McFarland's Grand Slam Leads Brevard County to 5-3 Victory

Sneed Wins First Game as a Manatee; 'Tees Take Series in Tampa

Tampa, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (6-8, 35-48) received an excellent pitching performance and one big swing of the bat in a 5-3 victory over the Tampa Yankees (7-7, 41-43) on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

 

With the Yankees leading 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, the Brevard County offense went to work against starter Cale Coshow (4-2, 2.49 ERA). With two outs, Michael Ratterree was hit by a pitch. Rafael Neda and Angel Ortega singled consecutively to load the bases. Omar Garcia then reached on an infield single that plated Ratterree and tied the game. Chris McFarland stepped up and launched an opposite field grand slam that gave the Manatees a 5-1 advantage. It was McFarland's second home run of the season and the first grand slam by a Brevard County player since Alfredo Rodriguez launched one on 8/18/14 vs. Tampa.

 

Cy Sneed (1-1, 4.09 ERA) allowed just two runs - one earned - over seven innings to earn the win. He surrendered eight hits and no walks. Sneed struck out three batters.

 

Kaleb Earls came on in relief for the final two innings. He allowed just one run, on a Jake Skole RBI double in the ninth inning. Earls recorded his third save of the season.

 

After taking two of three games in Tampa, the Manatees will start a four-game series in Port Charlotte tomorrow against the Stone Crabs. Wei-Chung Wang (6-2, 4.54 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County.

Final: DSL Mets2 11, DSL Brewers 9

 

The Brewers jumped out to an early lead thanks to a five run second inning, but the Mets answered right back with three runs in the top of the third. It was a back-and-forth contest from there, but a four run eighth from the Mets proved to be too much for the Brewers to overcome as they fell 11-9.

Nelson Hernandez turned in another short outing, going just three innings and giving up four runs, three earned. He hasn't lasted more than five innings in any of his six starts this season. Former Tampa right-hander Yomelbin Almonte followed Hernandez and pitched fairly well, giving up just one run over three innings. Starling Duval was charged with the loss after he allowed four runs in just two-thirds of an inning.

 

23-year-old Yerison Pena continued to thrive against the younger competition in the DSL, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run. He also drew a walk and knocked in four runs. Julio Mendez went 2-for-5 with a triple as the Brewers leadoff hitter. Ariel Estades and Franly Mallen each added two hits and a walk in five plate appearances with Estades adding his 15th stolen base of the season.

Rattlers fall hard in Kane County

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 13-2 Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Kane County collected nineteen hits in the game and erased an early two-run deficit to go on to their third straight win over the Rattlers.

 

Wisconsin (28-57 overall, 5-10 second half) grabbed the early lead with two runs in the top of the first against Cougars starting pitcher Chris Oliver. Brandon Diaz started the game with a walk and a single by Blake Allemand sent Diaz around to third base. Dustin DeMuth knocked in Diaz with a sacrifice fly. An errant pickoff throw by Oliver allowed Allemand to take third base. Carlos Leal drove in Allemand and the Rattlers were up 2-0.

 

Kane County (49-34, 13-2) responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the second. In the first, Marty Herum cracked a two-run double to tie the game. Henry Castillo hit a two-out, two-run homer and the Cougars were up 4-2. The hit was the first of four on the night for Castillo.

 

In the second, Rattlers starting pitcher Angel Ventura gave up a leadoff single to Victor Reyes, who stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Wisconsin brought the infield in and a grounder was hit to second baseman Gregory Munoz, but the throw home was just late and Reyes scored to make it 5-2. Later in the inning, Herum drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Castillo knocked in two more with a double to give him four RBI on the night and the Cougars were up 8-2.

 

The Rattlers tried to put a rally together in the fourth inning against Oliver. Natanael Mejia reached on an infield single. Gregory Munoz and Diaz followed with bunt singles to load the bases, but Oliver escaped without allowing a run. Oliver, who just arrived with Kane County from Lakewood in the South Atlantic League after a trade between the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondback, tossed six innings in his Cougars debut. He allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings, struck out five with one walk, and picked up the win.

 

Kane County poured on the offense with another run in the fifth off Ventura, three more in the seventh off Tyler Linehan, and one last run in the eighth off Scott Lieser. In the two game series at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, Kane County outscored the Rattlers 28-7 and outhit the Rattlers 36-18.

 

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip with game one of a four-game series against the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field on Friday night. David Burkhalter (2-5, 4.75) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit sends Daniel Gossett (3-8, 5.42) to the mound. Game time is 7:00pm.

Someone stop the bleeding! Kane County has destroyed the T-Rats so far this season. Angel Ventura got upset about the strike zone early and it all went south, both teams were unhappy with the plate umpire so at least he was consistently bad. Just keep pitching Angel... this stinker bumped his ERA a full run from 2.84 all the way to 3.84 and set the tone for another night to forget from the pitching staff as a whole.

 

So lets talk a little theory because Marty Harem, while unfortunately from St Paul and likely a Vikings' fan, played baseball at UW Whitewater and had a successful career there. The last time the Brewers dipped into the D3 ranks that I recall was for Austin Blaski, who just kind of faded away after an injury. The WIAC is one of the better D3 conferences in the nation, and I know it's not the same competition as D1 and all that, but there have been successful big league players to come from the conference.

