Marcos Pinero each had a single and a double, Franly Mallen had two hits and Julio Mendez singled and drew a pair of walks. Mallen, playing shortstop, had the lone error in the game. It was his eleventh of the season, with eight of the eleven coming at short.

KODAK, TN - Victor Roache launched his third Double-A home run for the Shuckers, and second in extra innings, propelling Biloxi to a 6-4 victory in 11 innings over the Tennessee Smokies on Friday night at Smokies Stadium. The win was Biloxi's eighth-straight in extra-innings, improving the record to 8-3, the league's best record during free baseball. The Shuckers take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series and will go for the series win on Saturday night.

 

In the top of the 11th, Nick Ramirez (1x5, R, SB 4-game hit streak) blooped a single into right field to beat a shift and Roache's (1x4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) blast came two outs later, giving Biloxi a 6-4 eventual win. The Shuckers outfielder's last two home runs have come as game-winning, extra-inning blasts, with the first coming against the Montgomery Biscuits on June 20 at MGM Park.

 

Damien Magnifico (SV, 12) walked the first man he faced in the bottom of the 11th in Tyler Pearson, but got the third double play of the night from Bryant Flete and induced Jacob Hannemann into a groundout to secure his 12th save of the season and second in as many days.

 

Biloxi (8-7) jumped out in front with a three-run third. Roache started the frame with a walk and moved to third on a single by Adam Weisenburger (1x4, BB). Brooks Hall (6 IP, 4 R, 8 H, 2 BB, 4 SO) brought in Roache with a bunt that resulted in a fielder's choice with Weisenburger being erased at second base. Nick Shaw (1x5, RBI, R, 3B) ripped a triple into right to bring in Hall from first and give the Shuckers a two-run edge. Nathan Orf (2x5, RBI, R, 2B) followed with a double into left to give Biloxi its third run of the inning.

 

Tennessee (6-8) responded with two runs off to cut the Shuckers' lead down to one in the third. Billy McKinney's two-run double plated Elliot Soto and Bijan Rademacher for the Smokies' two runs in the frame. Tennessee would add two more runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Stephen Bruno, bringing in Soto and Wilson Contreras to give the Smokies a one-run advantage.

 

The Shuckers knotted the game at four off of former big leaguer Rafael Soriano with a run in the eighth. Orf started the frame with a single and moved over to third on Orlando Arcia's (2x5) single through the right side for his second hit of the game to make him the first player in the Southern League to reach 100 hits for the season. Michael Reed (0x5) bounced into a fielder's choice to bring in Orf from third to tie the game.

 

Manny Barreda walked one and struck out one in his two innings of relief for Biloxi.

 

Biloxi will look to get back on the winning side of a series on Saturday night, and take a 3-0 lead in the five-game set with Tennessee. RHP Tyler Wagner (6-3, 2.35) will take the start for the Shuckers, while the Smokies will send out major-league rehabber RHP Ryan Williams (3-0, 2.08) First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. How did Orimoloye last until the 4th round? Brewers would not have been crazy at all to draft him instead of Kirby in the comp round. Maybe he and the Brewers worked out a predraft deal? Anyway, another 15 base runners for the Baby Brewers tonight.

 

And another four hits for Monte Harrison today.

 

I get the feeling that if the Brewers actually manage to bring in a couple good prospects before the deadline, they could have a top 15 farm system in the near future. Maybe top 10 after next year's draft.

Stone Crabs rally in eighth, take series opener from ‘Tees

The Brevard County Manatees, fresh off a series win in Tampa on Thursday, traveled to Port Charlotte on Friday to start a four-game series with the Stone Crabs. In a see-saw game, Charlotte would snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, beating Brevard County, 6-4.

 

The Stone Crabs (5-11, 50-36) struck early, scoring twice in the bottom of the first against Manatees starter Wei-Chung Wang. Andrew Velazquez led off with a double and Kean Wong followed with a triple. Three pitches into the game and just like that, Charlotte was up 1-0.