 

Now this may sound like criticism, but it's not, it's more curiosity because Harem wasn't drafted by anyone, signed as a NDFA with AZ, and has gotten better every year. Now he's not going to set the world on fire from a SLG or OBP standpoint, but he's pretty decent at 1B and has room to fill out yet. The Brewers have taken some players with much higher ceilings: In 2012 they took Alan Sharkey and Adam Giacalone, neither one of those guys performed better at the plate than Herum, though Sharkey is an excellent defensive 1B. in 2013 it was Garrett Cooper and David Denson, both with much higher ceilings than Herum, but in 2014 they didn't take a single 1B, and this year came back with Tyrone Perry and Steven Karkenny. Just looking around at where the Brewers are it seems like they could have had room for a guy like Herum as Cooper is the only player who's outperformed Herum to this point but is repeating at BC.

 

So all this got me thinking, do the Brewers scout the best players in the WIAC or is it just UWM? Every year it seems like a player or 2 gets drafted or signed from the WIAC but not by the Brewers. Every once in a while there are pop-up players that are nationally recognized like Jordan Zimmermann, Bob Wickman, or Jarrod Washburn so every team is on them, and of course this a cold weather state, the quality of baseball is just D3, and every other negative someone can think of. However, I just find myself curious if the only show in town is spending time scouting the only college baseball conference in the state or is it not worth the time?

 

At any rate the Rattlers put 9 hits on the board which would normally be cause for celebration but ended up on the wrong side of another drubbing. The unfortunate Sthervin Matos was the only player not to record a hit and Natanael Mejia (2-4) recorded the only multi-hit game. Mejia isn't the best defender, tonight he forgot there was a runner on 2nd when there was a wild pitch, but he's got some talent with the stick.

 

Kane County continues to challenge Dustin DeMuth with bunts up the 3rd base line, he's made most but not all of the plays.

 

I for one will be glad when the season series with Kane County is over because they have a Munoz and Castillo as well, so if I get distracted I have no idea what's exactly happening when Chris is describing the action when I re-focus my attention back on the game. On the bright side at least Mehring was entertaining, he really does make my summers.

KODAK, TN - The Shuckers snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-5 victory over the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Stadium on Thursday night, starting the second-half of the 10-game road trip. Shortstop Orlando Arcia led a Shuckers offense that tallied 11 hits by finishing the evening 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and two stolen bases. Late addition to the lineup, Nick Shaw reached base safely five times in the win. The win places every team in the Southern League South in a tie for first place at 7-7 at the conclusion of Thursday's action and makes the Shuckers the eighth team in minor league baseball to reach the 50-win plateau.

 

Biloxi (7-7) started the scoring with a two-run second, using a RBI single from lead-off man Nick Shaw (2x3, RBI, 3 R, 3 BB) and a run-scoring double by Orlando Arcia (3x4, 3 RBI, R, 2 2B, 2 SB) to spot the Shuckers to a 2-0 lead.

 

Tennessee (6-7) put up a two-spot in the bottom-half of the third inning to knot the game with aN RBI single by Bijan Rademacher and a RBI groundout by Stephen Bruno.

 

The Shuckers created separation with a five-run fifth to pull ahead, 7-2. Shaw singled and moved over to second on a walk to Tyrone Taylor (1x4, R, 2 BB) to set up Arcia's second RBI of the game on a single. Michael Reed (2x5, RBI, R) followed with a single to push Taylor across and Nick Ramirez' (1x3, 2 RBI, 2 BB, R) two-run single plated Arcia and Reed to give Biloxi a four-run advantage. Victor Roache's (1x3, RBI, 3B, BB) triple, one out later, allowed Ramirez across for the fifth run of the inning. Ramirez has eight RBI's over his last five games and is second in the Southern League with 56 on the year.

 

Biloxi would tack on another run in the fifth for a six-run lead on a RBI double for Arcia to bring in Shaw and make it an 8-2 game. The 20-year-old shortstop collected his 12th three-hit performance and now leads the league with 24 doubles.

 

Shuckers' starter Hobbs Johnson (6-4) was effective in his outing, coming one out shy of picking up his second quality start of the season. In 5.2 innings of work, the southpaw from North Carolina allowed four runs on five hits, five walks and three strikeouts. The 23-year-old left after walking Tyler Pearson and giving way to Derek Eitel out of the bullpen.

 

The Smokies clawed their way back with two runs in the sixth and added on another in the eighth off of reliever Jed Bradley. Tennessee loaded the bases with one out, but Damien Magnifico (SV, 11) struck out Wilson Contreras and got Billy McKinney to ground out to second to keep the Shuckers' lead at three. The Shuckers' closer would shut down Tennessee in the ninth and use a game-ending double play to secure the win.

 

Biloxi will try to start a new winning streak on Friday night against the Smokies in game two of the five-game series. RHP Brooks Hall (7-5, 4.68) will toe the rubber for the Shuckers, while the Tennessee will send out RHP Ivan Pineyro (5-4, 3.72) First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Hobbs Johnson was up and down, struggling with his command. He walked five and gave up five hits in five and two-thirds innings. On a positive note, that's five straight scoreless outings for Damien Magnifico who has been nails at the back end of the bullpen. Orlando Arcia continues to excel, reaching base in four of his five trips to the plate. He walked, singled and had a pair of doubles and also stole his 11th and 12th bases of the season.