 

Willy Adames was next up and he rolled one to third that eluded Manatees third baseman Steven Halcomb, rolling through his legs. The two-base error scored Wong and put Charlotte up 2-0.

 

Wang did settle down after the error and retired the next three batters in order, meaning only one run was earned in the inning. Stone Crabs starter German Marquez pitched well and made that lead stand up. He allowed a walk in the first inning to Taylor Brennan and another to Michael Ratterree in the second, before giving up his first hit to Omar Garcia, who singled in the third. Garcia stole second, his 31st steal of the season, but was stranded there after Chris McFarland struck out and Brennan grounded out.

 

Brevard County (6-9, 35-49) threatened again in the top of the fifth, with Angel Ortega and Garcia hitting back-to-back singles, with two out. While at second, Ortega tried to bait Marquez into a bad play, as he danced off the bag. Marquez threw back to second once and Ortega just got back. He did it again immediately and the second time was the charm, as Ortega didn’t beat the tag. He was called out by the base umpire Kirk Struble, ending the inning.

 

Wang recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth, but with a 1-1 count on McFarland in the top of the sixth, home plate umpire Ryan Benson called for the tarp. After a one hour, 18 minute delay, the game resumed. The delay caused both starters to end their night early. Marquez threw 73 pitches over five innings of work. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out four. He was replaced by Jeff Ames.

 

McFarland’s at bat ended in a groundout, but Brennan reached on an error and went to third on a double by Clint Coulter. After Cameron Garfield popped out, Michael Ratterree walked, loading the bases. That would be where the rally ended though, as Rafael Neda flied out.

 

Wang was replaced in the top of the seventh by Tristan Archer. Wang went five innings, throwing 59 pitches. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, struck out three and walked none. Archer kept the Stone Crabs off the board in the sixth and the Manatees offense got rolling in the top of the seventh.

 

Halcomb and Ortega drew back-to-back walks and moved up 90-feet on a ball back to the mound by Garcia. That brought McFarland up, who promptly dropped one into left-centerfield for a double, bringing both runners home and tying the game at two. That was the end of the night for Ames.

 

Brennan welcomed reliever Edwin Fierro with a double of his own, scoring McFarland and giving the Manatees a 3-2 lead. Clint Coulter singled, moving Brennan to third. Cameron Garfield reached on an error, scoring Brennan and putting the visitors up, 4-2.

 

All the work Brevard County did in the seventh to take the lead, was erased in the bottom of the eighth. After Archer issued a one out walk to Wong, Adames hit a slow roller to McFarland at second. He charged the ball, but it got by him. Coulter, who was backing up on the play, over ran the ball, allowing Wong to score and getting Adames to third. What should have been a double play, instead turned into a two-error, run scoring play and made it a one run game.

 

Trevor Seidenberger came out of the pen for the Manatees, but things went from bad to worse. After Granden Goetzman tied the score with a sacrifice fly, Seidenberger proceeded to walk the bases loaded. Jace Conrad made him pay, with an infield single, allowing two runs to score and giving the Stone Crabs a 6-4 lead.

 

Seidenberger’s night came to an end after the single. He was credited with 0.1 inning, allowing two runs on one hit and walking three. Mark Williams came in to stop the bleeding, getting Yoel Araujo on strikes.

 

The Manatees had one last chance in the ninth, but Isaac Gil retired the side in order, striking out two, including Coulter to end the game and earn the save. Coulter had two hits on the night for Brevard County, as did Garcia. Velazquez and Conrad led the six-hit attack for the Stone Crabs, with two each.

The series continues Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The Manatees will send Eric Marzec (1-7, 4.72) to the mound, against Charlotte hurler Steve Ascher (5-0, 1.83).

Trevor Seidenberger was fantastic in the first half but struggled after promotion to Biloxi and really had a bad night here. Wang was okay except for the start of the game. Critical extra base hit by Chris McFarland for the 2nd game in a row.
